happy st. patrick's day. it's saturday, march 17th. cool start to saturday but pretty dry at least for now. >> we'll take it for now. >> let's check in with rosemary. how much longer for this dryness? >> we will have passing showers. the good news is we're about 15 minutes away from the sunrise and we're going to see some sunshine today. take a look at storm-tracker 2. most of us waking up dry this morning, partly cloudy skies, dealing with some patchy fog over parts of the north bay into the south, we do have a few scattered showers in the forecast. but most of this rain has passed off to the south for today, a mix of sun and clouds. showers will be with us today as well as tomorrow, even the possibility of a thunderstorm. our afternoon highs will be cooler. we'll look at all this coming up in just a few moments. the worst of that big storm is gone, and this morning the clean-up is now underway. allie rasmus is joining us live from berkeley to tell us more about the damage caused by the

storm overnight. >> reporter: in in case we'll show you some of damage avoided thanks to the sandbags you see here. this is the front of the berkeley animal shelter. yesterday shelter workers were told there would be high tide at the same time we were getting all that heavy rain in the evening. that put them in danger of flooding. they have had flooding here before but this morning one of the workers came out to check the salad bags did their job. there are no flooding problems here at the animal shelter. but that's not the case elsewhere in the bay area. with all the heavy rain last night, it did cause some other problems. take you over to highway 13 last night, it was shut down more than two hours after a tree came down on the highway blocking all the southbound lanes just south of the park avenue exit. no one was seriously injured but it did lead to a pile-up on the highway. >> it looks like they all hit the tree on their own, and then moved out of the way, then other motorists hit it. there's about 3 to 5 collisions. >> and in parts of north bay that are also prone to flooding

in the past, residents were very happy it avoid any flooding problems yesterday. while water revels at the creek did rise during the storm it wasn't enough to cause any serious flooding. and back out here live, in west berkeley, one of the workers is here removing some of the sandbags lined up along this garage. and he is just happy to know that everything inside is dry and all the animals are safe. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. it's expected to be business as usual today for the santa cruz beach boardwalk, despite the rising river. for the past three days, crews have been working to build a levee that will direct the river to the ocean. but the rain is definitely eroding the levee, just as fast as they can build it. crews had to start sandbagging around the 105-year-old boardwalk. >> i've been here my whole life, 49 years, off and on. >> have you ever seen anything like this is. >> no, i haven't. it's always been a straight shot to the ocean when i've

seen it. and it's surprising that it's running alongside the wall of the boardwalk. >> so far the rising river has swept away a staircase leading to the boardwalk. that's the only reported damage so far. more rain is expected in the area, though, throughout the weekend. amtrak trains are moving through placer county again after a rockslide brought the tracks, two trains stuck northeast of sacramento yesterday. it was around 5:30 last night when run passenger reported the train had not moved for more than six hours. and they did not get moving again for another six hours, when crews finally cleared to the tracks at 11:30 p.m. the trains were hauling hundreds of passengers between emeryville and chicago. and right now rosemary is work on the weather and will have your forecast in a few minutes and you can get the latest information in your area on our website at ktvu.com. a search is scheduled for 10:00 this morning for a

missing gilroy woman. a family and friends of 52-year- old martha guitterez held a vigil outside her apartment last night. they worry she may be dead or seriously injured. last wednesday her 27-year-old son shot and killed her 11-year- old daughter luna, before turning the gun on himself. relatives say he was an iraq war veteran who had been treated for post-interest management ic stress disorder. >> she called the police also. >> nothing was done by the police. >> police have released this picture similar to her 2000 green ford mustang. it has a washington state license plate. investigators hope someone may have seen the car this week with aveo and martha guitterez

