already becoming scattered and a little bit more wide-spread from the peninsula off to the east bay. richmond and oakland, concord, and danville a few light showers there. fairfield reporting light rain. over the north bay santa rosa and napa reporting light rain. this will only intensify. when we expect it will be the heaviest and stick around and what you can expect for your weekend coming up. sal. right now in oakland police are at the scene of a power pole down. it's right now at 28th and market. around 3:30 this morning neighbors say -- also damaged the fences. the car drove off. didn't get far when police officers caught up with it two blocks away. this is a look at northbound 280 getting up to highway 17.

6:01 let's go back to ken and pam. >> thank you. firefighters are still monitoring hot spots at a fire in napa. the fire started at 9:40 last night. tara moriarty is live in napa with more on the damage done to the home. tara. >> reporter: well, the fire completely ravaged the home. it's difficult to see because it's dark out here and a very rural area. there are no lights. but this is a fire that actually isn't completely out. there are still hot spots that firefighters couldn't get to because of power lines were in the way. now let's take a look at some of the video that was shot last night around 10:00. just before 10:00 actually. officials say an elderly man was sleeping in his bedroom he woke up when he heard popping and crackling noises and sound of a smoke alarm. luckily he was able to get out of the house but his cat was not. they believe the fire ignited in the garage. in that area was gun powder and

ammunition that sparked education motions. it took 30 firefighters from napa and cal fire nearly two hours to contain the fire. the cause is still under investigation and at 6:30 this morning so in a little bit here crews expect the fire to be completely under control. in a few hours firefighters will be out here when the sun is up investigators will try to pinpoint a cause. live in napa i'm tara moriarty. we are just learning a 22- year-old marine in afghanistan was shot and killed by an afghan soldier last month. the marine was shot in the back of the head while standing guard at an afghan u.s. base. the initial report of his death said he died while conducting combat operations. this is at least the seventh killing of the american military member by afghan troops in the past six weeks. we are also learning that the u.s. soldier accused of killing 16 afghan village earns could be flown to a u.s. military prison as early as

today. the attorney representing the army sergeant said his client apparently saw a fellow soldiers leg blown off the day before the shooting rampage. >> it's a tragedy all the way around. there is no question about that. i think it's of interest that we have a soldier that has an exemplary record, decorated soldier who was injured in iraq to his brain and body. >> the attorney says the sergeant had been injured twice during three deployments to iraq and that he and his family were not happy that he was being sent to afghanistan. coming up at 6:15 why afghan president karzai is saying this morning that he's at the end of his rope with the u.s.. >> there is concern this morning that a gilroy mother is hurt or even dead. that is after police say her son an iraq war veteran shot and killed his 11-year-old sister and then took his own

life. christien kafton is in gilroy for the frantic search for that missing mother. >> reporter: that search is still under way. first you can see that the memorial here to 11-year-old lucy luna is still here. they had a candle light vigil last night. the candle still it will at this hour. >> we just lost our audio with christien kafton. we'll get back to him in a little bit. as police continue to search for the missing mother who's daughter was allegedly killed by her son who also killed himself. this morning a judge in oakland is expected to order the release of investigative report of november's pepper spray incident at uc davis. today's order is expected to end the long legal battle over whether to release the uc task forces report on the controversial incident. however a potential court appeal could delay the release to the public for a few more

weeks. video of campus police shooting pepper spray into the eyes of seated protestors ignited a rage. among them is is a cal professor. she is believed to be the woman shown in the youtube video being grabbed by the hair by police. she is being charged with resisting arrest. the recent rainy weather has washed out this weekends scheduled work on muni's n- judah line. the transit agency had planned to close down sessions of church and dubois streets for major rail reinstruction work. the rainy weather has put that on hold. it's now scheduled to take place the following weekend. speaking of the weather. sal, weather has certainly effected traffic all this week and could be now and later this afternoon. >> yeah. this afternoons commute you

