will go out in parts of vallejo in an hour. how pg&e says it will help businesses affected by the outage. mornings on 2 begins right now! good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is thursday, march 22nd. topping our news this morning, a warning for children walking to school in contra costa county. tara moriarity is live in walnut creek where police are looking for a suspicious man who seems to be stalking a young girl. tara. >> reporter: that's right. this is a copy of the sketch that police have jumped released and they say this man is responsible for stalking a 13-year-old girl. one of the encounters he had with her was right along this trail. it's called ironhorse trail, and it runs right next to her school. the alleged stalker is described as a white man in his

60s, about 6 feel tall, medium build. he has short gray hair, high cheekbones, tanned skin, pierced ears and accent. he was driving an older model red sedan with a disabled placard on the rearview mirror. the 13-year-old girl attends walnut creek school and the first time she was approached she was getting off the bus when the man pulled up alongside her, asked how far she was walking and offered her a ride. when he asked where she lived she ran off and the driver fed away. now the second time it happened near at the trail back here live when the girl was walking with a friend and there's quite a distance between the two locations, but police believe this man is indeed stalking this little girl. if you have any information or recognize that sketch, contact police or the contra costa county sheriff's office. tara moriarity, ktvu channel 2 news. the mother of a missing morgan hill teenager is asking

landowners to search their properties for potential clues in her daughter's disappearance. family and friends held a vigil yesterday to pray for sierra lamar's safe return. the 15-year-old has not been seen since friday, when she left for school. no significant evidence has been turned up from her cell phone or laptop, but the search continues. another vigil is planned for sierra tomorrow night. in another missing persons case, the search has been called off for martha guitterez of gilroy, but friends continue to hold daily vigils. investigators say forensic evidence indicates guitterez was killed by her son abel, an iraq war veteran with post- traumatic stress disorder but they have not found her body. he killed himself amp murdering his 11-year-old sister last week. new this morning from france, we have more information now about the shoot- out between french police and an an islamic gunman

barricaded 32 hours inside a building. authorities ended that standoff, they stormed into the suspect's apartment. coming up in about 15 minutes, we'll get a live report from france. we'll show you the first pictures of that gunman, plus conflicting reports about how he died. back here at home, we know the car involved in an early morning police chase was stolen. the chase started just before 2:30 on castro valley and foothill boulevards in castro valley and ended less than 20 minutes later, on cayley avenue in oakland. the chp says the chase began when the car failed to yield. when the car finally stopped, both the passengers and the driver jumped out and ran away into a nearby neighborhood. police organized a search, but the two people were never found. happening now, volunteers are hard at work inside the oakland coliseum, where a free

clinic has been set up for people in need. lorraine blanco was there as the doors opened an hour ago and joins us live with the services offered. >> reporter: we just talked with the the founder of this free health clinic, stan rock told us this is his 663rd free event. he says the need has been become greater and greater for the last few years. now, inside hundreds of people are getting their initial consultations, patients having their blood pressure checked and answering a list of questions about their health before they get to meet with the doctor or dentist. more than 200 local medical officials from kaiser signed up to volunteer their expertise this weekend, cleaning teeth, do breast exams and pap smears and provide general care and vision. it's hosted by ram california, remote area medical. they started offering free health decades ago in foreign countries, then started helping here in the u.s. in 1992. the founder, british born stan

the embarcadero between mission and howard streets. look at the guys working there. you can see them for yourself. we told you about this problem out there yesterday, on mornings on 2. the workers had to put on protective suits. they brought their own oxygen supply to protect them as he went undergroundworking with gases. they were told the leak was about a thousand feet under that manhole cover. you've got to drink a lot of water to be out there. this is not easy, tori. the sewer line carries about 80% of the waste from the northeast side of the city to a treatment plant, but we understand again all of these hardworking guys there, they're wrapping. their work on that sewage leak in san francisco. we'll keep you posted throughout the morning. back here at home now, revised plan calls for the port of san francisco to prepare rundown piers for the america's cup race. at first race organizers have planned to spend more than $100