inside. her coworkers describe her as a good person who noticed her son had changed since returning from the military. her friends are organizing this morning's search. cases like this are forcing the military to react. coming up in just about 10 minutes, a high-tech way to help returning troops who are traumatized, how it may be as simple as checking the phone. the u.s. soldier accused of going on a killing rampage in afghanistan has been transported to a military prison in fort leavenworth, kansas. this is new video of the military cargo plane arriving at kansas city international airport last night. cameras were prevented from getting too close to the 38- year-old suspect, sergeant robert bales. he is suspected of killing 16 afghan civilians, mostly women and children, last sunday. this is a photo of bales training last august at fort irwin, california. his unit went to afghanistan in december, bales' first enlist in the army after 9/11 and had been injured twice in combat over the course of four deployments, friends in

clouds, a few scattered showers, and giving you a live look outside our door, there's that sunshine. how long has it been? we'll take the mix, right? and we've got sun on the way. take a look at storm-tracker 2 once again most of us waking up mostly dry. santa rosa, napa reporting visibility. down to about half mile in some cases. so that good clearing has now left behind the possibility of maybe a patchy bit of fog out there this morning. we've got scattered showers off the coast. we've got scattered showers to the south of us, perhaps over santa cruz mountains, los gatos, morgan hill, gilroy little drizzle and light rain. going to back this up and show you that the brunt of this storm that steady, heavy rain we saw last night is now over southern california. the winter storm warning for the sierra allowed to expire. where we are seeing that winter storm warning continue is southern portions of sierra near mammoth, where we'll pick up snow today. but we're look like, at partly cloudy skies for the afternoon.

you can see it how the system sinking south, best chance for showers san jose into the south for today. but we're leaving in the possibility for all of us because we're going to be very unstable with this system now beginning to shift. as the trough hangs over us for the weekend, we're not only looking at the possibility of scattered showers, we're looking at the possibility of thunderstorms and lower snow levels. this system will bring down the temperatures. about 7:00, i showed you the showers just a moment ago, it's now 1:00 and you can tell with the afternoon warming, we begin to see the possibility of a scattered shower, thunderstorms, the pile-up of clouds when we see the afternoon warmth hit the ground. we've got 4:00 now, maybe nor the inland east bay, maybe areas near san jose, santa cruz mountains continuing to pick up a little scattered shower activity. and then in the evening hours we'll be drying out. but we're going to remain unstable for sunday as well some in a nutshell waking up with patchy fog, most of us colder than yesterday. we are seeing some good

identified. police say 51-year-old scott david fritz died on thursday morning while skiing near the eastridge trail. they say he likely ran into a tree but no one witnessed the accident. when he was found he was unconscious but wearing a medical met. first aid was administered but he died at the scene. a deadly industrial accident in berkeley has prompted an investigation. the contra costa times reports a worker was killed at berkeley forge and tool thursday night, when part of a metal grinding wheel hit him in the head. the victim is identified as 30- year-old ariel garcia, of san pablo. cal osha will be inspecting equipment and safety measures at that plant. new this morning, in his weekly address president obama is urging americans not to believe in political rhetoric this election year. >> any career politician who promises some 3-point plan to $2 gas are knock look for a solution.

they're just looking for your vote. >> the president says he has been watching the rising gas prices and he wants congress to end the $4 billion in annual tax subsidies for the oil and gas industry. mr. obama says the high gas prices are a result of unrest in the middle east and the increasing demand for oil overseas. president obama says long-term solutions involve alternative sources of energy and raising fuel economy standards. the obama administration is now unveiling options for its free birth control policy. it is focusing on ways to provide the free contraception to women working at non-prompt church affiliated places. churches, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship are exempt from the law. the policy says free birth control has to be provided to women at the cost of insurance companies. in election news this morning, the race for the white house moves outside the u.s. mainland this weekend and the g.o.p. front-runners says he is ready for battle. >> let's get ready to rumble!

