. cold, gusty winds, big waves and a warning for boaters and people along the coast. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> good morning. it's quite an end to winter. a high-surf advisory in effect right now with highs predicted to be as high as 17 feet. it's not just the high surf causing problems, but we could see the wind too. >> reporter: it is very windy,

we've been here since 5:00 this morning. it's been windy nonstop. in the last half hour, we felt the temperature drop and looking outside, we seen the wave come closer to us. that's because high tide is about an hour and a half from now. you can see a pretty rainbow. it means there's probably more rain and precipitation heading our way to the coast in the next couple hours or so. you can see it, you can hear it how windy it is. looking at the pacifica pier, we watched wave after wave crash into the pier. every once in a while we get a really large wave slushing over the top of it. there's a high-surf advisory in effect. called by the national weather service at 9:00, it stays in effect until 3:00 in the afternoon. we talked to a few people who

have been out here this morning walking their dogs, some of them said they noticed the waves out here yesterday. >> yesterday i didn't see any surfers out since the first time in a long time. i was glad to see they weren't out because it's pretty dangerous. >> reporter: and here comes that rain that we were mentioning. now it's raining here. the national weather service says it could get as high as 17 feet waves. wind is an issue for drivers. they called a high-wind advisory on the bridges. be safe, drive cautiously on the roads. the coroner is trying to identify a man whose body washed ashore the marina.

it washed ashore on the southern end of the marina. a restaurant employee made the discovery and called police. it's that of an adult male and there were no obvious signs of trauma or suspicious of foul play. all lanes of highway 24 near telegraph are back open after a car crash. a car overturned and crashed last night. it's not clear what led to the accident. it sheered off the side of the land rover. two people in the land rover were taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises. a man in the truck had minor injuries. time now 7:23, we have new information about the financial background of the american soldier accused of a rampage in afghanistan. he was in debt. his family says he was passed over for a promotion. los angeles times said he

hoping someone will come forward. they say she's a happy teenager and had no history of running away. >> can't believe she would not contact her friends and let them know she's okay and do this. she would never want us to go through pain. >> her family says her cell phone are not at home an all calls are going straight to her voice mail. police have exhausted all leads and will not send teams out to look for a missing gilroy woman. they looked for martha gutierrez yesterday in wet and windy conditions, covered a 30- mile stretch in santa clara county. they brought dogs and found nothing. >> test rainy and cold, they don't feel the cold and the rain, they look for her.

>> her son abel gutierrez injured or killed her. he shot and killed his 11-year- old sister before committing suicide. he was treated for post- traumatic stress disorder after returning from the military. a pilot's body found inside a plane that crashed this route to san jose last week. the pilot's gps stopped broadcasting last wednesday. he was flying from arizona. the faa says he was not communicating with air traffic controllers but his friends were tracking the flight. he planned to divert because never made it. one of the missouri caucuses had to be stopped this

. good morning. waves and wind are pounding bay area beaches this weekend. thank you for joining us tonight and this morning. time is now 8:30. good morning. 17-foot waves could pound beaches throughout the day and right now a high-surf advisory is in effect. live with the conditions outside right now. good morning, alley. >> reporter: good morning. the high-surf advisory in effect until 3:00 this afternoon and you can see evidence out here. normally, when there's a high- surf advisory, they shut it down for obvious safety reasons, there's someone out there, looks like he was taking pictures a short time ago of all of the waves crashing into the pier. a large wave will crash in and the water will splash up over the pier. we haven't seen them shut down the pier yet. if you look out here, you can see there are waves coming

right up to the seawall that we're standing alongside. and this is the far end of beach road. you can see the waves crashing into the rocks. the shoreline is underwater and as the morning as gone on, businesses and rain showers. people walking their dogs and walking along the shore and some said it's been turbulent since yesterday afternoon. >> i didn't see any surfers out, i was glad to see they weren't out because it's pretty dangerous. >> the national weather service says breakers could get as high at 17 feet. they're warning against strong rip currents, you can see that it makes sense because the

water and the waves here are pretty turbulent. they're strong rip currents and warning against some sneaker waves. north, the wind is causing problems on the create highway in san francisco. they shut down part of the great highway along ocean beach because of blowing sand and the wind is something drivers on the bay bridge will keep an eye out for. they issued a high-wind advisory. in effect until 3:00 this afternoon. live in pacifica. they're live in pacifica, the waves are big but not big enough for the surf competition. if the contest cannot be held -- time is now 8:32. a new tactic to keep her job,

