tv   Mornings on 2  FOX  April 20, 2012 7:00am-9:00am PDT

7:00 am
nearly a week. what investigators found on her computer that have them very concerned about letter safety. >> a critical court hearing underway right now in the trayvon martin case. the shooter could soon be leaving jail. >> also an overnight apartment house fire in the east bay, the quick thinking that may have prevented a tragedy. mornings on 2 begins right now! good morning to you! welcome to mornings on 2. it's friday, april 20th. and let's go right to sal, who is following a huge problem on the san mateo bridge. two big crashes and one involves a chp squad car. sal. >> reporter: that's right, westbound 92, the original crash happened at 6:00, where a big rig was stalled, was hit by a -- i'm sorry, a pickup was stalled, hit by the big rig on the right. the big rig was demolished, we may have lost our shot of the chopper so we'll go to the shot
7:01 am
we have now of the san mateo bridge, which is a complete stop. so the big rig hit a pickup truck that was stopped, and caused a huge crash. now, eastbound as the chp and a firetruck had stopped on the bridge, someone apparently not paying attention ran into the back of a squad car, and that squad car was then pushed into a firetruck. eastbound 92, there was another multi-car crash that happened at about 6:45 this morning, so the bridge is a mess. we advise you to avoid the san mateo bridge. we need to you use the dumbarton bridge or bay bridge, as an alternative, and those other bridges are fine so just keep going, don't go on on the san mateo bridge. you see on the right there, the bridge at a standstill on the westbound direction, and only one lane is getting through eastbound. we'll have more on this story, and one more thing -- there was a fuel spill as well, so the coast guard has been called and they're now on the bay heading to the scene.
7:02 am
back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. happening now, santa rosa sheriff's deputies preparing to conduct another search for a missing 15-year-old girl. allie rasmus joins us live from spring lake park with the reason investigators are concerned she may be in danger. >> reporter: investigators found the teen's journal, and in one of entries she may have been depressed before she came to this park. this is spring lake park in santa rosa, where this is where the search will start about an hour from now. they've got their command post set up here. but investigators are really focusing their search efforts today on this state park, a pretty large 2000-acre wilderness that extends into the hills. and that's where investigator will be focusing their efforts today. this area is where 15-year-old charlotte molinari told her family she was going for a bike ride that. was on saturday morning. her friends, family and classmates have not seen her since then. yesterday investigators and volunteers searched part of
7:03 am
this area by land and by air looking for the teen. so far the search has not turned up anything of interest. molinari can't center a history of running away but now that it's been nearly a week since she's been gone, police are concerned there's no sign of her on any of the trails in the park. >> an dell state park is a pretty heavily used park with a lot of hikers and mountain bikers daily. so if she was up in there on the trail, we should have found something by now. >> reporter: investigators will go on areas off the trail today to continue their search. she is 5-foot 9, 150 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, last seen on her mountain bike carrying a green backpack and wearing a dark blue knee length coat. and back out here live, this is the sheriff's command post in spring lake park, adjacent to
7:04 am
an adele state park. they'll start their work about an hour from now. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. specially trained search teams will be in southern santa clara county tomorrow looking for any clues in the disappearance of sierra lamar. she has been missing for five weeks. tomorrow search teams will focus on hills and rough terrain in morgan hill and gilroy. investigators have also been searching local reservoirs and other bodies of water. in overnight news, an elderly woman is in the hospital after a fire in her emeryville apartment. investigators say the fire started in a dryer just before 1:30 this morning on 40th street. a woman says her smoke alarm went off and she then found a flame. two neighbors in the complex then jumped into action. >> the neighbor came and they really was a big help too. they came with the extinguisher because i didn't have one inside the apartment.
7:05 am
and they brought theirs down here. two of them. and they came in and extinguished it. >> an ambulance took the elderly woman to the hospital for smoke inhalation. she is expected to be okay. happening right now in florida, a bail hearing continues in the florida courtroom for george zimmerman. we're there looking in live. we're on the back of the right behind -- the defense lawyers right there. the neighborhood watch volunteer is the man who is charged with second-degree murder in the february shooting of trayvon martin, an unarmed teenager. zimmerman's family is testifying here this morning by phone. they're trying to convince the judge to release zimmerman on bail. his mother is being questioned right now as we're speaking. zimmerman's wife testified first. she said she does not think her husband is a threat to the public. however, prosecutors asked her about a previous incident where they think her husband attacked
7:06 am
an undercover officer. again, we're in front of george zimmerman right now. that's him sitting next to the man who just stood up. that's his attorney. zimmerman's father has also testified by phone. we'll keep you posted on what happens in this bail hearing. back here at home, ross mirkarimi, the suspended san francisco sheriff, is due back in court this morning for a very critical hearing that could determine his political future. a judge in san francisco is expected to issue a final ruling from weather mirkarimi has a chance of getting his job back. late yesterday, the judge issued a tentative ruling indicating he did not intend to stop san francisco mayor ed lee's efforts to remove mirkarimi from office. the ktvu claudine wong is outside the courthouse right now. she will have a live report on all of this coming up in our next half hour. now learned east bay police had prior contact with the suv involved in a fatal crash that killed a father and daughter. on april 7th, police say a
7:07 am
white cadillac escalade sped down treat boulevard in concord. investigators seay the suv veered on to the sidewalk and hit 41-year-old suleman doori and his nine-year-old daughter. officers arrested the 17-year- old behind the wheel. now a walnut creek police log shows officers pulled over the same suv one week before and cited a juvenile for narcotics and weapons. >> saw the police white suv -- they had a dog in the suv sniffing around, then the police spent quite a while going through the suv themselves. >> ktvu tried talking to the suspect's father outside his home but he did not want to go on camera. no charges have been filed yet in the deadly crash, and police say the investigation continues. your daily commute may soon become a longer one. in an effort to improve the bay area's air quality, officials may consider reducing the
7:08 am
