thursday, april 5th. i'm dave clark. >> i'm pam cook. let's check with dave and the weather. >> there's a lot of temperatures near freezing. the wind will probably help a little so not only the wind machine but mother nature giving us breezes. it's cold, a lot of 30s under clear skies but we'll have partly cloudy skies later on. the possibility of showers to the north and east, highs today upper 50s, very low 60s. good morning, traffic on highway 4 getting more crowded especially in antioch. the traffic is going to be busy as you drive on westbound 24 to the tunnel. let's go back to the desk. there's new information in the oikos university university massacre. tara moriarty is at the school this morning as police make a surprising announcement regarding the intended target. tara? >> reporter: oakwood police chief howard jordan put out an

urgent alert last night informing us the intended target is not the person everybody thinks it is. that female administrator wasn't even here when the massacre unfolded. you can see a memorial of flowers and candles continuing to pile up. this is a facebook picture of ellen, the nursing program director at oik joyce. initially this is the person police say the former student was after but turns out it's a different administrator not named because she fears for her safety. a friend of the nurse said she had a confrontation with goe over his tuition after he dropped out of school in the fall. she declined to comment about the case. >> very much in shock. she was very, very close to her students. and her secretary katherine was like a daughter to her. it's devastating. >> reporter: meanwhile the 43-year-old suspect made his first court appearance

yesterday but cameras weren't allowed. police say he went on a deadly shooting rampage killing seven people, injuring three monday morning. he spent money of his court appearance looking down, reading while the judge read the murder charges against him, only softly answering yes when she asked his name. he's in a cell in santa rita jail. confined with deputies checking on him every 15 minutes. because of this special circumstance surrounding this multiple murder case he's eligible for the death penalty. live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. time 6:03. we're still learning intimate details about the people shot and killed at oikos. this is a video of six of the seven people who lost their lives in that mass shooting. police say all of them were immigrants hoping an education would give them a better life. today 21-year-old lydia sim right here will be laid to rest

in los altos. a vigil was held by family and friends to remember her. this memorial service was held at the church in hayward hey sim worshiped as well as worked. she dreamed of becoming a pediatrician to continue to work with children. it's hard enough to hear about the tragedies but trying to live through one, even harder. >> i have to see -- do i have to understand them? do i have to forget them? it's really hard. >> miss sim is the first victim from the shooting to be laid to rest. in the wake of the shooting the oakland as will hold an overnight tailgate event called "making oakland better." it starts at 7:00 tonight. it will last until 7:00 tomorrow night. just before game time. it will be held at the corner of 66th avenue and coliseum

way. this morning police are investigating an attack and beating at the bart station. they say a man was beaten by three people as the commute was winding down. they are trying to determine if it was random or if the man was targeted. three suspects ran off into a nearby residential area but police hope surveillance video will help identify them. ktvu us a claudine wong is coffering this story. 6:04. a desperate search will resume in hopes of missing sierra lamar. missing morgan hill teen. why will this morning's search take place south of her home? lorraine has more. >> reporter: sheriffs' deputies continue their search today south of here in gilroy and san martin. you can see in morgan hill flyers are up still encouraging the public to keep an eye out. this is video of the last time volunteers searched sunday.

today about 20 members of the santa clara county sheriff search and rescue unit will be looking for any sign of sierra lamar. they will bring three human remain detection canines to help in the search. the 15-year-old has been missing 20 days now. more than 6, 000 personnel hours have been dedicated to the case including local and federal law enforcement. the teen's parents are finding hope and getting help from a young woman who was once a kidnap victim herself. >> the best thing was hearing marlene tell me i was able to give her hope. if i can do that then i'll be here everyday if i have to. >> reporter: authorities believe lamar was abducted. so far they found a cell phone and handbag with clothes that belong to the morgan hill girl. the search will start this morning at 9:00 a.m. and go through 5:30 this evening. if you have any information or tips they encourage you to call 24/7 the santa clara county sheriff's department. reporting live in morgan hill, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2

news. republican presidential candidate ron paul is here in the bay area today. at 11:30 this morning the texas congressman will speak at a campaign fundraiser at the marriott on sutter street near union square and san francisco. then at 7:00 tonight ron paul holds a town hall at uc berkeley's buck auditorium. his libertarian position such as his support for legalizing marijuana and anti-war stance made him popular with young voters. a federal judge in texas is demanding a letter from the obama administration recognizing the federal court's authority to strike down laws passed by congress. all this after president obama said earlier this week that he hoped the supreme court would not take the "unprecedented step of overturning his health care reform law." coming up at 6:15. the response from the obama administration to the judge's demand. 6:07. overnight news -- new earthquakes here in the bay area. there were four small quakes

