a suspected drunk driver goes on a wild ride across san francisco this morning, hitting parked cars before crashing. we'll tell you what an eyewitness said happened at the end of this accident. a powerful quake rocks indonesia overnight. what we've learned about the threat of another disastrous tsunami. the steady rain has moved east but now showers and possible thunderstorms, yes, are in the forecast.

"mornings on 2" starts right now. sh well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2" i'm dave clark. >> i'm claudine wong. it's wednesday, april 11th. tori campbell has today off. happening right now, a major crash investigation in san francisco. a car believed to have been involved in several hit-and-run crashes flipped over near the muni tracks along the embarcadero. alex savidge is there right at the scene. what do you know, alex? >> reporter: good morning, dave. police say this was a suspected driver who went on a dangerous ride all over san francisco this morning, hitting several parked cars before crashing his

suv near at embarcadero and green street. he crashed his suv right on top of the muni tracks. this all happened around 5:15 this morning. what i want to show you right now is a photo i just got from a witness to the crash. it shows the vehicle. police say he has nonlife- threatening injuries and will be arrested. this started near polk and broadway. he hit four parked cars. a witness spotted him and eventually followed this driver all the way here to the embarcadero, where eventually he crashed his suv on the muni tracks and i did talk a short time ago with a man who works nearby who says he ran over after this accident, heard it happen and went to check on the driver, a man he said seemed very confused. >> he was wondering where the driver was and he -- the officer is like, you were the driver. the officer was like, you were

the driver. he said no, i wasn't driving. where is the driver? he was loaded out of his mind. >> reporter: again, san francisco police telling us this morning that driver who crashed his suv here along the embarcadero this morning on top of the muni tracks did appear to be under the influence being treated at the hospital but obviously facing dui charges. again, we did check in with muni, they say all of their trains are back up here and running, the f-line is all clear and the trains are running along the embarcadero along the crash. we're live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. there are no reports of casualties or major damage from two massive earthquakes off the coast of indonesia. tsunami warning were issued for the entire indian ocean after the earthquake. this is new video from indonesia taken from an amateur

photographer as the chandelier in his house sways back and forth. tsunami alerts have been lifted for most of the region but a tsunami alert remains in effect for tee unusual shaw. the first -- indonesia. the first quake hit this morning at 1:00. one hotel guest hurt himself by jumping out of a window. there was a mini wave measuring less than 30 inches that rolled onto the indonesia coast. these quakes hit the same general area as the quake that triggered the area in 2004. some waves reached nearly 100 feet high. 7:04. a driver has been killed after being hit by a freight train in san leandro. this happened late last night at the railroad crossing on castro street near san leandro

boulevard. you can just look at the damage and see -- look at this. it was a violent collision. the train smashed in the rear of the car. it's now half of its original size. investigators think the driver may have lost control before the train crashed in to it. no one else was hurt. the head of oakland's oikos university says the future of the school is very much in doubt after last week's shooting. classes have been canceled indefinitely. once the students do go back many will be moved to an east bay campus to avoid further trauma. two possible locations reportedly are patton university in oakland and unitech college in fremont. well, within the next hour, the latest search for sierra lamar will resume. now, authorities think the 15- year-old may have been kidnapped on her way to school march 16th. the klass kids foundation is organizing today's search which will start at 8:00 a.m.

will cost about $16.2 million. >> it's creating jobs. it has a huge return on investment. for every dollar invested, they anticipate $4 to $10 to come back to the area. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. silicon valley is expected to create as many as 5,000 jobs a year here. the plan is to finish the two- phase to berryessa in 2015. they hope to complete the completion to san jose the year after that. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, lorraine. 7:07. sal says be careful wherever you drive this moving. you have your eye on the san mateo bridge. >> reporter: that's right the it's a little wet out there -- that's right. it's a little wet out there. you can see it's still definitely wet. this morning's commute is still wet in some areas. others are beginning to dry off and the chp list has not been all that remarkable which is good but there are some traffic