freeway speed limits. >> i don't mind them dropping the speed limit. i'm looking at safety, people on the road as well as our health. so i could see them doing that. >> according to the bay area air quality management district, lowering the maximum limit to 55 miles an hour could reduce emissions 6% by the year 2035. that would be the equivalent of taking 300,000 cars off the road. that changes is one of ideas considered to help the bay area reduce greenhouse gases. the chp says changing the speed limit would likely require state legislation being passed. they're driving a lot slower than 55 on the san mateo bridge, with accident now in both direction. >> the first crash happened at 6:00, when a big rig apparently hit a stalled pickup truck and caused a big wreck. the second crash involved a
7:09 am
minivan that hit a chp car. the minivan and several other cars got into it. someone was injured in that crash, and it looks like the police cruiser that was sandwiched in between the van and truck is super badly damaged there, again one person was injured. it could have been seemed as if perhaps someone was not paying attention and ran into the back of the firetruck and the emergency vehicles. the first crash, the first truck that was involved, did leak some fuel, and that fuel is now on the san francisco bay. the coast guard has been alerted. that truck has gone. there's the pickup truck that was rear-ended by the big rig. it's also very badly damaged. again in the first crash, no one was hurt. in the second crash there were injuries. the medics vehicles still on the scene. i want to show you a picture of the stopped san mateo bridge. it's stopped now. someone tweeted me from the car, saying i'm not moving. i tweeted them because they probably can't see me on tv. but don't use the san mateo
7:10 am
bridge. use the dumbarton bridge. 880 is slow towards 84. i would still use that. south bay has a crash apart from this incident, northbound 101 to de la cruz and slow traffic there. i think the rest of the south bay looks good, though. and as we move up to peninsula, if you're driving on 101 into san francisco, let's say down the peninsula from san francisco, it looks good. now ktvu's alex savage just arrived on the scene near the san mateo bridge. >> reporter: we see traffic backed up beyond us here, just as you approach the san mateo bridge. this is what you're looking at here is the eastbound direction, and this all started with a pair of accidents and it began with this truck to the left. you can see this cost co big rig that's pulled off to the side, a caltrans truck tow truck just towed that big rig to the side. it began when that big rig apparently hit another stalled car on westbound 92, around 6:00 this morning.
7:11 am
two right lanes were closed at that point. the truck was spilling some fuel. doesn't sound like anyone was hurt in the original crash. then what happened was we had a second accident, and we're showing you pictures from chopper 2 from up above. there was a second crash apparently on the eastbound side of things. someone may be rubber-necking, something along those lines, hit a chp cruiser are and then in turned that chp cruiser ran into the back of a firetruck. we do understand someone may have been hurt in the accident. we don't know if it was the chp officer, someone in the firetruck or the person in the private vehicle that ran into the back of the chp cruiser. but someone has been hurt. we don't know the extent of the injuries. working to try to reach out to the chp, get more information on the extent of the injuries here. but again, essentially we only have one lane in each direction open on the 98 bridge. a good idea to avoid the 98 san
7:12 am
mateo this morning. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> good information. with all of that on the san mateo bridge. let's go to steve now, get you ready for the forecast. >> thank you very much. we do have clear skies, except thick fog by the coast. foghorn sounding this morning for those near the coast. highway 1. but inland it's already clear and it will be sunny and warm. 50s for everybody here. 58 in san jose. 58 in concord. so that doesn't take long to start warming. up. lots of 70s yesterday. today the orange indicates 80, widespread today it even warmer tomorrow, maybe inland locations close to 90. probably more mid to upper 80s today. the source of the warm-up is a system in the gulf of alaska. that just fires a ridge of high pressure over us. this system will break off and meander off here until about sunday evening, monday, then get closer and we'll see an increase in the fog and cooldown early next week.
7:13 am
but today and tomorrow everything says sunshine and warmer weather, except the fog. that's a select few. but warm to hot. warm to hot. temperatures 60s, 70s to low 80s, coast and bay. mid-80s inland. temperatures will continue to inch upwards there. when you're 58 degrees, won't take long to start warming up. there's no sea breeze for most. so mid-80s, 70s alameda, 74. 86 gilroy. 82 san jose. 80 santa cruz. but little bit too much fog, so 60s on the coast for many. 72 officially san francisco. san mateo, millbrae, burlingame, redwood shores, upper 70s. and low 80s. redwood city, woodside, palo alto, menlo park and mountain view. warm it not warmer on saturday. here comes some fog sunday, then it starts a cooldown monday. everybody in on it monday. it's 7:13. a midair scare on a plane bound for los angeles. what happened after a bird strike knocked out one of the
7:14 am
plane's engines. also heated testimony in sacramento, why the microphone of mark klaas was cut off and he stormed out of a hearing with state lawmakers. the details are coming up. >> how can we make the republican view some limited government -- >> why there's such a tension over eight slip of the tongue by this u.s. senator. never in my lifetime did i think i could walk 60 miles in 3 days. if my mom can fight and beat breast cancer, i can walk 60 miles. (woman) the fund-raising was the easiest part. people were very giving. complete strangers wanting to help.

7:16 am
here is the latest update on the breaking news we have on the san mateo bridge westbound 92 on the bottom and eastbound 92 on the top. we only have one lane open in each direction of this san mateo bridge at the high-rise because of an earlier crash. you can see firefighters are attending with someone involved in an eastbound collision, which happened after the first crash. so the first crash happened at about 6:00, the last one at
7:17 am
6:45, where apparently someone ran into the back up chp cruiser, which then rear ended a firetruck. eastbound 92 one lane blocked. westbound 92 also a fuel spill as a result of this crash. we'll have more coming up. now let's go back to the desk. pretty scary situation, a bird strike forced a delta airlines flight to make an emergency landing in new york. and there's cell phone video from a passenger that captured it happening. you can actually see it and hear it. all this happened yesterday afternoon shortly after that los angeles bound plane took off from jfk airport in new york. 172 passengers and seven crewmembers were onboard. with only one engine, the plane landed safely about 20 minutes later. >> all right.
7:18 am
>> you remember back in 2009, danville pilot sully surgical bering safely landed that plane on the hudson river after bird strikes knocked out both engines. we're learning a lot more about some of the secret service agents who have lost their jobs in the prostitution scandal. and as ktvu's allison burns reports, more agents could be getting the ax today. >> reporter: members of congress getting briefed on this scandal expect more firings or resignations as a result of lie detector tests come in. three agents have been ousted so far. here's a facebook post from one of them. supervisor david cheney was protecting vice presidential candidate sarah palin in 2008, and commented on the post -- i was really checking her out, if you know what i mean. the new york post also has one of pictures of one of call girls who exposed the scandal.