>> the republican presidential candidate mitt romney is spending some time in puerto rico ahead of tomorrow's primary. he -- reducing government and boosting tourism to strengthen the economy. >> this is a state which believes in small government and low taxes. america, the rest of america, needs to learn what is happening in this part of america! the missouri caucuses begin today. missouri is holding a primary and caucuses this year due to a change in not natoing rules. rick santorum won the primary last month, but that didn't count. only the caucuses which run from today through the 24th offer official delegates. santorum is also a neighboring illinois this weekend. he criticize ode president obama in the president's home state. >> what president has done in the course of this campaign and the course of his presidency is

consider the plot to be a serious threat. the government has come up with a new treatment for returning service members who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. the veterans administration created an interactive app for androids and iphones. information includes screenings, resources, and linked to a crisis hotline. if a patient needs help immediately. >> we find even that very hardened special forces individuals very resilient people develop ptsd because of the sheer enormity and ongoing nature of exposure to trauma in the war zones. >> doctors worry that the stigma of veterans suffering might make it difficult for veterans to seek help. congresswoman spear has introduced a bill requiring a mental health assessment before each service member is discharged. government and military personnel are heading to fresno to learn how to farm. before they're deployed, the

specialists are being trained to secure afghanistan's voight al agriculture industry. they'll encourage farmers to grow food instead of poppies, which produce the heroin that helps fund surges. this is awesome reach back function where i can take a picture of a chicken and send it back to them at the usda, fresno state, and they get back to me within 12 or 24 hours, what is wrong with this chicken? what i can do to help them. >> the unit spent a week learning about planting, soil, and irrigation in order to tackle the key agriculture issues that face 80% of afghan citizens. state inspectors are ordering the owner of a merced county dairy to clean up after finding more than 50 decomposing cow carcasses. these photos here are graphic. inspectors say they found evidence of manure runoff from the dairy, leeching into a drainage ditch along with

dozens of dirty syringes. guidelines say dead livestock must be taken to rendering plants and lagoons that catch any manure from dairies are required to be completely contained with no chance of runoff. federal inspectors are taking a close look at a southern california nuclear power plant where several tubes have failed pressure tests. one reactor is now shut down at the san onofre nuclear generating station north of san diego because of a leak in three generator tubes. the tubes are used to keep the reactor cool. they were just installed a year ago. >> it is unusual for these rods to break so soon after they were installed? >> yes. >> this is not supposed to happen. nobody anticipated it? >> so far, the safety systems have worked and a spokesman says the reactor won't be back online until the problems are solved. more federal inspectors are expected to visit the plant on monday. two berkeley architects are turning junk into shell term this is the mostly solar power

food and beer vendors working feverishly in georgia ahead of the the st. patrick's day celebration. restaurants and bars are stocking up in preparation for the big day. one million revelers will be partying along river street to celebrate today. and savannah came in third on orbit's top 10 list of st. patrick's day destinations. it was topped by boston and new york city. san francisco is number 6 on that list. san francisco st. patrick's day parade kicks off in just a few hours. show you video from last year's event. funnier than this year. showers are expected today but the parade will go on rain or shine. more than a hundred groups and bands will be performing before thousands of spectacular. here's the parade route.

begins at 11:30 this morning at second and market streets, and ends at civic center plaza at 5:00. talk about it being sunnier last year, probably warmer out there. check in with rosemary to see if we're clear of the rain in the area or if we still have a chance of sprinkles in the bay area. >> yes, you summed it up. a true sprinkles in the forecast, maybe the possibility of thunderstorms. we do remain very active out there. giving you a live look there, we're seeing some parts in the clouds this morning. we can even see the sunrise officially. clone 17 this morning. and we will be with mostly sunny skies at times turning mostly cloudy, a few sprinkles falling from the clouds and this is going to be how we go for the weekend. giving you a look into the santa cruz mountains where we could be seeing a few light showers right now. you can see it there on storm- tracker 2. the creek filling within a food of flood stage some we're keeping an eye on this. santa cruz picked up about 23 1/2 inches over the last 24 hours. 45 degrees right now, san jose.

