good morning. lightning really lit up bay area skies, caused quite a scare for air passengers after a plane was hit by lightning. we're out at sfo this morning. we'll tell you what you need to know before you head out the the airport. >> live in oakland, a tree comes crashing down on top of a house. >> police and sheriff deputies in modesto are still looking for a man accused of shooting and killing a sheriff deputy and civilian. we just got an update from police. we veal latest -- we'll have the latest on the investigation coming up. well, good morning. welcome to a brand new day. it's friday, april 14th. >> i'm in for pam cook.

i want to check weather and traffic. we have the giants game today. we have a lot of little league games this weekend. >> what about soccer? >> and golf? let's get our priorities right. thank you. we do have the system moving through. the good news is it looks like gulf bay and san francisco and oakland. still east bay to the south bay. i drew a line on this side. you can see there's no returns at all, really. ahead of that there still is some. we have maybe an hour and a half and then we'll start to focus in on what's coming upstream. >> we just got more crashes appear on the board. we're looking at a live picture of highway 24 on the way to oakland from lafayette and the traffic is moderate. looking at the general drive, it's going to be a little slow getting getting into the

speedway. a six-car pileup northbound, 280 at 285. let's go back to the desk. overnight system brought hail and booming thunder the bay area. we captured video of lightning strikes from our studios here in oakland. the storm created quite a show over oakland. several bolts of lightning hit the tops of the cranes at the port, which is not far from where we are. it also dumped pea-sized hail. it was hailing for about three minutes and then stopped. the time is 6:02. the roads are clear after two big trees came crashing down. ktvu's tara moriarty is in the oakland hills now to tell us the problems those downed trees

caused. tara? >> well, the public works crews have been working around the clock since this storm hit last night. they spent much of the morning removing the tree that had fallen. now, this all happened last night around 11:00 when a six story high tree toppled and crashed on a house. miraculously there was no one hurt and no damage to the home. now, when the accident happened, it appeared no one was there. the tree also snagged power lines, but electricity has been restored to most folks in the neighborhood. now, just down the road off of glen court drive. there was a power outage and blocking the street. hopefully the worst of the storm aftermath is over. whenever you get heavy rains that saturate, crews say trees are bound to topple.

it was pouring earlier and rain was gushing down the streets. people with public works say it's a good idea to pick up sandbag, especially since it is supposed to rain for the next couple of days. i'm tara moriarty. well, another sewage overflow in san francisco's mission district. yesterday we showed you flooding on folsom between 16th and 17 17th streets. overwhelmed drains forced rainwater and sewage into houses as well as businesses. this is a setback for the owner of the stable cafe who was going to have to close and clean up and disinfect everything. the city worked on the system in 2009, but that did little to prevent this latest he is. >> this area is prone to flooding. it's a natural drainage basin. the water running down the hills and ends up here. now they're piling up sandbags in front of storm fronts.

for now, business owners are nervous, waiting to see if they're in for another day of cleaning up. now, we'll have continuing storm watch coverage all morning long. you can go to our live tomorrow tracker radar at ktvu.com. we're following developments in the fatal shooting of a sheriff's deputy. huge flames shot up from an apartment house near highway 99 99. ally joins us. >> well, investigators still don't know what the suspected gunman is. he was the subject of a day long stand off near chrysler and park. it happened at an apartment complex that's about a block and a half away from where we are. behind that crime seen tape and the trailer you see in the

distance. it was just before 10:00 last night when the fire broke out where the suspected gunman had been barricaded inside. the sheriff says that fire started after deputies shot incinerator items. according to modesto police who just gave us an update. the gunman did not leave the apartment. they don't know where he is. they don't know if he's alive or deceased in that apartment building. >> era still working. the fire is -- small fires are being put out. i don't want to say it is a standoff because we still don't have that person in custody. >> now, this all started around 11:00 yesterday. that's when they were serving a

eviction notice. they struck and killed one of the officers. the civilian who was killed has not been identified. however, several neighbors told them he was a locksmith that was supposed to participate in this lockout. we got an update from them. they still will not identify who the civilian is, but they say sometime between 7 and 8:00 in the morning they will have an update. >> okay. time now, 6:07. later on today, dive teams go back into the water searching for signs of missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. today the search will be at the reservoir. yesterday, the dive teams searched and went down 60 feet. a search earlier this week using sonar equipment turned up