should plan not to be driving after 4:00. and we'll bring in rosemary. rosemary is listening very attentively. i know she is. she will update you on tonight's forecast. first let's talk about we are state 880 north and southbound. getting top downtown oakland. also the morning commute looks good at the bay bridge. we haven't had a big delay. maybe on this friday we won't as sometimes people don't go in on friday early enough. sometimes we have lighter than usual commutes. peninsula 101 and 280 looking good as well. watch for airport delays especially if it begins raining. the planes do have a little trouble coming in to that particular airport. 6:07 here is rosemary. good morning, to you. bracing for another slick drive again on this friday morning. take a look at storm tracker two. the scattered showers over the course of the last hour or two have become a little bit more

wide-spread. we are seeing them from the coast into areas of fairfield and north bay. looks like the south bay mostly cloudy and staying mostly dry. at least for now. 55 degrees right now at san francisco. few light showers you can see popping up around the peninsula. perhaps across the bay bridge at that time. 54 degrees in areas around concord. the golden gate we saw a little slick earlier remains the case. 53 in napa. areas around sialon know. perhaps a little bit of a dry spell at the moment. we have more rain on the way. take a look as i back this up here. some of the heavier rains staying to the north of us. at least for now that is going to change anywhere from an inch to two inches with the next storm. down to the south bay quarter inch to a three quarters of an inch. let me give you the timeline. it's 4:00 or 5:00 before the heavier rain begins over the north bay. most of the bay area seeing

they say at this point they are still searching for one more victim. her mother. investigators say they have found forensic evidence that 52- year-old martha gutierrez is either critically injured or dead. no one has seen her since this incident unfolded. on wednesday police were called here after they found lucy luna, her brother abel both dead in a bathroom. investigators say it appears abel gutierrez first killed his sister and turned the gun on himself. he may have killed his mother martha gutierrez as well. after abel returned from iraq he was suicidal. >> he would say he wanted to kill himself. he would ask my dad if he killed himself if he thought my aunt would be hurting. my dad tole him yeah so don't do it. >> the priority now for investigators is locating martha gutierrez and trying to

determine if she is alive or dead. abel moved in with his mother after returning to iraq and police have been called to the home since his behavior had been so erratic last month. at that time he didn't seem to be dangerous. we will try to find neighbors here that can tell us more about the families situation. for now we are live here in gilroy christien kafton. face to face with a mountain lion. a monterey county woman describes her terrifying encounter. >> san francisco 49ers are getting ready for the big move to the south bay. the new agreement making sure the team can't move again any time soon. >> and a derogatory chant at a march madness game. what southern mississippi band members are accused of yelling at opposing playering.

free throws. rodriguez was born in puerto rico and that makes him a u.s. citizen. the president of southern miss is promising disciplinary action against the students involved. rodriguez and kansas state went on to beat southern miss 70-64. many people in petaluma are pitching in to help out the little league team that became the target of heartless crimes. last weekend someone broke into the teams equipment shed and made off with bats, balls, helmets, pitching machines, and chalk line makers. since then donations have been pouring in. including a $1,000 check from the petaluma police officers association. as a result, the little leaguers won't miss a single at bat. in the wake of sunday's massacre of afghan civilians, pressure is growing on president obama to accelerate the pace of u.s. troop withdrawals. as alison burns reports his plan is to gradually wind down the war and facing new set

backs. alison. >> reporter: pam, and today the afghan president lashed out at the u.s. saying he was at the end of his rope. he's complaining about what he calls a lack of cooperation with the u.s. in the investigation of sunday's shooting spree. he was meeting with the families of the 16 victims. now the comments today come a day after he told service secretary leon panetta afghan's don't trust u.s. troops. he wants them out of rural areas. he wants afghans to take control of their new security next year. >> i don't think that the u.s. is going to exceed to karzai's demand. >> reporter: in another set back for the u.s. the taliban has suspended preliminary peace talks. more on what the taliban is

demanding during my next update in about an hour. for now we are live in washington, d.c., alison burns. 6:16 north korea says it will launch a long-range rocket mounted with a satellite on it next month. such launches are part of a peaceful space program. this is video reloosed by north korea of a similar launch back in 2009. the u.s. and south korea view the launches as tests of north korea's military miscan technology. that is a violation of the united nations ban. monterey county woman that came face to face with a mountain lion says she shaken up. the mountain lion came out of nowhere and killed her dog. she was outside her home with her dog buster sunday night when the attack happened. the she said she tried to grab buster but the mountain lion swatted at her and ran away. the department of fish and game said it was spotted in the same area a month before. the plan for a new dog park

