>> reporter: tonight there's word that there is progress in the arrest. officers, yellow tape and reminders of the crime scene everywhere, residents here say they can't help but feel uneasy. 35-year-old fin luck was arrested this morning in san francisco for killing five people. >> so they made an arrest. what does that mean? we don't know. >> reporter: this man says he does not know and never seen the suspect in the area. but until a motive is discovered, he cannot be sure if the nightmare is over. >> i can't help but worry, i have to wonder if it's a connection to this person or any kind of a mafia. this is something we need to be worried about. >> reporter: the city's police chief refused to validate

reports that gambling debts were a motive. >> we do have information that we're following up that there could be prior gang ties involved in this situation although we don't believe at this point this was the case. >> reporter: chief greg suhr did not say what led them to luck, only that the suspect had a criminal record and subjected them to blunt force trauma and a jagged edge weapon. four of the victims are widely believed to be members of the same family. tonight friends and strangers came by to pay their respects. the suspects younger brother was also arrested this morning on unrelated charges. but police are investigating if he played a role in this case. reporting live in san francisco, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. more details on this case as patti said. a relative was arrested. police identified him as bryan

luck. to avoid confusion, police did not release his mug shot. he is a felon in possession of ammunition. now to that desperate search of a missing teenager. it has now been five days sierra lamar was last seen. just saying that number alone brought the teenager's mother to tears. >> reporter: heather this is the girl that everyone is still looking for. tonight new searches were planned, and a vigil brought together everyone in solidarity. eventually 40 volunteers filed into burnett elementary school this afternoon. michael lay led today's roadside search effort the first without police assistance. last year it was volunteers who discovered his sister's body after she was murdered. >> we need all the help we can get when it comes to searching, when it comes to getting the word out. >> reporter: we learned today daily search operations will

begin at the school starting this tuesday led by the kids foundation. tonight 15-year-old sierra lamar's family led candles at a vigil, meant to keep support for the girl who has been missing for nine days. >> i just want her to come safely home to us. i appreciate every effort that you guys are making to help that happen. you know. >> reporter: despite her family's four short months in the community, sierra's mother pointed out the donations and fliers. >> it puts my mind at ease that you guys aren't quitting. >> reporter: reflected by the pink and black ribbon decorating the more than 400 people or so gathered. >> i'm still trying to get my head around the fact that she's gone and nobody knows where she is. >> sierra if you're out there watching this, just know that we love you and miss you so much. >> we can't give up hope because everything is possible. >> the key right now for us to get people out, helping us

because it's still a mystery. it's still baffling. >> reporter: we're live at burnett elementary. daily searching are expected to begin tuesday. the sacramento sheriff is trying to piece together a missing baby case. involving a mother who is now in jail and a toddler who hasn't been seen for almost a year. law enforcement officials just found out that 22-year-old dwight stallings is missing. the baby's mother was arrested on thursday. neighbors say they can't remember when they last saw the mother with the son. but the mother never reported the boy missing. she's also not telling investigators much about where the baby is now. >> unfortunately ms. edwards

story is not matching up. >> reporter: now the baby's grandmother said he daughter said someone was watching him. gunfire was reported just after 1:00 a.m. out pagano's bar on washington avenue. 24-year-old juan quinn was shot in the chest. officers arrested santario revino. police in foster city are investigating the shooting of a suspected burglar by a house guest. the shooting happened at about 4:30 this morning at a home on crane avenue. after reports of noise and tampering with doors, police arrived and found the san mateo man with shotgun wounds. he was taken to the hospital. the shooter is a brentwood man in his 40s. at this point neither man has been arrested. a cosco in concord was evacuated for several hours

today after a hazardous spill. authorities say the hazmat team was immediately called in. the store was ventilated and reopened about five hours later. no one was injured. presidential candidate mitt romney is coming to the pay area for a high dollar fundraiser. the top gop candidate will appear at an event in redwood city hosted by meg whitman. tickets start at $1,000 and run as high as $25,000. romney heads to stockton on tuesday then moves on to southern california. campaign officials say romney has spent more than he expected at this point in the campaign. he's down to about $7 million in cash but still has more than $40 million in his super pack. rick santorum will follow romney to california for a fundraiser on thursday. the founder on online marketplace mark pine will host the event at his home in alamo.

