university. these are live pictures from newschopper2 that we've been showing you for the last 40 minutes. at this point, the gunman is on the loose and tara moriarty is live on the scene. tara, what's happening there now? >> reporter: well, i just got a text from one of my police sources and they tell us that we have more than six victims hee, possibly more than six victims. we have one person confirmed dead. we know two people shot in the head. if we pan off here, we can give you a perspective, they pushed all of our media back. this is an active scene. they are still looking for the shooter. we're on the corner of roland and edgewater. down there, where you can see the fire engine and the cop car, that street there, that's where a lot of the efforts are being focused. when we were there -- there was

a cop car there and he told us to get out of there because they were actively looking for the shooter. it was a very bloody, chaotic scene. we saw a lot of people coming out on stretchers. let's take a listen to the sound. [dogs barking] >> reporter: all right. we had one gentleman, he was shot and he was walking. he was bloody and put into am an plans and -- into an ambulance. there was a another individual, with a bullet hole there. he was also taken to the hospital. this all unfolded at the 10:30 hour had morning. we're told the man is ash shan, heavy-set. they believe he's around the building here. this is a korean vocational school, and from what we understand the shooting

happened inside one of the classrooms that. it's on edgewatt, near the toyota dealership. they came in with their guns, we have fire, police, officers with rifles. they are all sort of pushing, running around with their guns trying to find out exactly where this suspect is located. now, i wassable to get -- i was able to get close to the scene earlier. there was a bol. she was sitting down crying with someone trying to console her. there was a police officer right there. there was a map. and he was asking where are the exits? and she was trying to let him know the lay of the land so they could strategize and find we know there are -- find him. we know there are six victim we'll stone continue to stay on

top of it -- continue to stay on top of this. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> tara, how far back did they push back? >> reporter: well, there were a couple of news vans there. they pushed us back -- i don't know how long exactly. i'm kind of bad with distances. but you can see the stop sign. that's how far they pushed this back and put up the crime tape. we believe the gunman was actually located behind this white building. if we can pan in there. it says 7800 and there is an arrow pointed to the left. that's the building or at least next to the building at least in question here. they've blocked off that entire street there, that part of roland. so officers very edgy over there saying, we can't let you in. we believe this is an active scene. it's very dangerous. we've not caught the fi -- the

guy yet. back to you. >> no word about who this gunman is? whether he's a student or not? >> reporter: we have no idea. some of the students i noticed appear to be in their 20, 0s. have no idea how old the suspect is. all we know he's a heavy-set asian male wearing khaki pants. no word if he was working at the university, if he was a student there, if he was visiting. we have no idea the type of security they have. law enforcement has no -- this is a business park. a lot of these buildings are just enormous. they take up an entire city block. you can see the foliage. there is a lot of trees and bushes that the suspect can hide. >> i know you are gonna be staying on the scene keeping us updated. again, we're looking at pictures from ktvu newschopper, a couple of scenes now.

there was an armored car there. as we pan around, you can see clusters of police officers at the corner of this building at oikos university on edgewater drive, just making sure the gunman doesn't sneak out. but it's a rather -- extremely large building. and you can imagine all sorts of places where the gunman could be hiding. we want to go to ktvu's matt keller who is also on the scene. as you can see, there's more ambulances lined up there. what can you tells from your location? >> reporter: we are here at roland and edgewater and they moved us back, the police officers did, about 50 yards away because they came out saying it's still an active scene. the building has not been cleared. there's obviously concern about where he is. when arrived, there were guns drawn, and a perimeter was set up at oikos university at edgewater and roland.

