"mornings on 2" begins right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's monday, april 16th. a car engulfed in flames forced the evacuation of an east bay apartment building. it happened on the 5500 block of foothill boulevard in

oakland. firefighters struggled but finally extinguished the intense fire. alex savidge has pictures you will not see anywhere else. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. the suv was parked here. the flames, so hot, they melted the back part of that car that was parked right next to it. the flames also forced people to evacuate this apartment. neighbors woke up around 2:00 and they ran outside to safety. the good news, no one was hurt in the fire which broke out on in the 5500 block of foothill boulevard. this appeared to be a chrysler pacifica crossover suv and investigators believe it was intentionally torched. part of the reason they believe that, this fire started in the cabin of that suv and it didn't start in the engine of the car. investigators figured that out once they pried open the car of the -- the hood of the car. now, investigators are trying to figure out who set fire to

to a deadly tragedy. you can see tara moriarty is at the scene. what do you know, tara? >> reporter: well, friends kell us that kim conover was being stalked by her husband. they say she was seeking a divorce, she was trying to get away from him and she came here to her divorce attorney's office. what she didn't realize is kevin conover was here, parked across the street, armedded with a gun -- armed with a gun. yesterday afternoon, police say kevin conover shot kim conover in front of her divorce attorney's office and he then turned the gun on himself. the attorney witnessed the entire murder-suicide. friends say it's particularly tragic because the couple had young twins together. "what began in a place of love

ended in a nightmare seen only in the movies." kim has two teenaged daughters from a previous marriage. she grew up in petaluma, graduated from high school here. she was a second grade teacher at meadow elementary school. we're headed there in a few minutes to try to get reaction from the teachers. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a 17-year-old now in the protection of cps after their parents are found dead. this happened on the east capital expressway saturday morning. their daughter was found unharmed in a car a few feet away. the police have not released the name of the man or the woman nor any details of the shooting. some city leaders in san francisco are expressing concern that a plan to allow california pacific medical

center to build a new hospital could drive up costs. it would create 1500 jobs. mayor lee supports the plan. but some city supervisors are questioning whether the hospital will pass on some of the $2.5 billion construction costs to patients. congress is looking into the secret service scandal that surfaced during president obama's trip to colombia to the summit of the americas over the weekend. several lawmakers say they want an investigation into the allegations of secret service members inviting prostitutes to their hotels in advance of the president's arrival in colombia. coming up at 7:5, how the scandal -- 7:15, how the scandal came to light. more bay area children may soon get a ride on muni. muni will vote on tomorrow whether to approve this controversial idea. right now, only kids understand 5 can ride for free -- under 5 can ride for free.

knbr abruptly dismissed him last week. now he's hired a prominent san francisco attorney. she's already issued a press release saying barbieri was wrongfully terminated due to accusations he was late to work. knbr issued a press release of its own saying he violated the basic terms of his contract. the wife of ross mirkarimi may extend her visit to her native venezuela. honolulu mott side and -- mountain side and several homes were damaged. some of them are not liveable. one of the boulders was the size of a small car. >> all i heard was wood breaking and the whole place shaking. >> one really big rock, about 4 feet in diameter, came within inches of hitting a resident lying down and just resting. look at these pictures. a boulder ripped through a carport roof and rolled across the street and hit another house. four good samaritans helped rescue a man that was hit and rolled into a creek. all of this happened yesterday in denver, colorado. police say the man was unconscious. he was submerged under water. now, witnesses ran in, ran over there, knocked out the windows, but couldn't free the man from

his seat belts. firefighters arrived and they were able to get him out. he's now recovering in a hospital. by the way, police cited the driver of the other car in that crash. it is 7:18. the future of some popular waterslides in pleasanton will be discussed at a public meeting tonight. the water slides are part of the shadow cliffs regional recreational area. but the east bay regional park says the slides will be closed this summer. that's after inspections reportedly revealed the need for major repairs. it is likely that brian wilson will have what's called tommy john's surgery keeping him out for the rest of the season. an mri on friday revealed problems with his right elbow. he's getting one more professional opinion and then a final decision is expected by the end of the week.

