2". >> welcome to "mornings on 2". i am claudine wong. i am erik rasmussen in for mike mibach. we will go over to rosemary orozco for a look at how warm it is going to get. >> partly cloudy skies. upper 50s to low 60s. patchy fog and low level on shore breeze has brought in the clouds as well. some of us are mostly cloudy. we will see who is looking at the patchy fog and the numbers expected for the afternoon, coming up. we are following developing news where the coast guard is resuming its search for four missing sailors who haven't within seen since an accident yesterday. it happened around a race on the fair -- farallon islands. four are still missing. and allie rasmus joins us live with new video of the rescue

operation and the plan for today. this is the coast guard cutter pike. it is going to be searching out for a searching and rescue and possibly recovery mission. it was a fairalon islands: three of them were rescued yesterday. the sailors on the crashed yacht were hoisted up on to the rescued helicopters and brought to safety. unfortunately, the body of a sailor was also recovered. one person is confirmed dead. this morning, they will resume the search for four other sailors on the boat who are still missing. the boat crashed 26 miles west of the golden gate bridge. they have put resources into the search and rescue. one coast guard cutter is headed out to sea.

the other one out here live, this is a u.s. coast guard cutter pike. this is headed out this morning. two helicopters from the air national guard that are going out to sea to continue looking for the four, still missing sailors on the yacht involved in the accident. we will continue to be out here and get more information from the coast guard representatives in an hour from now. live here on verba buena island. allie rasmus. channel 2 news. that happened at 10:00 at market and sanchez streets. the blaze may have started in the kitchen the the fire went quickly to two alarms. some 50 firefighters helped put out the flames. they were told someone was in the apartment and couldn't get out. >> the victim was deep in the fire unit itself. fire block with a hose had to be put in place for the fire in the kitchen. they had to contain that and get by the fire and make the

rescue inside. >> the woman was taken to san francisco general hospital with critical injuries. a firefighter suffered a small finger cut. the red cross is now helping displaced residents find temporary shelter. no word on what caused the fire. >> happening was just restored to thousands in oakland who lost power. a transmission error at 4:30 this morning made it that much darker. 3800 people were effected until they fixed the glitch. one was our own photographer. chris paxton, he got stuck in the elevator for two hours on his way to work. he is okay and he is now at work. tornado in oklahoma killed five people early this morning. this is the type of violent weather people in oklahoma have been dealing with. storm chaser caught this multi

vortex tornado yesterday. five deaths and several injuries were recorded in the town of woodward. tornado sirens were working yesterday and were not apparently working when the deadly tornado hit. >> strong storms like this lightning storm were reported in kansas, iowa and nebraska. national weather service said conditions were ripe for tornadoes last night. many people were sleeping. people were in the base. a mobile home park was heavily damaged and no injuries or deaths were reported there. we have a reporter in iowa and we will have a live look at the damages there. >> coming up at 7:15. >> the victim of a mass murder will be laid to rest early this morning. five people were found in a house across from city college. four people of the lei family were killed by blunt force

trauma. today's procession will begin in san francisco and end at the cemetery. we are told san francisco ed lee and some supervisors are expected to attend the services. the suspect is being held on $1 million bail. a while is in the custody of child protective services. she was found alone in a car. san jose police are trying to figure out hue and if the child is connected to the victims. a body was discovered on east capitol expressway and the women's body was o 20 yards away between two cars. there is a mark. >> i saw the markings, the body was laying down here. >> the legs were this way and face this way. there was blood on the case. >> they do believe the child is related to one of the victims. the names are not being

today marks the 100th anniversary of the titanic. they held a moment of silence at the time of the sinking and they laid a wreath. some of the passengers had ties to the titanic. one woman said it is the closest she ever felt to her grandfather. it is almost as though while i was here, he was alive for me. and i can now, i can let it go. the memorial cruise is following the same route of the ill-fated titanic route. same food, music as the original voyage. this is the remains of a coat and boots. the way these clothes are laid out makes a case where the passenger actually came to rest. this is another picture of a

