a mixed bag of all types of weather in the bay area. don't let this live view fool you. more interesting things are coming. we'll have the weather story in just a moment. good afternoon. i'm tory campbell. we begin with breaking news out of oakland this morning where a man with a gun has holed up inside a hotel. news chopper 2 is live over the scene at jack lemon square. police say that a man carrying

a tech 9 assault pistol ran into the jack london inn just about 30 minutes ago. he is described as a white man with long hair wearing a gray hooded jacket or sweatshirt. police say they believe the man is inside a stairwell and that he has a friend living in the hotel. officers had set up a perimeter around the building and shut down the hotel elevators. we have a crew on the scene and we'll bring you an update as soon as possible. tears live pictures of newschannel 2 of jack london inn at jack london square. we'll have more update as soon as we get more information. we are back on storm watch. the storms dropped not just rain but hail. there were no report of any damage in east san jose.

mark tamayo is here with more details. but first, we start with alex. >> reporter: well, pediatricment is closed here because of this mudslide that has come across the roadway here. they just brought in a crane a short time ago to try to clear away some of this debris that came down the hillside >> it's also possible there is a home up this hill to the right that could be on unstable ground right now. this slide, just one of many problems that we saw across the bay area area. >> reporter: the driver of this struck rolled through some heavy area right now. >> it was like a river. the water was high as maybe-- maybe the car door. >> reporter: the storm also took down a pair of large trees along shepherd canyon road in the oakland hills. one tree came to rest on top of the house but the place was not damaged and no one was hurt.

there were several fallen trees in that aim sarah that knocked out power to dozens of people. along with lots of rain, these storms also brought lightning. according to the lightning detection network, we had only 750 separate strikes in or near the bay area. in fact, a united airline flight was jolted by lightning shortly after takeoff from sfo. the boeing 777 was bound for london but the pilot decided to turn that plane around and landed back at sfo. >> airlines usually err on the side of caution. they decided to get back to sfo. but not in an emergency so it was not that severe. >> reporter: several streets in piedmont were shut down because of lightning that knocked down several trees on top of power lines. it's unclear if any homes have

been damaged but a city spokesman calls this a major supplied slide. pg&e crews have just come in and deenergized the power lines knocked down by the trees. you can see there are work crews down there right now and they are chopping up one of those trees. again, it's possible there is a home up that hill that has been damaged in this mudslide from early this morning. live this afternoon in piedmont, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. downed power lines are also causing problems for dozens of people in concord. 4500 pg&e customers were in the darkness due to downed trees on power lines. most of the power was restored overnight but electricity for about 350 customers will not be

restored until later this afternoon. right now, a variety of weather elements out there some sunshine, some clouds, even a few showers. let's go back in time, though, about 15 hours ago. this was the main event with that heavy rain and the thunderstorm, the light show pushing into parts of the bay area. as alex mentioned, around 750 lightning strikes through 2:00. you can see the activity moving out to the north and east earlier this morning. as far as rainfall totals, also very impressive. oakland, 1.89. san jose at 1.79. we picked up these totals in a three-hour period late thursday evening. right now on live storm tracker, can you see the coverage. not widespread. but still some scattered showers. parts of the east bay right now just to the north and east of danville and also some scattered activity right around sausalito, the central portions of the bay and we'll shift them

near l.a. 99. allie rasmus is there now to let us know what is going on >> reporter: investigators are going door to door to find out more information. this standoff is about a block away from us behind all these law enforcement vehicles parked on the streets. this is all that's left of that apartment building. it burned down last night after the standoff. we are learning more about the man who lived here. investigators won't release his name to us but his next door neighbor described him as militant, reserved and paranoid. he said his neighbor had surveillance cameras mounted on top of all his windows as well as guns and a target practice bull's eye in his garage. >> he had a fascination with things that were a little bit more hostile. on his car, he had a target sign. he wrote on it, trespassers will be shot and killed. >> reporter: the scene began at

11:00 a.m. monday when to two stanislaus deputies and a civilian tried to evict him. a deputy and the civilian were killed. there was a standoff. police lobbed tear gas. no one knows what happened to the man. nobody was seen getting out. because the building is still will smoldering, they can't go in. is the suspect dead? >> we don't want to confirm that. >> reporter: the deputy killed is robert parris, a 16-year veteran of the police department. investigators will be out here for the rest of the day and possibly into tomorrow morning. the people who live in all these homes within the crime scene still can't go back to

their homes this morning. live in modesto, allie rasmus, ktvu. dive team are searching for missing teen. they searched the reservoir going 16 feet down. a search earlier this week using sonar equipment turned up what they called areas of concerns in the reservoir. sierra lamar has been missing for about a month. paramedics rushed to menda way. the toddler was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead. police have not released information on the child's gender or what caused the death. homicide detectives are now waiting for the results of an autopsy. the attorney for the man accused of murdering trayvon martin says he will seek bail for his client at a hearing scheduled for one week from