dry and livermore, 40 degrees. low to mid upper 40s around oakland, san francisco concord. these temps from 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday. so if you're getting outdoors early, you're going to notice that difference! 38 in santa rosa. 38 in napa. haven't seen 30s in at least a few days! we've been sitting in the 40s and 50s. so if you're headed to the sierra, be prepared. you're going to need the chains. snowshowers continue and snow levels will be dropping over the course of the weekend as well. down to 3,000 feet today. and then 2,000 feet by tomorrow morning. it's going to be chilly. low 30s in the forecast for the afternoon. here at home we're going to be cool as well. mid to upper 50s is about all we get. 55 san francisco today, 56 mountain view. and a bit soggy from time to time. extended forecast, that chance for showers will remain in the forecast for today. increasing clouds by monday night. looks like the north bay may pick up a sprinkle on tuesday. nothing like what we've seen this last week or some but we're going to remain just a bit damp for the next several days. back to you.

ski resorts up in the sierra are smiling this saturday morning after this recent blast of winter. this is a live picture of interstate 80 at truckee, all morning we have been watching traffic move slowly through that area. and we were there yesterday as people headed to the mountains, chain installers saying it was the most amount of traffic they've seen all year and despite the heavy snowfall the bad weather was not discouraging people from making that trip. >> we're going to chain up now and be off in a few minutes. hopefully maybe we'll get the last round before the lifts close today, and tomorrow and sunday. >> right now chains are required on all vehicles without four-wheel drive on both interstate 80 and highway 50. highway patrol says if there are a lot of accidents, they will consider closing interstate 80 in both directions. and if you're up in the tahoe area, we'd love to see your pictures or the facebook wall. i'm looking, i haven't seen

a powerful storm knocked down trees and power, flooded roadways and creeks were on the rise. and now this morning clean-up in some areas is underway. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. thank you for joining us. one of the problem areas overnight was the same spot where uc berkeley student was killed earlier this week. allie rasmus now has more on that and some of the other damage caused by this big storm. >> reporter: we'll get to that accident in a minute. but first we want to tell you we're in front of the berkeley animal shelter in west berkly. and yesterday workers got a call warning them about high tide and heavy rain. they said that put them in danger of possible flooding. they laid out a dumb dozen sandbags, blocking the area

that leads to this area. this morning workers returned to find that sandbags did their problem. all 60 dogs stayed dry in their kennels. >> very relieved. very relieved. the shelter is okay. all the babies are good! >> but elsewhere the evening and overnight rain did cause problems. highway 13 in oakland was shut down more than two hours last night after a tree came down on the highway, blocking all of the southbound lanes just south of the park avenue exit. no one was seriously injured when this tree came down last night. but it did lead to a pile-up on the highway. >> we've been having quite a bit of rain here the last week on, so the ground is well saturated right now. >> so three to five cars got in

an accident on that part of the highway because of that downed tree but only one person was -- had minor injuries. this is the second tree to fall on highway 13 so far this week. and one came down in the same area earlier this week, where a -- that tree coming down led to a car accident that killed -- a student. with all the heavy rain we've had, experts say now is the time to check the soil around your trees, make sure they're not leaning or looking like they'll topple over, as it can lead to problems. allie rasmus, ktvu channel news. sandbags are standing by as the water runs down the hills and right into the creek. this is video of what the creek looked like yesterday. the lack of rain this year means the creek is not as high as usual p still about feet away from the flood levels of previous years. >> one time we had water going from my curve to across our neighbor's driveway curb. there was no sidewalk, no

street. it was just water! >> and sonoma county a douglas fir came down and sliced two homes in half. a number of minor accidents were also reported on highway 101. the search for a teenager seen on a boogie board in a canal near concord has been called off. last night police were looking no the water near bancroft road and contra costa canal trail. they say they received a tip around 7:15, the search then ended when the initial report could not be verified and no one was found in the water. a good time for a power outage but one came at a ferrible time for basketball fans last night. contra costa times reports the possible lightning strike near a pg&e substation may have knocked out electricity to 22,000 homes in the walnut creek area. power was fully restored by 11:30 last night.

