now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, april 17th. an important warning is going out to parents and students in concord about an apparent abduction attempt. the head of el dorado middle school says a man tried to lure a 7th grade girl into his van yesterday morning. ktvu's tara moriarty tells us this is not the first time there's been a disturbing incident near the school. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. there was another incident back in march. but police bleav that was a different child predator. we looked at the megan's law website and we found there were more than 700 registered sex offenders in contra costa county alone. we found one person matching the description is living in concord. we have yet to hear back from the police about the investigation. you can see this is el dorado middle school. parents received a school alert

about the predator last night. that's because yesterday morning, a 7th grader here was approached by a suspicious bhan in a beige-colored van. police say the man pulled up next to the girl on glazer drive as she was walking to school and offered her a ride. she refused several times and went to a safe area and called her parents. the parents took her to -- to class. the mt. diablo aols school district has issued a stranger danger alert. >> the man is described as bald, in his 30s, heavy-set with a black mustache and goatee. possibly of polynesian decent. the purpose of this phone call is to remind your children not to speak to strangers in car while going to or from school. >> reporter: we're told police will -- we're told police no not be able to speak with -- we are told police will not be able to speak with us. live in concord, tara moriarty,

ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. 7:02. in overnight news, the california highway patrol is investigating a fatal accident that trapped one man in his car. it happened just before 1:00 a.m. on northbound 60 in san jose just before capital expressway. the chp says an older-model pickup truck ran off the road and hit a pole. the chp says hen they arrived on the -- hen they arrived on the scene -- when they arrived on the scene, both the truck and the man was on fire. san jose firefighters responded but the driver died at the scene. no other details about the victim have been released. santa clara county sheriff deputies say they have new leads in thedy a -- in the disappearance of sierra lamar. family members are hopeful the clues will pan out. >> bring sierra home! >> at a vigil in morgan hill last night, family and friends released 500 balloons into the air.

they were parking one month since sierra vanished. newspaper at 7:30, we'll go live to san jose with the reason investigators are not saying much about what they found. 7:03. there is a new strain of a common illness shaking people up this morning here in the bay area. san francisco "chronicle" reports bay area doctors are seeing a new strain of hand, foot-and-mouth disease. in some cases, it's causing the fingernails and the toe nails of children to fall off. there's also a more widespread rash connected with this strain which spreads like a common cold. the parents should be advised to look out for a fever that lasses more than a couple of days -- lasts more than a couple of days. and watch for symptoms such as being lethargic or vomiting. teachers in alameda will be hitting picket lines. ktvu's alex savidge is at alameda school to tell us what the teach remembers concerned about and what led to this demonstration. >> reporter: good morning,

dave. hundreds of alameda teachers will be picketing at schools across the city including here at alameda high school where folks have already begun their picket line. they are angry over failed contract negotiations and doing all of this before the beginning of the school day. they are passing out leaflets to parents and other members of the public as they arrive at school. teachers say they've taken pay cuts and have made other sacrifices and that's why recently, last month, they rejected a contract. 500 teachers with the alameda education association turned down that contract offer. teachers say the offer increases their workload without proper excepttation. that agreement called for a 1.5% annual raise. but teachers say these negotiations are about more than pay. they also say it doesn't do enough to lower class sizes. the maximum number of students would be 25 in kindergarten and 3rd grade. teach, say they would prefer a 20-student cap. >> those were supposed to be

temporary class size numbers until we passed a parcel tax, which passed about a year ago, and the teachers were told we were going to go back to the smaller class sizes we had a year ago. >> reporter: i reached out to the district already this morning and have not heard back from anyone. it is clear, the district superintendent says the issue of pay is directly linked to the state bucket and so she said it's sort of, in essence, out of the district's hands. negotiations in this case have been yog going for about the past year or so and both sides are expected to come back to the bargaining table sometime soon. the picket lines are already forming. you can see a few teachers here at alameda school and there are picket lines that will be going up about 16 schools, passing out information to students and essentially teachers say they don't want to strike. it's something that they haven't seen here in alameda ever. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, aim lex. happening right now --

system is heading north. as it does, the tail end of this is dragging across. if you don't have any fog, you will probably start off with sun. machine. but then it will turn -- mostly sunny. but then it will turn partly cloudy. it's also increased the fog and the westerly breeze. a little cooler on your forecast. temperatures combination of fog, sun and clouds. but then after today, i think everything says i think we'll go warmer. temperatures at the coast, kind of held in check. it doesn't look like there's sold out but there is a lot out there. until you hit farther enough from any marine influence then you will find a new low 70s. this time of year, it's not that tough. it can warm up fast. 60s, low 70s and then mainly 60s on the peninsula. but upper 50s, pacifica and clouds will give way to sunshine and then here we go sunshine and warmer weather takes us thursday, friday, and still nice on saturday.

