adjacent roof. winds between 65 and 85 mi per hour. it's the second to have nay doe in northern california this week. on wednesday another twister touched down outside of stockton. around the bay area today people have been cleaning up at a spring storm brought thunder and lightning to the region. the national service counted 750 lightning strikes. a bolt hit a plane leaving , prompting the plane to return. the hail was described as the sign of bbs.

there was even flooding. streets were under water. too much water at one time could harm the -- ktvu's amber lee live in piedmont on moraga avenue where things are improving though that road is still blocked. >> reporter: gasia, a spokesman for the city of piedmont told us this stretch of moraga will reopen tomorrow afternoon. we want to show you where the mud slide -p happened makes a mess. shaw and his family told us the power went out shortly before 7:00 this morning so candles and flash flights were quickly put to use. the slide is directly across the street from the shaw home.

the deadly stand off in modesto we were reporting for most of the yesterday has ended. once the flames were out a body was found inside. the owner was 45-year-old james ferrario the condo owner. the sheriff's department went to evict him yesterday after he reportedly fell behind on his mortgage. there was a shoot out and a deputy and lock smith were killed. we now know the name of the lock smith, his name was glen

stuff. and that alone i can feel horrible and be upset about it but when you think about the people who lost their lives and their families it's really hard to feel upset about that. >> reporter: a representative with the red cross telling me u.s. tonight that sheter -- shelter has been shut down. tonight the red cross is paying for hotels for 14 people until they can get back into their home. in seven minutes a suspect search in oakland today blocked traffic for hours. and why the person arrested looked nothing like who police were looking for. police are asking for the public's help tonight for whoever shot a man while he was walking his dog in the hills. this car was used in the shooting which took place about 10:30 on the 700 block of

everton. anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact oakland police. the solano county coroners released the identity of a man shot to death wednesday outside of a bar. tyrone lacy died shortly before 10:00 wednesday night outside perk's place bar and grill on parker road. another man shot in the head is reported to be in stable condition. investigators say the shooting happened after an argument between two groups of men. there's no word of any suspects or arrests in the case. santa clara county sheriff's team took to the water for a second day searching for signs of missing teenager sierra lamar. divers were in the reservoir looking for any signs that may lead them to the teenager. today's rain made the search more challenging. >> the darker it is outside, the darker it is in the water. and we lose any visibility we

may have. >> so far the under water search has turn up nothing. authorities in santa cruz county are surging people to use extra cause after a 6-year- old girl died yesterday following an accident on the beach. it happened in the beach area. the girl was play on the sand when a wave brought in a log and knocked her down. she later died at the hospital. the bay area is still buzzing over the extraordinary lightning that electrified the sky last night as ktvu's david stevenson reports, mother nature's special effects left some afraid. >> reporter: rain brought

seven new officers were sworn in at the oakland police department today. some applies for jobs several years ago but budget issues delayed their hiring. they'll be on probation for one year. the search for a kidnapping suspect took oakland police to an inn at jack london square in afternoon. they ultimately got their man but as ktvu's christien kafton shows us, that man tried to fool police into thinking he was a she. >> reporter: oakland police arrested parolee ronaldo marte wearing a black shirt, a brown skirt and shades. >> the suspect did change clothes, he changed into

woman's clothing. they did try to disguise his appearance to evade police detection. >> reporter: marte and his acome prince, amanda pearce kidnapped a 58-year-old man last month -- marte and his accomplice. >> there was information he did not want the victim to give us as a result he kidnapped him. >> reporter: they found marte in his car and chased him to the inn. >> they asked if i had seen a man dressed as a woman. i said no because i had just my room for a second. they pulled me out into the fire escape and they told me to leave. >> reporter: police cornered marte into a hoe hoe -- hotel room and talked him into giving up. police say marte has a history of carrying guns. >> great that he's off the

streets. we're very happy. >> reporter: the incident brought traffic to a halt. it also brought train service to a halt for hours. christien kafton. fire officials in oakland say a three alarm fire could be arson. it start out at an auto repair shot. dozens of firefighters put it out in about half an hour. police arrested a woman at the scene. a witness told ktvu he saw a woman burning clothes in a barrel and that the fire spread to the building. pacific gas and electric has paid the city $750 million in reparations for the deadly pipeline explosion. the money is in addition to a trust fund set up by pg & e to pay for neighborhood repairs. city officials will decide how to spend it. the explosion killed eight

lightning strikes from this latest storm and the stanford linear was on the receiving end of it. >> reporter: we're at the slat where the skies are quiet right now and the fury has ended but this facility was a victim of lightning strike. the power was just restored about three hours ago after a lightning strike hit a transmission line knocking out the power at 11:00 last night. a lot of people are remembering the night when the skies lit up. >> the lightning just lit up the whole sky it was crazy. then i had to drive down the 101 to get back home and it was storming and lightning struck pretty much every five minutes. >> flying you know different directions. but i saw it striking in the

mountains in san francisco. >> i saw the bolt come down a couple of times but most of the time i didn't really see it. i just saw a bright light. >> reporter: we're told 400 people were working at plat last night, when the light suddenly went out. there were no injuries or incidents but everything was shut down. but now even with the power restored it will just take time to resume operations. >> you can't take the very complex scientific which i equipment we have here and just take a flip and turn it back on. there's issues of safety, there's issues of making sure we don't cause damage. >> reporter: pg & e said a lightning bolt can carry 1 billion bolts in contrast, slat requires 23 mega watts of power