million in upgrades on piers 30 through 32, in exchange for a long-term development deal. but that deal fell apart. the latest proposal was introduced on tuesday and scales back some of the repairs with the port, spending about $8 million to partially fix up the piers. the board of supervisors won't debate all of this next tuesday. all right. it's 7:07. and we want to check in with sal, get an update on the commute. >> good morning. it's been a little busy, especially on the eastshore. earlier crash is gone, traffic still recovering on 80 westbound, coming out to the macarthur maze. also the morning commute is going to be okay here on interstate 880 in oakland. the traffic is going to be busy as you are driving out towards the coliseum. no major problems there. and the morning commute has been pretty busy in antioch. highway 4 of course, but also bay point, slowish traffic there, 680 between concord and

you can see the upper 40s to 50s. santa rosa 48. hayward 54. and san jose right around 50 degrees. here's the weather system responsible for today's cloud cover. at least for the morning hours. santa rosa picked up/300" of rain over the past 24 hours so nothing too significant, but still enough to at least keep the umbrella nearby in the short-term. partly cloudy skies into the afternoon hours, and wind speeds pick up this afternoon from 15 to 25 miles an hour. our forecast models showing cloud cover this morning, so here we are at 7:00. and also the chance of drizzle or a few sprinkles out there. we'll take this into friday, you'll notice we're dry tomorrow afternoon with partly cloudy skies. there's not a rain shield beginning to move in and it will move in early saturday morning. the first round of some rainfall, so plan on rain possibly heavy first thing saturday morning, off and on rain into the afternoon, and into the evening hours. and the cold unstable part of that system swings in on sunday. as a result we do introduce at least the possibility of an

good thursday morning. a weak system crossing the bay area, producing some clouds and drizzle and also some areas of dense fog, especially coastside. reports of dense fog around watsonville and monterey bay. some changes for the afternoon. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. time now 7:14. after began president karzai says his government is closely examining every detail of the proposals for afghanistan's strategic deal with the u.s. president karzai also repeated a pledge that any deal will have to respect afghan sovereignty. the agreement will lay out rules for american troops who stay on after most of combat forces leave afghanistan in

2014. both afghan and u.s. officials say they want the deal signed by a nato summit in may. also happening right now, in washington, the senate armed services committee is holding a hearing on the progress of the war in afghanistan. we're looking live at general john allen. he is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan. he is testifying as you can see and hear. on tuesday, general allen told lawmakers on the house armed services committee the relationship between nato and the afghan security forces remains strong, despite recent incidents like the killing of those 16 afghan civilians reportedly by an american soldier. president obama is deep in republican territory today. as allison burns reports, he is in oklahoma this morning to respond to his critics of his energy policies. allison. >> reporter: tori, in about 40 minutes president obama will be announcing that he is ordering

fast track approval of part of an oil pipeline from oklahoma to the gulf coast. his two-day energy tour is intended to rebut charges he stifling energy production in the united states and contributing to high gas prices. he toured a solar plant in nevada and a drilling field in new mexico yesterday. >> we're growing all over the place. that's one of reasons we've been able to reduce our dependence on foreign oil every year since i took office. >> his pipeline announcement today would remove a bottleneck in the oil transportation system, but oil companies and republicans in congress want much more. they want quick approval of the rest of the keystone pipeline that would bring oil from canada through the u.s., in fact republican leaders are holding a news conference about it shortly after the president starts speaking in oklahoma. allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. your time is 7:16.

two california men tourists on a caribbean cruise made an unexpected stop, jail. they were arrested yesterday for having sex on a gay cruise that had stopped on the island of dominica. a witness on the dock reported it to the police. now sex between men is illegal in dominica. the company that organized the cruise anticipates men will be released later today. an attempt to overturn new hampshire's two-year-old same- sex marriage law has been defeated. the republican controlled house in new hampshire voted against repealing the bill. the state's democratic governor said he would veto the bill if it arrived on his desk. the same-sex marriage law was passed by the new hampshire legislature back when it was controlled by democrats. later today san francisco bar pilots will try to turn around a ship that is as long as the empire state building is tall. this is the 1200-foot fabiola.

