. a search is called off and the local yachting community is mourning after the tragedy at the coast of san francisco. we have more today from people who knew the victims. i'm tori campbell. the boating tragedy at the farallon islands left one dead and four now presumed dead. we're live from the san francisco yacht club where a memorial has been set for the sailors lost at sea. >> reporter: we are learning more about the crew members who are on board that ship over

this past weekend. four of them were members of the san francisco yacht club located here. all of them seasoned sailors according to people we've talked to. there are reports that one of the missing was part of a historic moment in bay area sports history. when barry bonds hit his five00th career home run, the teen girl who greeted him at home plate was alex busch, one of the missing sailors from this weekend's accident. her dad was a a former executive for the giants. we're learn morgue about the sailor confirmed dead, marc kasanin. his body found in the water off the coast of the farallon islands. the 46-year-old from belvedere was an avid sailor and artist. we talked to a fellow san francisco yacht club member who knew marc kasanin since he was young. >> i have known marc since he's been a little kid. so he's going to be really

missed. i'm having a tough time dealing with it, too, the two kids. >> reporter: this wreck happened on saturday while the boat was rounding the farallon islands. a pair of large waves slammed into the vessel sending crew members into the water. the coast guard rescued three people right away. four people are still missing including alan cahill. the coast guard has called off that search after scouring 5,000 square miles of open water. it is difficult for the club's director to hear that but he understands the decision. >> we're all sailors and know the conditions and understand the probability of sure vial at this point is near zero. it's just that phase of having to transition into what you now know is most likely we've lost the four sailors. we're at this point hoping we can have some recovery of some of the bodies that we can give them a proper service and

proper burial. >> reporter: the sailing community in mourning in marin county. flags at half staff at belvedere city hall where several of the sailors are from. the director of the yacht club says everyone on board was wearing their life vests and cold weather gear. he says this afternoon that an accident -- after an accident of this magnitude the club will be reviewing their safety procedures. back to you. more details on the tragedy including the names of the people involved, 46-year-old marc kasanin of belvedere died in the accident. four others are missing and presumed dead. they're alex busch of larkspur, alan cahill, jordan fromm and elmore morsey. the coast guard did rescue james bradford of chicago, bring chong and nick voss. cal train is investigating a fatal accident in san mateo involving a train and a

pedestrian. the northbound train number 215 struck the person near the hayward park station in san mateo. it's not far from highway 92. it happened around 7:30 this morning. the 215 is an express train which did not stop at the station. it's not clear whether the man was crossing the tracks on a nearby walkway or if he was on the station platform. people in petaluma are in grief after a murder-suicide there that took the life of a beloved teacher. it happened yesterday outside the keller street office of an attorney representing 43-year- old kim conover. authorities say she was divorcing her husband kevin and he was apparently so upset he shot and killed his wife and then himself. kim conover was a second grade teacher at meadow elementary school. >> highly requested teacher, loved by everybody, and this morning grief counselors are coming in to meet with all of

the kids and their parents together to help the kids get through this tragedy. >> the couple had two-year-old twins. a vigil is set for tonight to mark one month since the disappearance of morgan hill teen sierra lamar. searches continue today at the area around her home where she was last seen march 16th leaving for a bus to school. investigators have indicated she was probably abducted. items belonging to her including a bag and cell phone have been recovered from areas near her home. the threat of a strike looms over all cal state campuses. rallies are under way as cal state employees begin an online vote to decide whether they'll pursuit option of walking off the job. we're live from san francisco to explain what's behind this

possible strike. >> reporter: we're at san francisco state. faculty is having a rally and demonstration that's about to start to raise awareness about this vote and the possible strike. that's why you see some colorful costumes out here along with the p.a. system and people getting ready to gather. 23,000 professors, coaches, librarians have been working without a contract since june 2010. the union wanted to extend its existing contract but administrators said it was time for changes. the administration wants a salary freeze for the faculty. they're saying that there should be no cap on class sizes which the faculty opposes, more flexibility to cut the pay of summer professors and they want to introduce an evaluation system to tie that to raises for the faculty. administrators say the changes have to happen because of a drastic reduction in state funding for higher education. >> we have been cut about $1

billion since 2007, 2008. we're trying to get some flexibility that will allow us to react to the volatility of the budget. >> the administration is interested in flexibility, then i encourage those executives in the csu who make more money than me, ten times more, five times more, to take a pay cut. >> reporter: according to a csu spokesman, the chancellor of the csu system makes $420,000 annually. if a strike is authorized by the faculty here, groups of campuses would go on on strike for two days at a time across the 23 campuses in the csu system. students say they support the idea of a strike and sympathize with their professors. >> drastic measure like that is just a form of providing awareness to everyone that things aren't right. >> a lot of my classes they

won't even print us syllabuses, won't print work sheets to do our home work on. i think that if striking is going to show that it's not easy, they can't do more with less. >> reporter: faculty members willing vote here on campus across the 23 campuses and will also vote online over two weeks. the issue here is whether or not to vote to allow their union to call a strike should the contract negotiations fail. back to you. later this year pg&e will launch a three month project to study earthquake fall lines near the diablo canyon nuclear plant on the central coast. the goal is to help pg&e estimate the location and magnitude of potential earthquakes. there is concern that the reactors could meltdown if they're not able to with stand an earthquake along one or more of the area's four fault lines.

