within the last 24 hours. i've spoken with many more of the victim's families, they tell me they're overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. >> reporter: former giant's executive cory bush who's daughter alexus is one of the wife's sailors. he said i know alex was watching and it made her smile. alex was on the field when barry bonds hit his 500th home run. the father also shared with us, her greatest joys in life were her family, friends and her partner nick voss. everyone more so than her love of baseball and the beatles. nothing will fill the void that alex left in the lives of everyone she touched but she will always be in our hearts and we hope in yours. a friend of another lost sailor allen cayhill says allen was a sailor at heart. >> he had a bit of a wrestlesness on solid ground. his energy was different when

he was on the water. it's tragic and sad but i look at the ocean differently knowing that he's with the ocean now. >> reporter: boy cayhill and moressee have been mentioned on some of the irish newspapers. and the family of jordan from said he was just weeks away from graduation and will be missed by so many. live in velvedere, karen lu. today chung says he's devastated by the loss of his crew members. he said in a statement quote the ocean is powerful and lacks the compassion that has been so generously bestowed by friends, family and the community. marine experts say the

her up. the principal says this was the second incident there in three weeks. >> this guy was a little more persistent this time. after she said no the first time he kept on pursuing her. that made it a little more scary for us. >> reporter: the man is being described as bald, heavy set, possibly of polanisian decent. the teachers held signs and rallied outside schools to highlight their disfraction with the district's latest contract proposal which the teachers union rejected last month. the teachers say the offer doesn't offset previous pay cuts or go nearly far enough to lower class sizes. >> our working conditions, what we experience every day, affects how the kids learn. and the fewer kids we have in the classroom the happier the teachers are, the better the kids learning environment is. >> within the last hour and

distribution center. it was another day of intense search efforts as volunteers continued to search for sierra lamar. robert handa is live now from today's main search area to tell us why investigators may have some reasons to be hopeful. >> reporter: there has been a lot of activity today mainly by search teams and divers here in these ponds. away from these waterways, investigators are also searching leads from possible evidence gathered from ground searches. in the midst of wildlife swarming around them today, the sheriff's under water search team continued to look for sierra lamar. investigators investigators investigators believe she was kidnapped. near by trailer park residents were shakened. >> i know the family wants

closure but we want closure that she's alive some where. >> reporter: this view from chopper 2 shows the numerous ponds that search teams are trying to cover using sonar imagery. >> if anything comes up suspicious or any areas of concern come about from some of the images that the dive team members see, they will send in dive members. >> reporter: the team saw something suspicious, but about an hour later, divers found that it was rock formations and shadows. crime lab results from items found show promise. investigators say the results are from items such as sierra's cell phone and her purse filled with clothing. >> there is some information, there are some leads that do require follow up. they are hoping that it does result into something significant. >> i just hope they find her. good or bad i just hope they find the little girl. >> reporter: the search here at coyote creek is wrapping up.

the divers plan to return tomorrow. a search from volunteers is scheduled tomorrow as well. sheriff's officials tell us that they have received more than 1,400 tips since sierra lamar disappeared. investigators are receiving dozens of tips every day and say that a team of detectives is working day and night to follow up on those potential leads. governor jerry brown says his investigation has uncovered more than 700 insignificant and outdated reports that the state conducts. the findings are part of a cost cutting review the governor ordered last year. today's office reviewed a list of items that are considered unnecessary. some of those include a monthly

review to the 1989 loma prieta earthquake. governor brown says the government should focus on information that's helpful to taxpayers. the dow has pushed to the largest point gain in a month. all three major indexes posted gains. the dow had its first finish above 13,000 in more than a week. the dow was up 193 points. and the s & p was up 21 points. presidential candidate mitt romney today won the support of the top republican in congress. house speaker john boehner said quote it is now clear mitt romney is going to be our nominee. >> i think mitt romney has a set of economic policies that can put americans back to work

authorities have identified the bodies of five in the contra concordia. two americans were identified, the others were two germans and one italian crew members. 32 people were killed when the ship capsized in january. when it's finished it'll cost nearly $5 billion. we're talking about work that's being done on a crucial bay area reservoir. and rob roth is there and takes us up close and explains why this project is so important especially in the event of an earthquake, rob. >> reporter: well frank actually we're able to take you up close at the crystal springs reservoir and dam. it's a rare look, the storage capacity has been increased by 2 billion-gallons as part of a multi billion dollars project to keep water flowing to the

