showers are developing right now. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is kutv channel 2 news at 6:00. and i'm ken wayne. a search is on for a teenaged girl missing in the south bay. ktvu's debora villalon is at the family home where 15-year- old sierra lamar was last seen. debora. >> reporter: where her family waits for word when they are not passing out fliers. sierra was last seen yesterday leaving here for school. >> i talked to her, said goodbye and gave her a hug and things were good and i told her i loved her. >> reporter: marlene lamar had no idea her 15-year-old daughter, sierra, didn't make it to school friday until getting an e-mail from sobrato high school that evening. alarming because sierra usually walks to a school bus before dawn, but the bus driver saw no sign of her and neither did her friends, all day. >> i can't believe that she would not contact her friends and let them know she is okay,

and do this. she would never want us to go through all of this pain. >> reporter: search teams have been probing creeks and fields near the lamar home and scanning for clues from above in the sheriff's helicopter. >> we have searched most of these fields, all the way up to the foothills as well. >> reporter: working oval her scent, the dogs have traced sierra's half- mile walk to her bus stop, but the trail goes cold beyond her driveway, suggesting she was pecked up. investigators are mining her laptop for recent contacts, but sierra is described as "happy at home and school." no relationship trouble or history of running away. >> did she purposely run away or does something happen on the way from her house to school? that is what wear looking at and still not sure. sierra's cell phone charger was left behind in her room and calls go straight to voicemail. her family is blanketing local shops with her picture, doing all that they can to bring her

home safely. >> come home, baby. please come home. you are not in trouble. everyone wants to see you. >> reporter: another look now at 15-year-old sierra lamar. she may be wearing a gray sharks sweatshirt and carries a pink and blue juicy purse. tonight's search will continue at least until dark. we're live in morgan hill, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. the search for sierra wasn't the only one today in the south bay. coming up in two minutes, the dual efforts today to find a missing gilroy woman. a stormwatch coverage tonight, a large tree crashed down onto highway 13 in oakland just before 10:00 last neat. it happened south of the park avenue exit. the tree completely blocked all of the southbound lanes of the highway, and even damaged some

cars. when the ktvu crew went by this morning, the roadway had been cleared. it happened though in the same area where a tree fell earlier this week, causing an accident that killed a 19-year-old uc berkeley student. this is what it looks like today on highway 101 in gilroy. cars with their headlights and wipers going. awn a viewer sent us these pictures of a huge oak tree that fell onto a house in oakland. the house is located near morningstar in the montclair neighborhood and as you can see from the pictures, that tree did some serious damage to the home. santa cruz's beach boardwalk survived last night's heavy rain. people came out to see the latest changes to the mouth of the river. earlier this week the river damaged part of the popular boardwalk. workers used heavy equipment to divert the river back on course and send it straight into the ocean. it appears to have worked. meanwhile the surf is up about

10' and the storms have made mountain driving especially dangerous with two fatal crashes this week. the rain has indeed returned to parts of the bay area tonight. ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is tracking where the rain is hitting. >> we had a little bit of sunshine, some clouds, some passing showers, a few thunderstorms, some hail and even a dusting across the bay area peaks of snowfall. right now in the maps i can show you on live stormtracker 2 the bulk of the action focused on the east bay and south bay. as we take a closer inspection to hayward and pleasanton, you will see the coverage here closer to concord and also fairfield. some rainshowers heading out to the northeast of napa and around st. helena. those yellows and reds do correspond to heavier thunderstorms and we'll come in

closer. these areas right now up towards buchanan road and east leland road. the activity beginning to diminish. we have clearing skies across parts the region, at least clearing on the radar. coming up, i will highlight shower chances as we head into the second half of your weekend. people at ocean beach in san francisco should avoid swimming or having any contact with the ocean because of high bacteria levels. the heavy rains with a power outage last night caused partially treated wastewater to flow into the ocean. warnings are now posted and samples were collected for more testing. there is also a high-surf advisory starting tonight at 9:00 and lasting through tomorrow afternoon. the wet weather in the bay area means more snow in the sierra. coming up in 12 minutes the conditions along the highways heading into the mountains, plus the bay area mountaintop that got a little dusting of

seminole for the latest on the bare weather, click on ktvu.com and click on the stormtracker tab. will you find live weather radar for the area you live. search teams fanned out across gilroy looking for a missing woman feared dead. they fear that the woman's son, iraq war veteran shot his sister and then himself. janine de la vega. >> 40 members of the county's search-and-rescue looked for gutierrez near mount madonna. meantime, neighbors did they are own search. dozens met at redwoods apartment, armed with umbrellas and a lot of determination. all of them want to find 52- year-old martha gutierrez. >> it's raining and cold and they don't feel the rain. they don't feel the pain.