raise thanks to a ballot measure that city voters approved about six years ago. san francisco mayor ed lee can see his salary go up by $7700. district attorney george gascon's salary could increase by spwl -- by $13,000. and jeff adachi could get an extra $8,000. that measure called for salary adjustments every five years in san francisco city hall. they would be based on the salary of counterparts in other cities. been talked about for years, the close of doyle drive. it's finally begun. pam cook is here to tell us how it will affect traffic by the golden gate. pam in. >> we've been covering this for a little while now. this morning the work has begun. they closed the stretch of doyle drive. we've been talking about one northbound lane. last night, as scheduled, 8:00. it will stay closed until noon today. now, we want to take you out

supporters say the pilot program would create a new generation of transit riders in san francisco and help a lot of families. but others say the plan should be limited to low-income use to save money. just limiting it to low-income use would save $6.6 million compared to letting everyone under 1 ride for free. 7:24. sal's trying to help everybody get to where they need to go. got some problems, right? >> yeah, we do. we have a couple of issues in contra costa county that i want to highlight once again. first of all, we're gonna start with southbound 680en the right -- 6 0 on the right there -- 6 0 on the right there. now 680 coming in from walnut creek is definitely slower. you can definitely tell something is going on and then westbound 24, inside the caldecott, the second crash of the morning. these crashes have not been super major but they've been

enough. the one at stone valley road does have minor injuries. but again, most of it is gonna be the slow traffic associated with these problems. if i move the maps down to the hayward area, some slow traffic in hayward heading south. let's look at 237. some slow traffic there. also some slow traffic on northbound 280 getting up into the valley. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. pretty good pod bank has come back. a little cooler for some today, even with the sun. it will be mostly sunny, partly cloudy. some higher clouds will come in later. you can see the cloud deck. so that tell us temperatures willer hard-pressed. this does look like the coolest day of the week. there goes one system. the fog is underneath that. the next system is plowing to the north. we don't have to worry about that. but the higher clouds will drift across the north bay. 50s for some, 40s for others. after the system, high pressure is go that build in. that will take us into a warmer pattern. today is cooler across the board. a lot of low clouds, even some

her clothing inside. those items were tested at a crime lab. the results came back and that's where these new leads are coming from. investigators say this new information does not change their plans today to continue searching reservoirs in south santa clara county. a couple of minutes before our live shot, we saw a duver and the boat. >> this will have no impact on any future searches. the dive team will continue to scour. at this time, it's leads only. >> reporter: sierra's family continue to have faith. yesterday, they issued a balloon and candlelight vigil. each balloon had a message inside. the family will host another volunteer search temperature. they will be leaving from

burnett elementary tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. allie rasmus, chus. police are looking for the gunman who wounded a store clerk during a robbery attempt. it happened last night at the east oakland dollar and more store on international boulevard near 86th. witnesses say about a dozen shoppers were in the store when the gunman approached the clerk, demanded money and then shot her at very close range. police say the bullet grazed the woman's head but she is expected to survive. police say other clerks tried to stop the gunman but he managed to get away. oakland police are investigating a -- oakland police are investigating a car shooting. investigators say the man killed was a passenger inside the red sedan that, as crashed into a pole at kalaveras avenue yesterday. a gunman on the street standing opened fire on the car. stray bullets hit a passing car. we spoke to one woman inside

that car who was shaken up. but not hurt. she did not want to show her face. >> i was frozen. i was kind of horrified by how long it took me to duck. >> police closed the macarthur boulevard offramp for several hours as officers searched the scene for evidence. homicide detectives are still looking for the gunman this morning. 7:32. well, grieving families are still mourning the presumed deaths of several local sailors. they were on a yacht. the low-speed chase now shipwrecked on the farallon islands. eight crew members were racing around the islands from san francisco on saturday when big waves knocked most of them overboard. four sailors are still lost at sea. the -- the coast guard has called off the search. a racer from a different selling yacht described the conditions on the water as very intense. >> we had ten-foot swells. they were confused seas. and so it was challenging and

7:46. we are following a new development in the trial of the right-wing extremist in norway who has admitted to killing 77 people. this is video of him this morning. he defended the massacre saying he would do it again to defend against multiculturism in norway. at the start of the trial, one of the citizen judges was replaced. that's after it was discovered that he posted a message on facebook the day after the attacks says that he the extremist -- saying that the extremist deserves the death penalty. the death in illinois blamed on a swan. early saturday monday, a man was in a kayak in the pond of an apartment complex. that's when one of the two swans whoive ledder that -- who lived there knocked him out of the kayak. when he tried to swim ashore,

investigators say they have new leads now in the search for missing south bay teenager, sierra lamar. ktvu's allie rasmus is live at the santa clara county headquarters. what's gonna happen today? >> reporter: at this point, investigators are not going into details about what they found. detectives still have to follow up on the new leads. what we know about this morning, sheriff investigators say this new information is not changing their search plans for today. it was about an hour ago that we saw one of the sheriff didn'ts -- departments leave headquarters. it was trailing a boat behind it. in the last week, the sheriff's office had sent dive teams in the boats to search for clues. the underwater search continues today and this week. 15-year-old sierra lamar went missing on march 16th get investigators found -- 16th. investigators found her cell

the space shuttle "discovery" wrapped up its final flight within the last hour. the "discovery" rode on the back of a modified 747 from the kennedy space center in florida to dullus international airport near washington, d.c. it made the fly over the national mall in d.c. on the way.
