inside a korean church tonight. the first of seven funerals is held for innocent victims of a gunman's rage. good evening, i'm julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville. she is the youngest victim of monday's mass murder. a nursing student from north korea was remembered tonight. we gathered photos of six of the seven victims. all were immigrants looking for a better life here, working, or

taking classes at oikos university. new at 10:00, patty lee, live in hayward, where several hundred people attended tonight's private funeral service. >> reporter: the pastor here told me just a few minutes ago, he told me about 500 people were here. this service ended about 20 minutes ago. but you can see several hundred people are still here. this is the backdoor to the main office. and greeting the family and friends here, and handed individual flowers which is traditional. this is a close knit church and this is a close night community of korean americans. lydia's death is a loss felt by all of the families here. ♪ [ music ] this slide show reveals photos of lydia as a baby. surrounded by parents and a younger brother, who tonight are shattered by their loss. >> just sitting on the chair,

they were crying. they're praying now for lydia. >> reporter: before the service started at 8:00, florists carried wreaths into the church, where lydia worshiped and socialized. friends say she also taught sunday school in this room for six years to kids who adored her. >> very patient, she loved kids. she was great with kids. >> reporter: friends say she planned to be a pediatrician, but first planned to work as a nurse. she chose the program at oikos university, because it seemed like a natural fit. friends were focused on helping their eldest daughter achieve their goals. >> we are immigrants from south korea. we have a hope. we have a dream. we wanted to raise our children in here as well.

the dream is gone. >> reporter: oikos university administrator is also here tonight. i had a chance to speak to her about 15 minutes ago. she told me because the school is under investigation, she couldn't talk in detail about the school, the shooting, or about lydia tonight. the service is essentially a funeral service, because lydia will be buried tomorrow afternoon in los altos. for many people it will be difficult to forget the horror was that unleashed. he says that he found it especially sad that the shootings happened at a school where people were learning to care for hours. >> i'm trying to be a little more appreciative of my life. and appreciate the people who help me, and realize how much they're sacrificing to help me. >> reporter: snow says he was

close enough to actually see the victim's faces, the blood on their clothes and the stillness of those who did not survive. in ten minutes, the story of sonam choedon. at 10:30, a mother of three killed just 10 months before graduation. doriss an attorney in nigeria before coming here and starting over. the suspected gunman appeared in court for the first time. alameda district attorney is charging one goh with seven counts of murder. all of that makes him eligible for the death penalty. in court this afternoon, the suspect spoke just one word. ktvu's christian captain was in the courtroom, and he was also inside the santa rita jail for a look at the actual cell where

goh was being held. >> reporter: confined to this jail cell, 23 hours a day. with deputies checking on him every 15 minutes. >> he would take his meals inside of the cell, so everything would be done inside of the cell, except for that one hour, when he's out, again, unless he's going to court that day. >> reporter: a judge read one by one, the seven counts of murder, and three counts of attempted murder, prosecutors are pursuing. the murder charges carry special circumstances. first, prosecutors are focusing on a series of preliminary hearings. >> it is at that point in time, the decision whether or not we will seek death in this case will be made. >> reporter: shackled, wearing a red jail uniform, goh did not enter a plea in court today. he spent most of his appearance looking down, reading while the judge read the charges against him, only answering yes, if she

asked if one goh was his name. officers are still looking for the of the area, we did recover canvas of surrounding areas. if there's any more clues. >> reporter: goh was due in court to enter a plea april 30. dive teams returned to the waters of the oakland he is chair today to search for a gun used in the mass killings. so far, they've been unable to find it. deputies showed us the sonar equipment they're using. the water is very murky, as you can see from our underwater camera. because of the poor visibility, divers have had to search using their sense of touch. they call that blackwater diving. officials say they're not giving up, and plan to continue searching for the weapon. the nursing director of oikos university says she thinks she may have been the