what they called areas of concern in the reservoir. she's been missing now for about a month. >> bart is ending the year with some extra cash, and that's good news for riders. they will use a projected search. it includes service improvements, new seats and new floors. increase in ridership has allowed them to balance the budget and bring in more money. they plan on hiring 56 new employees. time now, 6:08. you know the roads are wet. we've had a lot of rain and storms and a lot of crashes. right, sal? >> we have. in the south bay we've had them. people spinning out. five or six-car crash. cupertino at the ramp to 85 north. they're in the slow lane there. we had a crash at 280 and 17. 101, spinouts, that kind of thing. there was a spin out at

woodside. drive carefully. people drive too fast for safety and that's how they get into trouble. let's move on to live pictures. stopped raining here in san francisco. that traffic looks good. no major problems as you drive into the city. also this morning, we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. that traffic is moving well. you should check with your carrier because flights at sfo may be delayed. we're going to hear from alex coming up later on. he's going to give us the rundown on that. >> steve? >> what is it going to be like at 1:35, south of market? >> i thought you were headed up. >> yes. i'm going to say that's a go. that's a wish forecast too. does that make sense, we wish it would be okay. it would be close. i think they're going to get it

in. we're on the backside of that system. north bay, things have calmed down. there's light drizzle. same for san francisco. oakland, you can see the system move through the peninsula. most of the south bay as well, that's the good news. what's upstream is the cold core low. some of the totals really impressive. oakland almost two. sfo, 1.67. union city, an inch and a third. danville, two inches of rain. san francisco, that's mike polanski. now has 2.62 for the month. that's 164% of normal for the month. we still have two and a half weeks to go. castro valley, 1.60. san jose and santa rosa picked up 2. we have one part and now the next part is moving east. thunderstorms are likely. this will be the coolest day by

hazmat crews checked the air. they did not find any chemicals. >> 6:14. in syria today, thousands of protesters marriaged protesters -- marched the streets. we're hearing supports security forces did shoot some of the protesters. at least three protesters were killed. a team of united nations observers is now ready to enter syria is the council approves the mission later today. despite international condemnation, north korea launch launched a long range rocket, but it didn't go very far. it crashed into the sea. now, the reaction and the backlash against north korea this morning. >> in less than an hour, the

u.s. security council will be holding a security season on how to punish north korea on a ban of missile technology. that's what many believe it was doing when they launched this long range rocket. u.s. officials confirm it broke apart shortly after. there have been two past failed rocket launches, but this is the first time north korea publicly acknowledged the favor. could this be a crisis for that country's new leader? >> i don't think it will affect the leadership of kim jong-il. what has the world worried? what could happen next. past rocket failures were followed by underground nuclear test. it's a way to save face after such humiliation. the rogue nation faces punishment from the u.n. what

that could be coming up in the next hour. live in washington. carol han, channel 2 ktvu news. now investigating the death of two coast guard members on an island. the two were found shot to death at their work area inside the kodiak station. so far no suspects have been identified. east palo alto police are investigating a shooting. a 19-year-old was shot last night. police say someone in a dark chevy drove up to the victim and started shooting. the victim told police he ran home, realized he had been shot, and then went to the hospital. police are still searching for suspects. >> the family of a man that was killed outside his home will host a press conference. the family is expected to

announce the legal process. they say police were slow to respond to the deadly beating. well, president obama flies to latin america. this is a three-day trip. he'll stop in tampa bay florida this morning. he'll be highlighting the benefits of trade with north america. paying the city millions of dollars over the next several years. in exchange, facebook wants the city to double the maximum number of employees allowed by the city. the city council will vote on the plan on tuesday. >> time is 6:18. part of an effort to save money involves munni making passengers wait longer.

good morning. right now we're looking at westbound 24. looks pretty good here in lafayette. looks like it's dried ochoa bit for the trip to oakland, but there are traffic trouble spots. we'll tell you where they are. two men are in a hospital after a strange accident on a san francisco freeway. look at that car. a wheel came off the car and crashed through the windshield of that honda civic. the two people inside the civic were hurt. thomas kinkade's brother is talk about his brother's downward spiral and death. he abused alcohol to -- he says thomas got better and went on a relapse and went on a drinking binge right before he died.

threats to sue the city over restrictions. they proceeded with rules to crack down on problem businesses. they include making those businesses operate on a conditional use permit. some of the owners say they're not part of the problem and they're being unfairly punished. well, comcast is apologizing after hard core pornography was shown in the middle of good morning america on a station in colorado. this a statement, comcast says the mistake was a result of human error which has been resolved and the company has taken measures to prevent this from happening in the future. the student run newspaper at berkeley is in jeopardy. there was a ballot measure asking students to pay $2 a semester to keep it alive.