all student at st. mary's were watching their team in the ncaa tournament when the lights went out, heading into half time. fans had to resort it their phones for updates. >> we watching the game and all of a sudden it just -- all the lights and tvs just went out. we just like screaming like, what the heck? >> want to other cities to watch the game between st. mary's and the purdue boilermakers. they lost in the final seconds, 72-69. >> tough loss for the gayle but a great season. tip your hat to them let's turn to rosemary and look at what we're looking at for today as well as sunday. >> we're going to get a mix. that about says it all. we've got sunshine out there, we've got clouds, and we're going to see a few scattered showers. it's going to be the afternoon when we begin to see some of that pile up, even seeing a few scattered showers this morning. but for the most part most of us waking up with a nice break

from the rain. take a look at storm-tracker 2. a shower off the coastline there, we've got a few scattered showers falling over parts of the santa cruz mountains. our temperatures cooler this morning, and if you are waking up partly cloudy, mostly clear like the north bay s you're dealing with patchy dense fog. santa rosa visibility a quarter mile. this will be continue to be the case over areas to the south. looks like san jose south the best chance of scattered showers but all of us are in this boat for today. 40 degrees livermore. 45 right now san jose. widespread 40s around the bay area. 40 degrees in cannot cord. 30s in the north bay. areas like napa and santa rosa reporting 38 right now and again patchy dense fog if you're traveling early this morning. that could be aware of that heavy rain has now pushed off to the south and east so we don't have to deal with that. the winter storm warning for the sierra has also been allowed to expire because this front moves through, leaving behind again scattered showers and very unstable air, and colded colder air pulling into the area some how much rain have we seen?

more than an inch in the last 24 hours. about an inch or so near san francisco. 58 degrees -- 58/100 in san jose. i'm already moving on. but you get the. and we've seen quite a bit rain in the last 24 hours, adding to quite a bit of rain from the last week. 14 1/2 inches in some of the areas of santa cruz mountains since earlier this week. today about 7 a.m., we're looking at scattered showers on radar. you can see by 2 or 3:00, spotty in nature but there. widespread from the north bay into the south bay, then we'll move south as we progress through the course of the afternoon and evening hours and once sun sets, things start to settle down. so the days definitely longer. scattered showers in the forecast, cooler afternoon highs, snow levels will continue to drop down to 3,000 feet this morning, 2,000 feet tomorrow so what moisture we do

pick up could leave us a little snow at our higher peaks. 56 santa rosa today, 55 in san francisco. if you're going out to the parade, low 50s in the forecast all day. 57 san jose. extended forecast, again a few scatter showers remaining for tomorrow, increasing clouds on monday. looks look we may get a chance on tuesday, once again with partly cloudy skies in the forecast for wednesday. temperatures slowly rebounding back into the low 60s. back to the desk. a judge in oakland has made a key ruling in a very public incident at uc davis. this was the scene last november when a campus police officer pepper-sprayed a group of occupy protestors. yesterday a judge ruled that uc officials can release their report about the spraying, but any sections that reveal personal details about the police officers will have to remain sealed for now. >> the goal was not to try and

avoid releasing the entire reports. it was just certain sections. >> we think the public has a right to this information and should get it as soon as possible. >> an attorney for the police officers says one of his clients is being threatened. he emphasized that is why sections of that report needed to remain to be sealed. both sides will be back in court on the 28th of this month. that's when the judge is expected to rule on whether to release the rest of that report. contra costa county's former top vice officer is now facing new accusations from a woman who allegedly ran a brothel in pleasant hill. there are reports that former commander norman welch received money from the brothel owner. welch would get weekly payments and protect the business from raids. his lawyer is not addressing the new claims. in august he was indicted by a federal grand jury on corruption charges and one count of extortion in connection with that brothel. law enforcement in contra costa county believes two men are responsible for a recent