just north of morgan hill according to the usgs. the first one just after 1:00 a.m., magnitudes range from 2.8 to 1.3. we've not heard of damage yet. meantime, there were two tiny earthquakes near berkeley after 2:40 this morning. they measured 1.8 and 1.7. if you felt any of those quakes we want to hear about it. log on to our ktvu morning news facebook page. tell us about it. 6:08. let's check with sal to get the commute. >> right now it's doing pretty well. hopefully we'll have a pretty good day today around the bay area. let's take a look at the pictures, i-880 still looking pretty good with no major problems. the commute is looking nice as you drive up to downtown oakland, 580 also looks good. the morning drive is getting a little more crowded at the toll plaza, five-minute wait. the lights should come on soon

at 34, tells you not far away there's very cold readings. it's a cold morning across the board. yesterday, highs in the low 60s. today upper 50s. san francisco is only 54 yesterday. they may actually warm up a degree or two today. just due to a little more of a breeze. high clouds or partly cloudy skies toward lake county, napa county, solano, contra costa possible later today. otherwise sunny, cool and breezy. winds out of the west or out of the northwest, 50s to very low 60s. the low 60s in the green. the 50s, even some upper 40s to 50s in some of the higher elevations the farther north you go. with that low it will deepen, dip south a little today. then eject out tomorrow so today, into probably late tonight, the possibility toward napa. one forecast model puts a little rain on us throughout tonight. i think it's a little push but you can't ignore it. by tomorrow it's gone. but tomorrow morning is going to be just as cold.

involving accused child molester jerry sandusky. he went to court for the first dismissed. the 68-year-old former penn state football coach has been confined to on $250,000 occupy eviction. they say they don't have the time or manpower to meet the april 25th deadline to investigate the many complaints stemming from the raid outside city hall on october 25th. police also will likely miss the 180-day deadline to issue a report on the big occupy protest one week later. this potentially could place the police department one step closer to a federal takeover. time now 6:14. this is deadline day for the obama administration to file the paperwork with a federal

judge explaining a speech the president made this week. the speech and controversy center on the health care reform case that is before the u.s. supreme court. scott has more. >> reporter: the federal judge from texas says the obama administration must split submit a three-page explanation single spaced. he objected to words the president gave in a speech monday in which he said this. >> ultimately i'm confident that the supreme court will not take what would be an unprecedented extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected congress. >> reporter: the judge indicated mr. obama questioned the authority of the federal court system. the republican activists called the president's statement during that question and answer session a form of intimidation.

the u.s. attorney general indicated the administration will respond appropriately to the judge's request and said mr. obama's words were appropriate. live in washington, scott mcfarland, ktvu channel 2 news. 6:16. later today president obama will sign legislation designed to help small businesses and start-ups grow and create jobs. it's called the jumpstart our business start-ups act. this would allow companies to raise money by selling securities to the public. supporters say this will help start-up companies which often have trouble getting bank loans. however, critics say it could make investors susceptible to get rich quick scams. a government analysis is raising new questions about the loan to freemont solar company sew listeneddra -- solydra. it was found they were not consulted until the last minute. they had a day to review it. the treasury department told the white house it needed to be

involved earlier in the process to ensure there would be no problems. solyndra announced it would file for bankruptcy protection last august. learning new details about the final moments of whitney houston's life. a final autopsy report reveals that houston was found face down in an overflowing bathtub at the beverly hills hotel. she had cocaine in her system and drug paraphernalia on a counter nearby. the report also says the 48-year-old had complained of a sore throat and that an assistant suggested that she take a bath before a pregramy awards gala. by the time her body was discovered she had likely been dead for an hour. time now 6:17. aetna insurance said it made a mistake when it sent out thousands of letters in california. the letters told customers their doctors were no longer covered by the aetna network and patients would either have to find new doctors or pay more for health care.

