news. investigators were back out tonight searching for sierra lamar who hasn't been seen in two weeks. these pictures show them combing through a new area and this map that we have shows where the search is forked. just south of morgan hill. ktvu's robert handa is live with why investigators are looking there now. robert? >> reporter: part of the new territory being examined today in the search for the missing teenager. >> reporter: today's search for sierra lamar by the sheriff's department is using a familiar approach in unfamiliar territory. >> looking for anything that looks like it would be interesting. just looking for things out of place. >> reporter: search and rescue teams began rolling in this

the justice department upheld the rights of the court. president obama touched off the debate by reffing to the supreme court as unelected judges. >> i am confident they will not take an step of over turning a law that was passed by a strong majority of congress. >> those comments angered a federal judge in texas who is hearing a challenge to the law and he demanded a response from the justice department. today they sent the judge a letter reefirming the court's durability review law and the white house did damage repair. >> he believed that because of the overwhelming precedent here in this case the supreme court

will uphold the constitutionality. >> in his letter he said his department has never asked a court to reconsider or limit its power of judicial review. they are expected to rule on the law in three months. reports out of saudi arabia say the nation will not send female athletes to the olympics in london. if it did it would be the first time they sent female athletes to the olympic games. they did leave open room to compete on their own outside the official delegation but it is not clear if that will satisfy demands. the governors of california and nevada said they plan to work together on an effort to bring the winter olympics back to lake tahoe.

sergeant out here, we have a couple officers keeping watch on this particular trash can here. next to the bus stop. the intersection of edge water and they got reports this afternoon from a caller, a citizen reporting a gun of some kind in this trash can. police secured the scene. they have not seen the gun yet. they are waiting for crime scene technicians and then they will open up the trash been and look inside at the bottom of the trash can see if they find a gun. the officers tell me they have not seen a weapon but they have reports of a gun in the trash can. >> how close is this to the area where they were searching in the water and is it on the path that the killer could have take on the way to the shopping

center? >> reporter: that is part of what is the thinking. it is close. just a matter of a couple blocks of the shooting scene at oikos university. whether there is a connection, police aren't saying. as far as the direct path, on the south side, so if you were leaving oikos university, you would have to make a u-turn oo get to -- to get to where the trash can is. it is, i suppose up for debate. on the opposite side of the street. [ talking at the same time ] >> how long is -- is there an estimate as to how lang the investigators get through -- long the investigators get there? >> reporter: i don't have an estimate. they are making sure no one does anything to the trash can

now. >> reporter: families are struggling to carry on without their loves ones. and now we put a face, 7 faces on the tragedy. >> reporter: the memorial grows as does the disbelief. how could such a peaceful place be a scene of such violence. immigrants, the children of immigrants and grief stretches now around the world. at 53 the oldest victim and other of two, she worked as a tax analysts but was about to realize her dream of becoming a nurse. she was the mother of three girls, the step-mother of a teen. a lawyer before immigrating. she was also a nursing student. her husband says he will take

her home to nigia for a burial. he came from india and now will return there. worked all night clean that san francisco airport. >> really liked the kids. went to school to decomnurse -- become nurse. >> reporter: she wanted to become a nurse. 21 the youngest victim. she came from korea. a graduate of football high school, she worked as a waitress. 33-year-old, she grew up in india. she only came here two years ago to study nursing but already made a big impact

complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. . >> the man accused of slaughtering five people in san francisco was in court today and we heard him respond to the charges he is facing and the bail was set and the amount is huge. ktvu's david stevenson was in court today but joins us today from outside the hemp where the killings killings hap -- home where the killings happened. >> reporter: today the man who was accused of the killings

entered pleas in his case. >> not guilty. >> reporter: it took 15 minutes for business loop -- binh tai luc to respond. he was brought to court in handcuffs, charged with the killings of five people. cameras were not allowed to show his face. >> do you admit -- >> deny. the charges carry special circumstances, making him eligible for the death penalty. prosecutors worked with the defense to set bail, $25 million. it is one of the largest they have heard of in san francisco. prosecutors agreed agreed.

accident in great detail and praises his helmet for saving his life. he says i really hope he ends up okay and i really hope he makes it. and says the lesson is to wysh, where your helmet. police are still investigating. >> they will look at the circumstance of the accident, the scene, the dynamics, speeds, distance, everything that would be involved in an accident investigation. >> the district attorney is considering whether to file charnels against him. >> back now to breaking news. we have live pictures from news copper 2. that trash can in the center of the picture, someone reported seeing a gun inside that trash can. the reason this is significant, that is a couple blocks from oikos university where 7 people were killed earlier this week.