today, on march 16th. and organizers are always looking for more volunteers. in is where at 6:30 later on today, friends and family of sierra lamar will gather for a balloon release and prayer service. family and friends of the missing teen want to keep the community here involved in the search and they don't want people heretofore get about their missing daughter. in the past week hundreds of, have been looking for -- hundreds of volunteers have been looking for her. they haven't reported any evidence of an abduction or crime. last week, divers combed through the murky reservoirs. so far they've not found any signs of anything significant connected to the case. the sheriff's office has so far

plains states are returning to their neighborhoods to survey the destruction left behind by a series of weekend tornadoes. here's more. >> reporter: this is the first time anyone has gotten a look at this oak lawn neighborhood of wichita kansas, the tornado that hit here is estimated at an ef-3. that means the winds were between 136 and 165 miles an hour. what you are supposed to see with that tornado, structures that are intact but structures with significant damage like this one with the walls blown out. this tornado really appeared to skip across the neighborhood. you have a lot of damage on this particular street. two streets over. the houses look almost fine which includes all of the houses, including all of the houses a couple of feet over, all of this debris the stuff picked up by the funnel cloud

and just sandblasted everything within the reach of the funnel cloud. one other thing i want to point out to you, you may remember after hurricane katrina, this is an indication that this structure has been searched. we know here in kansas, there were no fatalities as a result of these tornadoes. it's really remarkable with 120 tornados that were spotted, only one of those tornadoes caused fatalities and that's in oklahoma and all of the fatalities what we're hearing from emergency crews anyway are the result of people who didn't get to a shelter. didn't get to a basement or a prebuilt storm shelter. these are people who didn't heed the warnings or have any where to go. of all of the people that heeded the warnings, no one was killed. tori? >> all right. mike tobin joining us live. thank you. 7:34. back here at home, california

and we really kick that into higher gear. thursday and friday. that's an 80-degree temperature. warm on saturday. cooler on sunday. tori? >> thank you, steve. 7:39. we have an update on a story we first told you about on friday on "mornings on 2." a 4-year-old boy who has trouble walking because of a rare disorder has completed a one-mile race. oliver was one of more than 1,000 people who took part in the benicia education run yesterday. he suffers from cgd, a rare genetic disorder, that affects fewer than 500 people worldwide. but that didn't stop him from crossing the finish-line with his walker. >> oliver gives us so much hope and faith and he's -- he's a go- better. we have high hopes that he will walk one day. he's very motivated. that's one of the best things. this isn't the first time allie has crossed the finish line.

vote today on president obama's proposal to increase taxes on millionaires. but it stands little chance of passing. under the so-called buffett rule, people making more than a million dollars a year would pay at least the percentage of income intacts as middle class families and taxes could not -- would not go up for those making less than $50,000 a year. president obama says a survey found that two-thirds of millionaires support the proposal but that more support is needed from republicans. starting today, the -- in 2010, voters approved a bond measure after the school board promised a tax rate of $60 for a $110,000 assessed value. that's the same homeowners have been paying. now the district wants to raise the rate to between $89 and $110. tonight's forum will begin at

tragedy. police now investigating a murder-suicide that happened right outside a downtown law office on keller street. ktvu's tara moriarty is there now with details about what happened. tara? >> reporter: well, students are starting to arrive at meadow elementary school with very heavy hearts. all of the parents have been notified about mrs. conover's murder. she was a popular second grade teacher here and the staff says she will be missed. friends say the 43-year-old kim conover was being stalked by her husband, kevin. she went to her attorney's office trying to make a clean break. kevin was waiting for her across the street. police say he shot and killed her on the sidewalk and then turned the gun on himself. police say it's particularly tragic because the couple had twins together. at her school, teachers are also grappling with the tragedy. >> highly requested teacher, loved by everybody. this morning we are -- grief counselors are coming in to

allie rasmus is live with more. >> reporter: behind us is burnett elementary in morgan hill. this closed-down school has been the headquarters for the volunteer search efor the to find sierra lamar. you can see from the sign -- search effort to find sierra lamar. and as you can see from the sign, they are always looking for more volunteers. there will be a balloon ceremony and vigil to mark the one-month anniversary of sierra lamar being missing. in the past two weeks hundreds of people have gone out to look for clues in her disappearance. so far, volunteers, however, have not found anything connected to the investigation. it was one month ago that 15- year-old sierra disappeared on her way to catch the bus to school. sheriffs suspect she may have been kidnapped but so far they've not reported any evidence of an abduction or