mike mibach. >> the focus is on four sailors who are still missing. allie rasmus has more on the search efforts. allie? >> reporter: well the search efforts are going to start with this boat docked next to us. this is the u.s. coast guard cutter pike. we will see 17 people get on board and they are going to head west of the golden gate bridge near the accident site. now the coast guard spots anyone in the water. they will be using the small boats tucked into the deck. they will use those to go out and help rescue anyone they see in the water. three people on board the yacht that have crashed have been rescued. this is video released of the coast guard hoisting three people out of pacific ocean. they were hit with huge waves. three people on board the yacht called the low speed chase was thrown off the boat.

now uninhabitable. no one was injured by the boulders but they said it sounded like bombs were exploding in the neighborhood. one woman was hit by a regional train. witnesses say she was lying across the tracks when the train hit her. she appeared to be alone. police closed down the area to investigate the accident. >> one of them was injured in an accident along interstate 580. chp said a woman driving a chrysler cut off the other woman who is driving a jeep cherokee. they hit the center divide. it is still under investigation. a patient at a south carolina hospital is facing charges of possessing explosives. security officers called them after finding it in the bag. it as glass bottle with zealand on top and gunpowder inside. pipe bombs were found in the home. 51-year-old patient is under guard in the hospital.

good morning and welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday, april 15th. i'm eric rasmussen. >> i'm claudine wong. rosemary orozco joins us with a quick look at your forecast. >> we have fair weather on the way this morning. we are looking at mostly gray around the bay area, even dealing with patchy dense fog that will again to burn off in the next hour. we have high clouds will remain, temperatures will return to mildlike and we are looking at dry conditions as we head into the extended forecast. i'll break this down for you, show you what you can expect for your area coming up. >> thanks. the coast guard back out on the san francisco bay searching for four missing sailors. they were knocked off their boat yesterday by a powerful wave. ktvu's allie rasmus is live on verba buena island this morning where crews set out from this morning. >> reporter: one rescue boat already left, the second one preparing to head out any

minute now. the latest estimate about 30 minutes from now. the cutter pike the boat you're looking at will be headed out toward the farallon islands. the woman you're looking at, she is the captain, she is getting onto the upper deck of the boat and this boat should be heading out sometime in the next half hour. this coast guard cutter, the one that already left and two california air guard helicopters are on their way to the area where a yacht accident happened yesterday. it's 26 miles west of the golden gate near the farallon islands. the boat called the low speed chase left the san francisco yacht club yesterday morning to take part in a 58-mile race around the farallones. the boat was struck by several large waves, it hit some rocks, several people were thrown overboard. three people were already rescued by the coast garbled yesterday, three sailors on that yacht and this is video of them being plucked from the open ocean. one sailor is confirmed dead and there are four others still missing this morning and the coast guard says they are optimistic their crew can still find them alive. >> this is a -- this is still a

search and rescue mission, the coast guard and the international guard continue to have a belief there's a possibility of survival for these individuals and we want to give hope to the families and friends that are missing and the people. >> reporter: along with the ghost guard, there are two helicopters from the california -- coast guard, there are two helicopters from the california ghost coast guard helping with an aerial search. a spokesperson told me those two helicopters departed moffitt field after 8:00 this morning. coast guard representatives say the sea conditions are a little better today than yesterday. they are facing 6-foot waves on average out by the farallones as opposed to 10-foot waves yesterday. that should make the rescue and the search somewhat easier but visibility foggy and cloudy out here is a problem. 6 miles of visibility out in the open sea. again, you just watched the captain walk into the bridge, the upper deck of this coast