yesterday afternoon it became the largest vessel to ever enter the san francisco bay. the ship carries 30% more cargo than other container ships. bar pilots say this is good news for the local economy and the industry. >> back in 2006, when the economy was great, a lot of big shipping companies but in orders for vessels this size, and they're just starting to come online now. it's a big boon for the shipping companies. >> today presents the biggest challenge for bar pilots. they will attempt to turn the ship with just 100 feet of clearance on each side. it will then begin its 18-day trip back to china. new this morning, french police are looking for possible accomplices of a gun man who confessed to a deadly rampage throughout the country. officers ended a marathon standoff by storming into the suspect's apartment earlier this morning. reporter diana joins us live

from france. good morning, diana. >> reporter: hi, tori. you're right, it was incredibly dramatic. we as the press weren't able to get a bird's-eye view but could hear the gunfire, and we then found out what went on, basically the commander units went in, they had had no sign of life from the suspect mahommad merah for a good eight hours. and they went in cautiously. he wasn't in any of the rooms, and finally he burst out of the bathroom, shooting incredibly violent. heeding this operation he said he had never seen anything as violent as that. and merah jumped off the balcony and was killed by police with a shot to the head finally, a horrific end to a story that has kept -- captivated and horrified really this spate of serial killings carried out by this gunman. because of the lengthy discussions he with the chief negotiator, discussing whether

he was going to turn himself in or not, discussing why he killed three paratroopers and the children in that jewish school. and talking about how he recorded all of those killings and the prosecutors just said they found the videos, truly horrific videos, him running up to three paratroopers, for example, saying, you killed my brothers! now i kill you! you know, he had a lot of weaponry, still in that flat. he was making molotov cook tails. this do have gone on longer but france will be breathing a sigh of relief that this man is now gone. tori. >> diana, live from france, thank you. also new this morning, al- qaeda now says it was responsible for killing an american teacher in yemen. the group just posted the claim on a militant website. witnesses say joel sham was gun down sunday. he was accused for trying to convert muslims to

welcome back. the highly anticipated movie the "hunger games" opened in theaters tomorrow but it's already breaking records. fandango reports more than 2,000 theaters all over the country are already sold out. that ticketing company also says "hunger games" is already beaten the first "twilight"

on 80 westbound we have slow traffic from richmond as you drive out towards the berkeley area because of earlier problems. 7:24. let's go to mark. like a wet sponge over the bay area now, the clouds, the mist and drizzle and even a few light showers. but in terms of a major storm pushing through, that's not the case this morning but still we have cloud cover to contend with, primarily for the first half of the day. not a lot of coverage here but even if you're not covered, you can still have some wet roadways out there and enough to trigger the windshield wipers and reports of fog and drizzle right around the bay. just be extra-careful especially crossing the bay bridge in the short-term. here's a radar and satellite. the source of the overcast over the past few hours, so that the cloud band will continue to move in and as a result will keep the possibility a few showers in the forecast for this morning. and then for the afternoon hours, partly cloudy and breezy, so things begin to change this afternoon. temperatures will be cooler than yesterday, about five to 10 degrees with cooling, san

it's coming up on 7:29. in just about 30 minutes, things could go dark for hundreds of residents in vallejo. pg&e planned an all-day outage for parts of city as they replace a power pole. claudine wong joins us live now at the site of today's work. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. this is the power pole that they're going to put in to replace one that is getting older. we're on mountain view street and you can see they've got columns up to make room for the equipment they'll need to make this happen. this is going to happen apparently in the next hour or so. the cones say 7 a.m. this morning. so we do expect people out here very soon. we have seen some traffic,

managers out here to shut the street down. we've talked to residents here about this power outage. they'll be affected with a couple hundred other residents and businesses in and around the neighborhood. about this outage today will last the whole day, and they say how you are affected by it depends on what you have planned for your day. >> for me, it hasn't been a problem. and i haven't heard anything from anybody else on the street. they've been really nice as far as i can tell. they'll go by and wave. >> now, for a business over on tennessee street, it's a little different story. it's an ice cream shop and they need power to operate their business so the owner told the paper he will be shutting down today because the outage makes and impossible for him do his job. i also got a message from someone on facebook who was going to telecommunicate today but instead has to drive to san carlos to work because he can't work without power in his home.