is no longer a pet project. the town council backed off its earlier plan to build a fenced in area for dogs. one neighbor had vowed to fight the plan in court, siting safety and environmental concerns. others are pleading with them to deal with other issues like the crumbling roads. it now appears the team will be calling that city home for the next four decades. the santa clara city council passed a nonrelocation agreement. that binds the 49ers to the city for 40 years. the agreement can only be broken under extreme circumstances. the council also voted on final approval of a bank loan of up to $950 million for the project. efforts under way to save a popular water slide in pleasanton. east bay park officials

it's not all that bad. here many bay point it looks good. we also checked the toll plaza. still not a big crowd. usually by now we do have one. 6:19 let's go to mark. i'm sorry let's go to rosemary. >> no problem. a live look outside our doors. the roads will be a little slick. not as bad as we have soon the last couple of days. in some cases we are dealing with the light rain. areas around the east bay, fairfield down into concord, inland east bay a few sprinkles along the coast. seeing light rain and drizzle this morning. and the satellite radar will show you that front still way back here is going to eventually move our way and bring us pretty good rain. moderate to heavy at times by the afternoon and evening hours. light rain expected throughout the morning hours by the afternoon 4:00 or 5:00 it's over the north bay. it looks like by 7:00 or 8:00

and into 9:00 or 10:00 it moves south. we could get anywhere from an inch to two inches of rain. if you're heading to the sierra there is a winter storm warning. wind gusts going to be picking up as well. blowing snow and scattered showers in the forecast. snow levels will really plumet down to 2,000 feet come sunday morning. temperatures sitting in the mid 50s around the region. low 50s santa rosa. we will be drying out over the course of the weekend we will remain unsettled with scatters showers a possibility. a little bit of sunshine. possibility of thunderstorms around with us. the low snow levels in our temps. afternoon highs will be mid to upper 50s. a cooler weekend in store from the afternoon highs we have seen lately. e-bay papal will be the first to process electronic payments in china. they have filed an application with the people's bank of

china. the long delayed construction of a second tower in san francisco is finally back on track. this after a group purchased the property next to an original high-rise. the second tower is expected to have 299 units. those will likely be rented out rather than sold individually. construction could start as soon as this summer. you can read more about that story in the san francisco business times. >> another sign the real estate market is coming back in the city. shock and grief on the uc berkeley campus. how students are remembering a fellow classmate killed in a highway crash yesterday morning. >> drinking raw milk is becoming more common. the reason researchers say it's not worth the risk. >> good morning, westbound 24 this traffic looks good here. it's definitely wet out there. ♪

good morning. we still don't have a big crowd here at the bay bridge toll plaza. although in the last few minutes it's beginning to fill this. once you make it on to the bridge it does move well. time is 6:25. in oakland an apartment complex damaged by a fire will stay closed for at least the next

month. the fire broke out on tuesday inside an apartment building carport on adam street. firefighters kept the flames from spreading to most of the other units. however the property manager says the complex will have to stay closed because the buildings electrical system is badly damaged. friends are mourning the death of a uc berkeley freshman that was hit and killed until the oakland hills. he recently turned 19. he's from washington and one of only 1,000 students nation-wide to win the prestigious bill gates scholarship to attend uc berkeley. friends say he wanted to be a doctor. >> he will definitely be in our hearts forever. he will be remembered as i said really chill, really down to earth really nice guy. i feel so bad for his parents. >> yesterday morning kevin was driving with three friends when his toyota crashed into a

downed tree on southbound highway 13. they all got out of the car but moments later a pickup truck came along, hit the tree and then kevin. the raw milk industry is a booming business in california. but a new study by the centers for disease control says drinking raw milk can be risky. raw milk products were responsible for 36% of milk related sicknesses between 1993 and 2006. people that drink raw milk believe it has added health benefits but researchers say there is no evidence proving that. many men are known to knock down a few stiff drinks when their lover says no to sex. it turns out fritflies do pretty much the same thing. researchers found fruit flies become bar flies when rejected by females. the males often choose alcohol spiked food when they get turned down. the study found that may be due

