killed 6 women, one man, and injured others. >> we're a small close-knit school and community. this tragedy has profoundly touched all of us. >> reporter: in a brief statement on behalf of the school, garcia said administrators are cooperating with law enforcement and are offering counseling to students whose families need it. making good on one promise on this banner. the school says it will remember the victims by holding a concert like this six days a week for the rest of the month. and this afternoon we watch someone cleaning the front steps of the school here. we're told cleaning has also begun inside. at spring break scheduled at this school for next week, officials say they're still deciding whether they will resume classes after that. we also asked the district attorney's office about the gun founded. they wouldn't offer any comment other than saying

--feeling some of the effects of smoke inhalation. >> traffic backed up for miles there on eastbound interstate 580. the inmates were kept under heavy guard and transferred on to another vehicle shortly after the fire started. >> tonight we're learning 72 fugitives were arrested after a massive sweep in san francisco this week. 70 officers with the police and sheriff's department along with state parole agents all fanned out across the city wednesday afternoon and rounded up people wanted for a range of crimes. chief greg sur says fugitive sweeps are a good deterrent. >> it has the collateral effect or chilling effect on the people that know they're wanted because they know that basically we're keeping track. we have a list. we continue to act ively search daily. >> of the 72 people arrested, 50 had outstanding felony warrants. 17 had parole violations and five had outstanding misdemeanor charges. >> dozens of arrests were made

today after an angry protest at lawrence livermore national laboratory. we were there as the religious and antinuclear groups held their annual good friday vigil at the lab. officers took 44 people in to custody during a protest outside the main gate of the lab. the protesters demanded the u.s. stop developing and storing nuclear weapons. >> try and get our government to stop spending money on weapons. we need that money because our people are struggling for healthcare for schools and roads full of pot holes. >> the group had carried out the protest every good friday for the last three decades. >> president obama told a white house gathering on women and economics that his healthcare reform law has helped women make more strides. he says they've

had expanded access and more than 1 million young women are insured now because they can stay on their parents' plan. >> later this year women will receive access to preventive care, like domestic violence screening and contraception at no additional cost. >> the president also took a jab at mitt romney by once again stating his support for planned parenthood. romney wants to cut federal funding for that organization. >> the kodak company has been asked for $14 million in bonuses. it would go to executives as an incentive to stay while the company reorganized. kodak today plans to withdraw its application to drop supplemental health insurance for retirees and set up a committee to work with the

issue. >> unemployment shows both good and not so good results for the month of march. the unemployment rate fell to 8.2%. that's the lowest since january of 2009. however, analysts say it was mostly due to people who dropped out of the labor market and stopped looking for work. most exerts expected it to hold steady at 8.4. they anticipated 400,000 jobs to be added, instead 120,000 were. baby boomers aging, personal care aides, nurses and physicians top the list. the list says the need for receptionists and carpenters will increase by 20/20 -- 2020.

>> the front end of the plane started going down then a huge black cloud of smoke. >> a navy pilot crashed in virginia today. he and his instructor both ejected safely. it dove in to an apartment complex and burst in to flames. >> virginia beach is a highly populated area with a number of military institutions. it took off from oceana and soon suffered a catastrophic mechanical malfunction. the pilots actually dumped fuel

before crashing in to an apartment complex. that's a move many say saved countless lives. >> i looked down my bedroom window and saw nothing but red and orange flashing, and just a crackling noise. >> reporter: the fighter jet lifted off from oceana. the plane crashed in to an apartment complex and burst in to flames. >> as we came up on the scene, there's these large fire balls just coming up. there's ambulances coming in from everywhere. >> reporter: people in the neighborhood rushed to help emergency responders carry hoses and tend to the injured. one man found the jets pilot still strapped in his seat. >> he apologized very much for hitting our complex. i told him don't worry about it. everything's going to be fine. >> reporter: the navy says the pilot of the jet dumped as much fuel as possible before the

crash. emergency responders say that may have kept them alive. people have said they've worried about this type of accident as the navy conducts training missions over the heavily populated virginia beach area. >> it seems the past few months they get more and more daring with the maneuvers. they're starting to fly lower over us, seems like they're going faster speeds. >> the navy says the two crew members who ejected from the fighter jet are doing well tonight. 5 on the ground were hurt but have been released from the hospital. at this point, no deaths have been reported, but virginia beach officials say they're still searching through the damaged apartments and have not accounted for all the people who live there. >> we have some developing news right now from oakland, specifically foothill and 39th. you can see a utility truck crashed in to a business. at this point we don't know what caused the crash. we also talked to someone on the scene who says a woman was hit in that

accident, but is okay. that's what we're getting from someone there on the ground. again, this is happening at foothill and 39th. we're working to get more information. as we get that, we'll bring it to you. again, you see the headline there. a utility truck somehow has crashed in to a building at foothill and 39th. the ffa is investigating the actions of an air traffic controller in denver who ignored the request for an emergency landing. the air traffic controller did not understand a mayday sign from an express pilot. the pilot had smoke in the cockpit and requested help. the plane landed at denver international airport and was evacuated. >> travel problems continue for american airlines tonight. they canceled nearly 300 flights today due to sorting out the damage from their planes.

