good morning, welcome to mornings on 2 happy easter sunday on this april 8th i'm claudine wong. >> and happy easter everyone i'm mike mibach. looking to be one of the picture perfect days outside let's get to rosemary. >> you will need the jacket getting out early. cold once again within a few degrees of yesterday. we are partly cloudy over the area as mike mentioned just as nice as today. we will be turning cool and wet. and happening now in oakland firefighter are on the scene of an early morning fire that damaged several businesses. allie rasmus is live at the scene with more on the fire fight and the aftermath. >> reporter: the building where this fire started is right behind us. this is on the corner of

fruitvale and farnham street. including the salon. we can peek in the front door and see the business is a total loss. a lot of things destroyed. the fire started according to investigators on the other side of the building. kind of where you see the smoke still smoldering over there. and the restaurant this is what it looked like shortly after 3:30 this morning. firefighters went into the building to try to fight it from the inside. you can see in the video chunks of the ceiling inside falling and breaking away while firefighters were in there. they said it's not safe to be inside so they got out and started tackling the fire from the outside. >> the challenges are it's an older building and common attic so it was spreading quickly from building to building. >> reporter: no one was hurt or inside but the restaurant where

this started is just 20-30 feet away from another apartment building where 60 people were living. there is a cinder block wall that separated the fire from those residences. coming up in our next live report we will have more on what the let dense saw and heard. back out here live firefighters will be out here for most of the day checking to make sure the fire doesn't flair up again. they will if checking for hot spots. you can see a little bit of smoldering up on the roofs. there is a firefighter on the roof checking it out. there will be a firefighter presence out here for the rest of the day. live in oakland allie rasmus. southern california freeway is shut down after a gasoline tanker truck crashed and exploded. it happened shortly after 11:00 last night on westbound highway 134 in glendale. the crash created a line of fire. flames shoot into the air. highway patrol says the tanker was carrying about 9,000 gallons of gas when it collided

with a sedan. they had the fire under control around 12:30 this morning. the cause of the crash is still being investigated. there is no word on any injuries. oakland police are investigating a smash and grab robbery at a computer store. a truck ran into the store early this morning. investigators believe there were several people inside that truck at least one of them ran inside the store, grabbed four laptops and took off running. police arrested one suspect a short time later and found one of the stolen laptops. the other three are still missing. concord man and nine-year- old daughter are being remembered after they were hit and killed by a stolen car. police say a 17-year-old was speeding out of control when he crashed into a fire hydrant and

crashed. family members say nuri was a beloved soccer coach that touched many lives. >> he's a great coach. i can't imagine him being here right now. >> this is a huge loss for the community he was a loving loving father. >> the 17-year-old is in jail facing vehicular manslaughter charges. there are new developments in the shooting of five people in tulsa, oklahoma. police announced the arrest of two men overnight. authorities say they are suspects 19-year-old jake england and 32-year-old alvin watts will be charged with three counts of first degree murder and two counts of intent to kill. the shootings happened at four places in the predominantly

black neighborhood. the two suspects are white. detectives are interrogating them. they don't know yet know the motive and have not ruled out the possibility of hate crimes. >> it was through the work and investigation of our detectives and agents and deputies and through the tip line we set up and the tips that the community provided to us and the information that was provided to us all coming to collaboration and lead us to the successful arrest of these two individuals. >> he said police acted on a crime stoppers tip and went to one location and track the suspects after they walk to another location where they were taken into custody. >> at & t is discussing a new contract. the previous contract expired at midnight. the union is free to call a strike but employees say they will work without a contract for now. they are part of the shrinking phone and long distance

service. for at & t wants to cut workers pensions and increase health care premiums and copays. a lot of easter egg hunts planned for this morning if not later in the day. let's check with rosemary to see how the weather is. >> back into the 30s and 40s. while we slept, they slipped once again. we are a little warmer than where we started yesterday. when you talk 3-degree -- 38 degrees that is out right cold. sun has been up 20-25 minutes or so. you can see high clouds drifting over the area. those high clouds will continue to increase. by the second half of the day we could be mostly cloudy. our temperatures will be just as warm as yesterday. 38-degrees in napa. 38 in fairfield and livermore. low 40s concord, san rafael. 49-degrees in oakland. 41 redwood city. 43 for san jose. off to the satellite and radar have been watching the system for a few days.