guard cutter that is about to head out. the crew members are on board, the engines running and this ship is getting ready to head out into the pacific. live at verba buena island, allie rasmus. a transmission error at 4:30 this morning cut off power to 3800 people in lake merit, china town. one of them was in fact our own photographer who got stuck in an elevator in his building while on his way to work. he was actually trapped inside for two hours. firefighters had to help get him out. he is okay and here at work. a tornado in oklahoma killed at least five people early this morning. want to show you new video from woodward, oklahoma where a tornado blew through that town in the middle of the night and turned dozens of homes into a mess of debris. it's all being cleared out by heavy equipment this morning. the mayor of woodward is just beginning to assess that damage. >> we have lost five lives and we have our hospital -- our

hospital has got 37 people and several of those are critical too. this thing comes in the middle of the night and it just -- it just caught us asleep. >> the mayor also said tornado sirens were working during the day yesterday but were apparently not working when that tornado hit around midnight. oklahoma wasn't the only state. twisters ripping through several states in the central part of the u.s. at least 10 swept through kansas yesterday and sirens did go off as those funnel clouds touched down in several communities. a state of emergency has been declared. this morning oakland police looking for a person they say caused a crash and then ran from the scene. around 3:00 this morning, police say a car came down the 580 off-ramp onto oakland avenue. they say it ran a red light and crashed into another car. then the driver got out and fled the scene. one person from the other car was taken to the hospital. police say both cars were

totaled. a man in custody after crashing his car during a police chase in san francisco. it happened just after 3:00 this morning near tennessee street not far from the waterfront. the vehicle rammed a tree, a street lamp and ended up knocking down a fence at a lumber supply yard. speeds during the chase reportedly went up to 100 miles an hour. the motorist whose identity had not been -- has not been released fled on foot but captured by san francisco police. there's no word on what led the pursuit in the first place. a woman in critical condition after an apartment fire in san francisco. firefighters say the blaze may have started in the kitchen there. the fire quickly went to two alarms and some 50 firefighters had to help put out those flames. when crews first arrived there, they were told someone was in the apartment and could not get out. >> the victim was deep in the fire unit itself. a fire block with a hose lead had to be used or put in place for the fire in the kitchen. they were able to contain that, get by the fire and make rescue

of the individual that was inside. >> the woman was taken to san francisco general hospital with critical injuries. a firefighter also suffered a small cut on the finger battling that blaze. the red cross is now helping displaced residents find temporary shelter and no word yet on a cause. a young girl in custody of child protective services after being found alone in the car feet from the bodies of a man and woman who were shot to death. now southeast police -- san jose police are investigating a possible connection between the child and the adults. the man's body was discovered at a shopping center on east capital expressway. the woman's body was just 20 yards away between two cars. >> the body was right here where we are standing. there's a mark. i think i saw the markings. the body was laying down here. i think the legs were this way and the face that way and had some blood on the face. >> police aren't commenting on the case except to say they believe the child is related to one of the victims. the names of the two people found dead are not being released until families are

notified. today president obama is wrapping up his visit to the submit of americas in colombia. the heads of 33 western hemisphere countries will take part in a traditional family photo. yesterday the president sat next to secretary of state hillary clinton during a roundtable forum. foreign leaders have criticized president obama for excluding cuba in the summit. last night everyone took a break from global politics and relaxed at a leadership dinner. people protesting the summit burned and trampled on the american flag. some 3000 demonstrators marched through yesterday chanting in spanish long live cuba. other protesters wore masks and carried signs about the closure of guantanamo bay camp. 11 employees had been placed on administrative leave and sent back to the u.s. for misconduct. they are special agents and uniformed officers not assigned

dangerous insurgents. police say the attackers used explosives and hand grenades to get into that prison and then once they were inside, they headed to the section where the death row inmates are held. now, after an hour fight with the guards and after they set fire to that prison, they were able to escape. today marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the titanic. to honor the occasion, passengers of a memorial cruise held a moment of silence early this morning at the time of the sinking. they also laid a wreath at the location the ocean liner went down. some of the passengers on the cruise had ties to the victims of the titanic. one woman says it was the closest she has ever felt to her grandfather. >> it's almost as though while i was here, he was alive for me and i can now -- i can let him go. >> the memorial cruise is following the same route of the ill fated titanic. the 12 night journey features the same music, food and entertainment as the original