the company now says it's sending out retraction letters. in the meantime customers with questions should call the customer service phone number right there on the aetna id cards. some surprising new information about the food you eat. food safety experts say there's ammonia in many of our foods. not just in beef. last month fast food chains as well as supermarkets stopped serving beef that was treated with ammonia after critics labeled it "pink slime." that compound was approved in 1974 for food consumption. you can even find it in cheese, baked goods and chocolate products. however, food companies insist they are using that compound a lot less these days. sugary drinks could go up in price as the state tries to fight childhood obesity. a new poll released today by the contra costa health department show voters agree obesity in children is a serious issue. it also shows nearly 2/3 of people would support a special

fee on drinks that contain a lot of sugar. doctors say the average child has about two sugary drinks a day. this equals 150,000 empty calories a year. time now 6:19. sal is back. you're watching everything. i know you're also talking about how the wind is affecting our commute as well. >> it's breezy out there now on the san mateo bridge, it's breezy. i've been looking at chp, they have not issued wind advisories and talking to steve as well. he says it's going to be breezy, just be careful. it's clear though. you can see pretty well. the plains will not -- the planes will not be delayed at the airports today. highway 4 traffic looks pretty good, eastbound highway 4 near mcune though there's a car that went off the road. so watch for some activity in contra costa county on highway 4 near mcewen road. bart is on time according to dispatchers. moving to the bay bridge toll

plaza, we're getting a crowd. no problems getting on to the bridge. in santa clara valley, looks good. i want to check out the peninsula as well. highway 101, san mateo, redwood city heading to palo alto and into santa clara county looks pretty good. it's chilly out there, cold for some. temperatures 30s for many along the embarcadero, if you're heading to the ferry building o, or work near there, 40 degrees and rather brisk and breezy to windy. so it's cool across the board. upper lake and lake county 25. lakeport 27. closer to home in napa, many reports of 32. wind machines in the vineyards are roaring this morning. palo alto, alamo, lots of upper 30s all over the place. 34 santa rosa and napa. livermore 39. if not for the breeze it would be even cooler.

good morning. right now traffic is moving along ok but we're seeing some slowing on 237 as you cross 880 in santa clara county. we'll let you know more about the commute there and the rest of the bay area. a young man is being hailed a hero for his response to a suspected drunk driving crash in san jose. our ktvu news was the first on the scene yesterday morning.

investigators say a woman smashed her car into a home on melrose avenue causing a leak and brake evaluation. he found her slumped over the wheel moments after the crash. he broke the car window with a rock, turned the ignition off and called for help. time now 6:26. san jose police also warning the community about a criminal out there posing as a police officer. he stopped at least three people. this fake cop has a badge, a police radio and says he's working undercover. he's described as asian, 30 years old, 5'7", about 170 pounds. in one incident the suspect walked up to a man, flashed a badge, patted him down and asked for the man's wallet. when he gave the wallet back the cash was gone. >> we can't have people walking around pretending to be police and robbing people of their

money. if it fits the description be very cautious and try to summon somebody's attention and call 911 if you have a phone. >> that suspect was seen driving away in a green mini van. the san diego-based group that released a wildly popular kony 2012 video is supposed to release a sequel today, "kony 2012, part 2" after the first one went viral. it again calls on young people to plaster posters of kony all over the world on april 20th. the investigation into an attack at the colma bart station. what police hope will help them identify the three suspects. she thought she was the gunman's intended target but the police chief says it was someone else. surprising new information about the shooting at oikos. >> the opening bell is about to ring. we'll take you there live. a lot of familiar names to

where classes are still cancelled. tara? >> reporter: overnight police issued an alert indicating the person that everyone thought was the intended target is not. flowers and candles continue to pile up at the vigil here. initially this is the person police said former student one gd goe was after but turns out it was a female administrator not named because she fears for her safety. she said she had an argument with goe after he dropped out in the fall over his tuition. >> she's devastated. absolutely devastated. not eating, sleeping, crying. she cried all night last night. she's not doing very well right now.

ben luke will be arraigned at 9:00 a.m. for charges he killed five people last month in a house near san francisco city college. he made his first court appearance aloft week but did -- last week but didn't enter a plea. there was a dispute over who would represent him in court. now a private defense attorney has been appointed to his case. right now police are investigating the attack and beating of a 23-year-old man at the colma bart station. channel 2 reporter claudine wong is at the scene where she got reaction from passengers about this attack. >> reporter: certainly passengers just learned about what happened out here. the first officer on scene last night when this happened told me the victim was found here on the ground when he got here. 23-year-old white man bleeding and badly beaten up. this was before 7:00 last night. this place was actually pretty busy. this is a very well lit area. there's a surveillance camera just right there, next to the area. and the ticket agent sits just

feet away. the ticket agent actually called police when this happened. what is still unclear, what if anything led up to it. i had a chance to talk to a police officer, he couldn't do an on-camera interview but said he and his partner came here two minutes after the call came in, first on scene and found the victim bleeding. the suspects already took off and he says the victim couldn't say much because he was apparently in pretty bad shape. colma police department and fire also responded to the scene. bart police handling the investigation now because it happened on bart property. we talked to a 19-year-old man -- 91-year-old man who hadn't heard about the attack but says he's always aware of safety. >> definitely. definitely. i don't go out at nighttime period. >> reporter: questions this morning remain, was it a random attack? a robbery? or a target? bart police department told me this morning the victim had stitches but his injuries were not life threatening. they will talk to him.