trouble spots out there. let's move along and take a look at what we have here with the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks like another front, as steve would like to say, is moving true as you are driving on the -- through -- is moving through as you are driving through. westbound 508, this one is reported westbound 508 right near the -- i lost it here on my list. westbound 580 right near the airway boulevard exit. watch for slow traffic coming up to that area. 580, otherwise, though, into castro valley is looking good. southbound 880 from a street on down to fremont is getting a little bit crowded. let's go to steve. all right, sal. thank you. a mostly cloudy morning. now some showers are returning. the rain has moved off to the sacramento valley. but still a lot of cloud cover around. so today, we go from rain to more of a showery pattern. the rain will return tomorrow

for everybody. it rains when it rains on your castle, not mine. maybe some sun. very little. it will be cooler. possible thunderstorms. i mean, the atmosphere is juiced. it's ready to go. it needs a trigger in the atmosphere. that might come in later on. we can use a little heat. a little system is starting to move around the santa cruz mountains, the san mateo coast. this is live stormtracker2, right on the hayward side. you can -- back up along skyline and back into the santa cruz mountains. it's a sign of things to come later on. if they are already starting this early, things will be active. now, some of the rain totals were really interesting. concord .75. dublin had that. one ban stalled out there near crockett and then cordelia and then san leandro to downtown oakland had .82. but san jose had as much as

santa rosa and more than san rafael. you do not see that very often. look at that. there was some kind of unique situations yesterday. two bands and they merge and then stalled out. 40s on the temperatures or very, very low 50s. so the cooler air is starting to filter in. the days are a lot longer now but we get this low streaming in. rainfall amounts today, i would not expect to be too heavy generally less than .10. tonight, that next system approaches, then watch how it spreads good rain into thursday afternoon and then thursday night, friday. look at that. there's 1-inch amounts for almost everybody. we still have about three days to go. by friday afternoon, i think things will start to calm dawn. so lawn know, down to -- solano, down to sacramento and tracy. rain returns on thursday. friday very cool, showery

the main frontal band has moved off back to the santa cruz mountains. there will be pretty good buildups on the clouds. highs upper 50s, low 60s and maybe a few widely scattered thunderstorms. claudine? and then there were three. with rick santorum now out of the republican race for president, the remaining three candidates are looking for his depat chur to give their -- departure to give their campaign a boost. jamie dupree joins us via skype from washington, d.c. with which candidate stands to benefit the most. >> reporter: hey, claudine, when you dig into some of the polling numbers from the states and nationally, you it doesn't -- it doesn't break as evenly as you would think. there would fuel actually be some polls moving to mitt

romney and then to newt gingrich or ron paul. so while newt gingrich yesterday was basically welcoming over santorum supporters saying come join me, arguing he's the last true conservative in the race, it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. now, mitt romney will be the overwhelming favorite in the next voting that will take place in the five states that day, including pennsylvania, that a lot of people thought live team coverage was gonna win. but delaware, new york, connecticut and rhode island. those last two, mitt romney with events there today. at this point in time, a lot of focus on the idea that mitt romney will be the nominee. ron paul and newt gingrich still staying in the race but they certainly have a big disadvantage when it comes to organization. that's the latest from here. >> when do you think, though, that the next candidate may drop out and say, okay, i've

had it. it's not going to happen? >> reporter: ron paul and newt gingrich could run such low- budget operations that honestly i don't see either giving up until mitt romney has the major delegates. newt gingrich's one problem is money. we saw that showcase yesterday. he's in debt overall and then yesterday came the story after rick santorum left the race that gingrich's camp had bounced a check for $500 to get on the ballot in june. it's just a reminder that organizely, when you look at it -- organizationally, when you look at it that way. >> and really, quickly, jamie,

job back. and mirkarimi has added shepherd kopp to his legal team. his clients include in the past, michael jackson, winona ryder. 7:17. well, this morning, a your in santa clara county will read the verdict in the retrial of a silicon valley soft ware engineer who is accused of murder. prosecutors say jason kai shot and killed a lawyer in the parking lot of her hamilton avenue office back in july of 2008. investigators say kai was trying to stop the lawyer from representing his former mother- in-law in a $15 million wrongful death lawsuit. the first trial in 2010 ended in a hung jury. well, at 8:30 this morning, mass murderer charles man son will be the focus of what could be his final parole hearing. at 77, charles manson says he won't be at what will be his 12th parole hearing at core corrine state prison --