and violent crime spree. the contra costa times reports the armed robbers mugged the owner of a cell phone store in hercules wednesday night. the victim was carrying about $8,000 in cash when attacked. the robber scooped up the money and then later robbed a convenience store in the fast- food restaurant in terra hills. a jack london square bar is reborn, almost a year after a deadly shooting. the night light lounge opened yesterday in brad way and third in oakland. that's a former home of sweet jimmy's nightclub, which closed after shooting left two people dead and five others wounded last april. the new owners called the night lights opening another sign of the area's very vitalization. the gold dust lounge does not qualify as a historic landmark. this means a new retail tenant could replace the bar. the property's landlords say a clause in the lease allows for eviction, with 90 days' notice. bar owners say the clause was

of scatter showers, maybe a thunderstorm. i'll break it down coming up in just a little bit. the worst of the storm may be gone, and this morning the clean-up is definitely underway. allie rasmus joins us now from berkeley to tell us more about the damage that was caused by the storm overnight. >> reporter: in the case here at berkeley animal shelter, we'ring it you about the damage that didn't happen. yesterday workers were warned about high tide and heavy rains happening at the same time in the evening, so they put out these sandbags and lined them up all the way long the garage here, flock the entrance to the dog and cat kennel area. and the sandbags worked. workers removed them early this morning. they had no flooding problems here last night. but it was something they were definitely worried about because the shelter has flooded twice before in the past several years. >> we have all the electronics in the office, so the computers, all that kind of stuff, will get flooded. and back here we have the dogs

in the kennel and only about 6 inches from this point here. so if it floods, it could make things uncomfortable. >> again, they had no flooding problems here at the shelter. but elsewhere the evening and overnight rain did cause problems. highway 13 in oakland was shut down for more than two hours last night, a tree came down on the highway blocking all the southbound lanes just south of the park avenue exit. no one was sear russly injured. but it did lead to a multi-car crash on the highway. >> we have been having quite a bit of rain the last week or so. the ground is pretty well saturated right now. >> this is the second tree to fall on highway 13 so far this week. this one came down in the same spot where another downed tree led to a much more serious accident earlier this week. that accident ended up killing a 19-year-old uc berkeley student on thursday. in other parts of the east bay, they are still cleaning up from last night's storm. we just got word from pg&e and 10 minutes ago that there are

about 540 customers, pg&e customers, in the walnut creek area near the shell ridge open space preserve who don't have power this morning because of a downed power line in that area. no word yet from pg&e on when they'll get the power back on for those folks. so far the santa cruz beach boardwalk plans to open today, despite the rising river. for the past three days crews have been working to build a levee. but the recent rain is eroding the levee, just as fast as crews can build it. and crews had to start sandbagging around the 105-year- old boardwalk. >> i've been here my whole life, 49 years, off and on. >> have you ever seen nick lying this? >> , i haven't. it's been a straight shot to the ocean when i've seen it. and it's surprising it's running alongside the walls of board whack. >> so far the rising river has swept away a staircase leading to the boardwalk. that's the only damage reported so far. more rain is expected in the

previous years. >> one time we had water going from my curb all the way to across our neighbor's driveway curb. there was no sidewalk, no street. it was just water! >> and in sonoma county, a douglas fir came down and sliced two homes in half. one of the homes was vacant. no one was injured. a number of minor accidents also reported on highway 101. the search for a teenager in a canal is now over. crews were sent out around 7:15 last night after a report of someone in the canal on a boogie board. police were looking in the water near bancroft road in contra costa canal trail. the search ended when the initial report could not be verified and no one was found in the water. if you live in contra costa county, and are worried about flooding, you can pick up free sandbags. just bring your shovel to one of five locations.