"occupy wall street" has promised a lot of activity this spring and we are seeing the

beginning of it right now. they are calling it the spring awakening. dozens of people showed up at new york central park yesterday afternoon to show support for the movement. occupiers organized this event to educate people on the impact of what they call wall street greed, shake off the struggles of winter and kick off a new season of protest set to last about six months. most of the stayaway orders against occupy cal protesters have been overturned. 12 people were ordered to stay away from the campus when not attending the class. they still face hearings on charges of resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and obstructing a public space. tom petty and the heart breakers offering a reward for their stolen guitars. it was reported on thursday. on its website the band is offering a no questions asked $7500 reward for information leading to the return of their instruments.

right now the search continues for four sailors missing after a boat accident in the san francisco bay. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm eric rasmussen in today for mike mibach. just in the lastly five minutes the coast guard launched a second rescue boat in an effort to find those four people. they were knocked off their boat by a large wave yesterday during a race around the farallon islands. three other sailors were rescued, a fourth person was also recovered but was pronounced dead. the coast guard is launching boats from verba buena island this morning to help with the search for the missing sailors. allie rasmus has been following their efforts all morning long. she will have another live report for us coming up at 9:45. a tornado in oklahoma has killed at least five people this morning. this is the type of violate weather people in oklahoma have been dealing with. a storm chaser caught this

multivortex tornado on video near cherokee, oklahoma yesterday. five deaths and several injuries reported in the town of woodward. the mayor of woodward said tornado sirens were working yesterday but apparently not working when the deadly tornado hit. tornados have been stirring up trouble across the midwest and plains this weekend. in iowa a possible tornado severely damaged thurmond. the emergency management director there says at least 75% of that town was destroyed. town officials and residents say that disaster was unlike anything they had ever experienced. >> the next thing i know, the house was shaking and i could feel it lifting and it was over that quick. >> remarkably there were no injuries or deaths reported in thurmond. the victims of a mass murder in san francisco laid to rest this morning. the bodies of five people were found in a house across the street from city college last month. four members of the lay family

and a family friend will killed by blunt force trauma. today's funeral procession will begin in san francisco and conclude at a cemetery. we are told san francisco mayor ed lee and city supervisor are expected to attend the service. the 35-year-old suspect is being held on $25 million bail. and right now volunteers are continuing the search for missing teenager ciera lamar. sheriffs crews have been focusing on two reservoirs near the 15-year-old's home. dive teams have been looking for any clues about her disappearance. but so far the underwater search has turned up nothing. until 1:00 this afternoon volunteers 18 and older can check in at burnett elementary school in morgan hill. new information about the suspect in the modesto standoff. that 11-hour stalemate ended thursday night when the building was suspect was holed up in caught fire. police, though, say he was prepared for battle. he wore a vest, had several weapons, a gas mask and radios.

a neighbor showed a cell phone video she shot during the standoff. >> i heard the gunshot back and forth. >> they pulled the cop out, four policemen grabbed him and dragged him out and just hard to watch. >> authorities have yet to release the suspect's identity but property records indicate the place belonged to james ferrario. two were shot and killed while serving eviction papers. the body of the suspect found in the burned ruins of the apartment building. the area is going to be closed for several more days to residents because investigators are still sifting through that scene trying to determine what caused the fire and if the suspect committed suicide. police in fairfield identified a suspect in a bar shooting that left one man dead. officers are looking for 24- year-old alex leon. leon is accused of shooting two men in the head during a fight at perk's place bar and grill which is on parker road. it happened wednesday night and one of the victims did die at