a downed power pole in laugh yet create add live wire scare and cut power to dozens. a large at has moving truck snagged low hanging lines attached to the pole and brought it down around 9:45 this morning. it triggered a a reverse 9-1-1 call warning people in the area to shelter in place. the order was lifted just before 11:00 a.m. after pg&e cut off power to the line. pg&e says 51 customers including a school are now without power. >> i was pulling into this cul- de-sac making my delivery and then the tree started shaking. then i started seeing cables. i figured i'd back up. then the pole came down, sparks on this side. >> there is no word on when the pole and lines will be repaired

heavy machinery is out and neighbors are helping neighbors clean up after deadly tornadoes ripped through parts of the midwest yesterday. six people were killed when a tornado hit the town of woodward, oklahoma. officials say warning sirens did not sound because they may have been disabled when lightning hit a control tower. this is the same storm system that brought hundreds of lightning strikes to the bay area on thursday night. it spanned more than 100 tornadoes in the midwest since saturday. storm chasers captured these on video including two that touched down simultaneously. most of the tornadoes were in kansas, oklahoma, iowa and nebraska. arson investigators are searching for whoever set a car

fire in oakland early this morning on foothill boulevard between high street and seminariy avenue much the fire was so big it forced the evacuation of a nearby apartment building. no one was hurt. investigators say they do have solid evidence the car fire was intentionally set. this is video you will see only on 2. our camera was on the scene just after 2:00 a.m. minutes after the car burst into flames. we have new images of a dumpster fire outside the house of prime rib in san francisco. a viewer captured this picture the flames. firefighters kept the fire from spreading to a nearby apartment building. no one was hurt. the fire extended into a second floor office area of the house of prime rib. we just called the restaurant and learned they'll be open for business this evening. today congress is weighing in on the secret service sex

scandal in colombia as the scandal grows. u.s. military officials first said five secret service agents were under investigation for misconduct involving prostitutes at a hotel. today the pentagon said eleven personnel have been placed on administrative leave. the agents were in colombia in advance of president barack obama as visit for the summit of the americas. this man said today he does not believe this is a one time incident and that he may launch a congressional investigation. a flight bound from britain to the united states made an emergency landing at london's gatwick airport this morning causing four people to have minor injuries. the flight to orlando, florida, had taken off from gatwick two hours earlier. fire officials say someone reported a small fire on board. everyone got off the plane. the emergency forced gatwick to suspend all flights for an

hour. pippa middleton, prince william's sister-in-law, is at the center of a police investigation after her friend pointed what appeared to be a gun at a photographer. the sun reports middleton was riding in a car with three male friends when the driver aimed what appears to be a pistol right at the photographer. the incident happened over the weekend in paris. there has been tense following a series of shootings thbut could be called to testify and the man holding the weapon could reportedly face a huge fine and jail time even if it turns out the gun was a fake. normally the tax deadline is april 15th, yesterday. this year you have until midnight tomorrow to file state and federal returns. the taxes are not late until 12:01 wednesday morning. you get extra time because april 15th fell on a sunday and today is emancipation day in washington, d.c., marking the occasion when president lincoln

underway in the senate on a millionaire's tax. under the so-called buffett rule people making more than $1 million a year would pay at least the same percentage of income in taxes as middle class families. it's one of two tax proposals, one from each side, that are set for a vote this week in congress. neither is give an chance of winning approval. both parties are looking to score political points. starting tonight the mount diablo school board will hold community forums regarding a proposed property tax increase. in 2010 voters approved a bond measure after the school board promise add tax rate of $60 per $100,000 assessed value. that's the same as what homeowners had been paying. now the district wants to raise the rate to between $89 and $110. a scary scene unfolded at san francisco bart station yesterday. a man named michael jumped under the tracks at the 24-9sdz

the dow is up thanks to a strong increase in retail sales. apple strategying down the nasdaq. no specific reason, just likely some profit taking after a huge run-up this year. apple down 3.5%. the that is dak is -- the dow is up 96. nasdaq down 20. the commerce department says retail sales posted solid gains last month. they rose .8% in march. slight improvements in the job market and warmer weather got people out to shop. prosecutors say they might call barry bonds and jose conseco as witnesses against former major league star pitcher roger clemens. jury selection began today in roger clemens' perjury trial in washington, d.c. he is accused of lying to congress when he said he never used performance
