-- this is about 8:00 when the severe thunderstorm warning went up for the area. that's a big deal. we don't get a lot of those along the peninsula. here we go in to the evening, little further down the road and we get more showers in to the san jose area. 750 lightning strikes. the activity has moved out of the area. we are concerned today -- that we would see severe weather in the valley, toward napa, toward antioch. the instability not as great as anticipated. by napa on the way -- you have a cell showing moderate rain. if you look at these have you to go out to modesto to find something with legs, orange and red. there have been reports of thunderstorms in the central valley but things have died down. lots of rain last flight in a short amount of time. ly go to matt now he is in piedmont. they have a lost rain. >> reporter: yeah and it caused a big mess here. the tree work is done right now. pg&e is working on getting power restored to some of the

nearby neighbor who had the power knocked out when the mudslide happened. there is a big pile of mud in the middle of the avenue. workers concerned its supporting the hillside more mud would slide down if removed. this hill in piedmont came down at about 7:00 creating a frightening wake up call for neighbors. >> like -- bang. >> reporter: it sounded like a -- brush, you know, maybe elephant. a tree crashed into a power line, nobody was hurt but it did create inconvenience knocking out power to about 50 neighbors and blocking the avenue, a major artery for people going 580 or highway 15. >> we want to get it opened as quickly as possible but make sure it's safe. >> reporter: giant tree was floating through the air. neighbors say they were concerned about mudslide when's the house above the road was built. >> if we don't have the proper

drainage then it's a potential for landslides. >> reporter: a structural engineer. he said i contacted the city during the build and suggested water drainage should be included. he said the home can be built on top of the hill lying like this but needs to be designed main tenned. >> that's why anybody who owns the home in the hillside, they better clean up their gutters and leaves. >> reporter: a city spokesperson said two engineers have determined the house is safe to live in for now. it's expected to be closed until at least tomorrow afternoon. reporting live in piedmont. >> fallen tree barely missed this home in contra costa. we caught sight of crews work doing remove the brain muchs, you can see part of the tree route was up end ended. >> crews rushed to keep up with power outages and equipment failures last night's

storm. at least 25,000 customers lost power as the lightning bolts brought down wires and fried at least 25 pieces of pg&e equipment along the peninsula. the utility said that the equipment alone was hit by lightning 162 times. . >> last night's lightning struck a jet liner bound for england. not long after takeoff. new at six tom spoke to passengers about the frightening moments on board. >> reporter: as they prepared to depart the passengers described last night's scary events. >> i was watching the lightning strikes thinking, maybe we shouldn't be taking off. >> reporter: a half hour later like this video of a similar incident passengers saw. >> huge flash just outside the window. huge bang. >> and then everybody screamed. the oxygen masks dropped. it was very scary.

the body found inside the burned home is that of the gunman. investigators, the bomb squad and a dog spent a second day collecting evidence from what was left of the two story apartment. the home went up in flames last night as police tried to flush out a gunman who killed a deputy and civilian as they tried to serve the eviction notice. >> i was shocked. i. >> reporter: ashley and her 2- year-old son were among the dozens forced to evacuate. neighbors say that the man who lived here worked as a security guard and kept to himself. >> he had different types of firearms, he had in his garage a loading dock for ammunition and repairing his firearms. he had tactical equipment. vest, gas mask, boots. >> reporter: others described him as paranoid saying he had surveillance cameras outsides windows and a bulls eye for target practice in the garage. dozens of folks nearby were

evacuated yesterday for safety concerns, police trying to get all of them back in by later tonight. we are live in modesto. ktvu channel 2news. >> two fugitives arrested after a three hourlong standoff at a oakland hotel. swat teams rushed to the jack london inn around noon when a man and woman ran in to the hotel. police vacant -- evacuated the guests and staff. the two were wanted for kidnapping assaulting a man. >> differs out in a reservoir searching for clues in the disappearance of sierra lamor . sonar equipment detected eight areas in the reservoir that they wanted to check. nothing was found today. another volunteer ground search for the missing girl is scheduled for this weekend. >> the governor today told state lawmakers to man up and

pass his proposed budget cuts. he urged them to pass the plan he proposed in january which includes billions in cuts to state services. he said the budget deficit is likely going to exceed the $9.2 billion short fall predicted earlier. ? >> the governor's push to make cuts in social service program social security premature and he promised the legislature will do what it has to balance the budget. >> real impact on peoplef. we have to make them we will. last resort, not a first. >> he said lawmakers have made billions of dollars in cuts in education and other programs in recent years, he said he wants to see if the april tax receipts bring more money in to the state. >> tea party protesters planning on taking their message to satisfy. the group said it'll flood justin herman plaza.