the scene. the second, however, is expected to survive. police say leon should be considered armed and dangerous. two women were injured, one of them critically in a car crash in castro valley. it happened yesterday. the chp says a woman driving a chrysler cut off the other woman who was driving a jeep cherokee. both vehicles hit the center divide. a kitchen fire displaced eight people in san jose overnight. that fire broke out in an apartment on the 800 block of calhoun street around 5:30 yesterday night. two children were among those displaced. no one was injured but the cause of that fire is still under investigation. flammable items are being blamed for this fire that damaged a heyward home. the hayward fire department sent us these pictures of the blaze yesterday morning on vagabond lane. investigators say several flammable items were piled together in the entryway of that home causing that fire. nobody was hurt but one person has been displaced. gun rights activists are promising to pack tuesday's pinole city council meeting.

they will be there to support k. robert miller the caretaker at pinole valley park. he has applied for a home occupation use permit to sell firearms but the city is considering an ordinance that would ban the sale of guns in residential areas of the city. gun rights activists say this ordinance would chip away at their constitutional rights. north bay residents being warned about potential door to door scams. the district attorney's office says some crooks are asking people to donate to bogus charities. this happens sometimes after disasters like tornados and earthquakes. always ask for the charity's name, address, phone number and written information about its programs. legitimate organizations will provide that information very easily. also police say to reject high pressure sales pitches by shutting the door or hanging up the phone. fall classes at the 23 california state universities might not open on time. faculty will begin voting tomorrow on whether to authorize their union to call for a strike. mediation failed to reach a collective bargaining agreement earlier this month. some of the sticking points

farallon islands and right now the coast guard is searching for four sailors who are still missing. ktvu's allie rasmus slave at verba buena island -- is live at verba buena island where the second boat just left. >> reporter: one coast guard boat left early this morning, the second one departed the dock here at verba buena island 15 minutes ago. the coast guard karatter pike is -- cutter pike is headed out to the farallon islands. the sea conditions are better today than yesterday. search crews will face 6-foot waves out in the open ocean versus the 10-foot waves they had to deal with yesterday. but visibility is poor this morning, fog and low clouds are giving search crews out in the water just 6 miles of visibility. now, they are headed 26 miles west of the golden gate near the farallon island but that's where the accident happened. the boat left the san francisco

yacht club yesterday morning to take part in a race around the farallones. the boat was struck by several large waves. it hit the rocks and several people were thrown overboard. now, three people have already been rescued by the coast guard yesterday and this is video of those three sailors being plucked from the open ocean. one sailor is confirmed dead. but again, there are four others who were on that boat during the accident who are still missing. this morning the coast guard says they are optimistic their crew can still find the sailors alive. >> but they are scouring the farallon islands, which is a large area. they are looking on rocks and on sea at the actually island. it's going to be hundreds of square miles searched. >> reporter: now, along with the coast guard, there are two helicopters from the california air guard out of moffett field who are also helping with the aerial search. they were helping yesterday afternoon and they headed back out this morning. now, again, the search for these four missing sailors continues today. this is their first full day of

searching, the coast guard and the california international guard are involved. ktvu will have updates on this story throughout the day and our later newscasts and of course on ktvu.com. live at verba buena island, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a section of -- it happened friday morning as a result of the recent wet weather. crews say trees and mud came down the hill knocking out powerlines and blocking the road. they say cleanup efforts were slow in order to protect the homes on the hill. they have also added a guardrail there to the road in case of future slides. recovery efforts underway after boulders came crashing down in honolulu on a mountain side there. that happened last night around 9:00 p.m. several homes were smashed and at least two are uninhabitable. no one injured by the boulders but residents did say it sounded like bombs were exploding in their neighborhood. in today's news of the world, north korea's new leader 345eud his first televised speech since taking power.