you can see the main core of the storm still well off the coast. the front ever so slowly moving in over northern california. a few light scattered showers over the coast there. for us it will hold off and bring us dry weather today even tomorrow before finally arrive on tuesday. take a look at what happens. we are picking up here this morning. by 4:00 or so it looks like mostly cloudy. high clouds. we will get that soft sunlight we normally get with the high clouds. tomorrow morning we wake up out the door. we are still dry. it's not until tuesday morning. if this storm stays on track tuesday morning could be a treacherous ride into work. that's what we are lookings at. dry today and tomorrow. and then the wet weather arriving. low 60s to low 70s for the afternoon today. mid high level clouds in the forecast by late afternoon. and then monday will be mostly cloudy. rain will remain offshore. tuesday it looks like the rain finally moving in. 66 expected for this afternoon.

the teenager was dropped off at a hospital just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. surveillance video showed that whoever dropped the victim off did not stay behind to talk to hospital staff. police say they have no suspect information. san jose police department is also investigating a stabbing. officers tell us a man was found stabbed in east san jose just around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. officers performed first aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. the victims name is not being released until his family can be notified. police add they have no suspects at this time. there could be a verdict this week if a race discrimination case involving richmond police. jury deliberations begin on friday a day after attorneys finish their closing arguments. seven of the top ranking officers filed a civil suit in weave. they claimed police chief chris magnus subjected them to racial

harassment and discrimination. >> nbc news has fired a producer for a misleading story in the trayvon martin case. he edited a part of george zimmerman's 911 call. the edit made it son like zimmerman volunteered to police with no prompting that martin was black. zimmerman was actually answering the 911 operators question about martin's race. nbc has apologize for the error. a pasadena teenager that was shot and killed by police was laid to arrest. past tee that police say -- pasadena police say they shot him when they responded to a robbery. he was unarmed when police shot him. the family has filed a wrongful death suit. in our election 2012 coverage mitt romney continues to hold a large lead in the else delegates for the

presidential nomination. newt gingrich continues to remain in the race. gingrich has almost no chance of winning the nomination, however the washington post reports gingrich will stay in the race to call attention to issues important to him. some ideas gingrich is pushing for the republican party platform include a renewed commitment to the tenth amendment. and balanced budget provision. rick santorum remains off the campaign trail. he is at his daughter's bedside as she remains hospitalized. she has a genital condition. this is the second time this year the child has been hospitalized. santorum plans to be back on the campaign trail on tuesday. a minnesota boy is recovering from a risky surgery to stop his uncontrollable laughter. two-year-old matthew has a rare seizure disorder that makes him have hundreds of laughing fits

second hand smoke. tomorrow people living near san francisco polk street will get to voice their opinions about noise concerns in the neighborhood. some residence say the problem area is polk street between bush and post where there is a high concentration of bars. residence will meet at the public library at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. there is controversy over the release of recordings of a new orleans saint coach usualing his players to injure players of san francisco 49ers. they made the recordings in january. he was working on a film about former player steve gleeson who is battling als. he said he never gave him to release that recording but he and gleeson did agree to let a third party mediate and says that unnamed person said to release the recordings. san jose sharks know who

