desk. in overnight news a woman is in the hospital after a fire started inside her emeryville apartment. claudine wong is here top talk about the household appliance that started the fire. >> reporter: that woman is expected to be okay. the fire happened in the apartment behind me. scary moments. firefighters have cleared the scene. one resident may be having trouble getting back to sleep. it was just after 1:30 this morning. anne said she was drying clothes just before 1:30 when she smelled something funny. she went to check it out that's when she smelled fire. >> i had been drying clothes and i smelled something. i got up and started looking around. while i was looking around the alarm went off. and then i really looked then

by went into the washroom when i went into the washroom i could see the smoke in the drier. >> reporter: anne said she called 911 when she opened the drier and found flames. two of her neighbors came to help billion fire extinguishers. the smoke was enough to take her to the hospital to be checked out. payne was more concerned at this point calming herself down when our crew talked to her. certainly grateful this morning it wasn't worse. we have now learned east bay police had prior contact with the suv involved in a fatal crash that killed a father and daughter. on april 7th police say a white cadillac escalade sped down a street in concord.

officers arrested the 17-year- old behind the wheel. now a walnut creek police log shows officers pull over that same suv one week before and cited a juvenile for narcotics and weapons. >> young people maybe they don't know what can happen if they don't drive responsiblely and it's unfortunate that something like this happens. is that how they have to learn they're lesson? >> ktvu tried to talk to the suspects father outside his home but he did not want to go on camera. oakland police are urging witnesses to step forward in a tragic killing of a young father. tyrell smith was shot so death while taking an afternoon walk with his one-year-old son. homicide investigators say someone drove up in a car shot him several times and drove off. the toddler who was in a toy

car was not hurt. police are now checking surveillance video to try to determine what lead up to that shooting. memorials will be held today and form for the five sailors that died near a yacht race. they will hole a moment of silence and tomorrow a memorial is planned on the waters of raccoon strait. ross mirkarimi is due back in court this morning. a judge in san francisco is expected to issue a final ruling on whether the suspended sheriff has a chance of getting back his job. late yesterday the judge issued a tentative ruling indicating he did not intend to stop mayor ed lee's efforts to remove mitigating circumstance rheumy

to shut down a motel suspected of being a hub for prostitution. if the city is successful, the economy in on east 12th street could be forced to close for a year. they also want to shut down on the national lodge but the judge has not ruled on that request yet. prostitution and child sex trafficking has be a problem at both locations for a year. later today the city of san francisco is turning on a new stoplight near san francisco state. 20-year-old stacy cross was hilt and killed while walking in a crosswalk there. the ceremony to activate the stoplight will also commemorate her life. they have been serving customers for more than 100 years now a san francisco institution is closing.

golden gate bridge. it's unusual because i've been looking at all my other traffic pictures. here on the golden gate span it's a little foggy. i will let steve fill you in on that westbound bay bridge no fog at all it's clear. and traffic is looking good against the deck. northbound 280 traffic getting up to highway 17 that looks good. at 4:39 here is steve. >> i remember last friday. pouring. and now here we are talking about 80-degree temperatures. up and over everything. it has been doing its work. it's kicking in. temperatures are already sitting around 60 degrees for some. patchy fog there and high pressure sitting on top of it it's very, very shallow. there is no sea breeze. sfo is calm.

north at santa rosa 52 there. a little cooler napa. everybody is in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. it won't take much to get going here. the pattern up and over that system deepens into the gulf. sunny and warm. if you are 87 degrees i would say that is pretty warm to hot. 86 santa rosa. 82 san rafael. 74 berkeley. still on the coast there is some of an offshore breeze. 80s across the board. santa cruz will be 80. redwood city 82. 82 in san jose. sunny side up and warm. sunday will still be nice but we will start that cool down on the coast and around the bay. next week is looking cooler. >> all right thank you.

good morning. patchy fog on the coast. temperatures are already sitting in upper 50s to near 60s. 65 pacifica. 85 morgan hill to 87 in antioch. >> thank you, steve. 4:44 is the time. a black hawk helicopter with four u.s. troops on board has crashed in afghanistan. the crash was reported in the south western part of the country. u.s. defense official says it's possible the helicopter was shot down by enemy fire early indications are that weather may have been a factor. the military has not yet released information about the possible casualties on board. this morning searches will resume for 15-year-old santa rosa girl. there are troubling clues that have increased the urgency. last night they canvassed spring lake park by ground and air for char let. the teenager was last seen on

sat. she told her dad she was going ton a bike ride but never came home. detectives say entries on her computer suggest she was depressed. >> finding more information on the internet searches led us to believe we should increase our efforts to find her. >> searches at spring lake park at a nearby cemetery will resume at 8:00 this morning. this time the help of search dogs. she looked up directions to the park on her computer which is about seven miles from her home. specially trained search teams will search southern santa clara county tomorrow for any clues for sierra lamar. tomorrow search teams will focus on hills and rough terrain. investigators have also been searching local reservoirs and other bodies of water. police in new york city say they may be close to a break in

a 30-year-old cold case involving a missing boy. six-year-old etan patz. at the time it crew national attention and he became one of the first person to appear on thousands of milk cartons across the country. now police say they have received a new tip in the case. investigators plan to dig up a concrete basement in an apartment building. >> it will be a systematic removal of things like dry wall, digging up of the basement. breaking the concrete and getting to the dirt underneath. >> investigators say they will search the basement for blood, clothing, or human remains. today is the anniversary of one of the deadliest school shootings in u.s. history. 13 years ago today two students went on a shooting rampage at

orlando centennial. santa clara county district attorney has charged two nonperiod of time executives with grand theft for siphoning off of more than there are 1 million -- more than $1 million of retirement money. the two stopped making payments into employee retirement funds between 2004 and 2009. the money allegedly went toward their other expenses. their attorney says they were trying to keep the nonprofit going. pg&e has been fined $17 million to conduct safety tests on miles of pipeline. the commission says some stretches of pipe haven't been tested for leaks in nearly ten

welcome back. time is 4:53. university of colorado will end the annual rally celebrating all things marijuana. last year on april 20th or 4/20 more than 4,000 people gathered to smoke campus. anyone on campus without a valid student id could be ticketed for trespassing. 4:54 is the time. 4/20, sal. >> pam, i have one little factoid about that school. the university sprayed fish fertilizer on that open ground to keep people from gathering. >> oh my. just to create a little extra smell. >> yeah. just to keep people away.

good friday morning to you. let's go outside and well right now westbound 24 looks pretty good as you drive up to the caldecott. steve is reminding you that last friday at this time it was like winter. it was raining. today it's almost like summer. some temperatures reaching near 60 degrees. steve has a weekend forecast. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza it looks pretty good. needless to say driving around for the most part will be nice. san francisco is clear. we do have patchy fog near the golden gate bridge and parts of western san francisco and san mateo county. if you are driving near fog just be careful. for the most part it's clear driving. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. there is patchy fog and what is there is shallow. it may be tough right there near the coast.