7:19 am
she's a 24-year-old. on capitol hill, members of congress are demanding to know how the agency let this happen. >> it's a stunning thing. it's actually disgusting. there has to be an investigation to see how this could have happened and those responsible should have to pay a price. >> 11 agents are under investigation but now the entire secret service is under new scrutiny. reporting live from washington, d.c., allison burn, ktvu channel 2 news. florida senator marco rubio continues to insist he doesn't want to be mitt romney's vice president al running mate. however, a slipup he made is making his less convincing. >> three, four, five years from now if i do a good job as vice president -- i'm sorry! [laughter] you all got that, right? if i do a good job as a senator instead of a vice president, i'll have a chance to do all
7:20 am
sorts of things. >> now, some republicans actually like the idea of rubio as mitt romney's running mate. however, hoping they -- it would help deliver the latino vote. a girl kidnapped from her father six years ago in southern california has finally been found in virginia. stephanie con joe vanished from los angeles in 2006. she was six years old at the time. now sheriff's officials in virginia say they found the now 12-year-old girl with her mother. mother is now in custody and facing multiple charges. she is expected to be extradited back to california. new york city police say they may finally be close to a break in a 30-year-old cold case. six-year-old etan vanished in may 1979, the case drew national attention and patz became the first child to appear on thousands of milk cartons across the country. now police received a new tip in the case, investigators plan
7:21 am
to dig up a concrete basement in an apartment building after a cadaver sniffing dog picked up the scent of human remains. missing child advocate mark klaas is telling his side of the story after a heated tirade in california's state capitol. >> year after year after year, how much does it cost to house richard allen davis on death row -- >> klaas went into the tirade on tuesday during his testimony on the death penalty. he is angry a committee killed two bills that could speed up the death penalty process. >> there's a worse people on earth. they've committed some of the worst crimes ever committed. yet they've got an entire legislature up here in sacramento that is hell-bent on protecting them. >> klaas stormed out of the hearing following his tirade. the chief sergeant of arms says he understands people sometimes
7:22 am
get loud. everybody making plans for the weekend, the temperature is rising. look outside our window. steve about tell you which day will be the warmest day of weekend. it's not something you see every day, in a major league baseball game. what happened after a young child ran on to the field. >> good morning. the san mateo bridge is a mess in case you're just joining us, do not use it. we'll tell you what happened there to make it such a mess. [ girl ] my mom always tells me:
7:23 am
if you want something done right, then do it yourself. that's the idea behind our children, our future -- the ballot initiative to fix our schools. we've waited years for the politicians to do it. now, we can do it ourselves. our children, our future sends every k through 12 dollar straight to our schools... not to sacramento. it benefits every kid in every school, with local control of the money. that's why the p-t-a supports it. my mom likes it, too.
7:24 am
chicago white sox officials ejected a child and his family from the ballpark yesterday after the young boy ran on to the field during the 7th inning. the boy appeared to be about five years old. white sox left-fielder dion picked him up and handed him off to an usher. they took the boy to his parents. the family was asked to leave after it was determined the boy had been allowed to run down
7:25 am
the aisle and on to the feelle field without being stopped by his guardian. keep the kids under control! have to! we've got major traffic problems in the san mateo bridge. how bad is it now, sal? >> here's the latest on the san mateo bridge. and just got -- your message, we can message each other. the san mateo bridge indeed will be closed westbound for several hours, and i'll tell you why. as our newschopper 2 shows us, these live pictures, westbound 92 there's a fuel spill, where the big rig was involved in the first crash. eastbound 92, there was a multi- car crash involving a chp officer rear-ended. championship cruiser rear- ended. ran into the back of a firetruck, and someone was injured. so there will be an investigation but westbound, see that sheen there on the lanes? it's going to take them some time to clean. the fuel. so that's why this crash is going to close lanes on that
7:26 am
san mateo bridge for several more hours. this is a look from foster city, eastbound 92, trying to get over to hayward. would not recommend you doing this. in fact, these people who are in this backup, probably wish they hadn't gotten there. if you haven't gotten there yet, don't go on the san mateo bridge. our photographer panned to the left, that's the traffic coming from 92-101 so don't use it. go to the dumbarton or through san francisco instead. to other traffic, contra costa heavy traffic on highway 4, bay point as well. but 680 looks pretty good. and if you're driving on 880 from hayward to fremont, it's a little busier. people may be avoiding the san mateo bridge. i want to look at the south bay, where northbound 101 clearing. a crash near the airport but 280 only slow near 17. and 85 looks good. let's go to steve. >> thank you. weather looks pretty good unless you don't like warm weather. some people don't like anything over 75. there's some fog out there,
7:27 am
right over the golden gate and angel island, also a little on the coast. so not as warm there. it's going to be little difficult to pinpoint some of these temperatures by the coast. just through the presence of the fog. but on land not a problem. 52 to 58. we'll be warming up quick. want to get out early, beat some of the heat here. would you do it next week. so. we're following breaking news, two huge crashes on the san mateo bridge have almost
7:28 am
brought traffic to a halt in both directions. and the gridlock could continue for hours. we'll have a live update coming up >> reporter: right now suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi is getting ready to head back to court. what he is hoping a judge will do and why it's looking like a long shot. >> also, messages of hate. why one bay area police department is now on alert.