hail damaged dozens of planes involving to american and its affiliate, american eagle. at dallas/fort worth international airport, they're trying to repair or replace the planes. american and american eagle had had to cancel 1600 flights since tuesday's storms. in the summer before, they've 16 homes are uninhabitable. volunteers are scouring the surrounding regions finding personal items such as photographs and trying to get them back to their owners. >> let's talk about our weather now. the weekend is here. mark is here. what are we looking at? >> pretty clear out there with skies. definitely want to bundle up. we could be tracking a few 30s first thing saturday morning. it's rain free at least for right now. the rain showers, way up to our north and way up to our east.

near the beach we have marin county half marathon, 10 k and 5x. temperatures in the 40s. race time, up too --to 48 degrees. you can't pick out just a few high clouds offshore. we'll have a few high clouds in to saturday. this is the factor we're watching for, the second half of the weekend, the storm system developing. we've been tracking it. it will bring in more clouds as we head in to eastern sunday. tomorrow morning, we're talking about the cool start, 30s and 40s. the change in to the afternoon hours you'll notice will be warmer afternoon highs. the warming trend started today. really kicks in to the weekend. widespread 60s across the bay area. mid to upper 60s and a few neighborhoods could be approaching the 70-degree mark, especially in the santa clara

marijuana trade school. >> federal courts are facing federal work loads without enough judges on the bench. >> the oldest judicial vacancy in the country is on the court appeals 9th circuit. 29 judgeships. and one of those is judge steven trot who took senior status in 2004. >> as of today, the administrative offices of the u.s. courts have declared 34 judicial emergencies, vacancies on courts with a heavy workload. the circuit appeals alone has four emergencies. they blame the u.s. senate where many presidential nominations to fill the judgeships have languished. >> congress's inability to get things done the way they got things done 20 or 30 years ago is a big problem. >> there are 81 vacancies

across the nation. president obama has nominated 32 judges to fill some of the vacancies and nominations are awaiting senate action. out of the 32 spots, 13 qualify as judicial emergencies. >> the santa monica college board of trustees voted today to postpone a two-tier plan. the fee hike was held off to take more public comment. police pepper sprayed students as they tried to get in to the meeting to discuss the plan. the proposal causes for fees to increase by about 400% for the most popular courses at the college. aids activists are calling for a boycott of candies made by hershey company. a boarding school rejected a student because he was hiv positive.

developing news that we first brought you earlier this newscast. news chopper 2 is over the scene of an accident at foothill boulevard and 39th avenue in oakland. we know it was a utility truck that crashed in to a bail bonds store. we spoke to a woman who said the truck actually hit her. that woman confirms she was not hurt in the accident and says no one else was hurt either. this happened 45 minutes ago at a bail bonds store on foothill and 39th avenue in oakland. hope and help. how doctors here in northern california are giving women a better chance at catching a potentially deadly disease. they say that with great power comes great responsibility.

construction in santa rosa. workers are to rebuild railroad lines near 3rd street on april 27th. the work will be preparation for commuter trains set from santa rosa. north of clover dale is also in the works but would come later. it seems more and more people are ditching their cars and finding other ways to get around. people are becoming less reliant on cars, especially young people. according to a study, the number of miles driven by people between the ages of 16 and 34 dropped 23% between 2001 and 2009. and during that time period, travel on public transit increased by 40% for people of that same age group. >> the latest technology in breast cancer detection is now available in sacramento. it's called breast homosynthesis. it takes 15 images of the breast to

nothing to prepare for problems. >> a ship that floated to the gulf of alaska is now on the bottom of the ocean. the fishing boat was waiting to be scrapped when it broke loose during the japanese tsunami and has been floating across the pacific ever since. let's turn back to our bay area weather. a lot of people have outdoor plans for the weekend. what are we up against? >> i think the weather pattern will cooperate for the most part. we've been talking about the chance for a few showers. that chance still up mainly for one part of the bay area. in the short-term, we have mostly clear skies out there. still a bit of a breeze but nothing too extreme. a beautiful day across the region with plenty of sunshine and wind speeds. nothing too extreme, around 14 to 20 miles per hour. here we go. some of the current numbers. you can see at this 5:00 hour, we have temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s.
