and they don't slow down a lot of times. a crash does happen. >> yesterday a storm brought down trees knocking out electric to some customers in hillsburg. many folks say they are welcoming the wet spring weather. one man is in jail after he drove drunk and killed his female passenger. it happened around 7:00 last night in contra costa county. it appears the 44-year-old driver veered off the road and hit a light pole. his 53-year-old passenger died at the scene. both the driver and passengerred are reportedly from vallejo. a couple hundred people in san francisco are without power. the outages in the marina district within the last 15 minutes pg&e told us there is 200 customers effected. at the highlight of this outage

5300 customer were in the dark. pg&e is investigating what caused that outage. the bay area is joining the national outcry of the shooting death of teenager trayvon martin. allie rasmus is live in oakland where a service will soon be held. >> reporter: we are in front of the allen baptist church. they with one of a dozen churches taking part in what they call hoody sunday. they are having services in the young man pictured in this photo. this is trayvon martin. a 17-year-old florida who was shot and killed from a neighborhood watch captain. that captain claimed he was acting in self-defense. martin was unarmed. carrying his cell phone, iced tea, and a bag of skittles with him. he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt that has become a symbol of his shooting death.

suicide and the killer is dead. >> maybes say they hope police will be able to provide them with answers soon. >> for the police to find out exactly what happened. they have to know more about it. i guess it's not an easy task to truly find the truth if there is no witnesses. >> police have not released the identity of the victims. they are not talking at the investigation expect to say they are still looking for the murder weapon. people searching for a missing morgan hill teenager are not giving up hope even though the biggest search yet did not turn up any evidence. more than 100 search and rescue teams visited a 12-mile area near his home. he was seen more than a week ago walking to the school bus. the fbi is searching homes in the area and questioning neighbors about lamar's

disappearance. >> have we seen them? do we know them? how often have we seen the young girl? you know, stuff like that. do we know the neighbors. >> so far lamar's cell phone and the bag she had with her when she disappeared have been found. police are asking anyone with tips or information to give them a call. in about 30 minutes the first race of the oakland running festival kicks off. this marathon begins at claire park. about 9,000 people are expected to participate in the five races of various distances. we'll have a live report from the starting line coming up at 7:30. several streets are closed, there will be several ac transit service changes in effect. at least 16 bus routes will be detoured or delayed to accommodate the runners. a temporary hub will be set up at 14th and castro. people are asked to use other

home a few passing showers. weak listened they will be running and celebrating through noontime. mid to upper 40s. low 50s in the afternoon. a-okay looking day there. meanwhile around the rest of the bay area, we may see a thunderstorm or two. i'll explain that and bring you what i expect for your neighborhood coming up. >> in overnight news police are investigating a shooting outside of a sports bar. it happened just before 1:30 this morning on washington avenue police say two women got in a fight inside the bar and that spilled outside. two men started to argue and one of them opened fire. one man was shot in the chest and injured. at least one person was arrested. we have new information about a fatal shooting in oakland we first reported yesterday morning. the victim is reportedly a 16- year-old boy. police say they found the teenager just after 10:00 saturday night. he was shot in the head and died on the way to the

hospital. the oakland tribune reports the boy was from hayward and may have been going to a party nearby. no arrests have been made. that san jose man is facing attempted murder charges after threatening his family and firing shots at officers. police got a call from a home just before 11:00 yesterday morning. a caller said a family member armed with a handgun was shoving and threatening other realtives. >> the officers drew their weapons and one of the officers got shots off and tried to defend himself and his partner. >> neither the officers nor the suspect were hit by gunfire. the 27-year-old suspect ran out through the back of the house trying to escape. police caught him a few blocks away. the beating death of a 32- year-old iraqi woman is being investigated as a hate crime.

on wednesday the victim's daughter found her mother unconscious in their home in san diego county. yesterday she was taken off life support. the woman had been beaten with a tire iron and there was a note next to her body telling her to go back to her home. >> definitely we need to work with the law enforcement to bring the murder the cold- blooded killer to justice. >> friends say the family moved to the san diego area just about three months ago. the woman and her husband were working with the u.s. army to train soldiers how to adapt to the culture in the middle east. the victim is survived by her husband and five children. a group of marines will search pacifica to find their missing friend. marines from across the country flew in to help with the search efforts yesterday. they are hoping to find former marine joseph mchenry of san bruno. he told his family he was going

