welcome to mornings on 2! >> it is friday, april 6th. right now, fremont police remain at the scene of a homicide. it happened around 11:00 last night. ktvu's allie rasmus was the first reporter on the scene at 4:30 this morning and joins us live with what police and neighbors are saying. >> reporter: we just got an update from fremont police. they told us about the victim of this fatal shooting. he's a 20-year-old resident of fremont, and it was around 11:00 last nights when neighbors reported hearing gunfire. several shots ringing out in front of that apartment building behind us. you see it's a pretty residential area, there's some people walking out of that apartment complex this morning. investigators have been here since 11:00 last night. the victim of that gunshot wound was -- passed away at the hospital. this is central avenue between joseph and several neighbors have come up to us to tell us what they saw and heard before the shooting. one neighbor heard what sounded

like an argument between several people outside the apartment, followed by several gunshots. police are still looking for a suspect or suspects involved. the victim was from fremont but did not live in the apartment building where he was shot. >> we're pretty early in the investigation so there's a lot of things we'll be looking at. one will be motive, why he was here, what happened, immediately before the shooting, whether or not it's gang-related, and that's something that we'll have later on. >> reporter: investigators are still here at the scene talking to some of the residents, talking to potential hours after the shooting happened. and central avenue between duster bury and joseph is still shut to traffic. there's crime scene tape set up blocking the entire intersection, and we have seen some police officers have to turn around and turn away some of the vehicles trying to get through on this main thoroughfare. this intersection is probably going to be shut down for the

next couple hours, as the investigation continues. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. also in fremont, an overnight fire is being investigated. it started at 1:45 this morning inside the a cafe at a strip mall on thornton avenue. firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen. the restaurant was closed at the time, and no firefighters were hurt. it took about 30 minutes to put the fire out. no other businesses at the strip mall were affected. for the first time in three days, students from oikos university in oakland went back to the school last night. a shooting rampage on monday that left seven people dead forced the school to close. now we've also learned that police escorted those students into the school last night so they could retrieve any belongings they left behind after the shooting. however, the school itself remains closed. and just a half mile away from the university, police

carefully sifted through every piece of trash from a garbage can. this happened yesterday at a bus stop. the police responded to the area after someone called and said they saw a gun in that trash can. however, no gun was found. all week long, police have been trying to recover the gun used in the oikos university massacre. make sure you stay right here with ktvu mornings on 2. coming up at 7:30, tara moriarity will be back with more on the investigation, including the name of the intended target. it's 7:04. a sexual assault suspect is now in custody in a case involving attacks on at least three girls in oakland. police arrested 20-year-old binge yang this week. an alert citizen stopped an attack in progress and stopped the suspect from escaping. he is accused of sexually attacking the girls near oakland fruitvale avenue.

police did not say when the attacks occurred. the founder of oakster dam university plans to give up ownership of the school. los angeles times reports richard lee made that decision after this week's raid on oakster dam. mornings on 2 was first to report that raid on monday morning. federal agents seized nearly everything inside the business in downtown oakland, including pot plants, bank account records, and computers. oakster dam university remains open although its classes have been scaled back. it's america's first marijuana trade school. police in palo alto using social media to try to battle a recent crime wave. using facebook, twitter and other sites to interact with residents, including this map you're looking at showing locations of recent home burglaries. palo alto saw a steady rise in residential burglaries from 2010 to 2011, and they received

a report of 71 so far this year. the map you're looking at is updated every week. as we speak, hundreds of protestors are holding demonstrations right outside the main gate of the livermore lab. these are live pictures, one of the speakers standing in front of a microphone right there. and there's a car and other activity behind them. now, this protest involves religious and anti-nuclear groups getting a wider prosecutor now, individual there, every year on this day good friday. they're demanding the u.s. stop developing and storing nuclear weapons. the demonstrators say the disaster in japan pointed out the problems with any kind of nuclear development. several new options are now under consideration to stop erosion at san francisco's ocean beach. the chronicle reports the army corps of engineers is considering pumping sand to the hardest hit zones at the beach

fairfield, san jose near there, upper 30s. also on the peninsula. frost advisory until 8:00 for the north bay. once we hit about 8:00, temperatures will bounce up fast. the nights are just not that long. so for temperatures to make it this cold, this time of year, really is impressive. and for mendocino coming up, a hard freeze warning. lot of 20s and also into lake county. the end result is after these cold readings in the morning we will have sunshine and warmer weather today. yesterday lot of 50s. san francisco only 52. and seems cool to me but there's some 30s in san francisco now. and all in the upper 30s. we'll have temperatates 50s and low to mid-60s today. right there. thunderstorms towards tracy and stockton yesterday, all that is gone. but cold air in place. that will get modified here today and then also into tomorrow. so lots of sun. it will be warmer. sunday a little tricky, i think north bay will get some cloud cover but overall sunday should be fine. but then sunday night into monday we'll cloud up and looks like rain returns early next week.