this is for unon corp rated county residents. right now hundreds of homes in walnut creek are still without power. that out. started just about an hour ago in the area of homestead avenue, marshall and shell ridge open space. pg&e crews are on the way. they say a power line is down, but they don't know what caused the power outage and don't know what -- when the power will be restored. another power outage in walnut creek left 22,000 people in the dark. the contra costa times reports a possible lightning strike near a pg&e substation may have knocked out the lights last night. crews restored the electricity by 11:30 last night. unfortunately, it was not time to make them happy. student at s mary's watching their team in the nato

year's event. showers are expected off and on today. but the parade will go on rain or shine including more than 100 floats, dance groups, marching bands and thousands of participants. a key ruling has been made in a highway publicized incident at uc davis. this was the scene last november when a campus police officer pepper-sprayed a group of occupy protestors. yesterday a judge ruled that uc officials can release their report about the spraying. but any sections that reveal personal details about the police officers will have to remain sealed for now. >> our goal was not to try and avoid releasing the entire reports. it was just a certain section. >> we think the public has a right to this information and should get it as soon as possible. >> an attorney for the police officers says one every husband clients is being threaten and he emphasized this is why sections of that report need to be sealed. both sides will be back in court on the 28th of this

month, when the judge is expected to rule on whether to release the rest of that report. contra costa county's former top vice officer is now facing new accusations from a woman who allegedly ran a brothel in pleasant hill. there are reports that former commander norman welch received money from the don'ted owner. welch would get weekly payments and then protect the business from raids. his lawyer is not addressing the new claims but back in august he was indicted by a federal grand jury on corruption charges and one count of extortion in connection with the brothel. law enforcement in contra costa county believes two men are responsible for a recent and violent crime spree. the contra costa times reports the armed robber's mugged the owner. a criminal phone store in hercules wednesday night. the victim was carrying about $8,000 in cash when he was attacked. the robbers scooped up the money and later robbed a convenience store and fast-food restaurant in terra hills. a jack london square bar is

reborn. almost a year after a deadly shooting, the night light lounge opened yesterday in oakland. it's a former home of sweet jimmy's nightclub, which closed after a shooting left two people dead and five others wounded last april. the new owners called the night lights opening another sign of the area's revitalization. san francisco's gold dust lounge does not qualify pass an historic landmark this. means a new retail tenant could replace the bar. landlord says a clause in the lease allows for eviction with 90 days' notice. bar owners say that clause was added without their knowledge. the historic preservation commission is set to vote on the bar's status wednesday. people living in san francisco's castro district are reacting to a recent spoke in robberies. police say the victims are gay men who meet a stranger at a bar, go home with them, and then get robbed. one victim says he believes

a 19-year-old uc berkeley student. a new search will begin at 10:00 this morning for a missing gilroy woman. police worry 52-year-old martha guitterez may have within fact by her son. last wednesday her 27-year-old son shot and killed her 11-year- old daughter, his sister luna before turning the gun on himself. and an army soldier accused of killing 16 afghan civilians has been transported to a military prison in fort leavenworth, kansas. staff sergeant robert bales is confined to his own cell. this afternoon there will be a protest at fremont's little kabul against the shooting rampage and the koran burnings. at least three bombs have gone off in the city of damascus, syria, tearing through government buildings and an army bus. gunfire followed, sending people who gathered in the area running for cover. state television reporting the bombs were set off by rebel

for failing to do enough about child sex bows allegations against former assistant coach jerry sandusky. paterno died of lung cancer two months later. if you own a civic hybrid, you could be getting some cash soon now that a judge has approved a settlement in a lawsuit against honda although some say it's not enough. the suit was filed over honda's mileage claims. the civic hybrid promised to get 50 miles to the gallon but thousands of drivers say it does not. >> wow, i'm getting 30.9 miles per gallon now bus of was on the highway coming down from los angeles. >> heather peters sued honda on her own for $10,000, claiming the battery is bad and she won. the suit would only give civic owners around $200 each. the problem is replacing the battery costs about $3500. peters says honda should replace the batteries, which could cost billions. things are become to normal this morning at dallas/fort worth international airport.