camping for a few days but he was never found. his backpack was found near mauri point. >> i have actually deployed with him. he lived right next to me. we spent a lot of time together. >> mchenry was reported missing an march 5th. police did a search of the area earlier this month and did not find anything. suspension of sheriff ross mirkarimi. the argument between mirkarimi and his wife stemmed from her desire to take their son to venezuela. according to the report, mirkarimi became furious when the subject came up while they were driving to lunch. they turned the car around and began cursing and screaming at his wife saying you don't deserve to eat. mirkarimi and lopez have insisted he did not abuse her. if you see police officers,

firefighters, and ambulances in action at san jose international airport tomorrow morning don't worry it's just a drill. they will be holding a full scale emergency response exercise from 9:00 to noon tomorrow. complete with volunteers acting like passengers and injured people. it will test how different agencies would work with each other in the event of a major disaster at the airport. independent review panel that just approved the seismic safety of the bridge. the sacramento b reports three of the four engineering advisors have financial and professional ties to cal tran. the three others -- design at the experts say these are conflicts of interest that effect the panels judgment. drivers should expect delays on highway 12. cal tran will install new dividers.

to arm the rebels or get involved militarily. the family of an american teacher killed in yemen is back in the u.s.. the father says his wife and two children have returned but he does not know when his son's body will arrive home. al qaeda has claimed responsibility for killing him as he sat in his car last weekend. is he had been teaching english in yemen. at least one person is dead after a bush crash and a tractor trailer collided. it happened early yesterday morning on the heal near the town of birmingham. at least 40 people were hurt in that crash. nearly two dozen had to be taken to the hospital. there were patches of dense fog but the investigation into the crash is still ongoing. venezuelan president hugo chavez has returned to cuba to continue radiation treatment. the trip comes a month after

chavez under went surgery in cuba to remove a malignant tumor from his pelvic area. pope benedict will greet tens of thousands of people in an open air mass in mexico. he worked to build the future of mexico's church yesterday by reaching out to about 4,000 young people. in a speech, he urged the children to be messengers of peace. the pope's week long trip to mexico and cuba is the first to both countries. a report shows penn state football coach jerai sandusky -- jerry sandusky was labeled a likely pedophile a year ago. the report shows a psychologist told campus police sandusky fit the profile of a likely pedophile. a lawyer for the victim is questioning why penn state did not take further action.

this morning police are looking for three suspects they say shot and killed a mississippi state university student. a school spokeswoman said the shooting was reported at a residence hall last night. three male suspects were seen running from the building and driving off in a blue crown victoria. they alerted students by text message. the school remains under emergency conditions. the hunt is on for a gunman that shot three people. people that live in that area say they were pretty unnerved. >> there was a lot of chaos. people yelling and girls screaming. i said somebody got shot for sure. >> i thought this area was really nice. that's the reason we moved out here. just hearing that kind of violence is going on is pretty scary. >> investigators did in fact release a sus -- did not release a suspect description.

they say it could be gang related. shooting victims are expected to survive. investigators say they need help to find a baby that has been missing for nearly a year. it has been 11 months before relatives saw 20-month-old dwight stallings. her mother did not report him missing. police visited edwards' apartment four time in search for baby dwight. there is still no word where her baby is. >> unfortunately miss edwards' stories have been all over the map. >> edwards' neighbors say they cannot remember the last time they saw the mother with her son. sometimes timing is everything. what happened when an inmate tried to escape from jail and found himself in the middle of a swat team demonstration. it's a drier start around the bay area for most of us.

invasion suspect is in the hospital after a homeowner shot him. this is new video from the scene at crane avenue in foster city. it was around 4:30 this morning. the homeowner told police he heard something that sounded like someone was trying to break into his house. when police arrived they heard gunshots and found the homeowner shot the invader three times. no word yet on his condition. as calls for justice spread across the country several local churches are holding services in support of the slain 17-year-old's family. allie rasmus is lye in oakland -- is live in oakland with what more churches are calling hoody sunday. >> reporter: we are inside the church. you can see the service here is about to get under way. some of the members are making their way into the church and they are taking part of one of a dozen churches in the bay area taking part in what they are calling hoody sunday.