airport. alex savage is telling us what happened and what passengers today can expect. >> reporter: last night the lightning storm forced the plane headed to london to turn around and return to sfo. we'll show you video of that storm from last night. we saw lightning in oakland and other parts of the bay area. that was a boeing 777 that was struck by lightning just before 8:00 last night. the captain elected to return to sfo where that plane landed safely. no emergency was declared and no one was hurt. those passengers will be put on another plane today. michael o'neil from san francisco wrote, everyone is okay. back in sf, surrounded by lightning. i was told it's not uncommon for planes to get hit by lightning. they're made to withstand the

lightning strikes. the airport representative tells me there's the possibility of more delays depending on storms today. we're live at sfo, alex savage, channel 2 news. cutting power to dozens of evidence. look at this large tree around 11:00. it did take down power lines lines with it and landed on a roof of a home. no one was hurt and the home was not damaged. the same area that happened along glen court drive. pg&e had to cut power to that entire street before beginning repairs. power has been restored to most people out there. pg&e has tried to work to restore power to customers in the east bay. about 15 minutes ago. 720 customers in concord are

sheriff's deputy and civilian. investigators still don't know if he's dead or alive. this all happened at an apartment four plex. in the distance you can see the apartment building is still smoldering this morning. that's where the suspect was last seen. it's smoldering from a fire started last night. the sheriff says the fire started after sheriff's deputies shot devices into the apartment to try to flush the suspected gunman out of the building. as far as the deputies know, the gunman did not leave the apartment. they don't know where he is, if he's alive or deceased in the department. >> we don't have the suspect in custody. there's small fires being put out. our suspect is still outstanding. so i still don't want to say it's not a standoff because we do not have that person in custody. >> this all started yesterday.

that's when they were serve an eviction notice to the suspect. he shot and killed robert paris, a 16--year veteran of the force. he's survived by his parents and two children. >> deputy paris was my deputy and friend. we were para medics before we got into law enforcement together. he was doing his job. he paid the ultimate price. >> now, the gunman shot and killed a civilian that was also taking part in that eviction. several neighbors said that civilian was a locksmith. part of the eviction that started the standoff yesterday, modesto police are investigating. they said they're waiting to go inside that apartment building to see if the suspect may be inside. they're waiting for the building to stop smoldering so

it's safe for fire investigators to go in. >> 6:36. in new hampshire, a police chief is dead. four other soldiers were hurt. this happened in a little town of greenland. the suspect was held up in a house with the woman until early this morning. a police robot was sent in and found them both dead in the house about 2:00 a.m. two of the injured officers are in intensive care. the other two were treated and released. it was just a couple of days away. >> the killing of a vallejo police officer,. officer capu was shot while chasing smith after a bank was robbed. >> police in san jose facing new charges of racial profiling. officers may be forcing african-

americans, latinos, and other minorities to sit on street curbs after traffic stops. now they want you to document the race of every person told to curb sit and told the reason for the traffic stop. also wear small cameras on their uniforms to record everything that happens during those stops. >> right now, we're like, snow is falling. sierra, more than a foot of pressed snow has fallen. right now a winter storm warning is in effect. that's expected to last until 8:00 tonight. if you're headed up there, you should know that right now they're required to just past truckky. drivers will need change from chiiers to meyers. >> you're dealing with stuff out there.

how are we looking? >> we still have roadway flooding and a couple of things that are associated with the storm that just moved through. you can see the sky is much clearer than it was when steve and i began work this morning at 4:30. it was almost like it was yesterday at 4:30, raining pretty hard and driving was tough. now, like yesterday, it's dried up a bit and traffic has become much better. still a little windy on that plan, getting into san francisco. so i guess it does pay off to wait a little bit. today, traffic volume is going to be a little lighter, as it usually is on a friday. moving along to the south bay. that's where all the problems are. it's been raining there last. at 280, there's flooding and a couple of incidents at cupertino. if you drive through there, slow down. you may not be able to see the

last night the huge flames shot into the sky from an apartment house where the shooting suspect was believed to be holed up. now, as of this moment, it's still not clear if that suspect is still inside or if he was hurt or even killed in that fire. a health advisory is rodeo has now been lifted. it was issued overnight because of a fire at the conoco phillips oil refinery. residents living near the refinery were warned that hazardous materials may be in the air. the testing proved that was not the case. >> and more thunderstorms and hail, maybe lightning, possibly around the bay area today. we had some pretty wild winter, as you know. last night, lightning hit a jet and forced it to return to sfo. luckily, no one was hurt. it could be a wet home opener for the giants when they face the pittsburgh pirates today.