they will play in the first round of the stanley cup playoffs. they came from two down. danny boyle scored two goals including the back hand winner. it puts the sharks in seventh place. that means they will play second seeded st. louis blues. we will find out when that first game is very soon. and shark fans are already fired up in san jose about 100 of them lined up yesterday morning to buy playoff tickets before they knew who the sharks would be playing or when the games would be held. fans city they are willing to pen big money to attend a playoff game. local businesses are looking to lure fans and their dollars. sports fever says it sees a sales bump come playoff time. if the sharks ever win the stanley cup it could be the

biggest event ever were this store. >> probably would triple what we did in giants world series business. >> playoff tickets don't come cheap. one man we talked to paid $600 for four tickets. on line breakers that price is ranging from $90 a piece to more than $7,000. the magic kingdom is off the list of stops for a high speed rail system. the head of the rail authority says ending the line in l.a. instead of anaheim would trim 40 miles off the route and $6 billion off the price tag. the walt disney company -- but rail officials say it would stop the service in los angeles. drivers in california are getting a bit of a relief at the pump thanks to a church. people began lining up for the discount gas in victorville. the church raised $10,000 so

good old fashion egg hunt is an easter tradition. for some mothers and children one egg hunt came with extra special meaning. this egg hunt took place in a reck national yard in a woman's prison. the event allowed mothers to spend quality time with their children and more than a dozen children of all ages raced to scoop up the 200 easter eggs. the easter egg hunt was put on a program to aim to reduce the impact on pap rental incarceration. this years theme is let's go. let's play let's move. as part of the first ladies campaign against childhood obesity. the easter egg hunt or roll is the largest public event at the white house. 30,000 people won tickets through an online lottery. there are lots of easter

early morning fire sends flames shoot into the air and has the first firefighters on scene calling for reenforcements. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. it took dozens of firefighters to get that fire out. right now investigators are on scene trying to figure out the cause. it all happened in the area of fruitvale avenue and international boulevard. allie rasmus is live at the scene with a close up look at the damage. >> reporter: this is the building where the fire started. there is at least four possibly five businesses destroyed by the fire. one of the businesses you are looking over there kelly beauty

salon. you peek inside the door you can see a lot of the damage. no one was in any of the businesses when the fire started so no one was hurt. the fire started at 3:30 this morning. you can see flames sooting through the roof of the building up into the air. firefighters rushed into the burning building but quickly realized the roof was not stable. there was chunks of the ceiling falling on them. they quickly got out and started tackling the fire from the outside. about an hour after it started they got it under control. the building where the fire started is next door to a larger apartment building with about 60 people. many of them families living there. earlier this morning the manager of that apartment that is also a resident there told us what many heard when the fire broke out. several residents report -- he explained in spanish several residents reported a loud

popping coming from wires in the back of the building. firefighters do believe it started in the back of this building. we take you back out here live behind this front of the building you are looking at is the restaurant on the other side of the wall. that is where they think this fire started. they are investigating the exact cause this morning. in the meantime they will have firefighters out here putting out hot spots. live in oakland allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. a reward is being offered for the safe return of sierra lamar. sierra's family made the announcement yesterday. that is where 49ers quarterback alex smith and several other 49ers and 450 volunteers lined up to help search for clues. this is the event volunteer search organized since she went missing three weeks ago. because of all the donations they received they were able to take the next step to find their daughter. a $10,000 reward for

received a personalized box from the opposing team. stuffed inside were things like sunflower seeds and hair bows and a personalized letter from each girl. the gesture brought some of the girls to tears. >> i'm really sorry about your tragedy. i hope you and everyone else is doing well. have a nice easter. >> it's been six weeks since a teenage gunman opened fire on the chardon campus. three students were killed and five others injured. a british helicopter suffered a mishap 15 miles northwest of yuma yesterday. they were practicing how to land the helicopter when something went wrong. seven people suffered minor injuries. the cause of the landing problem is under investigation. the crash comes several weeks after seven marines were killed when two helicopters crashed into each other during a routine exercise over the yew mall training range complex.