as for the suspects, you are looking in the direction of where they ran. they took off in that direction, they say, which goes into a residential area and off into busy camino de real. there's a description but bart police haven't released it yet. they hope witnesses come forward and they will look at the surveillance video as this investigation continues. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 6:36. let's check on the commute. sal? >> we're doing ok. as a matter of fact, we have some slow traffic but it is just kind of beginning to be slow now. starting with pictures here. traffic is going to see -- to be ok here on 237. it's getting a little slower as you drive towards anchor but not quite slow yet. bay bridge toll plaza is backed up for about a 10-minute wait. once you're past the metering lights it's a decent drive. maybe a little breezy on the

county and maybe contra costa later today. one piece of energy is rotating around. the days are getting a little longer, angle of sun higher so it's a very dynamic system. you lift it, start to get cloud cover and the possibility, all it needs is a little trigger in the atmosphere. it might happen later today but it's cold for this time of year. 20s in several areas. los gatos 34. woodside is in there, palo alto, danville, all upper 30s. 38 san rafael and hayward. that is at the hayward airport, 40, that is cold. temperatures today will only be in the upper 50s. it doesn't look like much now but we're going to get cloud build-up over the hills. winds out of the west or northwest, not that strong but any puff of a breeze and a 34-degree temp and it's a good wind chill. after this goes through tonight, tomorrow looks much

quieter but our rainfall projection map does show a little in nap naacpa and concord later today. i think after tonight everything else clears out but tomorrow morning, just as cold for those of you on a need to know basis on that. breezy, cool, sunny for a while then clouds develop. possible showers in the afternoon. upper 50s to very low 60s. that will cover the spread. these are well below average temperatures. tomorrow morning, cold, saturday looks good. most of sunday should be fine, increasing clouds on monday. >> thank you. happening right now -- airport security workers are just starting to protest outside san francisco international airport. we are live outside, a number of them carrying the signs, walking the picket line this morning. they are upset about some budget cuts which could potentially lead to a reduction in staffing there. about 40 to 50 screeners are expected to take part in the picket today. the tsa checkpoints, we understand, should still be operational during the protest.

so hopefully it's not going to affect the security lines. we are going to continue to monitor the situation at the airport. we're out there live, we're going to bring you more details as they develop and try to talk to an airport spokesman to see if this is affecting any flights. time now 6:40. picket lines are also up this morning outside of a large san francisco hospital. this is day 11 of a public labor dispute at california pacific medical center. engineers who take care of generators, refrigerators and medical equipment claim they've worked without a contract for 18 months. they say they want to be paid the same as engineers at other sutter hospitals. one thing both sides do agree on, a wage increase of 1% is all that separates them. today san francisco's planning commission will consider the proposal to build a 555-bed hospital at the site of the old cathedral hill hotel. they also want to rebuild

st. luke's hospital in the mission district. under a deal supported by the mayor the medical center would make improvements to transit and pedestrian safety and also invest in community clinics. if the planning commission gives the ok the deal still has to be approved by the board of supervisors. you're familiar with the leaning tower of pisa? in the bay area not the leaning tower of pisa but no question it's leaning we'll tell you why. >> we're live in morgan hill. the search for a missing teen, sierra lamar resumes today. how far south are they going to look for her? >> good morning. if you're driving in morerin county traffic looks good to the golden gate bridge. another update straight ahead.

people, police are hoping surveillance video will help identify those suspects. we are live right outside san francisco international airport. live pictures in the middle of this picket line. airport security workers just getting started in the protest. they are angry about some budget cuts which they say could possibly lead to staff reductions. just a few hours the santa clara county sheriff's office will resume its search for a missing morgan hill teen. lorraine blanco joins us to tell us this morning's search will take place south of her home. lorraine? >> reporter: the search for the missing teen will go as far as 15 miles south. from this intersection here in morgan hill, sheriffs' deputies and three canines will head to san martin and gilroy today. last time volunteers searched the area sunday they found clothing that didn't turn out to be hers. today about 20 members of the santa clara county search and
