a strange man tried to lure a girl into his van yesterday morning. officials say yesterday's incident is not the only such abduction attempt in the area in recent weeks. >> the purpose of this phone call is to ask to you remind your children not to speak to strangers in cars while going to or from school. >> reporter: a stranger-danger alert for students at el dorado middle school. >> scary. >> reporter: the police pal says this is the -- principal says this is the second incident in two weeks. >> this guy was more persistent. after she said no, he kept pursuing her. that made it a little more scary for us. >> reporter: a 7th grader said she was walking to school here on glazer avenue when a man pulled up in a beige van and offered her a ride. >> the man is described as in his 30, bald, possibly of polynesian decent and a

mustache and goatee. >> reporter: jennifer's younger sister attends el dorado and she says she always tries to be aware of her surroundings. >> if there's a family, a mom with a lot of kids, i will walk with them so i can look like i am part of the family. >> reporter: the last incident to happen near here was back in march when a latino man tried to lure girls in his car. we've noticed police have beefed up patrols and we're following up on leads. there are more than 700 registered sex offenders in contra costa county. but we're not sure if this suspect is registered or not. back to you. teachers in alameda walked a picket line before heading to class. coming up in 12 minutes, the labor issues they are concerned about. sheriff investigators are continuing their yaund water search for any new clues in the disappearance of sierra lamar. as part of our continuing

coverage, allie rasmus is live in morgan hill in the location investigators are combing through right now and new information investigators are checking. >> reporter: right now, sheriff's underwater search teams are doing their work about a quarter mile away from us. they are down this dirt path. off to the left you can see where they have some of their vehicles, even a boat staged near this area. this is near monterey in morgan hill. investigators are using sonar equipment connected to their boats to look through an approximately five-acre pond. this, of cows, is all part of their -- of course, is all part of their search for 15-year-old sierra lamar. investigators already went through some of the res r voyeurs. new they are turning to -- reservoirs. now they are turning their attention to other ponds and streams located in this part of the county. this all comes as investigators follow up on new leads in sierra's disappearance. the new leads came from evidence recently tested at the crime lab.

there's a list of the evidence -- her cell phone, her purse, some articles of clothe ething an then -- clothing. and then a few weeks after that, someone discovered a backs with handcuffs and used condoms near her home. investigators say they cannot be specific where this new -- where these new leads came from and they cannot clarify exactly what was found. >> whether it's a dna print, a leighton print, or -- latent print, i -- it would be from one of those areas. >> reporter: now, sergeant cordoza says there are a dozen of ponds and waterways loosely connected to the water system. and the goal is to search through them all this week. in the meantime, volunteers including her family and the

klaas kids foundation plan to have their own search tomorrow morning at starting at burnett elementary. as the investigation continues grieving family and friends continue to mourn the death of presumed -- the presumed death of sailors. eight crew members were racing a yacht from san francisco around the islands on saturday when yaurnl waves knocked most of them overboard. four sailors replain at sea and the coast guard has called off the search. one body was recovered. three other sailors survived. a racer from a different sailing described conditions on the water as very rough on the day of the accident. >> we had ten-foot swells. they were confused seas. so it's challenging. and the wind conditions continued to build as you got closer to the islands. >> in fact, 17 racing yachts were forced to turn around rather than finish.

among the lost sailors, alexis busch, the batgirl on the left, who gave barry bonds a fist bomb of a his 500th home run. the family of jordan fromm said he was a champion young sailor. alan cahill, also missing, took care of boats at the san francisco yacht club. and friends describe mark kasanin as a fun-loving painter. the fifth victim, morrisey, he was visiting from ireland. in a statement one friend said the ocean is powerful and lacks the compassion that has been so generously bestowed by the family and friends and the community. we'll continue to ask questions that may never have answers. at ktvu.com, we've posted a

photo gallery of the victims from the boating gallery. you will find it under the news tab. important seismic upgrades have been completed on the bay area water system. alex savidge is live to tell us why this is considered a milestone for the hetch hetchy. >> reporter: well, the goal here to is protect the water supply in the event of a major quake and now the hetch hetchy has been seismically upgraded along the faultlines and that includes here where the san andreas fault is. today we got an upclose look at the damage as the manager david briggs took us on a tour. the transmission system has been made stronger to ensure water can float 2.6 million people on the peninsula even after a strong earthquake. today mayor lee was on hand as the p.u.c. announced the commission of this seismic work near the faultlines. it's all part of a 4.6 billion

the space shuttle made its final landing after making a fly-by over washington, d.c. nasa's oldest shuttle flew piggyback from cape canaveral, florida. thousands gathered to watch as it made three passes over washington monuments before landing at dullus. it will be now be displayed at the smithsonian's national air and space museum. >> it just is so rich with history that it's especially appropriate that it's here in the smithsonian.