gunman's target. ellen said one goh was very angry that the school wouldn't refund his tuition when he dropped out last fall. he said he was looking for a female administrator when he wept to the school on monday, but servian wasn't there. the killings at oikos university have drawn the attention. in danger of losing its accreditation and has nothing to do with the shootings. only 41% of its graduates passed the entrant exam last year. stay with ktvu and ktvu.com for continuing coverage of this case. we're working to bring you the latest developments. the man accused of killing five people in a san francisco home last month is set to be arraigned tomorrow. binh thai luc is expected to answer to multiple murder charges in the death of three women, and two men at a home on

health street. luc made his first court appearance last week, but did not enter a plea because of a dispute over who would represent him. now to the race for the white house. today republican presidential front runner mitt romney was sounding as if he is beginning to see the finish line. romney appeared upbeat after winning three primaries last night, he spoke before washington before a group of newspaper editors. >> i hope that we're able to resolve our nomination process, as soon as possible of course, because i would like to focus our time and attention on those key battle ground states, and raising the funds to be somewhat competitive with the president. >> reporter: romney won last night in wisconsin, maryland, and the district of columbia. the associated press delegate count shows romney with 658 delegates. that's more than half the

amount needed to achieve the nomination. looking down the road to the big primary in texas set for the end of may. >> there's a movement to make texas a winner take all state. you throw those 154 delegates on our palette, and all of a sudden this becomes a very different race. >> santorum believes he will win the next primary in his home state of pennsylvania. the tenth day of the strike. tonight, it turned noisy. ktvu's john sasaki is live now in the city, where he managed to get the two sides to agree to one thing. john. >> reporter: julie, these union workers have a long night ahead of them, they'll be out here until morning in cold, blustery conditions trying to get their message across to cpnc. some 100 picketers took over

the intersection of webster and cray in san francisco. demanding better wages from california pacific medical center. >> i've been working here for 33 years. this is the first time cpnc has forced me to walk the streets. >> reporter: they say they've been without a contract for 14 months. >> they've done their best to distract us, to hurt us. we're not asking for much. we know times are tough, but a fair livable wage is all we're asking. >> reporter: they're engineers who maintain generators, refrigerators, even medical equipment. >> we'd made an offer, which we feel is fairly generous in this economy. >> we hope the members will tell their labor leaders they want to return to the bargaining table. >> reporter: as is often the case, each side doesn't match

what the others are saying. >> negotiate a fair contract with these workers. >> reporter: they are separated by wage increases just 1%, and agreed to us to start negotiating again. >> we're absolutely willing to go back to the table. >> we're always willing to go back to the bargaining table. >> reporter: this is the overnight crew of picketers. they just told me many others will be back tomorrow morning. john sasaki, ktvu, channel 2 news. tomorrow, the santa clara county sheriff's department plans to resume its search for missing teenager sierra lamar. officials tell us, they'll be focusing on areas farther from other home in gilroy and san martin. they won't say why those areas are being singled out. plans call for about 20 members of the search and rescue team to be looking for any possible evidence or crime scene. and they'll be using dogs as well. yahoo drops the axe.

new at 10:00, one of the victims of the oikos shooting was a young woman who had deep ties to her community. friends and family remember her. >> reporter: we're in front of the tibeten association here in richmond. friends told us the nursing student would often volunteer here. they say she would have been here tonight. every wednesday night, tibeten's gather at this community center to celebrate their culture. those attending, told us they have a heavy heart, as they remember the 33-year-old of el serrito. >> a nursing student myself, hearing that she was in the nursing program, it's, i think it's a big tragic loss. >> reporter: nursing was a

perfect fit. they told us, she was not driven by making money, but the desire to give back. >> she had so much compassion in her. >> reporter: community members told us they're thoughts are with the victims and their families and they have forgiven the suspect. >> whatever he did it was something that he must be in trouble for. >> our community has lost somebody in our family. i think it's a big loss for us, and hopefully, we'll be able to move on. >> reporter: friends told us, the nursing student came here from india about two years ago. they say she was only two months from graduating as a licensed vocational nurse. amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> and at 10:30, a heartbroken husband speaks out about the loss of his wife and the children the nursing student

leaves behind. new information tonight, san jose police say brian rathjen admitted to the hit and runs. san francisco officials say an elderly man hit by a bicyclist last week has died. police say the 71-year-old was hit last thursday morning, while crossing market street at castro. teachers and students resumed classes today. the school in downtown oakland trains people for yobs in the med -- jobs in the medical marijuana field.