but that was after the fbi had to career a bomb threat on a united expression flight from los angeles yesterday. there was a note on a bathroom mirror saying there was a bomb onboard. the plane landed safely in the passengers were moved out while agents investigated. the fbi is interviewing the passengers and crew. but agents are not saying if there are any suspects. a hot-air balloon ride above arizona took a dangerous turn. the balloon got caught up in some power lines and then caught fire. there's the results of what happened. nine people were in the bisquit at the time. two of them are being treated for minor burns from the melting balloon fabric. they are listed in stable conditions. but firefighters say the outcome could have been a lot worse. >> as soon as it hit, it started the sparks generated and then it caught the balloon, more than likely on fire. >> the faa and the national transportation safety board are

wood road. pge crew told us they were going to be testing this line -- this power line you are looking at to see if that's the source of the problem. no word on when this problem will be resolved. and when the 170 customers will get lights back on. elsewhere in the east bay people took steps to prevent flooding problems from last night's storm. we had heavy rains last night, downed power lines and trees. this neighborhood is at sea level. it is prone to flooding. workers at the berkley animal shelter lined up sandbags leading to the dog and cat kennels to make sure animals were dry. this morning they checked. there were no flooding problems. in oakland on highway 13 south of park avenue exit a large tree came down and blocked southbound lanes of that highway. that happened before 10:00. the tree that fell came down in the same area where another tree fell on the highway

earlier this week. that accident caused a serious accident that killed a 19 year- old uc burkeley student. cleanup is underway in the east bay. at walnut creek pge crews are in the area at lake wood road and la vista drive. that's where 170 customers without power. no word on when the power will be back on. crews are working on it. it is expected to be business as usual today for the santa cruz beach board walk. for the past three days we have been watching crews working to build a levee that will direct the river to the ocean. the recent rain is eroding the levee as fast as they can build it. >> i have been here my whole life 49 years. >> have you ever seen anything like this? >> no i haven't. it has always been a straight

today. parade will go on no matter what. including 100 floats, dance groups, marching bands and thousands of people watching. federal inspectors are taking a close look at a southern california nuclear power plant with several tubes failed pressure tests. one reactor is shut down at the generating station north of san diego. it is because of a leak in three generator tubes. tubes are used to keep the reactor cool. they were installed a year-ago. >> is it unusual for these rods to break so soon as they were installed? >> yes. this is not supposed to happen. nobody anticipated it. >> so far safety systems have worked. a spokesperson says the reactor won't be back online until the problems are solved. more inspectors will be visiting the plant on monday. state inspectors are ordering the owner of a merced

shooting rampage. this morning 500 people with without electricity in walnut creek. we are in the affected area with more on what caused the outage and how neighbors first spotted the problem. >> reporter: we are in the neighbor near lake wood road and homestead. this neighbor affected is near the area of the shell ridge open space preserve in walnut creek. power has been out since this morning. we talked to a neighbor nearby who said she saw what looked like an electrical fire coming from the power pole. this is before the electricity went out there morning. there were 540 homes in this area without electricity. now they have been able to get the number down. now there are 170 customers without power. we followed pge crews through the neighborhood.

a 15-year-old girl. her name is sierra lamar. she was last seen at 6:00 yesterday morning in santa clara county near san jose. she was headed to school but never made it there. authorities are concerned because lamar does not have a history of running away. she is 5'2", thin build. if you see her please contact the santa clara county sheriff's office. a skier killed at north star resort has been identified. 51-year-old scott david died thursday morning while skiing near the east ridge trail. he likely ran into a tree. no one witnessed the accident. when he was found he was unconcious and wearing a helmet. first aid was administered by ski patrol but he died at the scene. deadly accident in burkeley propped an investigation.
