tree fell on her home. she was in her bed when a 100- foot tall tree toppled over yesterday morning. the tree was up rooted by creek and pinned the child on her bed. crews had to maneuver through snow to get heavy equipment to the hope to lift the tree. by then, though it was too late. investigators are combing through a teen's cell phone and laptop for clues about her disappearance. sierra lamar's family released these images today. the high school sophomore hasn't been heard from since friday morning. today the sheriff's office talked with students and staff members at her former high school where she was on the cheerleading squad. >> i know she will come home. i know it. i don't want to think of anything else. >> investigators say sierra lamar's facebook and twitter

creates haven't been used. jury convicted two men in a string of a dozen robberies in oakland. they were found guilty of more than 60 counts each in connection with 12 robberies over 8 months. prosecutors say they targeted asian families. they could spend the rest of their lives in prison. police say a man tried to lure a 13-year-old girl twice. it started last wednesday. police say a man in his 60s in a red sedan offered the girl a ride but she ran away. the next day she saw the same man. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is on probation tonight following his sentencing on a domestic violence charge. ktvu's david stevenson is in san francisco with the pallagy the sheriff made today and why it might not be enough to save

his job. >> reporter: the sentencing didn't stop criticism today. even as the sheriff seemed headed for a show down with the mayor. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi medwith the mayor this afternoon to fight for -- met with the mayor this afternoon to fight for his future. he was sentenced this morning in connection with a confrontation with his wife eliana lopez. his sentence includes three years' probation, 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling, 100 hours of community service, parenting classes. >> what happened shouldn't have happened. i am sorry. >> reporter: they welcomed his apology but says he should step down as sheriff. >> i don't think a few moments of comments today takes -- is any -- carries any weight over

what we have heard over the last 10 weeks. >> nothing here should call into question his job. talk to the deputy sheriff's association. >> reporter: the association this afternoon issued a statement that said we are disappointed any time a law enforcement officer pleads guilty of a crime. morale has been effected by this incident. >> i will work so much harder so that i can regain your trust that i have lost. >> reporter: ross mirkarimi smiled but declined comment this afternoon. the mayor is set to make remarks tomorrow. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. officials announced today they are canceling admissions for the spring 2013 semester and wait listing students for the fall. the move is shutting out 16,000

students who transfer eachspri. it is part of a budget -- each spring. it is part of a budget cutting strategy. at&t is trying to help reduce the nation's drop out rate and it is starting in san francisco. they announced a $250 million donation to its aspire program. it already gave $100,000 to gateway high school in san francisco and helped 9 greaters adjust to high school. -- graders adjust to high school. >> 96% who are in college and so we are doubling the statewide rate of college acceptance. >> at&t's program launched in 2008. new report shows a decline in drop out factories in california, down to 126. those are schools that graduate

less than 60% of students on time. the report says the state is falling behind in graduation rates. a charity is pleading for the public's help as it deals with theft problems. ktvu's robert handa is live at one of the donation drop offs to tell us about the losses. robert? >> reporter: we are at a hope services donation center. contacted us because they are suffering huge losses from thieves who are steeling donations before it could be picked up. >> reporter: she is a regular donor. she is upset thieves are targeting them. >> i am angry. it is like when you have your home broken in to and robbed. >> reporter: hope trucks collect throughout the bay area, donations worth a million

dollars a year. the program provides jobs and services for 2500 clients. >> it helps me to get more independent. >> they help me out like teach me how to label, to do the jobs. hope didn't want to talk publicly but now losses mounted impacting services. thieves figure out truck schedule and swoop in. >> that was thieves coming through the neighborhood and taking stuff left for hope. >> reporter: hope is asking donors to schedule pick up or bring donations donations to the facilities. >> this is for us. the money goes to the programs. >> reporter: hope with s

working with prese -- hope is working with police to see what can be done. live, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. the public utilities commission is considering whether pg&e can charge customers more to cover encaust of upgrading its gas transmission lines. they began discussions today to charge customers. they want to charge $2.2 billion over 50 years for the upgrades. critics say it is more like $5 billion. >> anything we are asking is to meet new standards being put in place. >> jerry hill joined the group. they rotested the proposal. saying rate payers shouldn't have to pay 95% of the cost. a law maker helped introduce a bill to cap out of

pocket healthcare costs. the bill would limit deductives -- deductibles. insurance companies would bear the brunt of the costs. supporters say it would be worth it in the long term. new express toll lanes will open early tomorrow morning, they have been converted to toll lanes. that means solo drivers can now share lanes. tales range from 30 cents to $6 one way. the lanes are set to open at 5:00 a.m. california voters may be deciding on the future of high- speed rail this november. they are trying to get a measure on the ballot that would limit spending. if passed it would prevent the sale of the remaining bonds

previously approved. the measure could save the state $709 million. a moral that bart station is about to get a new home. it shows parts of the city. it is 35 years old and showing signs of wear. officials will move it to the historical society. apple is handing out checks, the big impact. >> a few night showers and there is more in the forecast with rain towards the end of the week.