they don't feel nothing, just the heart, because they help to look for her. >> reporter: friends and neighbors searched an area near bolsa road near bloomfield avenue and trudged through the mud, looking for any sign of gutierrez. with the steady rain falling some searchers worried that the rising levels might hide the evidence. police say they believe gut's 27-year-old son seriously hurt or killed her. today the county search-and- rescue team hiked into the mountains and covered 45 miles along with cadaver and police dogs. >> they are large canyons and it's mountainous and very, very rugged terrain. so it's not something that is off the beaten path where people might be walking by and find someone who needs help help. >> reporter: police say there is no specific evidence that led them to search that evidence. gutierrez's friends say searching on their own is the least they can do. >> everyone pray for her and pray for us to try to find her.

>> reporter: police told me late this afternoon that they have exhausted all of their leads and at this point they do not plan on sending andt out their search-and-rescue teams tomorrow because they don't nowhere else to work. two carjacking and robbery suspects were arrested today after leading police on a brief chase. officers the two this afternoon in san josi at lincoln and cutler avenues. authorities say during the police pursuit, ramirez hit two cars and a building before he allegedly attempted to carjack another motorist. today's arrests comes after an hours long standoff with police and s.w.a.t. officers yesterday, where the pair had managed to elude police. authorities are trying to identify a body that washed ashore oat the berkeley marina. the alameda alameda county coroner is

conducting ainvestigation. . new at 6:00 pg&e says equipment failure is likely the cause of an underground explosion in san francisco that sent a manhole cover flying in the air. it happened just after 10:00 this morning at the intersection of grant avenue and california street in the city's financial district. pg&e says when crews arrived, they could see smoke rising from the underground. nobody was hurt and no cars were damaged. cause of the blast is under investigation. crowds with out in san francisco to celebrate st. patrick's day. marching bands and floats were part of the action for the 161st st. patrick's day parade down market street. and with the luck of irish, of course, are famous for, the

sergeant robert bales has never demonstrated any animosity towards the afghan people and has said bales is "very mild manners." bales was on husband fourth combat mission when he was arrested. he arrived at the prison in fort leavenworth, kansas last night. so far bales has not been charged in those killings. in the syrian capital of damascus, at least 27 people died and another 140 were wounded in two separate bombings. car bombs exploded outside of government intelligence and security buildings. the government says the opposition is responsible, while rebels say the government staged the bombings to cast blame only the current uprising. u.s. intelligence officials say al-qaida in iraq is likely behind the attacks. friends of raw milk are growing despite warnings from top health officials. the vendor has been selling quarts and half-gallons of raw milk for the past three years and says he sells four times the amount of raw milk he used to when he first started?

>> all the rain around the bay area came in the form of snow. here is a picture of the lick observatory at the peak of mount hamilton. the summit picked up snow. an observatory employee tells us it was .5", maybe a little more. the mountain has picked up more snow during the day. more snow is a welcome sight in the sierra. you can see a big icicle on the camera lens. at donner summit traffic was moving smoothly u-although we heard about delays earlier. the fresh snow comes on 3-4' fa fell earlier this week. >> we got a little bit of a break this morning, but i looked out the window on the way to the studio and raining again. let's check in again with mark and going to be more wet weather throughout the night? >> yes, it almost seems the weather pattern is change big the minute. one minute you have clear skies bush well not clear skies, but partly cloudy conditions and even some hail and it goes away. right now on live stormtracker

tu can see the coverage out there. not everybody covered. if you head to the north and east you find more interesting weather. to the north of bay point, heavier showers, possibly a thunderstorm and also i have been tracking some of the act in the north bay, to the east of napa and also st. helena. so still some rain showerses in the forecast for this evening with the unstable weather apparent in place, and we could have the possibility of a thunderstorm and with that, the possibility of some hail. snow levels will continue to come down, down to around 200 to 2400'. so we could have a little more dust for the overnight hours. first thing tomorrow morning, partly cloudy skies, a chance of a shower and temperatures start out the day in the 30s to the 40s. san josi around 40 and fairfield, 38 degrees. it has been an active weather pattern over the past 24 hours. remember yesterday at this time we had that strong cold front move across the region? look at the circulation