the service here is in honor of the florida teen that was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain. that teen is trayvon martin. the watch captain is named george zimmerman. zimmerman claims of he was acting in self-defense. martin was not armed. he was carrying only his cell phone, iced tea, scene a bag of skittles with him when he was shot and killed. martin was wearing a hooded suite shirt a hoody. hooded sweatshirts have become a symbol of his death. what martin was wearing and why he was perceived as a threat sparked a national discussion on vigilantism, anuriasism. >> i'm in my hoody and this is how i walked around at 17. i was in a hoody, growing up here in oakland buying iced tea and skittles at stores. enzyme still trying to fig -- i'm still trying to figure it out. >> reporter: zimmerman has not

been charged with the crime. charlotte williams and many across the country say in order for justice to be served zimmerman needs to be arrested and charged. back out here live we are in the lobby of the allen temple baptist church. a lot of the members are trying to go back inside. the topic of the service is trayvon martin and what happened to him. this church and many other churches across the bay area and nation this morning. live in oakland allie rasmus channel 2 news. members of the new black panther party are offering a $10,000 bounty for the capture of george zimmerman. new black panther leadership announced a reward yesterday during a protest in sanford. >> we believe that the justice department has a history of covering up murders of innocent black men, women, and children. so gwen they must do their job

properly. we are going to step up and apprehend and arrest him and detain him ourselves. >> a statement released by sanford city officials condemn the group's appeal and leave citizens to leave all arrests to them. it happened around 7:00 last night at the intersection of tara hills drive. police say it appears the 44- year-old driver veered off the road and hit a light pole. his 53-year-old passenger died a the scene. both the driver and paysage are reportedly from vallejo. this morning investigators will continue searching for evidence at the san francisco home where five people were found dead. yesterday bags of evidence were brought out of the home which is across from city college. police say they are still trying to figure out if this was a murder-suicide and the killer is dead or if someone else is responsible and still on the loose. neighbors say they are hoping police will be able to provide them with answers soon.

>> for the police to find out exactly what happened. they have to know more about it. you know. i guess it's not an easy task to truly find the truth if there is no witness. >> police have not released the identity of the victims and they are not talking about the investigation expect to say that they are still looking for the murder weapon. the search continues for a missing morgan hill teenager. yesterday close to 100 search and rescue team members canvassed a 12-mile area near her home. she was found nearly a week ago walking to catch her school bus. the fbi is searching homes in the area and questioning neighbors about lamar's disappearance. >> have we seen them. do we know them. how often we have seen the young girl. stuff like that. do we know the neighbors.

>> so far lamar's cell phone and the bag she had with her have been found. police are asking anyone with tips or information to call them. right now thousands of runners are racing through oakland. the marathon and the 5k have already started. matt keller is live along the course for us with all the activity out there. hi matt. >> reporter: about 3100 people are running the streets of oakland right now. the marathon kicked off at 7:30. right now we have some of the finners from the 5k race coming across. they started at 7:45. this is video of the start of the race. several familiar faces took part in the 5k including mayor quan sounding the air horn and one of the raiders coaches al saunders also taking part in the 5k. the half marathon will start at 9:15 and the kids fun run at 9:20. the organizers say the goal is to get as many people involved

as possible. we have mayor jean quan joining us. what is the goal of this for you? >> the marathon had not run for 20 years and asked whether or not we could restart it. and it's been so successful. it has been growing by 10-15% every year. we have over 9,000 runners this year. on one hands city appreciates that. but probably what we really appreciate is that there is so many people that will come from outside of oakland and who come from around the country and last year i got some very nice notes that said we didn't realize how beautiful your city was. and we knew it was the verse but we really didn't understand what that meant until we came here and how friendly the city is. i hear that a lot from people that visit oakland. obviously this year with the

new york times we see oakland as the number five place to visit. >> reporter: it's moving from frank ogawa plaza to snow park. what is the -- >> i think that was part of it. i think they also needed more room. it's too bad that the lawn is soggy. you need a little bit more space for people cocongregate. but in this race there is so many community stations all along. there is so many places for visitors who are cheering people on to be. >> reporter: and the reward ceremony starts at noon and goes until 2:00. the next race here will start at 9:15. it's the half marathon. reporting live matt keller. >> right now marathon runners are traveling through the

newt gingrich and ron paul trail behind with 12% and 10%. but still they have little enthusiasm for the republican field. half of them said they would have rather had other candidates competing for the republican bid. tomorrow arguments over president obama's health care plan will be heard by the supreme court and the nine justices won't be the only ones listening. they plan to release the audio after the debate. it will be over to whether the government can force people to get health insurance. tea party activists will also be listening closely when tomorrow's debate begins. yesterday they held a rally from front of the capitol. they say they want the nine justices and president to know that the tea party is back and argue that the president's hack plan approaches a dictatorship and should not be tolerated. >> congress is constantly promising or pursuing things

national outcry. bay area churches are now among those demanding justice. >> reporter: we're inside the lobby of the allen temple bap test church in oakland much their service is underway. this service is dedicated to 17- year-old trayvon martin, the florida teen wearing a hooded sweat shirt shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain. as you look at the people here, a lot of them are wearing their hooded sweatshirts excluding the senior pastor who is speaking at the podium. everyone here is wearing a hooded sweatshirt in honor of martin. many chrch members heeded the call. we saw parents, grandparents and children coming to the service today wearing hooded sweatshirts. george zimmerman claimed he was acting in self-defense. martin was not armed. he was carrying a a cell phone, iced tea and a bag of skittles when he was shot and killed in a florida neighborhood.