only on 2, officials in oakland are trying to determine what caused this house fire. we caught the scene this morning after 1:00 a.m. firefighters said two adults and four children made it out safely. the red cross is helping the family. a man suspected of kilting a girl 38 years ago appeared today in court. curtis tucker was arrested at a va clinic. prosecutors say a dna match showed curtis tucker killed and sexually assaulted 13-year-old julie mcelhiney in her home back in 1974. some of julie mcelhiney's former schoolmates were that hearing. curtis tucker is being held without bail. twin sisters who were found dead together in the house they shared have been laid to rest

together. the ashes were together at a cemetery. there is no word on the causes of their death. the sisters were 73 years old. scott olsen who was injured during a "occupy oakland" protest is closer to suing. his attorney says he filed a claim against the city and police on friday. it is seeking monetary damages for injuries he suffered when a bean bag fired by police hit his head. neither the city or the police department commented yet. the bill would prohibit a spouse convicts offend a crime from receiving spousal support from a victim.

a victim was ordered to pay $1,000 a month to her husband after he was convicted of raping her. two men died on the slopes over the weekend. new at 6:00, ktvu's ken pritchett is live at the scene of one of the accidents. >> reporter: frank, we are at tahoe ski resort. a 54-year-old man here died yesterday. that is three snow related fatalities in the last month. thereat number is difficult to put -- that number is difficult to put into perspective. the skier was off of a groomed trail, and the powder was deep. >> our ski patrol did everything they could. >> reporter: they said he fell

into a deep hole, created by an under flow of water. the exact cause of death is unknown. >> designated trail, off that trail, with the large amount of snow fall we received this week, there becomes an enhanced risk. >> reporter: a skier died sunday northeast of fresno and on march 1 another score died in an avalanche -- skier died in an avalanche. three deaths in three weeks. >> this is unusual, how unusual, because of the absence of good information it is hard to make an assessment. >> reporter: he says sense california ski resorts are not required to keep data, gaining

perspective is difficult. >> reporter: the california ski industry association says that the number of accidents does tend to go up after we have a major storm roll through as we have, due to the changing conditions and the number of people who head up to the resorts. as for resorts sin california reporting incidents or accidents, a bill that would have required that was vetoed last year by the governor. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. apple announced today it will start sharing by implementing dividends and sastock buy back program. this comes after the launch of the new i-pad. apple faced pressure by sitting on the cash. the plan includes $2.65 a share. apple will pay $10 billion to buy back stock shares.

it will cost them 45 billion dollars. >> steve jobs resisted calls to issue dividends so why would bp do it now? >> better question is what is in it for the investors to hold apple at this price. >> other analysts say the idea is troubling because it means apple doesn't know what to do with its money. >> today's announcement paid off for the company. apple stock closed above $600 above. closing $601.10. up 2.5%. official falls the federal aviation administration visited oakland airport today to promote the effort to reduce plane emissions. he toured toured the troll

tower -- control tower today. he said he aims to improve airlines on time performance. san berm is keeping the river from threatening the beach boardwalk. crews built the berm last week. the river ended up destroying a wooden staircase but there haven't been any other reports of damage. some of the rides were open this week. last week we had the strongest storms we have seen all winter. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking a slight chance of rain. >> last week was the heaviest week we had all winter. this week, light scattered showers in the forecast. the first few systems this week, not enough to shut you down. outside, picking up showers off shore. as the showers move to the east, they could deposit light sprinkles in some neighborhoods.

this is whether that is coming over a ridge of high pressure. rainfall we came up. 57% of average in santa rosa. 51% in san francisco. and 60% of average for san jose. that is huge, considering a week ago we were at 40% of average. things changed around for the better from the weather. overnight lows today on the cool side. there is the ridge of high pressure. you usually don't see rain over the top of the ridge but there is enough moisture it is spawning light springles on the coast and working its way towards san francisco. that is tonight and tomorrow. maybe into wednesday. today there was a chance of a sprinkle, that is how tomorrow will go. light sprinkles tomorrow. towards the week, gulf, cold
