complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> unbelievable. >> worst you have ever seen it. >> oh, my god, yeah. >> reaction from one of the thousands of bay area drivers stuck in a commute nightmare because of what happened on a major bridge. that is one of the top stories impacting traffic right now. good afternoon, i am tori campbell. the other big traffic problem though interstate 80 near sacramento is still shut down

this noontime as police search for a gunman. i-80 is closed in davis on the yellow causeway that runs between davis and sacramento and it has been shut down since around 7:30 this morning. police are looking for a man suspected of opening fire at a commercial trucking business and crashing a carjacked get away vehicle on the freeway. he was being pursued by police. they say he fired shots at the officers. then jumped out of the stolen truck and ran after crashing it into a freeway median. now, this all began around 6:00 a.m. when officers responded to reports of shots being fired at the trucking business in west sacramento. the suspect was reportedly trying to rob the business but was surprised by employees showing up for work. he is described as a white man in his 20s wearing a long trench coat. there is no word yet on when interstate 80 will re-open. right now police are checking

out another pickup truck stolen in the sacramento area, they say the suspect hit a man over the head and then took the truck. now these are live pictures right now from sacramento from kcra, our sister station there, there looks like a residential area with police cars there so we are not sure what the activity is but we will continue to follow it and as we get more we will bring it to you. there are alternatives though if you want to try to get around the closure on interstate 80 in yellow county. but they are likely crowded as well. in vacaville take interstate 505 north to i-5 then head south again to sacramento, in davis take highway 113 north to i-5 and in the east bay take

580 east to 205, connect with i- 5 in stockton and drive north to sacramento, one option is using backroads highway 4 to the antioch bridge, north to highway 12 and east to i-5. the other traffic nightmare involved the san mateo bridge, two accidents, one in each direction closed several lanes for hours. ktvu's alex savage joins us live to explain what happened and the situation there now. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori, there is relief for drivers this afternoon. as you can see behind me all the lanes across the san mateo bridge have re-opened, the back up was so bad this morning the chp toll told me a short time ago several cars ran out of gas sitting in traffic and they believe distracted driving caused this mess. the san mateo bridge turned into a parking lot this morning. the trouble started around 6:00 a.m. when this big rig plowed into the back of a stalled pickup truck on the westbound side. the driver of that pick up, robert craiger, told us he

hopped out right before the crash. >> he smashed it, shoved my truck into the guardrail and his -- looked like both his front tires snapped inwards, it punctured his fuel tank, he came to rest at a diagonal blocking all lanes and he was fine, just hurt his wrist. >> no one was hurt there but that accident triggered a second crash in the opposite lane, a minivan slammed into the back of a chp cruiser and fire truck that responded. they were both unoccupied, the chp says the minivan driver was rubbernecking distract by the jackknifed big rig on the other side. >> somebody not paying attention rear ends a patrol car, pushes it into the fire truck and now we have more accidents. >> two drivers were treated for minor injuries for most of the morning only one lane was getting by in each direction. the back up stretched to miles,

frustrating many people. >> is this going to make you late? >> really late. >> cleaning up involved mopping up 40 gallons of diesel fuel from the big rig, as many as 5 gallons flowed into the bay. the department of fish and game and the coast guard responded there but the coast guard told me the amount of fuel was too small to recover. the c chp says the drivers could be cited. >> that accident on the san mateo bridge had a ripple effect for other bay area bridges as drivers looked for alternatives to cross the bay. here is what it looked like at 10:30 this morning at the bay bridge. traffic backed up at the toll plaza. and here is what it looks like right now. and if this is a live shot from right now, yeah, this is live, you can still see some back up there though it looks like folks taking fast track lanes

are moving through smoothly. you can always go to ktvu.com for traffic updates and we will update today's stories on line and bring you an update on the situation on i-80 near sacramento, another one later in this newscast. authorities are searching several parks in santa rosa today for a teenager missing for nearly a week. there is a worry she may harm herself or by hurt by someone else. allie rasmus was in santa rosa all morning as the hunt got underway. >> reporter: volunteers strapped on their gear and got the search dogs ready. the members of the search and rescue team headed out on foot. they are looking for 15-year- old charlotte mullinari. she told her family she was going on a bike ride saturday morning. no one has seen her since. >> she was missing saturday morning it was a run yahweh voluntary missing, which we

have man many of those. >> by monday there was no activity on her accounts then they found her journal with one entry expressing suicidal thoughts. >> what really intensified it is the journal entry. >> searchers hiked through spring lake park and annon-dale state park, she looked those up. others combed through the cemetery halfway between the park and her home. this is the second day they are looking but today they are getting help for search dogs, better able to go off the main trail to pick up traces of the missing teen's scent. drivers and hikers who frequent the city and state parks were also asked to help. >> hopefully they find her alive and well and we will keep an eye out. >> we will keep an eye out for her ab pass the word along the trails. >> she is 5 9:00, 150 pounds with brown schorly hair and brown eyes, last seen on her

bike with a green back pack and dark coat. >> the search also continues for another 15-year-old girl, specially trained search teams will be in santa clara county tomorrow looking for any clues in the disappearance of sierra lamar, the morgan hill 15-year- old has been missing for 5 weeks, tomorrow search teams will focus on hills and rough terrain in morgan hill, san martin and gilroy, investigators have been searching local reservoirs and other bodies of water. a bay area high school student was killed yesterday in a roll over crash and police are looking into whether drugs played a roll in the accident. it happened about 5:00 yesterday on highway 101 near king city. the highway patrol says three young men were in the car and there are reports they were students at oakland skyline high school. one person died at the scene, two others were injured, authorities say a small amount of marijuana was found among the victim's belongings.

