afternoon. they show the boat low speed chase stranded on the islands. now that the coast guard search has been suspended the san francisco police department is taking over the investigation. >> our role is to find out if it was mechanical, if it was nature, or weather related or whether it was human error that caused this tragedy. >> reporter: the san francisco police department has jurisdiction of the island. now they are interviewing the survivors. >> the captain has not been interviewed yet. we would like to talk to witnesses first. >> reporter: the boat is still at the crash site. police say there is no environmental hazard. >> the boat will remain there until the insurance company or someone responsible will go pick that vessel up. >> reporter: ted goldback is a member of the yacht club and knew cayhill and namen. >> they are both wonderful men

and great sailors. it's just a tragedy. >> reporter: the crew of the low speed chase was experienced and had respect for the ocean he says. but knew the ocean could be unpredictable and sometimes deadly. >> whether you are here in the bay or out of the bay, unfortunately sometimes there are just accidents. and some end up tragic and sometimes you come out. >> reporter: san francisco police say the investigation can take any where from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to complete. reporting live in tiburon, matt keller, ktvu news. the somber tribute to the five lost sailors is growing tonight outside the san francisco yacht club. karen lu is live now with special words from the victim's families. >> reporter: i want to show you people are continuing to add to this memorial outside of the yacht club. father -- some had personal connections to the sailors others just wanted to show

support. a moment of silence at last night's giant's game spoke volumes. alex was on the field when barry bonds hit his 500th home run. her father also shared, nothing will fill the void that alex left in the life of everybody she touched but she will always be in our hearts and we hope in yours. cayhill was called a sailor at heart that lit up the room when he walked in. >> he was so generous, so thoughtful. the fact that he was an irish made everything he said sound like poetry. >> reporter: the mother of cayhill said, i will miss him very much, he was a tremendous

help for me. and a big memorial on the water honoring the victims is in the works. live in belvedere cara liu. in a written statement released this morning bryan chong says, the ocean is powerful and lacks the compassion that has been so generously bestowed by friends, family, neighbors and the sailing community. our coverage continues on ktvu.com where you will find the very latest into the investigation into that sailing accident. authorities in contra costa county are looking for a gunman following a drive by shooting this afternoon. the shooting happened in north richmond at the corner of market avenue and fifth street. as you can see, sheriff's deputies marked a large number of bullet casing outside the rancho market. so far we have no description

of the suspect or suspects or their vehicle. happening now, we're continuing to follow the dramatic efforts to rescue a huge gray whale caught in fishing line. we want to show you some pictures taken a couple of minutes ago. this has been going on since about 1:15 this afternoon when a rescue team received a call that a 40-foot long gray whale was in serious distress. the mammal center has sent out crews and they're trying to cut the fishing line off of that whale. we will keep you posted if we get new information on this situation. we have new details now to report about a gunman who's body was found inside a burning house in modesto last week after a long stand off with police. the coroner identified the gunman as 45-year-old richard ferrario. investigators say ferrario shot and killed a sheriff deputy and another man and was preparing for a violent confrontation with police.

police say ferrario was wearing a gas mask and bullet-proof vest and he died from a self- inflected gunshot wound. now to the ongoing search for sierra lamar. santa clara county search and rescue members used sonar to check ponds in coyote creek park. the day long search unfortunately did not turn up any new evidence. divers plan to return tomorrow. the 15-year-old disappeared on her way to school back on march 15th. >> ladies and gentlemen you need to fix this broken system so that the victimization of my daughter can finally end. despite emotional testimony from mark class who's daughter polly was killed nearly three

years ago the effort failed. by a vote of 4-2 the senate committee rejected legislation. the federal judge halted executions in california because of what he saw as flaws in the execution process. state lawmakers have given initial approval to a measure that could make it easier to open medical marijuana dispensaries across california. a committee approved a bill that would shift dispensaries from the local level to the state level. that would mean that pot clubs could conceivably operate in cities that have banned them. residents in an antioch residence are relieve tonight now that squatters have left a foreclosed home. ktvu's ken pritchett is live there tonight where he went inside the house tonight to see