7:29 am
7:30 am
7:31 am
we continue with our breaking news on the san mateo bridge. we have more news about this crash that started at 6:00 in the morning with a big rig rear- ending a pickup truck. and having fuel spilled all over the place. eastbound 92 also a crash in those labors, as apparently someone didn't notice there was a police car and a firetruck in that left lane. as a result of the first crash they ran into it. we're having a huge backup. i want to go to ktvu's alex savage, who is looking at stopped traffic here in foster city. alex. >> reporter: sal, a traffic snarled in both directions and if you look right here, this is the eastbound approach to the san mateo bridge. look at that, as far as the eye can see. traffic essentially at a standstill here. hardly moving at all. they're just -- cars are moving just every once in a while. let's take to you a live picture from chopper 2, up above the san mateo bridge. right in the middle of the span
7:32 am
is where the two accidents happened. the first one happened around 6:00 this morning, and that's when a costco big rig hit a pickup truck that was stalled on the westbound lanes of the san mateo bridge. there was a fuel spill of some kind, associated with that accident. and obviously crews are working to clean up that fuel spill. shortly thereafter, about 45 minutes later, in the eastbound direction, the opposite direction, someone in some type of vehicle, possibly rubber- necking, hit a chp cruiser and then that chp cruiser in turn slammed into the back of a firetruck. we do understand that in that accident there were people who were hurt. we're working to get more information on the extent of the injuries, who exactly was injured in the accident. but as we stand here right now, come back out to a live shot, you can see traffic at a virtual standstill here approaching the san mateo bridge in the eastbound direction, westbound direction not much better. a good idea to avoid this bridge altogether today and
7:33 am
find an alternate route. live in foster city, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. also happening right now, more breaking news, interstate 80 is closed in both directions. look at this! both directions on the yolo causeway near west sacramento. these are live pictures. everything at a standstill! we're getting word police are out there looking for a gunman in a stolen car. again, this is breaking news. you know everything we know right now. but you can see everything is stopped. this is interstate 80, shut down in both directions on the yolo causeway near west sacramento. so again, breaking news. police car is stopping everything, everything is blocked, and a search for a gunman in a stolen car is happening right now. people were getting out of their cars, standing out of their cars. sal, what is going on? >> this is really bad timing obviously because on fridays we have a lot of people who use
7:34 am
880, to get to the mountains, beautiful spring weekend in the mountains. people trying to get much there and this will put a kink in the plans. you can see the police officers are there, and they're looking for something on the yolo causeway, which is like a bridge. you have to get across it. so the alternate route is not really clear. i guess you could go around the very long way, but when you stop interstate 80 traffic on a friday, before this weekend, it's going to cause major traffic troubles for people coming out of the bay area, leaving sacramento, trying to come to the bay area. and everyone in dixon and davis, that whole thing some we'll keep you posted on this. this has major implications for a lot of people in the bay who like to get away for the weekend. >> so you said it's near sacramento. and just to clarify, if you're heading from the bay area, is it before sacramento or after? >> it is before sacramento. it's right before sacramento. would you say maybe 15 minutes away from the main part or 20 minutes away so it's not that
7:35 am
far. but a lot of people just kind of drive through there. they don't even know where this is. they're just on their way to tahoe and now this will be a big problem until they reopen this, and 80 doesn't take much to actually slow down. looks like that pickup truck may be involved, police activity continues. >> sal, any idea how far this backup is here? you have heard that much? >> we really don't know. the newschopper was looking at the backup awhile ago and it stretched for a couple miles in the eastbound direction. and westbound i'm not sure. when all lanes close on interstate 80, as you might imagine, it's really going to be -- every minute it's closed it will lead to a bigger and bigger backup. >> and you mentioned every minute is closed, and at this point with this bees a police investigation, we have no idea how long it will stay that way, right? >> yes. and what we don't know is what happened here was someone shot, was someone injured? obviously is if it's more serious they'll close the lanes for longer. and this is a causeway so people can't about on surface streets to get around it.
7:36 am
it's causing a big problem. >> all right, sal keeping us posted on this. the shutdown of 80 near sacramento, we'll have more details as they're available. suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi due back in court today. he probably won't get news he wants to hear. ktvu's claudine wong joins us live from san francisco with the very latest on that. claudine. >> reporter: dave, ross mirkarimi wants his job back, and he will fight for it back in front of the commission and the board of supervisors. but that battle could take time p keep if mind he is sudden suspended without pay now. that's what he wants the judge here to change, but it's looking like that will be a long shot. mirkarimi's legal argument is basically two parts. first he is arguing the mayor overstepped when he suspended him without pay last month. mirkarimi believes he should be reinstated. but he is also arguing if his suspension is upheld by the court, he should be paid while he fights that. today is going to be a formal
7:37 am
hearing on the arguments, but the judge relayed yesterday with a penaltiative ruling saying he wasn't going to step in items of the suspension, at least right now, and also said mirkarimi is not entitled to pay while suspended. so even though this is a tentative ruling, it is not looking good for the suspended sheriff. >> you have a guy with very little funds, with a lawyer or two against all these resources. it's a very, very tough fight for him. >> reporter: we should get a formal decision either late this morning or later today, and then it's on to the ethics commission. the commission will be making a decision on whether to recommend to the board of supervisors he should be ousted, nine of the 11 supervisors would have to agree. but this all comes as the district attorney is also speaking out in a radio interview, the d.a. said mirkarimi is acting like a typical criminal defendant, change is his story and making misleading statements. the d.a. publicly questioning whether mirkarimi should ever serve in
7:38 am
law enforcement again. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. police in alameda looking for vandals responsible for some disturbing graffiti. these messages of hate had the police department on alert. they're showing up on buildings across the city of alameda. the vandals have spray-painted the words cop-killer and dirty boy. police are following several leads but don't know who is respononsible and they're askin for the public's help. time is 7:38. starting this afternoon, there will be some help for pedestrians who try to get across a dangerous intersection near san francisco's state university. a new stoplight at the intersection of san juan avenue will be turned on. 20-year-old stacy crouse was hit and killed as she walked in a crosswalk there three years ago. the ceremony will activate the stoplight and also honor crouse's life. all of this begins at 12:30 this afternoon.
7:39 am
no such thing as friday light this morning. it's been incredibly busy. let's check in again with sal for some of the big problems. >> we do have a crew at the scene now. our crew is right there watching firefighters clean up this fuel spill in two right lanes. and tori mentioned earlier, they were going to have the bridge closed for another couple hours. this is the reason. you can see that pickup that was rear-ended by the big rig. a lot of fuel spilled. also the coast guard was notified the fuel would be leaking into the san francisco bay. and they're taking their time for environmental reasons, and also for not to make -- keep the roads slippery. they're cleaning up this fuel spill. let's go to a live picture from newschopper 2 to give us the overhead view. there's the same fuel spill, eastbound there was also a crash coming out eastbound as people were slowing to look at this. one car ran into a police cruiser and firetruck there. so only one lane is open
7:40 am
eastbound. someone just treated to me saying dumbarton bridge now is not that good. the approach is actually not great. so take that for what you will. it's not a great alternate but i think it's much better than the san mateo bridge. in fact, i would not use the san mateo bridge. you're leave us out now, just scratch that off your commute options for now. let's go to highway 237. some people may be use that to get across. and it's not all that bad. little slow traffic here at zanker road. northbound 280 slow traffic at 17. 85 has been looking pretty good for the most part. and we'll move the maps up to contra costa county. highway 4 we have a crash near summersville road and slow traffic in by point westbound. :40. let's go to steve. >> thank you very much happy friday! for most, for most, today will be sunny and warm. but not everybody.