people that live in the apartment complex damaged during friday's navy jet crash are hoping to get relief. the virginia beach residence that live in the apartments are getting advice on filing claims and obtaining long-term housing. the jet crash injured seven people. including the two pilots. >> we were told to come here. we would meet with the navy people and the police. let us know about our belongings and animals that were in the apartment and what to do from there. we have nothing but the clothes on our backs. we have nowhere to go. we are staying at a hotel right now. we just want to know if our cat is alive. we are here to find out. >> the fire department says 40 apartments were damaged or destroyed in the crash. rescue crews say all residence have been accounted for. united airlines taking off

from the oakland airport. united will stop flights to and from the east bay in june. the carrier only has a few flights from oakland and denver and said to be struggling financially. united say it will offer a refund for people that already have flights booked. radiation that spilled from the power plant after the earthquake made it to the california coast. the san francisco chronicle reports a month after the disaster, scientists found kelp off the coast of the bay area that was con tan named -- contaminated with short lived isotopes. it had no known effects on the giant kelp or other marine live life. the radiation is now all gone. 7:36. the associated press reporting that mike wallace of course known for years of great work on cbs 60 minutes has died. that is just coming across to us now. we'll follow that and have more

good morning, to you. a live look a beautiful blue sky oaf the golden gate and the marathon runners if you want to join the finish line festivities going on at aquatic park later today. as we reported a few minutes ago cbs news man mike wallace has passed away. cbs spokesman said wallace died last night at the age of 93. he was one of the original correspondents for 60 minutes starting back in 1968. he retired in 2005 but continued to occasional report for the program for a couple of years. three bay area marines are back home after a yearlong deployment overseas. a patriot guard and family members were on hand yesterday afternoon. master sergeant christopher

herb gunnery sergeant -- have all spent the past year in afghanistan. >> it's fan sayst tick being back with my family. a year is a long time being separated from my family. my family supports me in everything i do. >> one of the marines said he made it home just in time for his wedding anniversary which was yesterday. utah and -- united states and afghanistan appear to have reached a compromise over nighttime raids. afghan's foreign ministry amade the announcement this morning. it's not clear what the details are. however, nighttime raids by american forces have been a continuing source of tension between the afghan government and the u.s. military. rescuers have managed to get food and drinks to nine trapped miners in peru. the food is being pushed to the miners through a hose. the men have been trapped in the mining shaft since

thursday. they are behind about 20 feet of debris that fell when they set off an explosion to remove copper orr. they were working on their own without authorization. new satellite images are raising doubts on whether syria is getting ready to come ply with the cease fire agreement. the u.s. ambassador to syria released these photos. it shows forces remaining in place. the cease fire is officially set to take effect on thursday. watch as protestors throw eggs at a greek journalist during a live broadcast. 17 intruders broke into a tv studio during the evening news yesterday. they pelted that reporter with yogurt as egg as he interviewed

that freeway up. the cause of the crash is still being investigated. and there is no word on any injuries. a concord man and nine-year- old daughter is being remembered after being hit and killed by a speeding car. it happened as 41-year-old soliaman nuri and his two daughters were riding their bikes. a 17-year-old was speeding out of control when he crashed into a fire hydrant, hit the family of three and then the side of a building. nuri's 12-year-old daughter survived the crash her 9-year- old sister died at the hospital. he was a beloved soccer coach that touched many young lives. >> he's a great coach. i can't imagine him not being here right now. >> this is a huge, huge loss for the community. he was a loving loving father. >> the 17-year-old driver is in juvenile hall facing vehicle manslaughter charges.