just what it looked like there, ken. >> reporter: frank when the squatters moved out yesterday they took some of their property with them but as you can see they left a lot behind. there are tires here in the front yard, pizza boxes, you can see the garage is still full of debris. tvs, the garage door that was busted on their way out. we're told by neighbors and this pile of debris well it's actually not a pile of degree it is garbage stacked on top of a car that was left behind. and the inside is even worse than the outside. the graffiti you might expect, the same with a hole in a wall here or there. but in this house there are holes in almost every wall even one big enough for a child to slip through from one room to the next. and there were children here. this a report card pinned on the fridge. >> i'm glad they're gone, i'm glad they're gone. >> reporter: tom pierson is one of many relieved neighbors to see the squatters gone. >> these people are just animals. they steal for a living, they steal a house to live in for free. >> reporter: pierson says for months neighbors reported the

squatters to police but only after ktvu came by on friday our news crew confronted by a pit bull and a man in a hockey mask that they were forced out. >> so this is what they've left behind. some couches, just odds and ends junk. >> reporter: able says they have been trying to evict the squatters and the extra attention sped up the process. now along with piles of junk and pots of caked food to clean up, his pane must make costly repairs including redoing an upstairs decorated in shards of glass. >> this is one of the worse ones that i've come across so far. >> reporter: we're told the two adults and as many as three children may have lived here but that dozens of people may have lived here over the past year. as for all of this mess, the new ownersover that -- owners say they will have it cleared out by tomorrow which will be a

relief for neighbors here in the neighborhood. it was a show down between google and oracle over of the ware patents. larry ellison and larry page testified in federal court in san francisco. oracle claim that is google's android software violates java software. google argues that parts of java it used are publicly available. new figures revealed just how much or how little many tech companies paid in income taxes last year. a nonprofit in berkeley found apple the world's most available company paid 9.8% in income taxes for 2011. yahoo paid 11% and amazon paid only 3-1/2%. the marginal tax rate for corporations is 35% but loopholes enable some companies to pay much less. a new environmental report is taking aim at tech giants for creating a cloud of solution.

green peace says in the race to develop cloud commuting which enables users to store information they're causing pollution. apple got a d, twitter received an f. californians have until one minute after midnight to file their taxes or ask for an extension. controller chung says about 11 million californians are expected to file on time and it's not too late to get help. >> the key point to remember today is the franchise tax force is available to help people. >> reporter: the franchise tax force has a free hot line. you can find more information

on ktvu.com under the business tab. governor jerry brown had a message today for those waiting until the last minute to file their taxes. >> pay your taxes. i paid mine yesterday. >> so late? >> yeah. well the message is you have to pay your taxes that's all. and in california of course we're massively cutting the budget. >> and as for that budget, brown today released a list of hundreds of annual reports that he has ordered the state to stop producing to save money. this truck is a advertising for the hustler club. but some say it's spending entirely too much time in one place. >> back here in 10 minutes, we have a little bit of coastal fog to talk about. we'll go looking for rain in the five day forecast.

this is a live look now at the waters off san onofre just south of laguna beach. incredible pictures as crews are trying to free a gray whale that got tangled in some netting. there's a boat trailing behind the whale. this whale appears to be an older whale. this rescue began a little after 1:00 this afternoon. as you can see here it's still going on. we're going to continue to watch it and monitor it. if we get any new information on this we will let you know. police patrolled a local middle school as a girl says that a man tried to lure her. the mount diablo school district notified families by phone today. the principal says this is the second incident in three weeks. >> this guy was a little more