nice tweet from san francisco saying it's sunny but there's a cool breeze. and there is some fog around. it's very, very shallow, mainly favoring the coast and that's about it. and a little bit coming almost under the golden gate out towards alcatraz some for many today, sunny, it will be mild, warm, warm to hot. but for others, it could be stuck in the 50s or 60s. some of that fog. if you see a calm wind and fairfield, calm at oakland and sfo, and even calm down to san jose, the only hint of a breeze is santa rosa southwest at 3. if sfo and fairfield are calm, there's no sea breeze going very far. so a few blocks inland from the coast goes from fog to sun. 50s on the temps and won't be long before we're in the 60s here, especially away from the coast. higher elevations i saw an observation near mount diablo around 2,000 feet. it was 66 degrees versus 50 at this time yesterday. 16-degree jump is huge. that's a sign high pressure is built in hence the fog much lower today and really restricted. temperatures will be warming up

8:01 am
good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. it is friday, april 20th. we're starting with developing news from the san mateo bridge. you've opinion hearing about it, two big crashes causing big rush-hour delays. one of them involves a chp squad car. the other crash involves a truck that's leaking fuel. ktvu's alex savage is live in foster south right now with a bird's-eye view of everything, and you talked to one of drivers involved in the crash. alex. >> reporter: we did a short time ago, dave. he was one of the drivers involved in this pair of crashes that happened in the middle of the span on the san mateo bridge. we are here next to the eastbound lanes and as you can see, beyond us here, traffic barely moving as you approach the high-rise. that's where that crash is just up the road. there's an accident that is in the eastbound direction, involving a chp cruiser and a
8:02 am
firetruck. obviously, it's going to be some time before they clear those lanes. the other accident as you take a live look from newschopper is in the westbound direction in the middle of the span as well. that accident happened this morning around 6 a.m. it involved a pickup truck that was stalled out in the middle of the lanes, and then a big rig came up from behind and slammed into that pickup truck. and a short time ago we had the opportunity to talk with the man who was inside that stalled pickup truck. they got out of the truck he tells us and describes what happened next. >> i noticed the diesel truck was moving a little too fast to avoid it and sure enough he just through in the back of it, crushed it into the guardrail, and -- came to a stop at a diagonal blocking all three lanes. >> are you okay? >> i wasn't in the truck. i was fine. >> reporter: we're told no one was hurt in the initial accident. that was the first of two accidents. shortly therefore about 45
8:03 am
minutes later we understand this may have been related to rubber-necking, but the lanes then in the eastbound direction, there was another accident, someone slammed into the back of a chp cruiser, that cruiser in turn hit the back of a firetruck, and in that seconds crash there were injuries we're still working to figure out the extent of those and who was hurt in the second accident. but at this point we know one lane only open in both directions on the san mateo bridge. traffic is a nightmare for commuters. a lot of frustrated drivers here this morning. a good idea to find an alternate route. we'll get back you with with any updates as we get them. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. i want to send it to sal for alternate routes. >> thank you very much. as you mentioned, the traffic on the alternate routes i think you should not use the san mateo bridge. if you're thinking they might clear this up any time soon, they're not. we have a picture now -- a view
8:04 am
of the maps here on westbound 92, but the red here as well on 880, driving down to the dumbarton bridge. then it's really terrible across the bay. so if you use the dumbarton bridge, you need extra time. now the bay bridge is getting more of a backup because of the san mateo. so this is all a system, and this is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. i would still say go alternate routes, don't go right now on the san mateo bridge. avoid that bridge for the next several hours. stay with us, we'll keep watching this for you. another traffic update just mitts ahead. back to the desk. happening right now in florida, just moments ago george zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with shooting unarmed teenager trayvon martin, testified briefly at his bail hearing. we have been looking live. these are live pictures, that's george zimmerman sitting down, in the dark suit and tie in the

teenager continues. charlotte molinar hialeah has not been seen in a week. allie rasmus joins is hive from spring lake park, with the latest on all the activity that's going on right now. >> reporter: people just started showing up about 20 minutes ago and right now highness there are about 30 volunteers on the search and rescue team. they've been checking in at the table. putting on some of their vests. and they had a lot of ground to cover to continue looking for this missing teen. this command center is in spring lake park in santa rosa. but searchers are focusing on ann an dell state park on the other side of it, at the foot of the hills. it's a very large area, about 2,000 acres. it's toes get lost. this is the area where 15-year- old charlotte molinari told her family she was going for a bike ride, on saturday morning. her friends, family and classes mates have not seen her since
8:08 am
then. investigators found the teen's journal and based on some of her entries it appears she may have been depressed before she set out to come to the park. this is the second full day investigators are going to look for her in this area. >> and that's why there's dog coming up today, to see if they can pick up some type of scent, start searching off trail, because the trails are heavily used. some more than others. but when you get off trail there's rugged areas. there's some canyons, there's some very thick shrubbery. >> and yesterday investigators searched part of the park by helicopter. but because the areas are so heavily forested, shrubbery, they weren't able to see much from the air. so today searchers will go off some of the trails, on foot. and that's what the search and rescue crews will be doing. charlotte molinari is 5-foot 9, 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. she was last seen on her mountain bike carrying a green backpack and wearing a dark blue knee length coat. and the accept for her continues this morning.