who notion if he'll strike again. >> it's a white man, 25 years old, 5-foot 10 inches tall, wearing a dark blue jacket with white stripes on the sleeves. an experienced skydiver is dead after a parachute malfunction. the victim's first parachute opened but malfunctioned and his backup parachute didn't open. the man landed in a vineyard. he is not identified but friends say the man is around 70 years old and was an experienced skydiver had had jumped thousands of times. the federal aviation administration is investigating. time is 7:11. the government's new job numbers from march just came out about 90 minutes ago. even though the numbers are positive, we'll tell you why many are disappointed. and there's a hole connection to the nearly million dollar government agency boondoggle in las vegas. and how much is your commute cost? we're now finding out the cost

mostly clear can cold. blossom hill frost on the rooftops. a frost advisory in the north bay until 8 but sunny today and warmer. upper 50s, low to mid-50s. the labor department's report on the march unemployment rate is both good and bad news. the unemployment rate fell slightly to 8.2%. as more people dropped out the labor market and stopped looking for jobs. most experts had expected the unemployment rate to hold steady at 8.3. they had also forecast the economy would add at least 200,000 jobs last month. instead, only 120,000 now jobs

were created. there's no reaction in the stock market today since it's closed for good friday. a federal worker from california reportedly is at the center of a government spending scandal. ktvu's scott mcfarland reports this morning's washington post is saying a man named jeffrey neely planned a party that was paid for by taxpayers in a very expensive resort. scott. >> reporter: that man was head of all california federal buildings, according to that report in the washington post. there are now two congress al committees investigating this lavish party at the general services administration. the gsa. first the video just released from the u.s. house oversight committee, one of those two committees, just released this video which shows the awards ceremony that took part -- at the end of the 2010 party. that shindig at the gsa cost $800,000 at the posh resort in

vegas, sushi, commemorative cowlings, a clown, a mind reader. the u.s. house transportation committee, other committee investigating, tells us it will stage an investigative hearing into the party april 19th. >> there were policies and procedures that were not followed and things happened on a scale that makes it pretty shocking that no one in the chain of command said, wait a minute, this is out of control. >> we're told president obama was briefed on the details of the investigation into this party from the internal auditors at the gsa, the head that agency, the head of that agency which oversees thousands of workers and all federal buildings nationwide was forced out earlier this week. scott mcfarland, ktvu channel 2 news. defense secretary leon panetta has a very expensive commute, to and from his house in the monterey area. he has flown on military planes to his home, more than two dozen times since last july, at a cost of $32,000 each.

the government says secretary panetta is required to pay about $630 for every round-trip flight. he has to fly on military jets for security reasons. a military board is recommending that a southern california marine who criticized president obama on facebook be dismissed from the military. sergeant gary stein called president obama a coward and the enemy on his facebook page. the pentagon rules limit the political activities of u.s. service members. but stein's lawyers say he was expressing his personal views and exercising his first amendment rights. the board's recommendations will now go to a general. it is 7:17. republican presidential candidate ron paul received a hero's welcome in an appearance at uc berkeley. >> we do not have the facilities, the moral authority, nor the constitutional authority to go around the world and tell other people what they must do and how to run their country!

system for paying for classes. the system would charge students more tuition to take more popular classes. it's only in the planning stages now, and a spokesman for california community colleges says they're seeking advice from the attorney general's office about whether or not the plan is even legal. the san francisco planning commission gave preliminary approval to a new hospital redevelopment plan. labor and civic leaders held this rally outside the commission meeting yesterday, supporting california pacific medical center's plan to redevelop its four campuses. supporters say the project will create 1500 construction jobs. the planning commission voted to begin the review process. and a federal judge approved a 25 billion-dollar mortgage settlement with five of the largest u.s. banks. the five banks include wells fargo, bank of america, ally, j.p. morgan chase and citigroup. they're going to pay $5 billion