a person we saw was pulled out by police officer and the body was laid down into the street. we did not see that person move after that. a woman was also put out at 11:30 and put into an ambulance and take ton a hospital. 11:40 we saw a line of people pulled from the building and in a very urgent matter, they ran down the street away from the oikos university building there. and then about five, ten minutes after that, that's when the police officers came up to us at roland and edge water and said they did not want us to see the front. building. they were concerned about the shooter inside. the billing had not been cleared. we did -- the building had not been cleared. we did talk to one of the witnesses who came out with a gunshot in her arm. she explained what happened about the shooter coming in, shooting people inside, coming out. she was taken away by an ambulance as well. we've been giving the description all morning long, a

heavy-set asian man wearing khaki clothing. that's the description we've been given by the police. it's hard to see from our angle what's going on at oikos university. we've been moved back because of the urgency that they say that there is still a shooter inside and they've not cleared that building. reporting live from oakland, matt keller, ktvu channel 2 news. >> matt, i'm just wondering -- the witness you spoke to, did she mention whether it was a -- do we still have matt on the flown? >> reporter: yes, i'm still here. >> i'm just curious if the witness could tell if the shootings were random or if this gunman targeted his victims? >> reporter: well, again, this is coming from witnesses on the scene who actually spoke with this woman who ran out. they told us what was going on according to her inside that building. they said they knew the student came in and started talking to -- we do have a p.i.o. here -- excuse me. can we talk with you for a

information from the p.i.o., the public information officer. she's just giving a microphone check to see if everyone can hear her about this deadly shooting that happened just about a half-hour ago at oikos university near the airport in oakland. we do understand there were -- her than six people were shot. one person has been -- more than six people were shot. one person has been killed. rita williams, live on the scene, said she saw at least nine ambulances outside of the university. one thing we want to emphasize, this is still an active scene. right now the -- apparently, the gunman is still on the loose and they've been moving the reporters away from the building obviously as a measure of precaution. they certainly don't want anybody to be hurt. one of our reporters as we wait -- let's join tara moriarty with new information. tara?

>> reporter: yeah. i just spoke to one of my police sources and this person indicated there were five people dead as a result of this shooting. their bodies are actually laying, they indicated to me, in the center divide. they are covered with a tarp right now. that's the latest we know. five people dead. we're gonna listen to jana watt son, she's a public -- wattson, she's a public information officer from the oakland police department. she will confirm how many people we have dead. our sources say five people dead. more than six people shot at this point. >> okay. thank you. ktvu's tara moriarty with the breaking news, five people dead lying in the median covered with a tarp. that's certainly startling new information because before we heard one person was dead and six people injured and now we're hearing five people dead and possibly up to six people injured on top of that. again, we've seen multiple

ambulances there on the scene, a gunman apparently still on the loose. we don't know where he is. police are gonna be searching the area including the building there in the center of the screen. and now we want to go to jade hernandez who is live at highland hospital where we believe some of the injured have been brought for treatment. jade? >> reporter: tori. that's right. we're -- tori, that's right. we're at highland hospital. we've seen victims being brought in by ambulances. the first victim is a 19-year- old woman and student at oikos university -- >> we cannot confirm the number of families at this time. we have victims who have suffered from gunshot wounds. i cannot confirm the numbers at this time. we have core denned off the area -- cordenned off the area. we've set up a perimeter for public safety. that area right now, we have

medical personnel. we have our officers as well as as our s.w.a.t. team has arrived. they are still evacuating any possible injured students from this college. this is still an active and fluid situation. i will update you as events unfold. i cannot confirm that we've arrested anyone in regards to this shooting today. >> is the gunman inside? >> it's unknown right now. our s.w.a.t. team is conducting investigations. our priority is evacuation -- investigations. our priority is evacuations. that's a priority. and then we'll conduct an interior sweep of the building. it's unknown if he is still unside or fled. >> any idea what this might be over? >> it's unknown at this time. i know officers are talking to

witnesses trying to gather as much information. again, this is a very tense situation for everyone. at the same time, we do have s.w.a.t -- our officers are on scene. we have secured the area. our priority right now is to take care of the injured make sure they receive medical attention and also locate the person responsible for this. >> do they know the shooter? >> that's unknown at this time. we are interviewing the witnesses right now trying to determine if this person is known to them. it's still very early on. again, right now our priority is to take care of the injured and make sure the area is secure for everyone. >> is it likely he's still in the area? >> it is likely. we do not have the shooter. the shooter is still at large. that's one of the priorities that we're looking at. we want to make sure that the shooter -- we catch him as soon as possible. if anyone has any information,