kim jong-un spoke during what would have been the one hundredth birthday of his grandfather. today's speech touched on issues including north korea's military strength and a pledge insuring citizens will not starve. he became leader last december when his father kim jong il died. south korea is taking to the skies to encourage means north koreans to -- calling for the end of the succession of dictators. propaganda materials contained 20,000 leaflets, 300 dvds and 1000 u.s. $1 bills. a fragile cease fire in syria on even shakier ground this morning. hours before u.n. observers are set to arrive tonight, at least three people died from the shelling and rebels say the

shelling came at a rate of six per minute. syria's government and opposition forces are accusing each other of violating the truce. negotiates will meet on may 23rd for the next round of nuclear talks and both sides called yesterday's meeting in turkey a positive first step. the u.s. is considering lifting some economic sanctions against tehran if it allows inspectors more access to its nuclear program. another strong earthquake has hit off the coast of indonesia. officials say there is no danger of a tsunami after the 6.2 magnitude quake. there have been no reports of injuries or damage. two powerlines earthquakes of 8.6 and -- powerful earthquakes triggered a tsunami watch last wednesday. civilians to come to the aid of a 12-ton whale. this rescue of the 24-foot long whale required nearly 200 people, 40 of which were navy personnel. some of them were pulling the whale back into the waves with

boats. mexican officials say the 5- year-old whale injured its tail during the beaching but was able to swim out to sea after being pulled into the water. jury selection begins tomorrow in the new trial of roger clemens, the former major league baseball is accused of lying to congress when he said he never used performance enhancing drugs. a mistrial declared last july after prosecutors showed jurors evidence that had been ruled inadmissible. clemens is accused of lying to congress back in 2008 when he testified during an investigation into the use of steroids in professional baseball. clemens has denied using drugs. the u.s. forest service has one final approval for a major thinning project at lake tahoe. that project set to begin this summer is designed to reduce the threat of a major wildfire. it is going to focus on a 10,000-acre area covering much of california side of the lake's south shore. that project has been pending since 2004 and it calls for the removal of trees and the thinning of brush which can be seen as fuel for any fires.

news of a deal to keep the historic santa cruz mission open for the next three years. the mission was one of the 70 state parks slated to close on july 1st because of budget problems. under the deal a local group pledged to raise $45,000 a year to pay for ongoing operation costs. people are teaming up to restore natural habitats in the bay area in the runup to earth day next sunday. dozens of volunteers spruced up this community garden. they built new plant beds and removed weeds. pg&e is working with the california state parks foundation to restore natural habitats all across northern california. >> all of these projects are about creating public access to these extraordinary places but also protecting them for future generations as well. >> in oakland, people picked up pieces of garbage along the water in the martin luther king, jr. regional shoreline creating a habitat for birds and other wildlife there. the goal to beautify and

the florida highway patrol investigating why a woman crashed into this grocery store injuring 10 people. 76-year-old thelma waggenhoffer says she has no idea what caused her to drive into the store and police say it was not caused by any type of mechanical failure on that car. >> you cannot believe that something like this could happen. i mean, how does a car drive through the front door like that? >> witnesses say an 80-year-old man was trapped underneath the car and a baby was thrown across the store. the florida highway patrol is again investigating that crash. the world's lightningest ocean yacht race now resumed. spectators watched from shore as the 10th leg of this year's clipper round the world started yesterday near the golden gate bridge. early kwre69d morning -- yesterday morning oakland mayor sent off the fleet. the boats are now making their

way to new york. among them is the one hit by a giant wave about 400 miles west of san francisco. one of the two rescued crew members has actually rejoined the race. and it is said to be the largest all sail boat show on the west coast. the strictly sail pacific boat show is going on in oakland with more than 300 exhibiters, 100 seminars and free sail boat rides, the organizers say the show has something for everybody. the sail boat show continues until 5:00 this evening. admission is $15 for adults. next week the 49ers will break ground on their new stadium in the south bay and the team has grand am bigs for it. the 49ers reportedly planned to bid on super bowl l, that is going to be played in 2016 in the santa clara stadium will be able to expand to 75,000 seats which is more than enough to meet nfl rules for a super bowl stadium. teams are required to play two seasons in their new venues before they can host a super bowl. how much would you pay to