in cash to federal and state governments for foreclosure abuses and misconduct in servicing home loans. the additional $20 billion will include cuts to mortgage debt amounts and also restructuring of some troubled loans. lawyers for the man accused of fatally shooting a florida teenager says newly enhanced audio of a 911 call proves george zimmerman did not use a racial slur. lawyers say that's zimmerman saying, "punks "after an expletive before he shot trayvon martin in february, it was thought he may have used a racial slur. zimmerman was patrolling as a neighborhood watch volunteer and says martin attacked him so he shot the teenager in self- defense. the secretary d.a. is criticize ode for locking up a teenage victim of an alleged rape. prosecutors say they locked up

on some rocks at lands end in san francisco. some diner as the live house noticed him and notified authorities. rescue crews used a long board to bring the boy back to shore. he was taken to the hospital but is not seriously injured which is quite fortunate. >> you can tell that was not an easy rescue. time is 7:23. sal is back. he says we have a pretty easy commute so far this morning. >> yes, it's good friday. some financial people have the day off. other people also. i see something moving around on my screen. this is cool. there you go. traffic is moving along relatively well on 237. i watch the tv screens, don't think i don't. traffic looks good especially on day like today when we don't have a lot going on. i check in with the chp, list here, and westbound 92 looks good along with all the traffic that we've seen. couple things out there have turned into very minor things. we had a crash northbound 880 at high street that was cleared and almost the backup went

candles. and a message board to write messages for grieving families. >> i've had forever and i love my bears, and i just want my bears to be with them in heaven. >> well-wishers stopping by day and night to pay their respects in front of the university. police escorted students back into the school yesterday to retrieve their belongings. one woman is being held as a hero for locking her classroom door and turning off the lights. the gunman tried to kick it open but walked away. neighbors say they're uplifted by the stories of courage and survival but devastated by the loss being so close to home. >> people that are not from here and they come to get an education, you know, it's really heartbreaking that you have the -- they could have such a tragic end. >> police scoured a trash can yesterday looking for the murder weapon. but were unable to find it. they will resume searches

today. meanwhile, new information that 43-year-old oneg changed his name 10 years ago. his original name of soon nan goh sounded like a girl's. his intended target monday was former assistant nursing program director one kim of danville. police are also investigating whether goh had more than one target. he will enter a plea at the end of the month. tara moriarity, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning we're learning more about another victim of the oikos university tragedy. she's grace kim, a 23-year-old nursing student who lived and worked in union city. >> kim's friends and coworkers shared this home video with ktvu. the 23-year-old worked as a

bartender. friends and coworkers say kim was playful, vibrant, positive and focused. >> it's good when you see somebody that is younger than you that is just -- they have all their stuff together. and that's what -- grace was -- she was doing so well and she was just on such a right track. >> grace kim graduated from foothill hoop in pleasanton five years ago. her friends have organized a fund for her funeral expenses and for her family. stay with ktvu and ktvu.com for continuing coverage on the oikos university shooting. we'll post any new information as we get it. a man suspected of robbing several bay area banks has been arrested. 22-year-old jeremy morton was arrested during a traffic stop in sacramento county. morton is believed to have robbed banks in concord, oakland, san leandro, livermore and stockton. all of them happened between february and march of this year. a car stuck on oakland

railroad tracks near jefferson street overnight. this one here happened just before 1 a.m. the driver was apparently not familiar with the area and made a wrong turn. now, one freight train did have to stop for a while while the emergency crews removed that car. but the scene was cleared in about 45 minutes. concern is growing about peeping tom incidents on the uc berkeley campus. between february and march there were at least five reports of someone spying on women in dormitory bathrooms. in one incident, a woman told police she saw someone recording her with a cell phone camera while she was in the shower. university police are now urging women not to go to the bathroom alone and to notify police right away if they see something suspicious. the search continues for missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar, but the focus has shifted. coming up at 8:00, where search teams are now looking in hopes of finding clues in lamar's

disappearance. jury deliberations will begin today in a race discrimination case involving richmond police. attorneys wrapped up closing arguments yesterday afternoon. seven of richmond's top ranking african-american police officers filed the civil suit in 2007. they claim police chief chris magnus and a former deputy chief subjected them to racial harassment and discrimination. just about 90 minutes from right now, suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi returns to court. he'll go before a judge to confirm that he did enroll in domestic violence counseling. he was ordered to take the classes following the domestic violence incident involving his wife on new year's eve. mirkarimi goes before the city's ethics commission in about three weeks. that is the first step of a process that could eventually remove him from office. meantime, mirkarimi's wife wrote an opinion piece in the

