>> i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. >> it's friday, april 13th. the bay area is still recovering from unusually severe weather overnight. that included hundreds of lightning strikes. we're at san francisco international airport where you just spoke with the duty manager about a scare passengers. he said everyone is okay. sitting on the runway, back in sf, surrounded by lightning. this was a boeing 747 that took off 8:00. at last count, 750 lightning

strikes were reported. the plane was struck by lightning. that's when the captain chose to return to sfo as a precaution. an airport spokesperson told me a short time ago, there was no emergency declared and no one was hurt on the aircraft. >> the airlines -- they will come back. safety. the passengers were put into hotels and they will be debarting on a flight. >> maintenance workers checked it out. the airport spokesperson i spoke to said there was no damage by the lightning strike.

as of right now, there are no delays reported here at sfo. but with more storms possible throughout the day, the airport spokesman i talked to a short time ago tell -- tells me if they do get severe storms and more lightning, there is a possibility that the flights could be delayed. we're live this morning. back to you. the storm dumped pea-sized hail in pacifica. there was even a brief half- hour tornado warning for thousands living on the san mateo coast who were alerted by the emergency broadcast system. two trees crashed down in the oakland hills temporarily cutting power to dozens of residents. a large tree fell across shepherd canyon at 11:00. >> it took down power lines and landed on the roof of a home. no one was hurt and the home

results. a report from the budget analyst office identified 68 so- called surplus buildings. they report the handgunment being "dysfunctional with a lot of errors." yesterday, the b.a.r.t. transit agency said they will use a surplus of $30 million to $35 million in upgrades. this includes new seats and floors and increase in sales tax and revenue have allowed them to balance the budget and bring in more money. >> hopefully passengers will like that. >> yeah. hey, sal, do we like what's happening on highway 24? >> well, we like that this crash did not cause serious injuries.

rain totals. 1.83. for april, 2.62 which is 164% of normalle we still have a couple of weeks to go. for the season, 18.22 which is only 70% of normal. yearly average is 26.23. yet, of that 18.22, nearly 9 inches of rain has fallen since march 1st. so i mean, that deserves a wow. we waited for rain for december, january, february. once we got to march and april, here we are. the one system is flying up in the sierra. winter storm warning goes until tonight. most of this from last night. oakland had almost 2. union city 1.15. danville, almost 2. castro valley, 1.60.

there's been an advisory up in lake county. i'm focusing our attention to the north because that's the low that has to drop in and that's the last part of the energy in this current pattern as things start to change. the heavy rain moving out to the valley. the low drops down and that will give us an active pattern. some sun but that will give -- 40s on the temperatures. temperatures should be between 63 and 70. we'll be lunge to get out of the 70s -- lucky to get out of the 70s. things will calm down and we'll see more sunshine. rain giving way to mostly cloudy skies. there will still be some more rain coming down from the north later on. things are just primed and used and ready to go. we'll be positive and say they will get the game in. hopefully the rain will be around the area but not over the ballpark.

the voters -- for the voting. we'll have more, obviously, on this as we continue "mornings on 2." 7:09. we're following dramatic overnight developments. it involves the fatal shooting of a sheriff's deputy and another man in modesto. ktvu news was on the scene last night when huge flames filled the sky from a burning apartment house near highway 99. now, at the time, s.w.a.t. teams believe the suspect was holed up inside the apartment house. it's still not clear if the suspect is still in that apartment or if he was hurt or killed in the fire. early this morning, the county sheriff told us that flash bang devices as well as tear gas probably started the fire. >> we believe the fire was started probably because the s.w.a.t. teams introduced gas and other independent send airy devices into the apartment -- incendiary devices to into the

apartment. >> deputy robert paris was killed as he tried to serve an eviction notice. paris was a 16-year veteran of the aunt. the other man reported -- of the apartment. the other man was reportedly a locksmith. well, the oldest lapd mark -- landmark in contra costa county has been vandalized. today it's abandoned and covered with graffiti. the doors have been stolen along with the bronze plaque designating it as a landmark. there a few years ago, there was protection of the land from developer. 7:11. spectacular failure. what's happening this morning after north korea's highly

possible -- mentioned as a possible future candidate for governor. he will be getting rest and recovering at this point today. it's 7:15. east palo alto police are investigating an overnight shooting. a 19-year-old was shot and injured just before 10:00 last night on poplar avenue. police say someone in a dark chevy broke up to the victim and started shooting. the victim told police he ran home, realized he had been shot and went to the hospital. police are still searching for suspects. a man fatality shot by los angeles police officers had wanted to pursue a care roo in law enforcement according to the "l.a. times" he was shot and killed on highway 101 in woodland hills yesterday after leading police on a chase. during the pursuit, he called 911. according to transcripts, he claimed to have a gun and threaten police. no gun was found at the scene.

you heard the suspect mention is still unclear. he's believed to have a military background. the sheriff would not identify him for us but he did say this suspect did have some sort of criminal record. he was arrested in 2000. but again, a briefing is supposed to take place sometime in the next hour. as soon as we get her -- more information, we'll bring it to you. >> thank you for the update. well, pat burrell is retiring from baseball. pat the bat will sign a one-day contract with the team that drafted him back in 1998. now, he spent nine seasons with the phillies. he won another championship with the giants. today is the giants' home opener. giants set a record for selling

shoot into the apartment building but at this point, yeahs -- investigators don't know what happened to that suspected gunman. you are looking at the apt complex where the suspect was believed to have barricaded himself. other things, investigators are still looking in to, they've not identified for us the civilian who was killed. the guy believed to be working at a locksmith. the identity of the suspect is not being released. he's believed to have a military background according to the sheriff that we spoke to yesterday, he did have an arrest record. the suspect did. he was arrested in 2000. although the sheriff would not say what he was arrested for. but at this point, fire investigators and police are still waiting for the structural integrity -- integrity of this building before they can go in and check

if the suspect is inside. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. more bad weather kented to hit the -- expected to hit the bay area today. we're live at the san francisco international airport where lightning hit a plane filled with passengers. >> reporter: good morning, dave. there was no emergency declared on board that plane that just left sfo. but out of an abundance, i was told, the passenger told me the captain decided to turn around. it happened around 8:00 last night after a severe round of storms that hit the -- that hit the bay area. there were 750 strikes reported in the region. the united airlines flight with 250 passengers on board was jolted. the plane turned around and made an unscheduled landing at sfo. luckily, no one was hurt.

the owners of the sacramento kings, the mayor of sacramento and the nba commissioner will meet today in new york. this comes as kevin johnson wrote a letter to the maloof family which owns the sacramento kings saying the city will not renegotiate the proposed arena deal. the city and the team reached a tentative deal last month to fund the arena and also keep the kings in sacramento. the sacramento city council has already passed its end of the deal. the l.a. dodgers are trying to get out of bankruptcy a lot faster. the team has a new reorganization plan that might let them get out of bankruptcy by the -- by the end of the month. the comers -- the dodgers expect the judge to okay the

apartment building house. >> reporter: you can see the building is still smoldering and parked out in front -- parked out in front of it is the suspect's vehicle, the suv parked out with the windows in the middle of the street. now, that's a stream -- an active crime scene set out here. investigators will be expanding the crime scene. a lot of people in the neighborhood are coming out to see and they want to see this scene clear. a fire broke out last night after sheriff deputies threw tear gas in the building to try to get a-suspect barricaded inside the building out. the police don't know if the suspect died in the fire, before the fire, at this point they don't believe the community is in any danger because they said they never saw this man leave the area.
