airport, had a loaded gun in his luggage. now, this happened just 12 hours after a man who had explosives in his bag at the same philadelphia airport was taken into custody. that man was headed to the gate to board a flight going to san francisco. now, in the latest arrest, police say they are not sure police knew that handgun was in his bag. knew this morning -- new this morning, secretary of state hillary clinton is in saudi arabia to meet with king abdullah about the crisis in syria. this comes ahead of a gathering of 60 nations called the friends of the sirery yun -- syrian people. that meeting will be held in istanbul. mitt romney picked up another endorsement. it's the latest sign that the gop race might be winding down. but as alison burns reports, romney has yet to get the nod

her son was lost. i feel very badly about that. and -- i want in the end -- not -- not for her son's memory to be seen as how we degraded our system. >> now, his brother, george zimmerman, said he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed the unarmed teenager. in the meantime, spike lee reached a settlement with an elderly florida couple over a twitter that he -- message that he posted stemming from the trayvon martin case. the couple claimed they were getting death threats after spike lee listed their address as the home of george zimmerman. the couple has a son named william george zimmerman but the family is not related to the man who shot and killed trayvon martin. spike lee has apologized. the details of the settlement

who excelled in his military career. he was from vacaville and he died in southwest asia near a military base. his unit supported "operation enduring freedom" in afghanistan. he leaves behind a wife and two small children, ages 2 and 4. we're now learning new details about how osama bin laden spent nine years on the run after the september 11 attacks. according to "the new york times" bin laden's young wife has told pakistani leaders that during the years, osama bin laden moved among five safehouses and fathered five children. this raises the question of how he was able to move around five times without the knowledge of

we do have mostly cloudy skies, opinions. it's opinions -- partly sunny skies. today -- now. clouds will drift north. muggy, a lot of moisture in the air. saturday, rain and wind arrive. it will be clearer and cooling. late tuesday rain could make it to the north bay. it looks like wednesday the system will come in. it's slowing down and heading northbound. we'll end up under mostly sunny, partly cloudy skies. the system, though, is packing a lot of also moisture, the surf advisory will kick in saturday afternoon and the wind will pick up. watch how the clouds lift north. then by tonight we'll start to see the clouds thicken up.

pg&e crews are still busy working on downed power lines. tara moriarty has been out there all morning. this is where a suspected drunk driver knocked this out. what's going on now? >> reporter: this is going on five hours now that pg&e has

been working on this situation. you can see where the car slammed into the pole. right where you can see the bundle of cables there, they were touching the cars. so the driver could have easily been electrocuted. witnesses say the driver walked away without a scratch. police did arrest her on suspicion of dui after she failed a field sobriety test. pg&e cut off power while they were trying to fix the pole here two nearby businesses, including nick's restaurant. they were left without electricity. >> we're just gonna have to wait for the power to come back and let some people go without paying. >> reporter: the 24-hour, family restaurant was forced to close its doors. it looks like all of these

businesses are on the same transformer. we did just speak to pg&e and they did have to dig up the concrete here to get to the base of the pole. they are gonna have to go dig all of that up. so this project is gonna take a lot longer than expected. it will take all day. there's just one lane of washington avenue shut down here. you can see traffic not too bad. we've really been trying to get the word out. so a lot of folks using marina boulevard and hesperia instead. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, a high- speed pursuit through the east bay. speeds topped 100 miles an hour. el cerrito police chased after a car that failed to stop. the pursuit went to antioch and martinez. the officers were worried the driver would run into a driveway closure in pittsburg. but the car stopped.

police are looking for another suspect. it's unclear why they sped up in the first place. this was the scene near 4th street on jack london square. investigators say a confused driver took a wrong turn and ended up on the tracks and kept right on going. no one was hurt. a judge has set an april 18th date for sheriff ross mirkarimi's suspension hearing. the judge will hear the challenge from mayor lee. the sheriff avenue lawyer argues he should be reinstated since the domestic violence occurred a week before he was sworn in as sheriff. ktvu has exclusive new details on a possible motive in san francisco's mass murder case. 35-year-old binh thai luc is accused of killing five family members in the home near san