new video of a high-speed chase in wisconsin involving a wrong-way driver. deputies first noticed the suspect after the car sped by them in the wrong direction. the chase lasted for several minutes, with a number of squad cars following its speeds more than 100 miles per hour. it ended after the suspect hit multiple cars. luckily, no one was seriously injured. and there is no structural damage to the richmond-san rafael bridge following a big truck fire on its lower deck. the truck's engine burst into flames about 10:00 yesterday morning. a ktvu assignment editor shot this video of the dark smoke. firefighters closed down both eastbound lanes for about 10 minutes while they put out the flames. the truck driver jumped out of his vehicle in time and was not injured. he was hauling sparkling wine and his load was not damaged.

yoo-hoo time tilt workers had quite a clean-up after this chase. a officer spotted a crane driving without its headlights yesterday morning. and he notified police. the driver did not stop right away. instead he raised the boom knocking down trees and power lines. the driver eventually did surrender it. took crews several hours to clean the road and replaced the counseled power lines. the district attorney's office in san francisco investigating an online post by a bicyclist who hit and killed a 71-year-old man. police say the bicyclist hit 71- year-old man last thursday as he was crossing market street. now police say cyclist chris b. wrote about the accident on his blog. he reportedly described it all in great detail. and also his helmet for saving his life. the d.a. is still considering whether to file charges in the case. today you're asked to leave your car, leave public

from us. that driveway is where 20-year- old fremont man was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. he died from the injury early this morning. so a homicide investigation is going on here and you can see this street, central avenue, is blocked off to traffic. traffic being diverted on that end. this is duster bury, a lot of traffic on this end of the street being diverted and having to turn off north here. this morning we have seen police stop to talk to residents as they drove out of the apartment building where this all hammed. let's show you that video now that we have from early this morning. police are still looking for potential witnesses, and they are still trying to talk to people about what they may have seen or heard last night. some neighbors told us they heard what sounded like an argument going on outside the apartment building before hearing several gunshots fired. >> he had just come out to his car and was leaving, and when this happened. and then he saw another man

bail. a convicted killer already serving a life term in san quinten receives another life sentence. prosecutors say frank souza fatally stabbed fellow inmate edward schaeffer two years ago. schaeffer was sent to prison for a drunk driving cash that killed nine-year-old melody and her father in novato. souza killed schaeffer to avenge the death of the girl. he read a statement in court this week saying, the innocence of a child will be defended at all costs. construction of the smart train project is set to begin in santa rosa. workers will begin rebuilding railroad lines near third street on april 27th. the work is in preparation for smart commuter trains that will run from santa rosa to san rafael. an extension north to cloverdale is also in the works. but that will come later. caltrain says ridership is up and continues to grow.

almost 300 more flights as it prepares dozens of planes damaged by hailstorms earlier this week. the cancellations are affecting flights in and out of dallas/fort worth international airport. those planes were caught in the big storms on tuesday that pounded the airport and caused about a dozen tornadoes in north texas. so in all, american airlines and its american eagle affiliate have cancelled about 1600 flights since those storms hit. we'll keep an eye on it and bring you more details as they're available. four men in sonoma county arrested in a child porn sting, three of the men from santa rosa. 11 different agencies took past in the investigation. investigators say they searched the internet for people downloading and distributing child porn. then they contacted internet service providers to track down the suspects. the men are now held on $10,000 bail. we're now learning more

concern is growing about peeping tom incidents on the uc berkeley campus. between february and march, there were at least five reports of someone spying on women in dormitory bathrooms and one incident a woman told police she saw someone recording her with a cell phone camera while she was in the shower. university police are urging women not to go to the bathroom alone and to notify police right away if they see something suspicious. a car was stuck on oakland railroad tracks near jefferson street overnight. this happened just before 1 a.m. the driver was apparently not familiar with the area and made a wrong turn. one freight train car did center to stop while emergency crews removed the vehicle. the scene was cleared in about 45 minutes. a teenager had to be rescued after he got stranded on some rocks at lands end in san francisco. some diners at the nearby cliff house noticed him and notified authorities. rescue crews used a long board to get to the boy and bring him