so depending on how you are, what you have planned for the day, this will have varying impacts. you don't have to worry about light in your home during the day. but again, for the folks overhead on mountain view, there will be a lot of activity expected to start here within the next half our or so. the power outage will start 8 and end at 4:30 tomorrow couple of outages while they update equipment as well. sometimes these outages just need to be part of the process. it's 7:31. in brentwood a mother and father are dead in an apparent murder/suicide. last night the coroner's office removed two bodies from the home on fin way. police say they received a call yesterday from the couple's teenage daughter who found her parents in a bedroom. police say both suffered gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. police are not saying who was the shooter.

the parents' names have not been released but police say they were in their 40s and they had two children. >> the first thing that came to my mind is, brentwood? it don't happen here in brentwood. this is a better community. raise your children, safe place. safe haven. >> police are now searching for clues to explain what led to that horrific scene. time is 7:31. oakland police searching for a you haul truck involved in a drive-by shooting. last night about 11:40, someone fired shots out of a u-haul truck on international boulevard. a man was wounded in his chest and his hip. we don't know his condition now, but he was awake and responsessive when taken to the hospital. investigators are not sure yet if he was the intended target. a stockton police officer was wounded in a late night shooting. it happened last night when the officer tried to carry out a check on cold drive around

10:00. the stockton record reports the suspect accused of shooting that police officer was also wounded by gunfire. both of them are in the hospital. right now we don't know their conditions. they're calling a central valley man a hero. brian watts was driving in stockton yesterday when he saw a car crash into a large garbage truck. the driver of the truck was killed instantly. the truck driver survived but was trapped inside his burning truck. while others looked on, watts rushed in and pulled the man to safety. >> you hear him yelling for help, that's it. i'm in. >> the truck driver was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries and watts says it made his day to know someone walked away from the crash. and also some good samaritans to tell but in santa rosa. they helped a cyclist who this collapsed due to medical emergency. they spotted a mountain biker

unconscious on a trail yesterday evening and got help. medics say the man may have suffered a heart attack and had to be airlifted out. there's no word on his condition this morning. later today suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is due to attend probation orientation for court ordered class on domestic violence intervention. mirkarimi was served papers yesterday accusing him of official misconduct. monday he was sentenced to three years probation for the false imprisonment of his wife on new year's eve. meantime, vicky henson was sword in as the interim sheriff, the first woman to head that department. >> this is not necessarily a celebration of me becoming sheriff but it is me agreeing to be sheriff so that we can get the work done. >> the city's ethics economics will investigate the official misconduct complained against mirkarimi, then submit its recommendation to the board of supervisors.

alleged attacker and reported lover is due in drug court this afternoon. he faces charges underrelated to allegations he assaulted lockyer, the supervisor, at a hotel in newark last month. his lawyer told the san jose mercury news yesterday chi canny and lockyer were in a relationship last summer when she visited him in jail. lockyer is married to state treasurer bill lockyer. a cousin of oscar grant is now suing the city of oakland for $10 million. last month 24-year-old tony jones was shot in the back by oakland police officers after trying to run away from them. they had pulled over his car, claiming the vehicle was seen at an armed robbery. jones' attorney claims police used unreasonable force and the attorney says the department tried to cover up the circumstances surrounding the shooting. outrage over the shooting death of trayvon martin is

spreading. martin is the unarmed teenager shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain in florida. coming up at 7:48, the action taken dense the city's police chief and the federal agency now launching an investigation. time is 7:35. a group of san jose residents say a hotel crackdown is needed to deal with prostitution. they marched on south first street yesterday, calling on police to take new action to curb prostitution in the area. they want the city attorney to use public nuisance laws against hotels where the prostitutes work. >> i live right downtown, and i want my city to be pretty. i don't want no prostitutes in my backyard or front yard. they've got to go. >> the hotel clerks deny there's prostitution in their hotels. councilmember sam lacarteo says he is working on the issue and encouraged citizens to write down, document what they see. a camp friar is now blamed