good environment to go public it's a good sign they have good signs about the market. it looks like a decent day. the futures indicate a decent day. >> we are looking at eight days in a row of gains? >> pretty good gains. >> thank you for joining us. it's pretty march 16th. we begin this half hour with a developing story you will see only on 2. oakland police swat teams have converged on a home at 87th and birch there is a large number of officers on the ground. they have detained five people and have served several search warrants. we continuing to gather information. stay with ktvu for updates on this story. we are expecting to get new information from oakland police very soon. firefighters in napa spent the night putting out a large house fire. it started at 9:40 last night at a home on mustang road. ktvu tara moriarty is at the

investigation. the once the sun comes up investigators will head out there and get a better look around and pin point the exact cause. we are live in napa i'm tara moriarty. an apparent murder-suicide has sent shock waves through a gilroy community. police say an iraq war veteran shot and killed his 11-year-old sister and then killed himself. their mother is still unaccounted for. coming up the warning signs neighbors and family members say they noticed. the attorney for the iraq war veteran injured in an occupy protest plans to file a claim against the city of oakland today. 24-year-old veteran scott olson showed ktvu the hat he was wearing when he suffered a serious head injury during the demonstration last october. originally it was thought he was hit by a tear gas canister. but recent tests show it was a bean bag fired by an oakland police officer. >> the bean bag shot indicates that whoever fired it intended

to hit scott. that puts a very different light on things. >> olson's attorney is expected to reveal the terms of the claim in court today. they can't discuss the case due to the ongoing investigation. emeryville police are searching for a man suspected of trying to kidnap a woman. he's identified as 30-year-old bashar aremo. he forced a woman to get in the trunk of her own car earlier this week. she was able to get away though. he did try to rob another woman last saturday. he may work as a security guard. he speaks with a heavy accent, possibly nigerian. if you see him call 911. happening right now the cold, wet weather isn't stopping apple fans from lining up for that brand new ipad. lorraine blanco joins us outside the apple store in san francisco to tell us how big that line is right now.

>> reporter: yeah the diehards don't have to be out here but they just can't wait for the new ipad. the funny part is they do have a to wait for a couple hours. a lot of people out here came prepared with umbrellas, big jackets and scarves. whatever they could to keep warm. some apple employees dropped by with star bucks and bottled water. it started at san francisco flag ship store around midnight. the new ipad has a new stunning retina display. many are braving the rain out here for the new features. others admit they are just here for bragging rights. one girl we talked with in this line is only here because someone is paying her to wait in line. so what does she think of the hype? >> it's dedication i guess. i don't know if i would be out here for myself or something like this but i give them credit. >> reporter: they've got umbrellas. some were tenting. they have been here since

midnight. >> they came prepared. i saw people's chairs. i envied that when i got here. >> reporter: employees just passed out tickets so people can reserve the kind of ipad they plan to purchase. there is a limit of two ipads per person out here. protestors are also expected to be out here around that time. the work conditions at apples overseas locations aren't up to par. we'll hear from them coming up. for now we are reporting live in union square lorraine blanco. san francisco's district attorney is expressing his concerns over this weeks plea deal in sheriff ross mirkarimis domestic violence case. george gascon says he is not convinced that mirkarimi believes he is guilty. gascon plans to raise his concern at mirkarimi's sentencing on monday. mirkarimi's lawyer says his admission of guilt should not

be questioned. san francisco's police are warning of a robbery scheme targeting gay men in the castro visit. gay men are being drugged and taken to their homes and robbed. they heard of three incidents in one weekend. police are encouraging people to take steps and prevent robberies including never leaving drinks unattended and never accepting drinks from strangers. we want to go back over to sal. check in on the commute. it could get rougher as the morning continues. >> it could. right now it's getting a little more crowded in some of the areas. remember it was light at the toll plaza. it's not light anymore although i wouldn't say it's really heavy. certainly wet out there. this is i guess somewhat normal for a friday where you can see a little bit more space than we used to have. you will be waiting for five minutes before you make the on the bridge. not too bad. this is a look at interstate 880. the traffic is good. rosemary and i have been