today. 28-year-old george zimmerman made his first appearance in a florida court yesterday but did not enter a plea. right now, he is being held without bail. also, the judge appointed to handling the case said she might have a conflict of interest. her husband is a television legal analyst whom zimmerman first approached to represent him. san jose plays are police are forcing new charges of racial profiling. they say that african americans, latinos and other minority are forced to sit on the curb more often. the officers must now record the race of those stops and wear a small camera to record everything that happens. now it is important to speak out for him and for

the family of a man killed outside of his berkeley hills home is speaking out about the police response to calls for help. the family responding to what they call inaccurate information from berkeley police. department claims that kukar called a nonemergency number to report a trespasser. the family says that is not true and accuses the police of being slow to his call for help before he was beaten to death. >> father called the correct berkeley police department emergency number. this is the one listed on their website as the best number to call in case of immediate threats to life or property. >> the suspect in the killing, 23-year-old daniel dewitt of alameda was ruled mentally

5:00 from the game. >> thank you, tara. >> some san francisco muni passengers are having to wait longer for the bus according to the bay citizens. the sf mta has stopped paying overtime to replace drivers who call in sick. instead, they let the buses sit in the yard. on average, eight buses a day don't make their runs. the practice began two weeks ago in an effort to curb overtime cost and close a projected $29 million gap. the opposite situation for b.a.r.t. which has a surplus. the transit agency says they will use that projected 30 to $35 million surplus on upgrades, including service improvement, new seats and new floors increases in ridership and sales tax revenues have allowed them to balance benefits on bring in more money. governor jerry brown this morning invoked the spirit of

arnold schwartz telling the legislature to, quote, man up and make spending cuts. the governor made the comment on san francisco radio station kgo. brown admitted the deficit is probably bigger now than his earlier estimate of $9.2 billion. he urged lawmakers to, quote, man up, make some cuts and raise taxes. governor schwarzenegger called democratic lawmakers girly men during his tenure. and council member is denying she send out a message for help. the message stated she can no longer stand the torture and harassment of an ex-lawyer who she says beat her in a motel room two months ago. the same message blames her husband, california treasure bill lockyer for getting her hooked on drugs, a charge that

her office denied. as for the e-mail, nadia lockyer says that she is fine and that her ex-boyfriend hacked into her e-mail. ross mirkarimi tells the bay citizen that the plea came during an argument with his wife during a car ride when he says that lopez did not want him to turn his car around when they were driving to lunch. mickmirkarimi claims that it was his failure to turn around that led to the charges. more snow has come down in the last 24 hours. there is a winter storm warning until 8:00 p.m. if you go out there, bring the

chains. chains requirements have been in effect. we have an active weather pattern over the past few days. still a little bit of everything, sunshine, clouds, gusty winds looking out towards san francisco, of course, we are always concerned with the opening day weather. it is chilly out there with temperatures in the 50s and winds around 15 to 25 miles per hour. this is a neat camera, looking out towards the field, right on the field view here. you can see some of the clouds out in the distance but very nice shot. nice to see the sunshine making a comeback. but we cannot rule out the chance of a shower. here is the forecast at at&t park this afternoon. cool and breezy temperatures, only at 54 degrees and there is that chance of a shower. right now on live storm tracker, you can see the coverage right now with some activity approaching the bay, right around angel island and you can see san francisco. not a lot to show you. more activity in oakland and also drifting to the south, right around san leandro right

now. let's back this up. most areas just dry, but still some scattered showers around the region and we could see an increase in the coverage, right now, the main focus in the south bay, right around morgan hill, closer to 101. oakland right now, 55. santa rosa, 54 and livermore, 54 degrees. a little bit of everything, once again. sunshine, passing clouds and a chance of some showers and with, that the possibility of a thunderstorm. of course, this is the activity that moves through the many region earlier, late last night into this morning. still a bit unstable for today, but into the pacific, we have a dry trying trend and a warming trend as well. this weekend will be warmer. here is the forecast model. and here ace chance of picking up some more precipitation. drifting closer to fair field,

wall street on track to end the week lower. more concerns about spain's debt. the dow down, 67. nasdaq down 311. s&p down 10. the labor department says that the consumer price index rose .3% in march, down .10 from april. amists say one reason is that gasoline prices rose more slowly last month. excluding the usually volatile food and gas price, the core inflation rate was .2%. consumer prices have gone up 2.7% in the past 12 months. we are following some breaking news out of contra costa county where emergency crews are on the scene of a dog attack in martinez. this is a live look at the scene just a few details are being released. the sheriff department says that a three-year-old child was mauled by a pitbull about 45 minutes ago. it happened at a home on the
