just showed up. eric? >> reporter: this is the trash can where everybody is focused. police say they are waiting on a city crew to unlock this portion so they can get into it and establish if there is a gun here. members of the oakland police department and this man is a crime scene technician ready to document whatever they find. they are waiting waiting to move forward on this. they have to unlock this trash can. it is important to consider the time line. police said the gun was spotted, maybe as early as 5:30 a.m. this morning by a caller but the caller didn't report it till 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. police are securing the trash can, waiting to see if there is a gun down there.

the reason it is significant, as we show you pictures with chopper 2, how close we are to oikos university. down edgewater drive, that is walking distance away from the school where the shooting happened on monday. 7 people killed. three more injured. after that shooting, we were told it was a .45 caliber hand gun. along with assistance from the sheriff's office, the police department conducted a search here in oakland, long the route -- along the route one goh ko traveled. there was suspicion he could have dumped it in the water. they took a long time to look for the gun. before the break in the case, possible break today happened, i talked to police and they

90 minutes ago the coast guard was called to ocean beach to rescue a stranded swimmer. we caught this video of the rescue. he got stuck on the rocks near the cliff house restaurant. he was put into a ambulance by firefighters so he could be evaluated. the search for sierra lamar expanded today. ktvu's robert handa is live to tell us about the challenges in the new search. robert? >> reporter: julie, here you get an idea of the nature of the search. trying to walk a small section, they encounter tall grass and uneven terrain. this afternoon they got much needed help. >> reporter: search and rescue teams and search dogs began

spreading out into new territory today to find sierra lamar. the 15-year-old disappeared march 16. investigators believe she was abducted. till today they folked around the home and fields where her fields and purse were found. now the search is expanding south with search dogs trying to find her trail. >> she is a trailing dug but she also -- dog but she also specializes in remains and water. >> reporter: water ways and creek beds were the targets today long with a number of large parcels of property. search teams were mobile today, sometimes topping to look under a board near the side of a road. >> covering areas. making sure people looked in their yards and we are putting our eyes on it for a second or third time. the sheriff's department

jose. we have new details on a story we followed yesterday of a car crashing into a san jose house and rupturing a gas line. we showed you this video yesterday. today authorities called him a hero after he rushed to the scene and pulled the driver out of the vehicle. she was hospitalized and then booked on driving under the influence. the san francisco planning commission gave a green light to a new hospital redevelopment plan. >> leaders held a rally today, they want them to approve the plan to redevelopment its four campuses and it includes a new hospital. mayor ed lee says it will create 1500 jobs in construction alone.