the collision sheered off the side of the land rover. officers say that two people in the land rover were taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises and a man in the truck had minor injuries. a light rail train crashed with a car in downtown los angeles. the train was in the testing phase of the city's new metro line that opens in the spring. two armed robbers arrested for stealing new i pads the day they hit the shelves. gunmen stormed in the at&t store and stole about $30,000 worth of ipads, iphones and others. they were arrested and the goods recovered. we may know more about the moonlight fire. a forest service employee may

have been using marijuana while he was on duty alone closest to where the fire started. it could affect lawsuits surrounding the fire. it burned 65,000 acres over the course of two weeks. pg ande looking into what caused an explosion that sent a manhole cover into the air. police say it was fortunate that no one was hit. >> when we got here, there was a manhole cover about 10 feet away from the hole and it was in at least two pieces. >> when cruise arrived, smoke was still coming from underground. the smoke lasted for about an hour. the santa cruz county sheriff's department is hiring. the department web site has three positions posted. a third job as a correctional

santa cruz mountains. pacifica, half moon bay reporting a few showers. this is mostly to the south of us. mount hamilton, a little more snow. low snow levels continue for today in the areas. the elevation or that snow level about 2000 feet. along highway 17. santa cruz could be picking up a rain and snow mix. we have a high surf advisory to talk about in a few minutes. waves predicted to be as high as 15-17 feet. keeping an eye on the conditions down in pacifica, it's not just the high surf causing problems but the winds. >> that's right. we have been here since 5:00 and the winds haven't stopped since then.

there's a lot of sea foam that's been blowing up off of the coast here. all of this white stuff. we got pelted right before going on the air this morning. high tide is just 18 minutes away. the waves are coming right up to the seawall here. there you see the sea foam, that's what is getting blown up on to the shore. the pacifica pier, the waves, we seen them crashing into the pier. we saw a truck pull up and it looks like they may be in the process of closing the pier off to the public. you can see the guy in the orange jacket. he was in the city truck and it looked like they're getting ready to lock the gates. there's some safety reasons when you have people walking out on the pier and there's a high-surf advisory in effect until 3:00 this afternoon. we have watched the waves crashing up against the pier. a large wave will come and

slash over the pier. we did some people out there fishing, other folks taking pictures. this morning, we asked some of the people walking along the shore what they thought about the very impressive waves. >> i'm glad i'm standing here instead of on a boat. >> beautiful, we live there. it's always nice to see. it's beautiful. >> reporter: so they have closed off the pier and you can see some folks taking pictures. a lot of people want to check out the scene and see what the impressive scene, what the waves look like. the national weather service says that waves could get as high at 17 feet. they're warbling of strong -- warning of strong rip currents. the wind is causing some problems north of us up in san francisco near the great highway. they have had so shut down parts of the highway because of

problems with blowing sand. also drivers in the bay area are going to be aware of the windy conditions. a high-wind advisory in effect for the bay bridge. crews are working on the board walk. the river ripped a part a wooden staircase to the beach but there hasn't been reports of damage. workers used sandbags to reroute the river towards the sea. police have been out in several cities this weekend making sure that st. patrick's day drivers were sober behind the wheel. the check points set up in cities including berkeley and san francisco to discourage drunk driving. in redwood city, police transformed a quiet street into a check point.

>> people can't be sure where we will be. they have to question where they encounter us. >> this is one of four check points set up. if you're drinking, you must have a designated driver. police searching for a suspicious man that tried to get a young girl into his car twice. the man drove up to a 13-year- old girl on wednesday and asked her if she needed a ride. the girl ran off. when he continued to ask questions. the next day, the girl saw the same man waving at her when she was leaving school. the man is white, in his 60s and has short gray hair and a possible accent. he he was driving a faded resedan. >> the search continues near morgan hill for a missing teenage girl. she was last seen thursday

morning but never made it to class. deputies have been using a helicopter and search dogs to try to find her. the family members have been posting flyers hoping someone will come forward. they say she had no trouble or history of running away. her family says he's cell phone is not at home and all calls go to her message. a few dozen gathered outside of an apartment of martha gutierrez in wet and windy conditions and covered land to search for her. nothing was found. >> it's raining and it's cold and they don't feel the rain or the pain, just feel the heart. because they are helping to

look for her. p. investigators believe that her 27-year-old son injured or killed her. last week abel gutierrez shot and killed his 11-year-old sister before committing suicide. he was treated for post- traumatic stress disorder after returning home from the military overseas. a pilot's body found inside a plane that crashed on its way to san jose last week. the wreckage found where the pilot's device stopped broadcasting on wednesday. the pilot was flying the single engine plane from arizona. he planned to divert because of bad weather but never made it