[no audio] well, this morning, the commerce department reported the biggest jump in consumer spending in seven months. americans dug deeper into their wallets and consumer spending jumped in february almost double what analysts had expected. higher energy costs, especially gas prices, are the big reason for that change. but the saves rate well as personal income was up just 2/10ths of a percentage. the makers of the blackberry will return to focus on business customers. apple and its main manufacturing partner in china says they will tackle

off and also be notified if somebody is breaking into your house. san francisco's financial district is hit when it considers a magic number. the san francisco business times reports the vacancy rate in the area has dropped to 9.7% in the first quarter of this year. that has pushed up rents. that's making developers as well as lenders feel more comfortable about starting a new development in the financial district. nearly every move you make on the internet is being tracked. but one search giant is promising to make a change. yahoo! says it will launch a do-not- track feature sometime this summer. users will be able to check a box if they don't want to be tracked. one anlift says that could change the way companies do business, but they will still collect the information about the gender, age and location.

this is moving north away from us. we're still getting some of the backwash in the clouds. so that will keep partly cloudy skies in. 50s on the temperatures and temperatures along with the humidity. i think you will notice the upper 60s to 70. but a little low is forming in that system. our cloud and rain forecast, watch how the clouds lift out of the air -- lift out of the area. by tonight, that system starts to move south. so by tomorrow morning, yes, there will be some rain moving into the north bay. i think it will take a while before it sweeps into the east bay and also the south bay. maybe even early afternoon. rainfall projections starting to stack up. about an inch plus for the north bay and also the santa cruz mountains. these are probably underdone. i think the system will have more. mild and warm today.

bryant and harrison. early their morning, police sources tell us, the victim in this case was potentially a utility worker and we did see a pg&e truck parked near. according to the pg&e spokesman, he says the man found dead was not one of their employees. homicide investigators spent the morning out here searching this neighborhood trying to search with neighborhoods. they did speak with several homeless people camped out on main street. i talked with others from the condo complex as well. so far police have not given us many details on this investigation. we're continuing to work to get some sort of an update from the san francisco police and obviously we'll bring that to you as we geet more information -- as we get more information during the day. san francisco police also investigating another shooting. this one in the mission district. it happened about 1:00 this morning near 24th and cap

welcome back. 8:29. a suspected drunk driver crashed into a utility pole and knocked it down hours ago. but there's still problems out there with those power lines. ktvu's tara moriarty has been out there since 4:30 this morning. you are back out there now to tell us what still needs to be done. tara? >> reporter: well, pg&e crews will be here for a while. if you take a look right there where all of the wires are coming out, that's a whole where the pole snapped off into the ground. it's about five feet under. crews are gonna have to bust up the concrete. it's a process that will take them all day. the silver contact car slammed into the pole off washington avenue and snagged power lines around 2:30. witnesses say the driver walked away without a scratch. now, cables containing live wires were touching her cars. so official says she easily could have been electrocuted.

today comcast is launching smart home service in the bay area. it will begin to offer security and home monitoring offices. the system will allow the customer to launch the thermostat and it will let them know if somebody is in their home. the financial district in san francisco has hit what it calls a magic number. the vacancy rate in the area has dropped to 9.7% during the first quarter of this year and that's pushed up rents. that's making developers and lenders feeling more comfortable about starting new development in the financial district. almost every move you make on the internet is being -- is being tracked. yahoo! says they will launch a do-not- track feature on its website sometime this summer which means you will be able to check a box that tells websites you don't want to be tracked. one legal analyst says that could change the way companies

nuclear power plant but beginning this sunday, japan will partially open two nearby towns. and a third city will reopen next month. that means 16,000 evacuees can return home. however, a 12-mile perimeter around the nuclear power plant is still contaminated and it will be off limits. it was a close call for three firefighters in michigan. the men were on the roof of a cleaning business in dearborn yesterday. they were trying to ventilate this burning building when suddenly, look at that, there it goes, the roof gives way. you can see how quickly they react. one going to the other. the other one pulling the two still on the roof to safety. the firefighters were able, as you can see, to get off that collapsing section and were not hurt. the cause of the fire, still under investigation. well, authorities in santa cruz county are sounding the alarm over illegal marijuana grows and a possible fire