flames engulf an oakland building overnight destroying several businesses. welcome back to mornings on 2. the fire started around 3:30 this morning. >> and the flames were so intense firefighters had to get out of the building. allie rasmus has been at the scene all morning long talking to residence and business owner ifs shop joins us now. >> this is the building where the fire broke out around 3:30 this morning. we just got an update from fire officials about the number of businesses effected here. a total of six businesses are here. five of them are total loss. including the one you are looking at right now. this used to be a beauty salon. take a look at the flames from

when this fire started at 3:30 this morning. firefighters rushed into the building but quickly realized the roof was not stable. in this video you can see chunks of the roof falling on the firefighters. they had to get out and tackle the fire from the outside. the fire started in the back of the restaurant. that is one of the five businesses destroy here. investigators now say it appears to be an accidental fire that may have started with shorted electrical wires in the back of the building. we talked to the owner of the restaurant he said this is his families business. he said he has fire insurance but the owner of the building does not have fire insurance. he asked him what the restaurant meant to him and his family. >> the first step is to build something bigger. we are planning to open a second restaurant by november.

the mirrors are still hanging on the walls. the flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived 3:30 this morning. they quickly realized the roof was not stable. from this video you can see chunks of the roof falling on to the firefighters that quickly got out and started tackling the fire from the outside. it started in the back of this restaurant, one of the five businesses destroyed. the owner of this restaurant said this is his family's business they had for seven years. he said he has fire insurance but the owner of the building doesn't have fire insurance. he's worried about his future and the owner said what this restaurant meant to him and his family. >> to build something bigger, we are planning to open a second restaurant by november, we have a lot of dreams. >> of course all of those plans,

he says, are now on hold for that second restaurant. the building where the fire started is next door to a large apartment building with 60 people living there. the fire did not spread there. no one had to be evacuated. some residents told us they heard a loud explosion coming from the back of the building before the fire began. we're again back here live. fire vest gietds say this fire -- fire investigators say it may have started with electrical wire in the back of the building. a lot of people who worked in the five businesses, are coming back out here trying to assess the damage and figure out where to go from here. firefighters plan to be out here for the next few hours to make sure no hot spots flare up in this building. local police investigating a smash and grab robbery at a computer store. a truck rammed into the store on lake shore avenue earlier this morning. investigators believe there were several people inside of the truck. at least one of them ran inside the store, grabbed four laptops

and took off running. police arrested one suspect a short time late and found one of those stolen laptops. the other three are still missing. a concord man and 9-year-old daughter are being remembered after being hit and killed by a speeding car. it happened as 41-year-old and his two daughters were riding their bikes. a 17-year-old was speeding out of control when he crashed into a fire hydrant, hit the family of three and then the side of a building. the 12-year-old daughter survived the crash. her 9-year-old sister died at the hospital. they say she was a beloved soccer coach that touched many young lives. >> he's a great coach. i can't imagine him not being here right now. >> this is a huge, huge loss for the community. he was a loving, loving father. >> the 17-year-old driver is now in juvenile hall facing

welcome back to ktvu. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. several oakland business owners are learning a fire has burned right through their businesses. here is a look at some of the smoke and flames from the early morning fire on fruitvale avenue. it quickly grew to three alarms and coming up at 9:45, we'll have a live look at exactly what was damaged. what is left this morning. and what investigators think was the cause. police in tulsa, oklahoma, announced the arrests of two men in connection with the shootings of five people. the suspects are 19-year-old jake england and 32-year-old alvin watts. the shootings happened at four places in tul is a's predominantly black north side on friday morning. the five victims are african-american and three of them have died. police don't know yet the motive and say they have not ruled out the possibility of hate crimes. >> it was through the work and

crews saw come in was 16 pounds. salmon season ends in november. radiation that spilled from japan's fukushima plant did make it to the california coast. the san francisco chronicle reporting a month after the disaster scientists found kelt that was contaminated with radioactive isotopes. it had no known effects on the giant kelp or other marine life. scientists say that radiation is now gone. drivers in southern california are getting relief at a pump thanks to a church. people lined up in victorville, the church raised $10,000 so the gas station could lower the price by a dollar. the pastor said it is his way to help the community during the easter weekend. >> i think it is beautiful. i mean, i'm not even a member of the church and they just embraced me with open arms that fast.