driver seat and died at the scene. no other details about the victim have been released. police in oakland are looking for the gunman who wounded a store clerk during a robbery attempt. it happened last night at the east oakland dollar and more store on international boulevard near 86th. witnesses say about a dozen shoppers were in the store when the gunman approached the clerk, demanded money, and then shot her at very close range. police say the bullet grazed the woman's head but she's expected to survive. police say other clerks tried to stop the gunman but he managed to get away. the university of california announced a couple of hours ago that it is offered admission to a record number of out-of--state students. the -- out of state students. the system says the freshmen are from outside of california, 80,000 students. the university says there's increased competition from qualified students outside of

california. out of state and international students pay more -- pay three times the amount of tuition. alameda teachers hit the picket line before the classroom. >> good morning. thank you for your support. >> the teachers rejected a contract proposal two weeks ago from the alameda unified school district. they say the offer did not offset previous pay cuts and does not lower class sizes. >> i think the teachers just want to be a priority by the district. they want the students to be a priority and for the majority of the money to go to classrooms where it should go. the teachers only picketed before school began. the district said the rejected contract proposal guaranteed teachers more money for at least two years. both sides are now expected to return to the bargaining table. the tax deadline is looming. you need to file your federal and state tax returns one minute before midnight tonight.

lbgt and that number is expected to increase. a real estate brokerage firm says it expects vacancies in the silicon valley to drop below 3% this year. at the same time, silicon valley rents could go up by 7% compared to last year. with the high diamond, more renters are reportedly expected to head to the east bay but experts say there will be fewer vacancies there as well. and rents are expected to increase by 4%. the mayor of phoenix is hoping the bay area can boost business in his city. phoenix officials will travel to silicon valley in san francisco next week. they plan to try to entice companies who are considering relocating or expanding outside of california to head to phoenix. the mayor says partnering with technology and manufacturing companies would be mutually beneficial. he says he will not release the

names of any companies that will be approached. all lanes of doyle drive are set to reopen this noontime after bethe shut -- being shut down overnight for roadwork. the work began around 8:00 last night. it's part of a major project that will end the tire road being shut down and demolished at the end of the month. the work will continue for the next couple of weeks. caltran says the drivers should expect delays. one lane will be closed from 8:00 p.m. each night until noon the following day. a mix of sunshine and clouds outside our door at this hour. that's pretty much what we'll be stuck with today. some of us dealing with low clouds. some of us dealing with the high, wispy clouds. giving you a look outside of our roof cam, we're looking at, well, the low clouds. giving you a peek now, we're watching breaks in and around the east bay. hayward has turned partly cloudy to mostly sunny in the

last hour or so. but it shows you oakland just a second ago, still in gray and we're socked in pretty good along san francisco. you can see it inside the bay. the inland east bay dealing with partly cloudy skies mostly cloudy skies. the south bay dealing with mostly sunny skies but in the last hour or so has seen an increase of high clouds move into the area. 66 in livermore. 67 san jose, 64 in concord. so where he -- so where we are seeing the sunshine. 60s to coming upper 60s. 50s, 59 at sfo. 56 at the airport in oakland. and off to the north bay where we're dealing with low clouds and high clouds. 59 in napa. 59 in santa rosa. so those low clouds rolled in in the overnight hours. we've been stuck with them, at least some of us. but the satellite radar shows you where another system that will brush the area.

forecast shows you that today, tomorrow, the temperatures will finally begin to -- well, today slightly cooler. tomorrow we're warmer and then into the weekend. we're still looking atle the warm -- we're still looking at the temperatures in the 80s. >> a lot of people are ready for the warmup. today, the fda confirm that it a cupertino company is blamed for a salmonella outbreak that's saken -- that's sickened more than 120 people in 20 states. over the weekend, moon marine voluntarily recalled nearly 59,000 pounds of raw, yellow fin tuna. it's known as scrape used in spicy tuna rolls. the latest illnesses were reported last week but the centers for disease control says there may be more. no cases have been reported in california. moon marine has not commented. when we get back, you will hear why investors are in a good mood on wall street. new information today about a gun incident that could have been a scandal for the british royal family. honey...? stocks are soaring after promising signals about the profitability of u.s. economies and a strong debt auction. apple stock bouncing back at 4.5%. taking a like look at the big board, the dow is up 197. the long-time operator for the oakland coliseum complex is about to lose its contract.

the sports and entertainment company has been in sports communication for the past 13 years. its contract is up and now competing companies are submitting bids for controls. a company plans on recommending the five-year contract go to aeg. this would include oning -- running on rags -- running on rags at the oakland arena. new information about the gun and the photo with pippa middleton t was a toy gun pointed at the press as they drove through paris. that's according to a spokesman photographed in the car. they were reportedly joking with them as pippa was visiting. the authorities knew it was a fake and they are no longer investigating. what we are learning at -- about the tragedy at sea -- today at 5:00. the family of alan cahill will be speaking out.