korkorin state prison. so charles manson could be 92 years old before eligible for another hearing. manson was convicted in the 1969 murders of actress sharon tate and six others. hundreds of people are now paying tribute to two fallen heros in philadelphia. they are leaving flowers, candles and cards outside a firehouse in honor of the two veteran firefighters who died battling a huge fire on monday. at one point, firefighters stood at attention as the families of the two heroes took part in an emotional memorial service at the firehouse. well, faulty background checks may be harming qualified job seekers. there's been an explosion in criminal background checks. but a group says many people are wrongly identified as having a criminal record and are not always given the chance

of being in the mine. one by one, they are coming out today. they are wearing sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sunlight. the president of peru was also there to greet those miners and to thank the rescue workers. those miners have been trapped since last thursday. they were given food and oxygen. it appears they are okay. >> it's good to see those pictures. sal's watching pictures of our commute. how's highway 101 doing? >> well, it's a little bit busy. northbound 101 looks good. we've been watching the commute into downtown san francisco. we've also been looking at it from the toll plaza. there's about a 10 to 15-minute delay at the bay bridge toll plaza. no major problems coming into the city westbound. there is a crash slowing you

down. northbound 85, getting a little bit slow from los gatos to saratoga and 280 is slow through the 880 interchange. let's go to steve. well, we 4 one system move off -- well, we had one system move off. cool air is filtering in. showers are already beginning to develop. it's very early for this to happen. the one system moves off. there's some develop between clayton and pittsburg but i think that's getting a little distortion from the sacramento weather service. i do buy this -- benicia martinez back to walnut creek and oakland and hayward. as i slide this from mountain view to santa cruz, things are beginning to pop up. that's a sign that the air mass is extremely unstable and already things are beginning to develop. 40s and 50s. the cooler air is in place. this could be would its a day for possible thunderstorms towards the east bay.

resume for sierra lamar. >> reporter: volunteers have been trickling in here since about 7:00 this morning. they are very hopeful. as you look around the room here in the command center, which is set up at burnett elementary school, you can see that a friend -- that friends, family, students have decorated the walls to her. there's a lot of bank. her favorite color. and volunteers are optimistic they will find something that will bring her home. over the weekend, 600 people showed up. they will be fanning out in a specific location to be determined shortly here. close to where lamarr lived. she vanished on her way to school bus stop march 16th. we spoke to one volunteer who said today he want to the give back. >> when you put this amount of people out there, you are bound

to find clues because you are covering such a wide area. you think about our law enforcement, you know, they are strapped for personnel right now. but when i can put00, 400 people out in -- 300, 400 people out in an area, you are bound to find something. >> reporter: now, police did find sierra's cell phone tossed out the close to her house and then her school books wedged between a cactus and a bush. on -- searchers found used condoms near her home. divers have combed nearby reservations in percolation ponds, cadaver dogs have scoured the area. now the family has managed to come up with a $10,000 reward for information leading to sierra's safe return. police have logged more than 6,000 hours on the case but so far no major clues.

so hopefully today, volunteers here will be instrumental in finding something that will help solve the mystery of sierra. back to you. 7:32. well, in concord, the father and daughter who were hit and killed while riding their bikes will be laid to rest. funeral services for the man and his father started a 10:00 in antioch. they were hit on saturday by a speeding suv who jumped the curb. the 17-year-old driver was released from juvenile hall yesterday. he could possibly be rearrested and charged if police determined that distracted driving caused that crash. >> i don't know how i would live with myself if that happened to me. things happen. my prayers are with the family and also with him. >> the nuri released this statement "we know this country has a just tis system put in place and -- justice system put in place and we respect it. that's why our families moved