for one of the largest wildfires in santa cruz mountains. the 2009 lockheed fire took 11 days to contain. it burned almost 8,000 acres. cal-fire now says embers from a fire pit near a remote cabin set off the fire. cal-fire has interviewed the property owner but says there's not enough evidence yet to arrest him. starting next month, anyone parking in downtown walnut creek will not need to carry change for the meters. walnut creek is installing 1,000 new parking meters that will accept credit cards or coins. city leaders hope the high-tech meters will' eventually allow drivers to use their smart phones to check for available parking and pay for parking spaces. with just 10 days left in the month of march, it looks like another year will go by without a mavericks surf contest. organizers say the conditions needed to create the giant waves probably won't happen before the window for the

contest closes at the end of the month. it will be the second year in a row without a surf contest. fans can still get symptom tastes of the competition. a mavericks festival is scheduled for march 31st in 98.7 county featuring food, music and pro-surfers. meantime, on land, final preparations for this weekend's oakland running festival. here's video from last year's run. later today a news conference and lunch will be held to welcome all the bigwigs. this year oakland's expecting 8,000 runners of all ages from 40 states, even six countries. first group will start running at 7:30 sunday morning, at lake merritt. >> hopefully the weather will cooperate. let's check in now with sal for an update on the commute. sal. >> we're looking at the commute, things are getting better out there in some areas. 880 northbound looks good. this slowdown usually doesn't start until later opso we'll keep watching it for you.

stocks opening lower on more signs that china's economy is weakening and europe is slowing. also the average rate in the u.s. on a 30-year fixed mortgage rose above 4% for the first time in more than three months. the dow is currently down 63. the nasdaq is down 13. and s&p is down 9. the signals from overseas are overshadowing another encouraging jobs report here in the u.s. the number of people filing for initial jobless benefits sank to a four-year low last week. the labor department says the number dropped by 5,000, to 348,000. and that's the lotted lowest level since february of 2008. it's a strong sign the job

market is strengthening. first time unemployment claims have steadily fallen since last october. overnight, soldiers in the african country of mali took over the presidential palace and announced they're now in control. soldiers were seen carrying televisions and other goods they looted from the presidential palace. there are conflicting reports on where the president of mali is on state tv the soldiers imposed a nationwide curfew telling people to stay off the streets. the soldiers say they took control because they are unhappy with the government's handling of a rebellion by an ethnic group in the northern part of the country. new this morning, the suspect in that horrifying crime spree in france is dead. but the terror he caused may not be over. pam cook is in our newsroom following the developments. >> reporter: this may not be over because they're now looking into the possibility that the suspect had

accomplices. at 3:30 this morning our time we received the report that the suspect was dead after that standoff that lasted two days in toulous, france. police say he jumped to his death after he stormed the apartment. they are now saying he was shot in the head. that's the sound of the gunfire that officers exchanged with the suspect who was hiding in the bathroom of the apartment. he again died after that. earlier this morning, french television released that, amateur video believed to be of that suspect. a criminologist says there were warning signs. >> he brandished a sword andes there's a complaint to the police which had been recorded in 2010, so a lot of signals that -- might have alerted the intelligence services on this guy. >> he is talking about the signals on the suspect who has

on youtube. the police chief of stanford, florida is asked to step down over the fatal shooting of 16-year-old trayvon martin. yesterday the city's commissioners passed a no- confidence vote against the chief. they say he has not properly handled martin's case. martin is the unarmed african- american teenager who was killed four weeks ago by a neighborhood watch captain. the watch captain has not been arrested and outrage is spreading across the country. this was the scene last night in san francisco, as more than 100 people protested the situation in florida. protestors claimed this was a racially motivated shooting. the shooter, who is listed as white on the police report, says he shot martin in self- defense. the justice department is now launching its own investigation. san leandro police looking for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman in her own home. the suspect broke into the home