working as a team talking about the rain moving in later. if you are driving this afternoon, shouldn't be good driving at all. as a matter of fact, you will be driving in pretty bad weather. keep that in the back of your head. if you are driving in contra costa county, earlier accidents have cleared. highway 4 is a little slow. not too bad after that though. as we move the maps over to the peninsula possibility of airport delays at san francisco airport. check with your carrier. 6:37 let's go to rosemary. all right sal. roadways beginning to turn soggy. another half hour before the official sunrise. we have plenty of gray skies out there. the winds generally light. sfo reporting 12 miles an hour. the winds will increase as the front right now over northern california begins to work its way closer to the bay area. south westerly breeze near fairfield. south easterly in san jose. and that southerly breeze by the afternoon and evening hours will begin to shift. and by tomorrow it turns

westerly. north westerly. a few scattered showers. this is your commute and on the way expect slick roads. parts of the east bay a little bit of drizzle and light rain. some of us haven't seen it let up at all. a sea di drizzle. even throw yesterday and haas night. 680 a few sprinkles there. the north bay has reported light rain from time to time near santa rosa as well as napa. this rain will intensify by late afternoon into the early evening hours. right now it's over northern california. it will move southeast. by this evening hopefully you are home from the evening drive. it looks like some of us may get caught. the heaviest rain expected by 4:00 or 5:00. 7:00 or 8:00 for areas around sf bay. south of that looks perhaps between 8:00 and 10:00. saturday a few showers in the forecast and a threat for

thunderstorms. sunday we will leave in that possibility of a few scattered showers. and our afternoon highs for the weekend will be cooler than what we have seen. right now we're in the 50s and not expected to fall back any farther than that. that's where we stay. at least for now. upper 50s and low 60s in the forecast for the afternoon. our temps haven't budged a whole lot. we will be soggy. it will be almost like a grounds hog forecast. i'm going to cue up that latest model where we expect the heaviest rain coming up. we are getting a up close look at the damage left behind from a tornado that touched down in southeast michigan. that twister ripped through more than 100 homes are damaged. many people spent the night sifting through debris. trying to salvage whatever they could. in dexter what looks like to be

here last night. you can see the candle still it will outside. gilroy police still searching for one more victim. her mother. they found forensic evidence martha gutierrez is critically injured or dead. no one has seen her since wednesday night. on wednesday police were called to this apartment complex after they found lucy luna and her brother abel gutierrez dead in a bathroom. it appears abel first killed his sister and turned the gun on himself. police suspect he may have killed his mother martha gutierrez as well. family members say after abel returned from iraq he was suicidal. this morning we managed to catch up with neighbors that are mourning this morning the loss of a very well liked family. >> good family. good girl. he played with my son.

he's nice. went to school with my son and playing in the park together. >> reporter: so clearly a lot of people in this community still coming to grips with all of this. the priority is locating martha gutierrez and trying to determine if she is dead or alive. abel moved in with his mother after returning from iraq. and police were called to the home because they were concerned about his behavior. they said it was erratic. they said at the time he didn't appear to be a threat. we will continue following up on this story and contacting gilroy place to try to figure out the search for martha gutierrez. for now we are live in gilroy, christien kafton. this fall school districts can choose to use ground beef that doesn't contain a filler that critics call pink slime.

engine problems. she crashed into the bay land nature preserve. she walked away with minor injuries. overnight we learned about a major break in the investigation of the killing of a solano football star six months ago. police arrested 18-year-old hasan. another suspect 23-year-old kenneth franklin was arrested shortly after the shooting. plans for a new college satellite campus in brentwood are moving forward. the school has outgrown its space. the plan is to begin construction on a new campus near highway 4 and marsh creek road. the school was just approved by the california community college board. according to the contra costa time. that means the school will have access to about $1 million in state funding. american idol hopeful from