contact the oakland police department. any information would be very helpful. >> you were listen live to jana watson, giving us a little bit of information about the situation, not confirming how many are dead or injured but we do have reports that five people are dead and about six injured at the moment. we want to go back to ktvu's jade hernandez who is at highland hospital where some of those injured are being treated. jade? >> reporter: as officer watson mentioned, this is a chaotic situation. so we're just trying to figure out how many victims were brought to highland hospital. we can show you -- we've seen at least two victims brought in by ambulance the past half- hour. the first, 19 years old, a student at the university. we know this because i spoke to the woman's mother and sister, both were extremely upset. they tried parking at the entrance of the e.r., following

in their wounded convict and sister. they were told --er and sister. they were -- daughter and sister. they were told she was shot in the arm. when i saw paramedics wheeling her in. she was talking. the family was headed inside the hospital to get more information. they did not know how many other victims would be brought here to the hospital. i do know that the 19-year-old school has been at the acupuncture school for a year and a half. we do have a photojournalist monitoring the e.r. entrance right now. we believe we have two victims brought here to highland, possibly three. we'll continue to monitor the situation here at highland hospital and bring you the latest. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, jade. and once again, we want to just summarize what the oakland

police officer -- information officer told us, they've core denned off the area -- cordoned off the area, the s.w.a.t. team is there. they are prioritizing by evacuating anyone inside. taking care of the injured and locating the gunman. at this point, it's unknown whether he's inside the building or if he fled the scene before police arrived. but they believe it's likely he's still in the area. it's still a very tense situation and they want to try to find this person and bring him into custody. they've released a description of their suspect, an asian male, heavy build with khaki pants, located in the 700 block of edgewater drive. you can see the map where it's located. not far from hegenberger and doolittle. very close to the oakland airport. this shooting happened at oikos university at 7550 edgewater in

oakland. the website said it's an independent institution set up to provide the highest level of education with an emphasis on christian. it's unknown how many students attend the university. we understand it has a korean affiliation and a religious affiliation as well. no word when it opened up either. again, these are pictures from the scene. this is videotape from earlier. you can see a police dog on the scene obviously looking for some clues and one of the victims on the cell phone being put into an ambulance. jade hernandez a moment ago talked to us from highland hospital where she said there were about two or three injured brought to the scene. some of the injured seem okay. they were able to walk out on their own. they possibly got shot in the arm or the hand.

but again, there was reports of at least two people shot in the lead -- in the head. one confirmed dead and we do have -- we have a police source that says up to five people have been killed by this gunman. we don't know any mowive for this. it happened -- motive for this. it happened in a classroom. there was a lot of bloody victims that were scene walking around, and, again, no word if the gunman is a student. once again, we want to join our reporter on the scene to tell us some more information. kara? >> reporter: good afternoon. we just finished up with a briefing with the oakland police public information officer the i want to take you to the scene. i want to take you to the scene. that is because it's still an active scene and search for this gunman. i asked them if they had any idea this gunman knew his victims. that's unknown. they are interviewing victims and witnesses right now.

also, they are telling us right now their priority is tending to the victim. they don't know how many folks have been hurt, how many folks have been killed. but very much the effort is looking for the shooter. there's quite a few streets blocked off. the search is going on. they are trying to get this gunman to get him in custody. back to you. >> and kara, can you give us a chance of the atmosphere there. we see officers behind you. it doesn't look like they are in a very tense situation. does it seem like it's a little more relaxed when you got there in. >> reporter: it is more relaxed than when we got here. we were pushed back probably 30, 40 yards for our safety because there was -- there is still an ongoing search for the shooter. but i also talked to some of the folks who go to the coosh -- who go to the school.

some -- one man sitting in his darr, a cow employee -- in his car, a city employee. pop, pop. they said it sounded like windows were being shot out. nerves are very frayed out here. >> i am sure. the building, it's quite large so the police would have to do a pretty extensive search inside if the gunman is in there. is that why correct -- is that correct this. >> reporter: yes. right now we can't see most of it because of where we've been pushed back to. but learncy we saw an armored car and police officers with the gun. >> we understand the s.w.a.t. team is there. >> reporter: we have seen the s.w.a.t.