police want your help tocatch an alleged stalker. tara. >> reporter: police have just released this sketch and believe this man is responsible for trying to lure a 13-year- old girl into his car last wednesday. then the very next day, the girl was walking near her school on a trail which runs behind it. she spotted him again. the alleged stalker is described as a white man in his 60s, about 6 feet tall, medium build. authorities say he has short gray hair, high cheekbones, tanned skin, pierced ears and has an accent. >> it's always surprising when something like this happens, especially around here. it's a pretty safe area. but we get e-mail alerts from the principal of the middle school any time there's a stranger problem like this, and i've talked to my about it many times. they don't talk to strangers, and i'm sure it will get taken care of. but i guess it happens

everywhere. >> reporter: the 13-year-old girl again attends walnut creek school and the first time she was approached she was getting off the bus on crest avenue, when the man tried to entice her into it case. the second time happened on ironhorse trail when the girl was walking with a friend and there's quite a distance between these two locations so that's why police believe she was being stalked by the man. tara moriarity, ktvu channel 2 news. the mother of a missing morgan hill teenager asking landowners now, search your properties for possible clues in her daughter's disappearance. family men's and members and friends held this vigil yesterday, praying for the safe return of sierra lamar. no significant evidence has turned up from her cell phone or her laptop computer, but that search continues. and another vigil is planned for sierra lamar tomorrow night. in another missing persons case, the search has been

called off now for martha guitterez of gilroy. but family members and friends continue to hold daily vigils. investigators say forensic evidence indicates miss guitterez was killed by her son abel in an iraq war veteran. police say abel guitterez killed himself after killing his 11-year-old sister last week. it is coming up on 8:03. the chp says the car they were chasing early this morning was stolen. the chase began when the car failed to yield just before 2:30 a.m. on castro valley and foothill boulevards in castro valley. it ended less than 20 minutes later on tule avenue in oakland. when the car stopped, both the passenger and driver jumped out and ran away into a nearby neighborhood. police organized a search but the two people were never found. in less than an hour, a mental excepty hearing scheduled for the suspect

accused of killing a man outside his home. the suspect, 23-year-old daniel dewitt, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia according to his parents. he is charged with the beating death last month of 67-year-old peter outside his house. criminal proceedings against dewitt were suspended so doctors could conducts mental examination. and a memorial fund in memory of suecore has been set up at uc berkeley. it was established by his family and they will ultimately decide what to do with the contributions. happening right now, a free health clinic right inside the oakland coliseum is open, up and running, from providing health care to the needy. lorain blanco was there to tell us how volunteers are making a big difference for people who really need it. lorain. >> reporter: good morning, dave. volunteers are now working at full speed inside the coliseum.

brief outages, so what is going on and how long will this last? >> reporter: tomorrow will be a short outage, it's only a half hour in the morning and half hour at night. and replacing equipment up grading it. but today it will be a longer process. it starts any moment now. they'll turn off the power and be replacing that power pole in that backyard. not an easy job to do it, they're going to need this huge crane that they're now putting into place basically going to put that crane over that power pole, lift it up and over the homes. that why this outage is going to last from now until about 4:30 this afternoon. who will be affected? this neighborhood, as well as some businesses over on tennessee, which is a fairly busy drive through vallejo, about a handful of business there. in total we're looking at about an estimated 270 or so people affected by this operation. pg&e says we're got to get this

done so they have warned people over the last couple weeks that this will happen. residents say it will keep their refrigerators buttoned up tight and try to get through the day and get through it. they obviously do it during the day because the operation takes lace during the day and makes things easier for people, don't worry about -- just pull up the lines to get through the day. that said, we talked to some residents who had to drive into work instead of telecommute, businesses are planning on being closed so it is having an impact today, pg&e saying those folks can provide claims to them if they're thinking they're losing business. you can see -- one last time the crane about to go into place. they told me the power would go out at:30, so it's hard to tell from our vantage point but it's going out any minute and it will be out until 4:30. it is 8:32.