bay area everyone after a major earthquake. on the eve of the anniversary of the 1983 earthquake, officials announced a $4.6 million seismic improvement. >> with the improvements that we're making can be restored within 24 hours. >> reporter: san francisco gets most of its drinking water from hetch hetchy. but it may pass through three major earthquake faults, the san andres, hayward and calav era s. >> we're on target and under budget to finish this project. >> reporter: without the seismic upgrade, city officials say a major jolt can jeopardize san francisco's water supply but the water supplies along the peninsula that also rely on hetch hetchy. >> these projects have brought

lots and lots of jobs to the tune of $23 million. >> reporter: we also received a tour of the dam wall. it has been raised. soon a road will be built over the damage making visits like this one nearly impossible. as of today the antioch bridge is a much safer span after a major earthquake retrofit. caltrans and toll officials today celebrated the completion of a seismic completion project. crews installed new bearings and casings and strengthened the bridge with steel casings. the project was funded through

bridge tolls. it's part of the larger program to seismically retrofit all of the state toll bridges in the bay area. three hours from now another shut down will begin on doyle drive near the golden gate bridge. the closures began last night and will continue nightly for about 10 days. the right hand northbound lane of doyle drive will close from 8:00 p.m. until noon on weekdays and 9:00 p.m. until noon on weekends. these are pictures of the construction crew early this morning. they began removing sections of sidewalk and old asbestos filled pipes for the complete closure a week from this friday. caltrans tells us the workers made good progress overnight and were able to reopen that closed northbound lane by 10:00 this morning. just a few hours from now, the walnut creek city council will consider a new climate action plan. the proposed measures include

in terms of our transit first policy. >> reporter: sunday meter parking is set to start january 1st next year. the mta board says it will try to think of ways to implement free nummi for all low income kids in the future. legislation was introduced today in san francisco to address the concern of aging gay, lesbian and transgender people in san francisco. it'll focus on how to meet the housing and health care needs of lgbt seniors. the task force will be asked to ma kecommendations over the next 18 months to the board of supervisors. >> there are some unique needs for lgbt seniors with health care, aging with hiv, senior facilities and programs etc., we need a plan for that. >> there are about 25,000lgbt older adults who live in san francisco and that number is expected to double over the next 18 years as the baby boomer generation ages. it started with a simple

middle income families. the president's orientation is to raise taxes and i happen to think that will slow economic growth which is already slow. >> pennsylvania holds its primary vote one week from today. stars, singers and musicians visited capitol hill today to lobby lawmakers for more money for the arts. the groups americans for the arts wants congress to increase funding to the national endownment for the arts from $107 million to 155 million next year. the group said the number of americans attending an arts event is up for the first time since 2003. in san francisco more than 45% of the adult population reported going to a museum in the previous year. the numbers are out, the reason fewer high school students from california were admitted to university of california campuses for the fall semester. plus it's an attempt to stop sexual relationships between teachers and students. the bill was voted on in

that's believed to be entang t angled in some fishing line. and that's some fishermen trying to free that trapped whale. the only information that we have is fishermen from trying to free that trapped whale. it's just north of san diego county. so it's a way aways from us. i just looked up in the archives here and apparently there was a similar rescue off the southern california coast here at the end of march. but at this point, this rescue is still ongoing. it looks like the gray whale is a number of feet ahead of this boat. but there are people on the boat trying to free this whale from the fishing line. we'll keep an eye on this rescue attempt and we'll let you know what's happening here on channel 2 news at 5:00 and coming up at 6:00. a bill aimed at stopping sexual relationships between california teachers and students we defeated today in sacramento. assembly bill 1861 would have made it a felony for any elementary or high school

employee to have a relationship with a student or send inappropriate communications regardless of that student's age. public school teachers convicted under the law would lose their pensions. >> can be victimized in school just because of the loophole in the law that says that an employee can woo them while they're a minor but not turn it into a sexual relationship until they are 18. >> reporter: lawmakers on the assembly committee on public safety who defeated the bill including tom amiano of san francisco said the measure needed more work. more out of state students will be attending classes at university of california campuses this fall. according to the than 23% of the incoming freshmen are from outside california. that's a big jump from last fall when 18% of newly admitted students were from out of state. those out of state at international students pay nearly three times more than california residents to attend uc. the admission rate for

