a new day of searching for missing teenager sierra lamar and how authorities are looking hat a brand-new tactic in this case. good afternoon, everyone. i'm mike mibach. the search is intensifying for sierra lamar. ther is -- the sheriff's office is planning to search creeks and bodies of water. alex savidge is live with more.

>> reporter: well, the sheriff's office will be call out dive teams. in the meantime we're seeing a steady stream of volunteers checking in here. more than 150 people so far have checked in here today to help out on this search. members of this community clearly motivated to find sierra lamar, especially now that investigators have classified this as a kidnapping. checking for suspicious items in the brush, this group of volunteer searchers scoured a wooded area near anderson lake. >> sherry bullock from morgan hill says the disappearance of sierra lamar struck a nerve. years ago, her teenaged daughter went missing for four months. >> i would be up for nights crying. there was no search party. she was like a runaway. but i can only imagine what the mother is going through. >> reporter: lamarr went missing on march 16th. her cell phone and purse were

found by her house. now that investigators are calling this an abduction, volunteers have a new sense of urgency. >> the faster we found her, you know, the -- maybe the better the outcome. we can only hope and pray and miracles happen. >> reporter: the klasskidds foundation is coordinating this effort with hundreds of people chipping in trying to find this teenaged girl who investigators believe was taken against her will. >> i think it will motivate us. nowhere in our craziest dreams could we have imagined 600 people. >> reporter: and at about 2:00 this afternoon, the sheriff plans to send the dive teams. deputies will also be using a especially i had had trained k- 9 that can pick up scents on the water. in the meantime, the volunteer searches will continue every

day this week. back to you. >> thank you. you can now dry out the umbrella, at least for a couple of days. inches came in in the bay and more than 3 inches in the santa cruz mountains. mark tamayo says the next big rain could arrive on friday. he'll be along in a few minutes. he will tell us where it is likely to hit in the bay area and how much we might expect. and take a look at this home in fairfax in marin county. an oak tree came down around it around 7:00. the tree trapped three people inside. but firefighters did get to pull them out safely. this morning, building inspectors red tagged that house saying it's unsafe to occupy until the tree is removed. >> tree, landslide, anything like that. building officials and inspectors go out to make sure the home looks safe to occupy. >> he said he did give the owner permission to go inside

to get two cats in the back bedroom. overnight crews were busy removing a big tree that came coin in the oakland hills. it happened along shepherd canyon road around 10:30 last night. no one was hurt but lanes were blocked. crews brought in chainsaws and a wood chipper to remove the tree. the roadway was cleared by 1:00 this morning. the stormy weather is still causing flight delays at san francisco international airport. the airport duty manager says there are one-hour delays due to poor visibility. these pictures were taken early this morning during our 4:30 news cast. we caught a few travelers trying to catch up on some sleep. there were dozens of flights canceled at sfo. some people were stuck at the airport for more than four hours. oakland and san jose airports reported minimal delays. and you can always go to the website for the flight delays. just go to ktvu.com and click on the storm watch tab. well, it's day three of

some people are saying not so fast. christien kafton has more. >> reporter: a new protest has moved in and they are trying to get their mess ang to the may -- message up to the mayor about this project. organizers say the new project falls short to provide adequate healthcare across san francisco and won't provide as many jobs as promised. >> it does not account for changes in the virm, number -- in the environment, and the transportation issues. >> reporter: nurses and other union members were out near protesting. the mayor announced this new proposal to rebuild st. luke's hospital in the mission and a new pacific medical center on van ness. the mayor says the new hospitals will double the number of seismically safe hospital beds and says it will inject $2.5 billion into the san francisco economy through

construction and other community benefits everyone the mayor did acknowledge it took months of negotiations to secure this project. >> had some interesting challenges but ones we think we've mitigated with both traffic and housing impact and safe routes to and from the hospital and mitigation around the areas and the corridors. >> reporter: now the next step on this project will come from the mayor's office up there. the mayor will be intrope duesing the proposal to the board of supervisors the first week of april. the board of supervisors are expected to have a series of issues. back to you. >> thank you. the suspect in the san francisco mass killing will be in court at 1:30 this afternoon. luc is accused of killing five people all found dead inside a home on. investigators say they believe the family living -- on friday.

investigators say they believe the family living there knew luc. there are still critical questions unanswered. no word on a motive. also in san francisco, a bhom her 20s is being treated for gunshot wounds after she tried to drive herself to the hospital and was screaming for help on mission street. police say the woman was in a purple buick when she got into an argument with another woman and was shot by a man. some saw her on mission street, who were stunned, and she was yelling for help. >> she was shot in the left hand. >> police say her injuries are not life-threatening. they say a gang task force is investigating the shooting, but so far, there are no arrests and no suspect description. very sweet lady. she didn't have any children but she was very nurturing. >> a bay area neighborhood reacts to a tragedy.