growth. major layoffs were announced today at yahoo. why analysts think some of those laid off workers will actually come out ahead in the long run. >> reporter: workers at yahoo faced an unknown future. the ceo announced yahoo is laying off 2,000 people. tech analyst, rob enderly says it's too little too late. and more layoffs will have to happen. >> it's like pulling off a band aid. you can pull it off fast or do it slow and agonizing. they're doing it slow and agonizing. >> reporter: albin engineering is placing workers at companies like apple and ciscoe. he hasn't seen a job market like this since the tech boom. >> right now in the silicone

valley, it's starting to turn into the late '90s frenzy again. >> reporter: brian potter has seen this frenzy first hand, he was unemployed for several months last year, now he's an architecture for a satellite company. that hasn't stopped the phone calls. >> i've been getting contacts from all kinds of people, probably three or four a day for services. >> reporter: analysts say the people who still have jobs at yahoo could be targeted by other tech companies as they try to find more stable job situations. in sunnyvale, ktvu, channel 2 news. more details now. on wall street, yahoo is one of the few stocks that traded higher today. an afternoon surge pushed the stock into positive territory for a gain of 9 cents. the broader market suffered its worst losses in a month. nasdaq dropped 45. the european debt crisis flared

cloud raked across the city of lancaster. lancaster's mayor said it damaged about 300 buildings. >> all of a sudden it sounded like a train was coming, and i was on the track. i guess i was in the way. this loud noise. >> thousands of people in the dallas area are still without power tonight. hundreds are staying in shelters. there were no reports though, of any deaths from any of those tornadoes. the pentagon said today its ready to resume a military trial of the five men accused in the september 11 attacks. khalid sheikh mohammed said he was the mastermind. five other -- four other men are being tried. they're expected to be arraigned next month at guantanamo bay. san jose police are issuing a community alert tonight.

they say someone is posing as a police officer and stopping people. lloyd lacuesta is live in san jose with a description of the impersonator, and who he's targeting. >> reporter: report of no fake stops tonight, but the latest incident happened at this foot bridge yesterday evening. a man walked up to a pedestrian, flashed a badge, patted him down and asked for his wallet. when the wallet was returned, the cash inside was gone. this has happened three times already. at hellier avenue in paradise drive, and arroyo park at the intersection of king and mckey roads, and at the foot bridge of sunset and stow avenues. in all occasions, the victims were spanish speaking immigrants. the fake cop said he was undercover. >> someone came up and showed you a badge and asked you for your wallet, what would you do? >> i would say why? >> reporter: the imposter cop is described as asian.

also checking on the legality of higher price classes. governor brown appears confident about his million tax diminishtive. he stopped collecting signatures to put that on the ballot. brown is satisfied he has enough signatures already. the governor has teamed up with the california federation of teachers on a compromised measure to raise taxes on the state's highest earners. you may not have won last week's mega millions lottery, but you can take heart that you helped california schools, even if only a little bit. a percentage goes to benefit state schools. those who did the math say in california, it amounts to just under $9 per student. a spokesperson says lottery money contributes for less than 2% of the education budget. a huge new development plan was announced today for an area that the san francisco giants own. it's right next to at&t park. >> reporter: as fans filed into

at&t park for an exhibition game against the oakland a's, the san francisco giants layed out what they called a grand slam to unveil a new neighborhood next to the park. >> after a lot of study, and doing our home work to make sure this is something that could fit into the character of the city. >> reporter: a 27-acre development. just south of the park. the giants organization owns the rights to develop this land, and proposes using private funding to build the park, 1,000 housing units, and office and retail space. >> permanent jobs on this site when they're fully built out. >> reporter: the city hopes to rake in about $13 million yearly. the proposal comes as some of the giants neighbors are already struggling financially. >> there are more store front vacancies than we would like to see. but we think it's a period of

home game. the project will include new seats to replace many of the benches. a new concourse and concession stands, plus seismic improvements. a newly approved zoning plan in the east bay city of pittsburg could bring a homeland shelter to the downtown area. when we first brought you the story in january, some business owners were upset the rules might allow a 25 bed shelter downtown. the city is required by law to identify places where homeless shelters have a right to open and several other areas are included. the city also says there are no current plans for a shelter to open. san jose's "american idol," deandre felt the pressure early tonight. he was the first of the eight finalists to sing on the show. it was '80s night and the judge's raved about his performance. a couple other singers got even more praise, and a few missed the mark with the judges.