>> it really did impact people. it did not just hit the people where he lived. it hit people in oakland, people like me. basically everybody i know has a hoodie. >> george zimmerman, the man who shot martin, has not been charged with a crime. there are people across the country who say he does need to be arrested and charged. what martin was wearing and why he was perceived as a treat by george zimmerman has prompted a national discussion. these are all topics that are being addressed at the service here today at this church and at a dozen other churches in the bay area. they're all taking part in what they're calling hoodie sunday. that's the senior pastor that you see at the podium. he is wearing a hooded sweatshirt, so are many people in the audience. it's in honor of 17-year-old trayvon martin. back to you.

martinez. winds are light. we'll continue with the possibility of a few showers and the temperatures this morning are chilly. san leandro police are investigating a shooting outside a sports bar. it happened around 1:30 a.m. on washington avenue. police say two women got into a fight inside the bar and then that spilled outside. witnesses say with two men started to argue and one of them opened fire. one man was shot in the chest and injured. one person was arrested. a home invasion suspect is in the hospital after a homeowner shot him around 4:30 a.m. at gull avenue and crane avenue in foster city. the homeowner called police and said he heard noises that sound like someone was trying to break into his home. when police arrived they hear gunshots. the homeowner had shot the burglar three times. the suspect has been taken to

the hospital. we have new information what fatal shooting in oakland. the victim is reportedly a 16- year-old boy. police say they found the teen just after 10:00 friday night near the east monttown center. he was shot in the head and died on the way to the hospital. the boy was from hayward. no arrests have been made. the beating death of a 32 year iraqi woman is being investigated as a hate crime. wednesday the victim's daughter found her mother unconscious in their home in san diego county. yesterday she was taken off life support. police say that woman was beaten with a tire iron and there was a note next to her body telling her to go back to her home. >> definitely we need to work with the law enforcement to bring the murderer, the cold blooded killer, to justice. >> friends say the family moved to the san diego area about three months ago.

the woman and her husband were working for the u.s. army to train soldiers on how to adapt to culture in the middle east. a group of marines say they will continue searching pacifica today to find their missing friend. >> we checked. >> marines flew in to help with the search efforts yesterday. they're hoping to find former marine 27-year-old joseph mchenry of san bruno. earlier this month he told his family he was going camping. he never returned. his car was found near sharp park golf course. his backpack was found near maury point. >> i've deployed with him. he lived next to me. we spent a lot of time together. >> he was reported missing on march 5. police and county officials did a search of the

area earlier this month and found nothing. a new report details the argument that led to the suspension of san francisco sheriff ross mirkirimi. the "the san francisco chronicle" is reporting the argument between ross mirkirimi and his wife stemmed from her desire to take their son to venezuela. the report says ross mirkirimi became furious when the subject came up while they were driving to lunch. he turned the car around and began cursing and screaming a at his wife saying, you don't deserve to eat. if you see police officers, firefighters and ambulances in action at the airport tomorrow morning, don't worry. it's all a drill. the san jose airport will be holding a full scale emergency response exercise from 9:00 to noon tomorrow. it's meant to test how different agencies would work together in the event of a major disaster at the airport. the independent review panel that just' proved the

let's good back to when it began. the start of the marathon at 7:30, about 15% more people are participating in the oakland running festival this year than last year. 1600 people took part in the 5k race. willie brown was here to show support. >> it's good, really good for the city of oakland. a big run like this is good for get be in shape. >> reporter: the winners get more than just improveing fitness. they get a $500 cash prize. every person who finishes the marathon gets a medal that says, 26.2 on it. that signifies the distance of

attempted murder charges after threatening his family and firing shots at police officers. police received a 9-1-1 call from someone inside a home yesterday morning. the caller said that family member armed with a has not gun was shoving and threatening other relatives. >> the suspect basically exited the house, fired several rounds. the rounds impacted a a vehicle near where the police officers were standing. the police officers drew their weapons. one of the police officers got shots off. >> neither the police officers or the suspect were hit by the gunfire. the suspect did run out the back of the house trying to escape. he was caught and taken into custody. the hunt is on for a gunman who police say shot five people in southern california. it was in desert hot springs in riverside county.