fire crews will focus on building containment lines around a colorado wildfire. the fire has grown to seven square miles, destroyed dozens of homes and may have kill and elderly couple. people living in another 6,000 homes are on notice. fire crews say the biggest battle right now is the high winds and dry conditions. investigators believe the fire may have been sparked by a colorado forest service control burn meant to prevent wildfires. an elderly woman trapped inside aing -- inside a burning house died from her injuries. the fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m. on chestnut an 18th in her home. the -- and 18th in her home. the fire personnel rescued her. she later died at the hospital. the victim's caregiver lives just a couple of doors away and ran to unlock the front door

but the smoke was too thick to go inside. >> she was 92 years old. everybody on the block knew her. very nice lady. she said she had went to church the other day. she didn't have any children but she was very nurturing. >> fire officials say the fire began with a floor heater that was covered with something. there are new details in the trayvon martin shooting department. for days, the police department in florida claimed they did not have enough probable cause to arrest gary zimmerman. "the miami herald" is saying early in the investigation officers asked for an arrest warrant and even categorized the case as manslaughter. the state wanted further information before prosecuting. glide memorial church will hold a memorial service tonight

at 6:00 p.m. grief counselors will be at hayward middle school following the death of a 14-year-old student. this morning students arrived at school wearing blue to honor their classmate. he was an 8th grader and cesar chavez middle school. school officials say he was playing basketball in a p.e. class yesterday morning when he hit his head and suffered a seizure. the boy was transported to the hospital where he light -- later died. pope benedict xvi will meet with fidel castro as he wraps up his visit to cuba. earlier today, he held an open air mass in ha van non's plaza and delivered an unusually political message without naming the cuban government, the pope said it's wrong for a government to impose its truth on others. he then urged cuba to let the church preach more freely. when fidel castro took over, many priests were expelled and religious schools were closed. in the past hour, a judge

in oakland issued a tentative ruling in the pepper spray case. he indicated he will allow the uc regents to release their report on the incident but only if they cut out the names of the police officers in that report. the exception here is lieutenant john pike seen her pepper spraying occupy demonstrators as they sat peacefully on campus. the judge plans one more hearing today on the report and in any case will order it held until april 27th to give officers who want to block its police time to appeal. bay area transit officials are about to vote on a deal that would electrify caltrain tracks on the peninsula. the $1.5 billion project is part of a blended approach coordinating came's high speed rail system with existing rail services. caltrain says the plan would make the system more efficient, quieter and cleaner. today, the metropolitan transportation commission is considering whether to divert high speed rail fund towards

the project. we think it's the right thing to do. caltrain needs the improvements. they need the positive train control, a better signaling system and this is predominantly what that will do. the new caltrain project also would divert money from other agencies including b.a.r.t. and muni. some critics say that could delay big projects for those other bay area transit agencies. the san jose city council has ageed to prioritize certain projects -- agreed to pry or prize certain projects -- prioritize certain projects. a proposed change to walnut creek's liquor laws will not come up for discussion by the planning collision tonight. the law would have cracked down on businesses that serve liquor. bar and restaurant owners oppose the day m -- oppose the idea saying they can't be responsible for everyone who

drinks. the ordinance was scheduled to go before the planning commission tonight but that's been postponed because of a problem with notifying the public. it's been rescheduled for next month. well, yesterday at this time, we're tracking a band of moderate to heavy rain moving across the bay area. today, we get a break. as you can see, taking a live look outside, looking out towards san francisco bay, still some lingering clouds but the clouds are already beginning to lift as our storm exits the region. still producing snow out towards lake tahoe. a winter weather advisory just expired. chain controls are still on highway 50. here you can pick out our local radar. not a lot of coverage out there. there's still a chance of a few leftover sprinkles. as can you see, the main action focused in the santa cruz mountains. you can see the rain totals, santa rosa, nearly 1.50.

san francisco, over .50. and redwood city over 1. san jose .19. current numbers, it's mild out there for this wednesday afternoon. you can see the 50s and 60s showing up. santa rosa 58. livermore, 61. san jose right around 62. forecast headlines for today, a sun/cloud mix. showers will continue to move out. tomorrow will be dry and our next system moves in on saturday. that wi produce some showers, especially for saturday morning. here is the satellite and radar. you can see our system moving out of town to the south and east the -- and the east. the bigger perspective, there is another storm developing but most of the rainfall will be heading out to the north especially up to cape mendocino and up to the north. as i mentioned, the chance of a few sprinkles in the short term, a very light shower. as we take this into the evening hours. we'll thicken up the clouds. not much in the way of rainfall here and pretty much the same

deal for thursday. we'll go ahead and expand this. our next chance could be friday, especially up in the north bay. a few light showers developing, not much but the main center of our storm moves in early saturday morning between 4:00 and 5:00. for today, a sun/cloud mix and then into the evening partly cloudy skies. forecast highs this afternoon, it's pretty mild out there. warmest locations approaching the mid-60s for san jose, morgan hill and gilroy. and a look ahead to your five- day forecast. your weekend is always in view. tomorrow will be dry. there's that chance of a shower into your friday, primarily up in the north bay. we're not expecting much. showers likely for saturday. mostly for the morning hours. so mike appears the best day will be on sunday, we need the rainfall but we also need the breaks and that will be setting up later on today and into thursday. >> i know it's been a dry season but this month, i mean, march has been comparable to last year.