the big difference between his fundraiser and romney is the cost of ticket. for santorum they will start at $125. almost $900 less than romney and only goes as high as $1,200. for a limited number of tickets to hear arguments on the health law challenge, most of those in line are paid line sitters. some of whom have been camping out now since friday. the court expects to hand out about 50 free seats tomorrow morning on a first come first serve basis. over the next three days, the court will hear arguments on issues whether congress will require every american to buy health insurance and whether safe must expand medicare. >> seeing jurors appointed by both republicans and democrats. we're confident that it'll be constitutional. >> this is extremely expensive. families won't have a choice. they're going to be forced to

buy an insurance product the government tells them they have to purchase. if they don't they'll have to pay a fine to the federal government. this is absurd. >> 26 states are challenging the law backed by the obama administration. that law extends coverage to more than 30 million of the uninsured and bans insurers against discriminating against patients who have preexisting conditions. there's word that the family of those wounded have now accepted financial compensation from the u.s. sarah sitner reports, tonight there's new information about where the suspect went on that fateful night. >> reporter: this case has become more and more curious, for every detail released, more questions emerge. the gunman left the base, went

to a village, returned to base and then left to another village. how did he end up in two different sreul lams with nobody noting. the other information that we received that compensation has been paid to the victims of the massacre. we're talk about a figure some where around $860,000. the equivalent of that has been paid in afghan in cash. for each person that died the family member got $50,000. for each person that was injured family members got $10,000 per person. this is a large amount of money for individuals who live in very difficult and dire circumstances. it's also a huge security risk for them. the area is known to be former stronghold of the taliban, kandahar is the birthplace of the taliban. but there's still so many questions left unanswered in this case. one of those was brought in today again. the afghan government says 16

people were killed in the massacre. but the u.s. government has charged army staff sergeant bales with 17 counts of murder and no one seems to be able to tell us exactly where that other person is coming from. we also can tell you that in this case that the victims had said they would not accept compensation that they only wanted justice. but clearly they have accepted some money from the united states. still they want justice to be done. kabul afghanistan. in san francisco, a mourning munni car accident has left a man dead. munni officials tell us they can't confirm what happened but witnesses say the man jumped in front of the bus. he died at the scene. the recent conviction of a man involved in a highway 4 accident in antioch has cleared the way for several lawsuits. 47-year-old john mcdonald was found guilty in an accident that killed two people on a motorcycle. prosecutors say he forced another car into the path of a

an emergency scream out for trayvon martin is scheduled for noon tomorrow. in front of the san francisco hall of justice there on bryan street. organizers say the event is for all victims of what they call racism and complacent police departments across the country. the reverend jesse jackson released his anger from a pulpit demanding james zimmerman's arrest and demanding change. >> if you lift trayvon up, if you lift him up he's innocent. he's smart, he gots loving parents, he's sober, he's innocent, he represents all of us. >> jackson spoke at a baptist church not far from where trayvon was shot.

meanwhile, a witness claiming he saw zimmerman. >> the guy at the bottom who had a red sweater on was yelling help, help. i told him to stop and i was calling police. >> reporter: police say zimmerman was wearing a red sweater and that he had suffered injuries. an iraqi woman found beaten in her san diego county home has now died. and police say she may be the victim of a hate crime. the family of 32-year-old says she was found dead. a note around the woman said it read, go back to your country.

family says they found a similar note earlier in the year. -- they say lasarino was armed with a handgun and threatening to kill them. police say he pulled out that gun and fired at officers one of whom returned fire. no one was hurt during the exchange. in pleasanton, residents are on alert after tire slashings. investigators say it appears to be a random act of sand -- vandalism, no arrests have been made. snow seemed to becon residents to come play. authorities are putting up roadblocks to the snowy fun. >> reporter: john warehem shows us the yellow tape blocking off road on mount hamilton. >> we had to ban any parking

and close the observatory when there's snow on the ground. >> reporter: whenever it snows here, cars of people come, they want to play. today they were turned around by yellow tape. >> i feel disappointed. >> reporter: when mount hamilton road is open it becomes dangerous because of the gridlock of cars that park illegally. there's never been heavy enforcement by authorities to stop it until now. the highway patrol and county sheriffs will be arresting people that park here. >> because the road was designed in the 1970s, it's very narrow and very winding. there's no places to pull off. we can't accommodate so many cars. >> because you're not supposed to park here. >> yeah, i know. but everybody is parking here so it's just for a couple of minutes. >> reporter: warehan sprung into action. >> the conservatory is closed.

there's no parking on the grounds. >> reporter: those who came to see the observatory are disappointed it was closed. >> i'm in a bit of a sham. but i guess safety has to be the priority. >> reporter: when there is no snow on the ground they'll be able to open that gate and let the public in. they'll be welcome to go on those free tours and the parking will be open. southern california got a good soaking today, a spring storm brought rain, wind and cold to the los angeles area all day with about an inch of rain expected by the end of the night. put that in perspective. l.a. gets 15-inches of rain all year. we want you to take a look at this right now. a basketball arena reduced to rubble in a matter of second. but it didn't quite go as planned. if at first you don't succeed. a frenchman makes another effort at scaling a building, what he had to change to keep authorities from stopping him.