persistent this time. after she said no the first time, she kept on pursuing her. that made it a little scarier for us. the man is described as bald and heavy set with a black mustache. some call it a public nuisance others say it's down right obscene. the hustler club mobile advertising club is prompting action. >> reporter: the truck is advertising the club here behind me. although we didn't see the club truck on the street today we did find out it was in town over the weekend. san francisco supervisor says he's had enough. mark took the pictures of this hustler truck. the driver often parks it right outside this library which is half a block from the elementary school. >> in a neighborhood where there's a school, kids, you

know five, 10 kids. you know it's really wrong. >> it has pictures of scandally clad women and a stripper pole in the middle of it. many people feel it's not appropriate for our neighborhood. >> it's not like the school kids are going to be like, oh yeah man that's a great idea. let's go down to the hustler club, that's not going to happen. >> reporter: his problem with the truck is its lack of safety for the dancers. the vehicle is always outside the adult club where he works in the weekend, he goes on to say the club should have expected this type of backlash from the community. >> what kind of idiot do you have to be to park the thing out there in the first place. >> reporter: the supervisor asked the club to get rid of the club, but it keeps reappearing. the supervisor says police has already cited the truck. as for management here at the

hustler club they do not care to talk about this story. a state senate committee has postponed a vote. the committee heard about an hour of testimony before putting off the vote. critics say the $68 billion cost is still too high. san francisco transit agency this afternoon approved a controversial plan to start charging meter fees on sundays. san francisco clergy members say the plan to enforce parking is a slap in the face to worshipers. munni says it wants to encourage people to take public transit rather than drive. the municipal transportation agency also voted this afternoon to launch a 22 month pilot program starting in august to provide free rides on nummi to low income children. the university of california says it has offered admission to a record number of

out of state under graduates. the uc system says more than 23% of freshman admitted to the nine campus system are from outside california. that's more than 80,000 students. out of state and international students paid three times more than instate residents. ktvu received a rare up close look at the progress being made on the crystals spring reservoir and dam. the work on that reservoir is part of a $4.6 billion seismic upgrade of the hetch hetchy water system. county officials are looking at ways to meet state requirements mandating that 1/3 of california's energy come from renewable sources by the year 2020. another nice day here, speaking about the weather and

our chief meteorologist bill martin is at the weather center now. maybe some 80s later in the week. >> as we go down the road these next couple of days, coastal fog. that coastal fog is going to stick around tonight into the evening hours. when i see the clouds, i think that's a spring weather pattern. that shows me that it's keeping the rain to the north and keeping us dry. right now in san jose downtown, 65 degrees. we can go a little closer and check out redwood city area. it's about the same today maybe a little cooler, maybe a little warmer depending on where you were. tomorrow you will notice a warm up and you will notice it each subsequent day. tomorrow low coastal fog, tomorrow warmer. the extended forecast dry. there's really no rain in the five day forecast to speak of. a little something earlier next week.

as the days get longer, the jet stream starts to pull up. that's why you see the rain in the bay area. this is february, or everyone january you would see this system a little further south, we would be forcasting rain. we get drier pattern as the days get longer. when you see the fog, it tells you you need the high pressure to stretch out. temperatures on the increase into the 80s as we go into later this week. clouds for tonight and a little bit going on tomorrow morning then some clearing. looks like the coastal gets some clearing on wednesday. a few high clouds drifting in and out. but high pressure firmly where it should be this time of year. this is pretty typical pattern. 76 in antioch, 76 in brentwood. 75 in morgan hill, 73 in santa cruz. so coastal fog when you get up

being chosen as an alternate for the fencing competition. she was also an alternate in the bay -- beijing competition. the sharks have quite a bit of prove come thursday. they're only down in the series 2-1. it feels worse because they've taken on the blues seven times this year and they lost six. thornton, pevelsky completely shut down to put it lightly, those guys are going to have to start making some noise real quick if the sharks are to have a chance in this series. >> we're in a spot to make the play, so we have to figure that out. it might just be winning a few more battles and winning a few