the scene, monitoring traffic, getting through. use alternate routes instead. let's go -- show you this picture here. if you think that you're going to get true the san mateo bridge, it's unclear why people are still driving on to the bridge westbound. maybe they haven't heard, maybe they're just not paying attention. but they're driving into a huge traffic jam. dumbarton bridge i better alternate although i just got a tweet from someone saying it's slower than usual. would you take 25 minutes to cross the bridge all day long, as opposed to what you're being put up with on the san mateo bridge. and also, 880 is slow and of course the bridge is slow. i want to move the maps to the south bay. we've in a rash of fender- benders on 101, a lot of them. northbound 101 approaching 880 northbound. 280 slow. but south bay compared is not bad. let's go to steve. >> thank you very much. happy friday! weather' definite dividing line between fog and no fog if
8:11 am
sometimes it's only a couple blocks away. so the fog is very shallow but very thick and it's mainly by the coast and working its way around the bay under the golden gate towards alcatraz. but for many today it will be sunny, warm you can visibility looks good. temperatures are warming up and when fairfield says calm, oakland says calm, and sfo says calm. that depends you everything you need to know. plus temperatures aloft, about 2,000 feet up. really warm. so everything is in place for inland temps to start warming up. there we go, fairfield at 64 degrees. san jose 62. we'll be in the mid-80s across the board. right by the water's edge. it could be symptom 60s and very, very low 70s. this is not a northeast wind. it's just high pressure parking itself on top every us. this system will break off, two pieces of it. one low will form and sunday will give us a south wind and in this pattern that will probably bring back the fog it. will still be nice unless you're by the coast on sunday. but next week probably have to start working harder again because it will cool down,
8:12 am
maybe dealing with some rain. but not today and tomorrow. patchy fog, some of that very thick. 80s for some. north wind would you go with 90s but i don't see that. but 60s closer to the coast or 70s around the bay. mid-70s and over the hills, mid to upper 80s. brentwood, antioch 87 degrees. 82 san jose. saratoga 83. 80 santa cruz. fog free now but half moon bay 67. you can find probably from 59 to 70 near half moon bay, depending on your locations. if you're hanging on at the ritz, it will be about 67. 65 at daly city and 72 in the city. redwood city around 82. it will be warmer on saturday. fog nice but a little cooler sunday. then cooling trend monday, tuesday. >> thank you, steve. it's 8:12. a road into yosemite will be open into the public starting tonight but another one will remain closed. it will open at 5 this evening but there will only be limited

roads from david to west sacramento, some of the surface roads. but they are very jammed. so i just got a tweet that people have heard about this, they're not on 80. they're on some of the alternates and they're jammed as well. so i really -- look a little these live pictures. you can see -- s.w.a.t. team guys in that pickup truck got out of the truck and apparently they have information the man they're looking for may be in these bushes. so this situation is not going away any time soon. >> and this is -- pretty dangerous for the swat teams because this suspect apparently did fire shots at officers when he was driving on the freeway. so certainly not afraid to open fire on anyone. you can see some of the dogs down there also so obviously they're proceeding with caution. but this is a very dramatic situation we're following. >> and obviously they have their support, so they have a reason why they're moving so specifically in this area, with guns pointed. >> and another thing is this suspect allegedly also fired shots at the business in west
8:25 am
sacramento when he was interrupted in the course of a burglary. army, the carjacked the vehicle ended up on the yolo causeway and the freeway as you know has been closed for going on two hours and that's causing a huge, huge traffic delay. >> in addition, sal, because you have such a fluid operation like this, it's going to take a long time for them to clear this area. so this may be an all-day thing as far as traffic disruptions in this area. >> right. and again, a lot of people from the bay area obviously trying to get away for the weekend. they use 80 to get up to tahoe or the sierra foothills. so we will let you know when that reopens but looks like it could be a situation that lasts for a while. >> we'll monitor this. newschopper 2 overhead, we'll take a quick break and come back and give you another update shortly. this is mornings on 2. we'll be right back. f

breaking news. we want to once again check in with sal for an update on the situation over 80, near sacramento. search for a gunman shut down the freeway in both directions. and sal, it looks like we have more s.w.a.t. team members walking through a field looking for a gunman. and they obviously have a specific reason to be look income that area. >> yes. you also medicine last time about the alternate route which i said was jammed. here's the specific requirement you can use highway 113, to i-
8:29 am
5, to sacramento, and thenning with to interstate 80. but a lot of people have been doing that. so even though it is an alternate, you can expect heavy traffic as everyone is trying to get off 80 now. remember, 80 is closed on the yolo causeway as heavily armed officers from the s.w.a.t. team are looking for a man who has suspected of not only shooting at officers but also shooting at people in a business in west sacramento earlier this morning. the man described as a white male, carjacked a pickup. about 250 pounds, acting erratically. he got out of the truck, wanted to jump off the causeway, realized it was a steep drop and ran back on to the causeway, then got off and ran into the marshy area here. pretty deep marsh, comes up to your knees here. so the police do have their work cut out for them. meanwhile, interstate 80 remains closed. and it's a pretty heavy police operation some this is an area
8:30 am
we advise you to stay away from. you want to put out that trip leaving the bay area to the sierra foothills for now. >> not only because of the -- roads being blocked off, shooting is possible, so you don't want to be anywhere near this area. and also, it's also interesting looking at the top left of your screen, how the police dogs -- being held back more it seems like while they tredge through this very heavy brush. gets up to about their hips it looks like. >> this is really dangerous work, dave. they don't really know what this man is capable of. they already know he fired at officers, so this is obviously being taken very seriously to the point where they don't want people even on the freeway nearby. >> no. and we heard reports -- we haven't seen it but looks like it would make sense, they're turning some people around on the freeway just because it's at a complete standstill. and we have no idea how long it will be that way.