california residents is down almost 4%. tonight the milpitas city council may grow a bag ban. they've adopted restrictions on single use plastic shopping bags. tonight the milpitas city council is expected to decide how to review the latest studies on such a ban as well as consider whether to move forward with plans to prohibit the use of to go containers made out of foam. spokers could soon face tougher restrictions when lighting up in one bay area city. san rafael city council is considering plans to beef up their smoking restrictions in apartment buildings and in outdoor areas including parks and atm lines. san rafael's existing code prohibits smoking in all enclosed public places and indoor common areas of multi unit residences. being happy may be good for your heart. scientists have long known that type a personalities and people

the space shuttle discovery made another picture perfect landing today riding piggy back on a jet airplane. this was the discovery's final voyage before arriving at the smitsonian. >> you can say today was the start of a new mission for discovery. the discovery made her final flight once again drawing crowds and drawing emotions as

she did each time she launched. >> reporter: discovery's final flight began with a beautiful lift off from cape canaveral florida. the most stunning sight came when the plane flew over the nation's capital. >> that is so cool. i didn't even know it was going to go behind that tree. >> reporter: discovery made three passes over the nation's capital, escorted by a navy flighting jet. they swooped over museums and seemed to brush the washington monument. tourists and workers alike seemed in awe. >> i grew up watching the space shuttle program. so it was something neat to see. >> reporter: discovery flew 39 missions more than any other shuttle and made her final last year. today she arrived to a heros welcome. >> this really does respect what is best about america.

coliseums for the past 14 years. but its lease is up and they are now taking applications. the deal would also require the company to run operations at the oakland arena. researchers at uc san diego have built a five story building and are testing to see how it holds up in an earthquake. we have some time lapse pictures to show you of that structure being built on top of a big shake table that will simulate quakes up to 8.8. the first test set for today was to simulate the motion of the 6.7 magnitude north ridge earthquake of 1994. back now to that breaking news off the coast in southern california. what you are looking at here are live pictures of a huge gray whale. it is entangled in a fishing net. it's actually been entangled since about 1:00 this afternoon. if the picture were to pan out here, maybe the helicopter

pilot will do that in a moment you can see there's a boat that this whale is essentially tugging along. the boat people on the boat trying to remove that fishing line from this whale. from what we understand, this is an older whale probably about 40 feet long. it's a gray whale and if you don't know gray whales are absolutely enormous. they can grow to 52 feet long, weigh 35-tons and they can live 50 to 70 years. we want to bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin now, how unusual or is it unusual to see a gray whale off the coast of california now. >> the reason we're going to these pictures, it's not in our area. these are incredible pictures. what we're seeing here, live camera coming from a chopper in los angeles. we're seeing a gray whale entangled in about 50 to 150 feet of fishing line or net. currently what we have they're trying to attach some buoys that have a zodiac on it. they're trying to keep up so

they can remove the fishing line. what the whales are doing. we see them off our coast a lot. these whales are moving north to the alaska where they feed. and they come and breed in the warm waters. the round trip migration is about 1,000 miles. the pictures are stunning. the whales migrated fairly close to shore. we've seen them off ocean beach, i've seen them right in the shallows in 20, 30 feet of water of the pacifica area. and so, a fishing net is something they might encounter and in fact, that's what we have here or a fishing line. 150feet of it. these people working furiously. they got a call at about 1:30 today to fix this situation. it's very dramatic video that's why we're showing it to you. the gray whale, as frank points

out they are big. and these folks that are helping are actually in some danger themselves because you see the proximity of that tale, if the whale were to flip around or lash at them not intentionally but because it's such a large fish or mammal it would be a big problem. it's a popular surfing area just south of laguna beach. water temperature in this area about 62 degrees. they're probably fairly close to shore. i haven't seen a picture of the shoreline yet, the migration pattern as these whales are moving north to feed they're probably fairly close to shore. so we're going to stay on this story. we know it's not right in our backyard. but you're going to see a lot of those pictures in the next few days because that's an amazing thing going on out there. we have spring weather to talk about. we're looking at cloud and low

a black labradore retriever is proving to be an internet sensation after refusing to leave its friend. here you see the black lab maggie laying on the road. people in this area are astounded at maggie's loyalty. >> people that have dogs understand the bond between people and the animal. but the bond between the animals is truly amazing. >> the story gets even more touching here. no one knows who the dog that maggie was guarding belongs to.