a trial date has been set for accused killer joseph naso. he was accused of killing four women, he chose to act as his own attorney during the trial. they intend to seek the death penalty if he is found guilty. the final autopsy report for whitney houston is in tonight. houston was found faced down in a bath tub with cocaine in her system, and drug paraphernalia on the bathroom counter nearby. it also says the bath water was extremely hot. the report paints a picture of

the singer's final hours. it says she complained of a sore throat and an assistant suggested she take a bath before an awards gala. they returned to find houston asleep in the bath. the fake certification is valued altasan. packets were shipped to the u.s. from secondary distributers. they're advising doctors to stop using it. new studies tonight suggest a link between genetic mutations and autism. through studies identified mutations in specific jeans. the mutations increase the chance of being autistic. fathers are more likely than mothers to pass on the mutation. researchers also say there is

evidence the increasing age of a father may increase the likelihood of autism. three american soldiers were killed in a relatively peaceful area of a northern province today. a suicide bomber on a motorcycle set off the explosives as the troops were trafficking in a park. seven others, including afghan police also died. the taliban claimed possibility for the attack. in kenya, a rockslide has left at least for people dead. hundreds of people tried to clear the rocks and find anyone who may have been trapped. the red cross said large rocks rolled downhill after heavy rains overnight. some 40 of the small homes were also damaged. in the middle east, israeli security forces evicted dozens of jewish forces. this was in spite of efforts to block the eviction. it is the traditional burial site of abraham and the only place on the west bank where jews live in the heart of a

we have new video into the ktvu newsroom. this is a market in oakland that was badly damaged when it was hit by a van. it happened about 8:30 tonight.

a van ran into the black and white lure store at east 26th. first the van hit another car head on, then went through a fence and into the store. police say the driver and two other people ran away. a building inspector red tagged the market, because the structural supports are damaged. and it needs now to be shored up. at this point, the van is not being moved until the van can be stabilized. police say the tower seems to be leaning a bit toward yorba island. >> reporter: from treasure island, it sure looks like the tower is tilting of so slightly towards yorba buena island. it is pulled by a massive cable system. >> there are 10 cables running straight up to that tower. >> reporter: the lean essential right now.

strongest bridge on the planet earth. ktvu, channel 2 news. the head of the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission is set to visit the aling power plant on friday. that plant has been offline tore two months after a break in a piece of tubing. investigators say the tube is wearing out sooner than expected, but they aren't sure exactly why. they warn if there is a heat wave, there could be black outs in the area. in brazil, a prosecutor filed a second $11 billion lawsuit against chevron corporation after word of another leak in an offshore oil field. it is said to be near the sight where more than 110,000 gallons of oil leaked last year. a chevron spokesperson says the lawsuits are outrageous and without merit. a brazilian judge has to decide if the cases will move forward. burger king has pulled a

okay, that's the start of the international auto show in new york city. it's actually the first street legal flying car. the wings fold out for flight, and up when the car is on the road. manufacturers say it has a top land speed of about 80 miles an hour, an air speed of about 100 miles an hour, and a price tag of about $300,000. >> not good for maneuvering

the giants seem to be doing a little daydreaming about their opener on friday. the a's take them to task. johnny gomez, how many times are we going to say it? the pride of casa grande. tees off. third baseman josh donald son had a 3 run shot, a 2 run shot. and four hits. getting down to the opening day roster. hector sanchez makes the team as the only buster posey backup. brett pill is a backup first and third baseman. brandon belt is the starting first baseman. chris stewart traded to the yankees. belt takes a deep breath knowing he's going to get a full shot at it this year.