we are following developing news in the case of a missing teen. the santa clara county sheriff's just told us five minutes ago that there have been some new developments in the case, but we understand they are not significant developments. we do know more searches are planned today. the mother of a missing morgan hill teen is asking landowners to search their properties for potential clues in her daughter's disappearance. ktvu has a crew on its way to morgan hill to cover these new developments. again, they're not significant. we don't believe that the child has been found. we'll have the latest information in our news at noon and online at ktvu.com. time is 8:33. police in brentwood want to know what led up to an apparent murder/suicide involving a husband and wife. late lasts night the coroner oars office removed both bodies from the couple's home on fin way. police say they got a call yesterday afternoon from the

couple's teenage daughter. she found her parents in a bedroom. police say both had basketball shot and they were pronounced dead at the scene. >> i'm in shock. i'm devastated. my heart just feels broken and there's something in my stomach that can't explain the feeling. >> the names the parents have not yet been released. but police say they were both in their 40s and they have two children. oakland police are searching for a u-haul truck involved in a drive-by shooting. last night around 11:40, someone fired shots out of a u- haul truck near 48th and international boulevard. a man was shot in the hip and chest. we don't have his condition. but he was awake and responsive when he was taken to the hospital. police are not sure if the victim was the intended target but they found no signs of a robbery. we're learning new details about a police shooting in

stockton late last night. authorities now say a man has died after a shoot-out with police. an officer was also wounded in the incident on colt drive. police say officers were talking with residents near a high school about a homicide that happened on monday when gunshots rang out. officers returned fire, shooting a 19-year-old suspect who later died at the hospital. the wounded police officer underwent surgery and is said to be stable. mountain biker had to be rescued from a state park in santa rosa. he was found unconscious while a trail in state park may have suffered a heart attack. the cyclist described as being in his late 50s or 60s, airlifted out of we have no word on his condition this morning. later today suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is due to sustained probation orientation for court ordered classes and domestic violence intervention. mirkarimi was served papers yesterday accusing him of

official misconduct. on monday he was sentenced to three years' probation for the false imprisonment of his wife on new year's eve. in the meantime, vicky hennessey was sworn in at interim sheriff. she is the first woman to head that department. >> i've had the privilege of working with sheriff hennessey for quite some years, and i trust her, i know her. i know that she will be a great leader for our sheriff's department. >> the city's ethics commission will investigate the official misconduct complaint and submit their recommendation to the board of supervisors. the man involved in a scandal with supervisor nadia lockyer is due back in court today. he is facing drug charges unrelated to allegations he attack lockyer at a newark hotel last month. he has been romantically linked to lockyer. the san francisco chronicle reports a sex tape of the two was given had her husband, state treasurer bill lockyer.

new this morning, information on the deadly shoot- out between french police and an islamic gunman who barricaded himself for 32 hours. authorities ended the stand offby storming into his apartment. coming up in 15 minutes, pam cook reports on the gun battle, how the suspect died, and the videos of his rampage he posted online. a campfire is now being blamed for one of the largest wildfires in the santa cruz mountains. the 2009 lockheed fire took 11 days to contain and burn nearly 8,000 acres. cal-fire now says embers from a fire pit near remote cabin ignited the fire. cal-fire has interviewed the property owner but says there's not enough evidence to arrest him. leaders here in the bay area and around the state want to bring high-speed rail here forecasted faster and say they have a plan to do just that. local political leaders say they're willing to split the 1