new york jets quarterback tim tebow will speak to 20,000 people at a texas church this easter sunday. the church in georgetown near austin said tebow reached out to them a month ago and said he wanted to speak. tebow is well known for his strong christian beliefs and often addresses religious congregations. and this is new video showing the easter sunday service today at the national cathedral in washington, d.c.. the army military district of washington led today's service. the easter bunny is making his rounds through the bay area today. the montclair lions club is sponsoring an ease club at the montclair recreation center. in san francisco the annual spring celebration and easter parade kicks off on union street. there will be plenty of free activities, food and of course the easter bunny.

the next weekend looks dry. i'll look at lunch time numbers coming up. united states and afghanistan appear to have reached a compromise over controversial nighttime raids by american forces. afghan's foreign ministry made that announcement later today. it is not sure what the compromised details and u.s. officials are not commenting. nighttime raids have been a continuing source of tension between the afghan government and the u.s. military. new sat satellite images are raising doubts about whether syria will agree with the cease-fire agreement. the images show syrian forces remaining in place despite claims from the syrian government that those forces have moved. the cease-fire is officially set to take effect on thursday. rescuers managed to get food and drinks to nine trapped miners in peru. the food is being pushed to the miners through a hose.

he died last night at a care facility in connecticut where he had lived in recent years. a 17-year-old driver is facing charges in connections with a crash that killed a father and his 9-year-old daughter. concord police say the teen was speeding when his car slammed into the family while they were riding their bikes. we're continuing to follow overnight news from oakland. a huge fire damaged businesses on fruitvale avenue. we have reaction from business owners. >> there were six businesses affected by the fire in this shopping center. five of those six were completely destroyed, including this restaurant, which is on the fruitvale side of this shopping center. you see the broken glass in front. there are people out in front boarding up the windows of the restaurant. >> reporter: this was the scene of a 4-alarm fire that started 4:30 this morning. the flames shot through the roof. firefighters rushed into the

burning building but then they realized the roof wasn't stable. chunks of the roof were falling on the firefighters. they quickly got out and started tackling the fire from the outside. the building where the fire started is next door to a large apartment building with 60 people, many of them families, living there. no one there was hurt. the fire didn't spread. no one had to be evacuated. the manager of the apartment who also lives there tells us what the residents heard before the fire broke out. >> he explained in spanish that several residents reported hearing some loud explosion or loud booming noise coming from the back of the restaurant and fire investigators say this fire was likely caused by a problem with electrical wiring in the building or possibly the gas pipes. the owner of the restaurant said he is overwhelmed with the prospect of starting his family

business from scratch. complicating matters, he has fire insurance for his restaurant but he said the owner of this 15,000 square foot shopping center does not have fire insurance. so this morning there are a lot out here you can see, lot of business owners, lot of people who worked in these five businesses that were destroyed, came back to see where they are going to go from here and what to do next. at this point firefighters believe this fire was accidental and may have started with an electrical wiring problem. a 16-year-old is in critical condition after a stabbing in east palo alto. the teenager was dropped off at a hospital just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. surveillance video showed that who ever dropped the victim off did not stay behind to talk to the hospital. police say they have no suspect information. san jose police are investigating a stabbing police. police tell us man was stabbed in east san jose about 4:00

all right. it is time for your live drive time traffic. there is highway 24 in lafayette where things are moving smoothly. things looking good there. bay bridge, look at the toll plaza for you. it has been good all morning long and traffic continues to move smoothly through there. however, it is a different situation in the south bay. we're following that fatal accident in san jose, southbound interstate 280 near route 17. the highway patrol said a car crashed into some trees and as a result the southbound 280 transition to southbound 17 is still closed and it is expected to be closed for at least another half hour. well the san jose sharks now know who they will play in the first round of the stanley cup playoffs. they came from two down. last night in overtime. 7th place in the western conference standings and that means they will play the st.