8:31 am
could be all day. so if you have not left yet but want to go head to tahoe, you can take interstate 50 i believe or take 580 past livermore, just to avoid 80 south of sacramento, because it's shut down in both direction as they continue to search for the gunman. >> a little more system and, exactly where this area around i-80 is -- has been shut down. >> right. it's basically between davis and west sacramento, in yolo causeway. it is bridge-like structure that goes over the marshy area. most people don't notice it when they're driving across. it's just not a bridge you pay toll on, just a little causeway that connects davis between -- davis and west sacramento. that's where the man who carjacked the vehicle ended up, tried to run away from police officers after taking several shots at the officers, and he is in this area. so they've closed 80 in the area. just to follow up something you said, i think it's a good idea
8:32 am
if you're leaving the bay area to take the long way, go out 580 and join highway 5, and get to sacramento that way. then you can get back to 80. so that's a good idea, i'd say. >> we also have to be conscious of the fact as we look at live pictures, that because of the desperate nature someone who already fired shots, what we're looking at could turn into something else at any moment as they work through this heavy brush trying to find him. hope we don't see anything. but we don't know what may happen at any moment. so -- just want to be aware of that. >> and i'm not sure if newschopper 2 can pan off to show how close this is to the freeway, because the freeway is shut down in both directions, because there's fear that if there is any violence, any gun activity, that they don't want anyone on the the freeway to be impacted by it. and so there's a large gap in the freeway that's closed in both directions, a big lineup of traffic that's backed up, and again we had heard reports
8:33 am
some people were turning around on the freeway to get off because this point they're not going anywhere. so thanks to newschopper. this is looks like a good view of 80, where you can see it's a bit of a distance from where the swat teams are looking, walking through the marsh. and then it looks a little ways away, maybe 100 yards away is the freeway. so not too far but at least far enough that hopefully there will be no violence or no tragedies there. >> we'll keep you posted on all of this on i-80. and our other big story we've been following since 6 a.m., two big crashes on the san mateo bridge causing a major mess. alex savage is there. you've talked to one of drivers involved in the crash. >> reporter: we sure have, and a short time ago i also talked with the chp. they confirmed after this pair of chain reaction crashes, in
8:34 am
the middle of the san mateo bridge, they still have only one lane open in each direction, and take a look beyond me here and you can see the results. traffic is at a standstill. this is the eastbound direction as you move up on to the stand is where one of those accidents as many it's a crash involving a chp cruiser and a firetruck. but i talked with that chp officer a short time ago, and he told me there were no one seriously hurt in the accident. >> they were both unoccupied, and they were rear-ended by another vehicle. pushing the patrol car into the firetruck. i believe there was minor injuries on the crash for that driver. no emergency personnel were injured. >> and that chp officer believers the crash was triggered by a distracted driver, a person on the opposite side of the bridge who didn't see the chp cruiser and the firetruck that were stopped and they were dealing with another accident that happened in the opposite lanes. that original crash was about 6:00 this morning on the
8:35 am
westbound lanes. it involved a stalled out pickup that was rear-ended by a big rig that didn't see that pickup truck. we talked a short time ago with the driver of that pickup truck. he described how his truck stalled out, he got out of his truck and he describes to us what happened next. >> i noticed the diesel truck was moving a little too fast to avoid it, and sure enough he just flew in the become of it, crushed into the guardrail, and it came to a stop at a diagonal blocking all three lanes. >> were you okay? >> i wasn't in the truck. i was behind. >> and as a result of that original crash involving the big rig, there was some fuel that spilled out of that truck on to the lanes. the westbound lanes of the san mateo bridge. and we're also told the chp says a fish and game officials are also involved here, below the bridge, check to go make sure none of that fuel has spilled into the bay. they don't have reports that it has thus far but want to make sure none of that fuel makes
8:36 am
its way into the bay. according to chp, the lanes will not be cleared here on the san mateo bridge for at least another two to three hours. that means if your travels take you this way, you certainly want to find an alternate route around the san mateo bridge. sal, back to the traffic center. >> hello, alex. let me put the maps up here for you. alternate routes are jammed. slow speeds across the dumbarton bridge, although i still say alternates are better than what is going on on the bridge. we have a live picture now of the clean-up on the bridge here. it's on monument, if you can bring monument up. there it is. so you can see still very much a clean-up situation here on the san mateo bridge. now i want to bring you to the
8:37 am
toll plaza of the bay bridge. i know this is -- flying by the seat of our pants here. if you put up the toll plaza from emeryville. people showing up at the toll plaza and doing that instead. and so the bay bridge is affected by the crash. i pulled up one of my rough maps here of yolo county and dixon area, and one of -- lot of the people know this area well. you can take highway 505 up to highway 5, as an alternate. there's highway 5 as we mentioned you can also use highway 113 up to highway 5, and bypass the situation on 80, and the yolo causeway being closed for this police activity. but the boast thing to is avoid the area. this is a live picture on my left here of the situation near the yolo causeway with a suspected gunman who is -- police say is loose in the area. they've closed the freeway as a precaution looking for him
8:38 am
nearby. now time forth weather. let's go to steve. we'll get to steve in just a moment. first we want to tell you about suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi still bat get his job back. claudine wong joins us live to explain more. >> reporter: we have a tentative ruling so it looks like we at least know where the judge is leaning. this hearing however at the superior court will be the formal hearing where we'll look at the issue. but again, this is not a ruling if it goes the way of the tentative ruling that mirkarimi wants. the issue today is over mirkarimi's defendant status. he does not think he should be suspended and doesn't think he should be suspended without pay. so his lawyers went to the court to try to get him reinstated. or at least get him on a paid suspension. but this judge issued this tentative ruling that looks to deny mirkarimi on both discounts. leaving his status up to the san francisco ethics commission
8:39 am
at least for now. it is the ethics commission had will be making a recommendation to the board of supervisors about whether or not mirkarimi should keep his job. >> the final decision is really not a legal decision, it's a political decision combined with a legal one by 11 members of the board of supervisors. >> so this hearing this morning is the formal hearing. the judge will decide if the tentative ruling sticks. monday is the ethics commission hearing and then this will all go to the board of supervisors. i should mention that the tentative ruling does leave open the possibility that if the ethics commission makes a decision that mirkarimi doesn't like, he may be able to go back to the court and appeal it then. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 numbs. let's check back with sal, see what is going on with this too much going on right now. sal. >> we want it give you the rundown of what is going on around the bay area. first of all, obviously you know about the san mateo bridge. i want to show you that traffic is still pretty slow. we're going to start off with a
8:40 am