team at the perimeter. we don't want to give their location in case the gunman has access to news reports. >> okay. first day for kara. welcome to ktvu. certainly a very, very busy news day. if you are just joining us we're getting more information that continues to come in as we show you some video from earlier of a deadly shooting at an oakland university this morning at about 10:30 this morning. we did get reports right away that there was a shooting on -- at oikos university. apparently, at least one confirmed dead. sources tell us possibly five dead at this point. and several more injured, including two being treated at highland hospital. at this point, the police are still saying that they are searching for the gunman. there have been some sorts coming in that a suspect has been arrested at the ross parking lot in the shopping

center in alameda right now. but we're still working to get information on that. again, the priority for police is to evacuate the building of oikos university and taking care of the injured and confirming the location of the gam. he's been described as an asian male, heavy build. no word if he is a student or any motive behind the shooting. but he apparently walked into at least one classroom and opened fire this morning. you -- you can see from these pictures from earlier, an enormous presence reaction from police and fire. numerous crews, suvs, ambulances on the scene. we saw helicopter flying overhead. these are live pictures right now.

yes. and we -- we are just getting word that there is -- there are reports that the suspect in this shooting is now in custody. although that's still not been coilfulled -- confirmed, possibly happening in alameda. these are live pictures from oakland near the shooting site where you can see the police officer on the scene, taking notes, obviously work hard to get to the bottom of this situation. quite a scene. apparently the suspect has been arrested. you can, again, see -- it looks like someone is looking inside trying to talk to someone inside that of that vehicle. we, again evacuation quite a few -- about four -- we have quite a few -- about four reporters on the scene. so we're getting the information from them or from

the police officers. we heard from jana watson, the p.i.o. officer, who gave us information. this is near doolittle and hegenberger. not far from the oakland airport. oakland hayes have confirmed that they have do the suspect in custody. let's listen live. >> we believe he's responsible for the shooting. >> did he match the description? >> unfortunately, we just missed a very brief comment from jana watson, but she did confirm that there is a suspect -- a suspect has been arrested at a shopping center in alameda right now but she did not give any confirmation about whether this person matched the description of the suspect which we had earlier from oakland police department. an asian male with khaki

clothing. no word on any motive or any information about this suspect, who this western is, whether he was a suspect. it's, again, to emphasize this was a very large building as we can see from our live pictures earlier that it would have been a -- there was concern for people still inside the building. we did hear earlier that the priority war the police was to evacuate people. we did see people jumping into an armored vehicle with the police for safetiness. we did hear from highland hospital. jade hernandez was there and said -- confirmed two of the injured were brought to that location. and she talked to the mother and daughter of one of the

victims, a 19-year-old student at oikos was shot in the arm but was conscious when she was wheeled into the ambulance and appeared to be okay. we did hear reports of two people shot in the head. we did get confirmation from police, one person was dead. our sources tell us five people may be killed. they were in a median in the street with tarps over them. and we did hear two people have been shot -- shot in the head. you are looking at live pictures of -- crews are leaving the scene. not sure if the suspect is in that cruiser or not. but we do have confirmation now that the suspect in this shooting at oikos university university, so at this point, in the immediate area of oikos university, there is completely a decrease in the tension, now that -- now that they have been

-- now that they have a person -- no word on what led police to the location. we will continue to try to get more information on that. in the meantime, we need to go back to tara moriarty back outside oikos university.

>> the sheriff avenue department will be arriving shortly. the mood here seems to be a lot more relaxed. before they were really pushing us back. they were very much on edge telling us we were sort of in the line of fire, very agitated. it seems to have quelled. so understandable now that we've learned that the suspect has been caught, still no information about who this person is, if he is a student or a teacher or if he knew his victims. don't know that at this point. i'm sure this information will be trickling down throughout the day. let's take a listen to the sound of one of the victims being wheeled out. >> my sister is in there. ! she just got shot!

>> reporter: so this man was basically saying that his sister had called him and said i've been shot, come to oikos university. he came and he was very distraught because he said his sister just finished a tour of duty. she was in the army -- just in the army. and just shot. from what our sources have indicated there are at least five people who are dead and they are lying underneath a tarp on the median outside of the university. i don't know if you can hear the helicopters above us. this is a very chaotic scene. but things definitely have calmed down since they have announced the suspect has been detained. we'll try to