1/2 billion dollar cost to electrify the caltrain line. that could mean commuter trains would be zipping between san jose and san francisco by 2018. could also mean the statewide system would be running sooner than expected. we're told the money is available, but state lawmakers have to approve it first. caltrans is scheduled to close a part of highway 17 near laurel curb in santa cruz county this morning. the report says it's part of a plan to install a temporary barrier at a high traffic, high collision area. for example, there was a deadly crash last week that will take two days to complete this work. the caltrans is trying to get the job done before we get the next round of storms. >> and that video is from last week with all the rain. not raining yet. sal. >> we're starting there because traffic is still busy and right now it starts to get really

unemployment benefits was 348,000, that is a 4-year low. the dow is down 81. that is down 17. s&p down 10. this morning conagra reported third-quarter earnings jumped 26%. the maker of peter pan peanut butter, healthy choice meals and slim jim snacks reported a profit of $271 million. the company says lower operating costs and increasing prices helped offset higher raw material costs. the conagra says the price hikes have hurt its sales volume. today is the official launch of the next installment of angry birds, and it looks like the famous seattle space needle is playing a central role. something is hatched to the tower, confirmed on twitter that some kind of launch of is taking place today. but the company is not saying exactly what will happen. the new game will be available on apple and android devices, as well as pc and macintosh

year-old girl last wednesday and thursday in the area around tice valley boulevard. residents on high alert. new this morning, the terrorist attacks in france may not be over. even though the suspect was gunned down early this morning. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom with concerns the gunman may have had help with his killing spree. pam. >> reporter: it was a dramatic end to a long standoff in france, just about five hours ago. that's the sound every gunfire, officers exchanged it with the suspect as they stormed the apartment where he was hiding for two days. an elite team of police officers wanted to take him alive. but they say he was firing his gun wildly when they came in. they say he then jumped from a window, still firing, but was finally shot and killed. the suspect has been identified as 23-year-old mohammad merah.

a criminologist says there were warnings signs about him years ago. . >> he been dished a sword and there's a complaint to the police which had been recorded in 2010, so a lot of signals that should or might have alerted the intelligence services on this guy. >> now investigators this morning say this may not be over. they are now looking into the possibility that he was working with accomplices but have not said why they think that might be the case. they also say he did videotape all three killings that he is suspected of and posted those videos online. they say his motive, to avenge the deaths of palestinian children and to protest the french army's presence in afghanistan. officers are now reviewing that video. they say the suspect can be heard saying, you kill my brothers, i kill you! i'm pam cook, back to you. >> thank you.

new this morning, al-qaeda says it was responsible for killing an american teacher in yemen. the group al-qaeda in yemen just posted the claim on a militant website. witnesses say joel slum was gunned down sunday. the group accused him of trying to convert muslims to christianity. slum was from mountjoy, pennsylvania. he had been learning arabic in teaching english in yemen with his wife and children. two california men on a gay cruise in the caribbean have been arrested for having sex. police boarded the cruise ship on the island of dominica yesterday. when a witness on the dock alerted them. sex between men is illegal in dominica. the president of the company who organized the cruise says the men should be released today. developing news now from jacksonville, arkansas. the bodies of five children and one adult were found inside a

duplex. the fire chief says he's crews rushed to the duplex early this morning after a neighbor called smelling smoke. but he says no one answered the door, there was no sign of a fire, and then an hour later all of those bodies were found by a maintenance worker. there's no sign yet of foul play. the cause of death still has to be determined. the fire chief says it's possible there was a fire overnight, but then it may have burned itself out before firefighters got there this morning. back here at home, a cousin of oscar grant is suing the city of oakland for $10 million. last month 24-year-old tony jones was shot in the back by oakland police officers after he tried to run away from them. police pulled over his car, claiming the car was seen at an armed robbery. jones' attorneys claiming police used unreasonable force and says the police department tried to cover up the circumstances surrounding that shooting. the police chief of sanford, florida is asked to

resign. for the fatal shooting off 17- year-old tray have been martin. yesterday commissioners passed a in-confidence vote against the police chief, saying he was not properly hanking the case. martin is continue in unarmed african-american teenager and killed four weeks ago by a neighborhood watch captain. the captain has not been arrested and outrage about the case is spreading across the country. this is a scene from just last night? san francisco. more than a hundred people protested that martin situation in florida. they claim there was a racially motivated shooting. the shooter, who is listed as white on the police report, says he shot martin in self- defense. this is now being investigated by the justice department. southern california police say an attempted marijuana theft at a pot club was doomed from the start. this is infrared video from a