map here of the bridge area, and also of the alternates. san mateo bridge is not advised to use now because of couple crashes there. i say 880 is an alternate but very slow so it's the dumb where tonbridge but i would still use that. the bay bridge is also affected by this. i don't think should you get on that span. let's go the bay bridge toll plaza now. that traffic is backed up heavy than normal. if you take the bay bridge, prepare for more company. it's 8:40. let's go to steve. >> nice job, sal. >> thank you. >> yes, sir. just heard from raquel on a tweet, she lives in the mish but is over at the cow palace in line for the "x factor" and just tweeted me and said it's sunny there. so i like that. thank you very much. have some fog and it's very shallow. you can go a couple blocks. but inland it's going to be sunny and warm, warm, warm. some of that fog in the visible

state park next to us. the foot of the hills you see just over that smaller hill offer in the distance there. this map will show you just how large an area we're talking about. it's between two to five thousand acres. the trails are pretty well used with a lot of hikeers and joggers, but according to police if you go off trail it is fairly easy to get lost. this is the area where 15-year- old charlotte molinari toll her family she was going for a bike ride on saturday. her friends, family and classmates super not seen her since then. investigators found or journal and based on entries it appears she may have been depressed before she came to the park so that's one thing venters are worried about. the other thing is there's been no activity on her cell phone or any of her electronic accounts since monday morning. this is the second full day investigators are going to look for her in this area. >> it is a very big area. and if you don't know the park but don't have the map, you don't know the park and it's your first time up here, very easy to get lost. it's a wilderness park. while you're close to the city

with national attention. ktvu as pam cook is in the newsroom with the latest on the florida man charged with killing an african-american teenager. good morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. the big decision today in the case against george zimmerman was whether or not to set bail. george zimmerman charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin back in february. the bail set just about one hour ago at $150,000. his passport was taken away and he will wear some type of gps monitoring device. trayvon martin's parents were both in the courtroom this morning. we've not heard comments from them. george zimmerman's wife and parents testified over the phone because they say they feel threatened and were afraid to appear in court in person. when zimmerman took the stand this morning, he apologized for what happened the night trayvon was killed. >> i want to say i am sorry for the loss of your son. i did not know how old he was. i thought he was a little uner
8:50 am
than i am and didn't know if he was armed or not. >> legal experts say zimmerman most likely made bail because of his ties to the community and the fact he turned himself in voluntarily. he also never been convicted of a crime and his parents testified he is actually been involved in a mentor program for young african-american children. again we want to go over the conditions set this morning by a judge in court just about an hour ago. zimmerman's bail conditions include gps monitoring, he also must contact authorities every three days. he is barred from contacting the victim's family. he did try to organize a meeting with trayvon martin's parents. they declined. he also has no use, no -- not allowed any use of alcohol or drugs other than those described by a physician. his attorney and the state will have to work together to
8:51 am
determine if zimmerman will be allowed to reside away from florida. george zimmerman's defense attorney admits he wants george zil man to be allowed to leave at area. he admits it's unusual, but he does think he fears for his client's safety. he also says he will ask for some type of protection for george zimmerman but did not clarify what that would entail. but certainly the story continues to develop. in overnight nurse, an elderly woman is in the hospital after a fire inside her apartment. investigators say the fire started in a dryer just before 1:30 this morning on 40th street near hollis. a woman says her smoke alarm went off and she then found the flames. two neighbors in the complex then jumped into action. >> the neighbor came and they really was a big help too. they came with the extinguisher because i didn't have one in
8:52 am
side the apartment. and they brought theirs down here, two of them. and they came and extinguished it. >> an ambulance door her to the hospital for smoke inhalation. she is expected to be okay. time is:51. more of that major mess on the san mateo bridge. the two early morning crashes still causing big headaches for drivers. also, the police activity that shut down a major freeway near sacramento in both directions. happiness located?

8:55 am
it's 8:54. we're following developing news this morning's traffic nightmare on the san mateo bridge. alex savage joins us with new information on the traffic right now getting any better? >> reporter: things are not getting any better. i'm sorry to report. the chp just telling me a short time ago still only one lane open in each direction on the san mateo bridge. and that's because of a pair of crashes that happened one in each direction. the crash that happened up this part of the bridge, this is the eastbound lanes here of the san mateo bridge, and in the middle of the span there was an accident involving a chp cruiser and a firetruck. but a short time ago i did find out that both the fire truck and the cruiser were unoccupied. show you some video of what it looked like earlier today. no one was seriously injured in that accident. they believe a distracted driver slammed into the back of that cruiser and the firetruck, and a neighbor -- dealing with
8:56 am
another accident earlier on in the morning, about 6:00. the original crash was on the westbound lanes of the bridge. a stalled pickup truck rear- ended by a big rig. we talked with the driver of the pickup truck. he describes what happened amp he got out of his truck. >> shoved my truck into the guardrail and front tires snapped inward, he came to a rest at a diagonal blocking all three lanes. and he was fine. just hurt his ribs. >> and there was some fuel that spilled out of big rig fish and game are down below in the bay making sure none of that fuel spills into the bay. again, it could be according to the chp another two hours or so before all the traffic is back up and running and the lanes are open on the san mateo bridge. that means you want to follow an alternate route. >> good morning, don't use westbound 92. show what you is going to on,
8:57 am
the 880 slow and so is the dumbarton bridge. i want to move the maps up to sacramento, west sacramento. yolo causeway closed because of police activity here. so you can use alternate routes like highway 113 instead. these are live pictures of the original business that was involved in the shooting. and nearby the freeway is shut down. stay with ktvu. we have continuing coverage on both these things. bay bridge a little slower as you try to make your way across into san francisco because of what is happening on the san mateo bridge. busy morning here! now for the weekend weather, let's go to steve. >> thank you. on this friday warm for most, there's some fog dancing around by the coast and around the golden gate. but for everyone else it's sunny and warm. continue that on saturday. looks look the fog regroups sunday and a big cooling trend next week. but today and tomorrow warmest yet so far this season. >> thank you, steve. back to sacramento for an update on the situation on 80.
8:58 am
here are live pictures of once again from newschopper over the business where the initial shots were fired that prompted the suspected gunman to leave the scene and then get in a police chase and fire shots at police and he has -- suspected gun man is now wandering around near 80. that's prompted 80 to be shut down between davis and west sacramento in both direction. so we want to bring you these live pictures once again. >> all right. thank you for watching. that's our report for this morning. thank you for rusting ktvu. we'll see you the next time news breaks. bye-bye.