there it goes, today was demolition day in florida. it was out with the old amway arena in orlando. it took just 15 seconds and 620 pounds of explosives to take down most of the 23-year-old structure. one man watching from two locks away was hit on the leg by a flying piece of metal. his injuries were minor. this morning a 7-year-old west virginia boy became the ninth fatality of a tragic house fire. the fire claimed the lives of a fire in a home in charleston, south carolina. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. it happened hours after the birthday party for the mother

of some of those children. there were no working smoke alarms in the home. president obama is in the korean peninsula where he delivered a message to korea. mr.obama is in south korea for a nuclear the summit. today he met with the south korean president. and mr. obama said today if he goes on with the planned launch, he will cancel aid. >> they need to understand that bad behavior won't be rewarded. >> president obama also visited troops. he told the troops there they are on freedom's frontier. it appears north korea is planning to move away with that

controversial launch. these are satellite images of possible launch sites. the north had moved the main body of a rocket to a new launching station in a village in north western north korea. thousands of people took to the streets to denounce racism and violence. the march follows the shooting of three children and a rabbi. the suspect was killed by police on thursday. his brother is now in custody accused of aiding bara. in chile, lots of shaking and frayed nerves when an earthquake shook the country. there were no reports, immediate reports of deaths or major damage. the quake was centered about 16 miles northwest of tulca, the city of more than 200 people. residents there said the

police are investigating a fatal accident that happened on lumbard street near van nuys avenue. initial reports indicate the person who was killed was a pedestrian. police are not releasing that person's age or any other information. no word on whether the driver involved has been cited. a new event record was set today. a san francisco man crossed the finish line in two hours, 28 minutes and nine seconds. matt keller was at the race and tells us it also benefited charity. >> reporter: the races started with a horn and ended with a limbo. chris mako. >> reporter: san francisco resident chris mocko won the race. organizers estimate three to

still worth celebrating. in oakland, matt keller, ktvu channel 2 news. you may have already noticed, gas prices are still going up, a new survey shows the national average for a gallon of regular jumped 11- cents over the past two weeks. as always, drivers in the bay area pay more in san francisco it's $4.40 a gallon. in oakland $4.31. a new study blames congestion for wasting 1.9 million-gallons of gas per year. the report comes as president obama pushes house republicans to pass a two year $109 million bill that would extend funding for transportation projects. the house is set to vote on a temporary extension tomorrow. recent stories about employers asking job seekers for their facebook pass words

have gained attention from senators. senator schumer are asking for a launch of an investigation. on friday, facebook threatened legal action against employers who request pass words during their job application processes. a nonprofit dedicated to preserving marin county state parks stepped forward. the two parks are among the 70 state parks slated to close july 1st because of the state's budget troubles. now the marin state parks has slated a plan. and that letter was approved by the superintendent and sent an to sacramento for approval. the securities and exchange commission says the bank agreed to produce a document under

a lot of people are headed back to the bay area after another snowy weekend in the sierra. this is what it looked where the flaking were falling for most of the day. >> they got snow, a lot of us got a break from the rain. but you're tracking more rain for the week. >> multiple rain clouds for tomorrow. if you want to get outside for tomorrow that's your day. right now in the maps on north tracker 2. the coverage rekraoezing re -- decreasing in the bay area.

they are reporting light snow in tahoe. our old storm is heading into southern california. right now you see rain being detectedded around santa clarita, los angeles. we still have lingering clouds. here is a look at some of the rainfall totals over the last two days. weekend totals very impressive amounts. san francisco, oakland, san rafael, santa rosa, napa all over an inch of rain over the past several days. santa fe at 8.75. the clouds breaking up by mid- to late afternoon. we had a few showers earlier today but all that activity shifting to the south and east. cool air remains in place. as a result the temperatures tomorrow morning low to mid- 30s. san francisco at 25 degrees. san jose right around 21. our old system continues to head to the south and east. our next one developing out to

the pacific. tomorrow though, increase in high clouds. then into tuesday, look what happens. this area of low pressure sets up shop to the west of mendecino. now with that we're going to generate moderate to heavy rainfall. especially in places to the north bay. that rain line spreads to the south on tuesday and still lingering showers as we head into wednesday. we'll be watching that especially north of the golden gate bridge adds we head into the tuesday forecast. first thing tomorrow morning, no rain drops to worry about. just a few extra high clouds by 7:00. those high clouds will continue to filter into the bay area into the afternoon hours. you will notice the rain showers beginning to approach to the north. there's the biggest perspective as we head into tuesday. it'll take its time to get to the south bay.