here over 27 years ago. ." take a look at these surveillance images police say the man you see may have are set at least six vehicles on fire, the night of april 1st. investigators say he targeted cars that were unlocked, stole some valuables from them before setting them on fire. the arsons occurred in an area bordered by west third, valley west drive and fulton road. a san jose choir director has been arrested accused of spying on students during a field trip. investigators say the 27-year- old used a pen with a camera to spy on girls getting undressed in a bathroom. he has been suspended from the chorus and placed on leave from salinas high school where he's working as a choir teacher. san jose police are concerned there may be other

victims of a kung fu instructor accused of fondling students. he was arrested a few weeks ago after two students ages 9 and 11 came forward with allegations. he worked at the facility between 1999 and 2001. san jose police are asking parents to contact them if they have any concerns. coming up at 7:45, the note found in james hooker's possession that caused a judge to confiscate miss his passport. now we're learning there's video of a fatal bicycle crash in san francisco. this may help police figure out what exactly happened. the crash happened last month at castro and market streets. a bicyclist struck 71-year-old pedestrian suchi hu in a crosswalk. mr. hu later died. now, he wrote about the

accident on his blog. the chronic is reporting that evidence contradicts his story. now we have developing news coming in from los angeles. police say a man and a woman who were sitting in a car were shot to death, claudine. >> it's an apparent carjacking attack near the uc campus. the people kill resident a man and a woman in their 20s. at least one of the victims is a usc student. so far we've not heard about any arrests into at noon, the ktvu website will have a link to a long-awaited report on this pepper spraying incident at uc davis. last november, campus police pepper sprayed students demonstrating against budget cuts. an alameda county judge has approved a report to release -- an order to release that report. the report will be posted

online without the names of the officers involved. the report was scheduled to be released on march 6th. we're expecting it at noon. occupy protesters are planning a major demonstration at the beginning of next month. >> for three weeks i was living in a broken-down car. >> there were spontaneous speeches at frank ogawa plaza. it was six months ago that the demonstrations and the campouts began. but stay-away orders and the rain limb thed the turn just -- limited the turnout. >> i feel like we're just as strong as they are. >> on may 1st, occupiers plan a protest dubbed may day. local demonstrators will try to close down the port of oakland. investigators in sonoma county blame broken rental equipment for a power failure that happened sunday night.

that blackout caused the county's 911 dispatch system to crash for several hours. now, sonoma county is renting an emergency power supply system. the delivery of a new man is expected in about a month. well, starting next month, smokers, you will have a tougher time lighting up in some outdoor areas of san jose. that's because the city council passed an ordinance banning smoking in all outdoor dining areas in lines where people have to wait for service and in common areas of apartments and condos. the new law takes effect at the end of may. a group of walnut creek bar and restaurant owners say proposed new regulations would be bad for business. the proposed ordinance would require all establishments that serve alcohol to comply with nuisance-based performance standards. violaters could be forced to cut back alcohol serving times. the walnut creek hospitality group says the city should focus on adding police to keep

up with walnut creek's night scene. the city council will discuss the issue tomorrow night. george lucas' company is aban do doning plans to build -- abandoning plans to build a facility near a development that residents live. residents said it would create damage and noise. lucas says the bitterness toward this project led them to abandon the project. the chronicle says a taxi service will go from pier to pier along the waterfront and that's just in time for several events next year including the america's cup race, the anniversary of the port of san francisco, also the construction. new cruise terminal. these water taxis will be about 60 feet long and carry about 50

shooting both of them multiple times. the female was slurped forward in the car. the male managed to get out of the car and climb up onto the porch of a nearby house to get help. both of them were taken to the hospital. they died at the hospital. the suspect all we know, he's a male and he fled the scene immediately. we're not sure if he managed to get away on foot or in a car. they are canvassing this neighborhood. they are looking at surveillance video from a nearby metro station. they also have license plate trackers. they are scanning all of the license plates that came in and ought of here overnight hoping to find more information about that suspect. now, these two people were usc international students. they were both graduate students. we're told they are both from china. usc sent an alert out about this shooting overnight. in fact, they alerted their students before any of the media -- any of the media heard