san francisco's suspended sheriff was back in court today making another attempt to reinstate -- to be reinstated to his post. david stevenson joins us live from outside the courthouse to let us know what has happened inside, david. >> reporter: tori the hearing wrapped up 45 minutes ago and as expected the court dealt a double blow to the sheriff. a superior court judge ruled he will not reinstate him and he is not entitled to pay during his suspension which came after he plead guilty to false imprisonment of his wife, instead he will have to undergo a hearing and follow the final decision by the board of supervisors about whether he should regain his job or lose it permanently. they will have testimony about a meeting in which he was offered a chance to explain about what happened to mayor ed lee. >> on the one as the mayor correctly says presented him the interest and opportunity would you like to hear and then

there was no response and no follow up and this is the second time, not just the first, but the second time, where that had occurred and the meeting ended maybe after 10 minutes. >> i think the judge got it absolutely right, that the place to decide this is before the ethics commission and the board of supervisors. they are the 1 whose are going to know best what conduct is required of an elected san francisco official and this is the first time that the sheriff is going to be required to answer under oath the charges that have been made against him. >> the ethics commission will meet monday to set procedures for the hearing. his attorney today argued in court that the commission is simply making up the process as they go along but the judge disagreed and said that commission should be the one who -- to naturally decide what the sheriff's fate will be. live in san francisco david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, david. crews are getting ready for

the three day closure of san francisco's doyle drive starting a week from today. the weekend shut down on the approach to the golden gate bridge will run from 8:00 next friday night to 5:00 a.m. the following monday. traffic is already restricted to one lane from 8:00 every night to noon the next day. workers plan to demolish doyle drive during the closure. cal trans this morning gave the media a tour of the upcoming work and we will bring you a complete work on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. >> i wanted to say i am sorry for the loss of your son. >> the man aexcus accused of killing a teenager and sparking racial tensions spoke in court today as one wonderful several developments. we are heating up, rosemary will be talking about that. and also today is 4-20, why that means marijuana is a on the minds of some protesters today.

about two dozen medical marijuana backers gathered outside the courthouse in oakland this morning protesting the recent federal raid on the university and said president obama has broke in his promise to leave medical marijuana

operations alone as long as they obey laws. >> on everything i have ever had anything to do with with overcomply less than the number, we pay our taxes regularly, we are good people you know, it is insane what they are doing. >> the protest is held in connection with 4-20 day, april 20th is a day associated with marijuana smoking, it is believed that 4-20 began in 1971 at san rafael where some students would meet every day after school at 4:20 to light up. bail was set today for george zimmerman, the man charged with shooting trayvon martin, bail was set at $150,000. if zimmerman can make bail he has been ordered to wear some type of gps monitoring device. he has already already surrendered his passport, his attorney is asking he be allowed to live out of state

because of threats to he and his family. he is charged with second- degree murder for the shooting death of trayvon martin. at this morning's bail hearing he made his first public comments and apologized directly to martin's parents. >> i wanted to say i am sorry for the loss of your son. i did not know how old he was. i thought he was a little bit younger than i am and i did not know if he was armed or not. >> after the hearing an attorney for martin's family said they were devastated and outraged that zimmerman was allowed to make that statement. on ktvu.com we posted a time line of events in the case, look for that coverage under the u.s. news tab. an elderly woman is in the hospital after a fire inside her emeryville apartments. investigators say the fire started in a drier just before 130 this morning on 40th street near hollis. a woman says her smoke alarm went off and she then saw the

flames. two neighbors in the complex jumped into action. an ambulance took her to the hospital for smoke inhalation. she is expected to be okay. today marks the second anniversary of the oil spill on the gulf of mexico. two years ago today an explosion ripped across the deep water horizon oil rig, this video shot the next day shows the fire that followed. 11 of the platform's 126 workers were killed. the blast led to a leak in the oil line from the seafloor and oil continued to spill out into the gulf for nearly four months. today is also the anniversary of one of the deadliest school shootings in u.s. history, 13 years ago today two students went on a shooting rampage at columbine high school in littleton, colorado. they killed 12 students and a teacher and injured 23 others before killing themselves. there is now a memorial not far from the school to remember the victims. columbine high school is closed

today to mark the tragedy. pakistani officials say there is little hope that any of the 127 people on board a downed passenger jet survived today's crash. the plane crashed into wheat fields near islamabad in the midst of a violent rain and windstorm. it was operated by a domestic carrier that only resumed operations last month after suspending its planes for more than 10 years due to financial difficulties. the flight was traveling from the country's largest city to the pakistani capitol. >> summer like weather in the forecast for your weekend. numbers outside our door at this hour 4 to 14 degrees above yesterday, san rafael blue skies low 70s already at this

noontime. we have a summer like pattern, 80s inland, 50s and 60s on that fog, point reyes, pacifica into half moon bay 50s and 60s, if you have the gray skies and fog you are cooler than the numbers, 70 degrees there, 69 sfo, 72 san jose, low 80 recess concord, 74 in napa at this time, mostly clear skies, air quality for today good to moderate and will remain that way for the weekend. tomorrow is the warmest day but it is building and strengthening. notice how that storm track pushed well to the north. finally we have a trough. that is going to cool us down by sunday more so on monday but if you don't care for the heat it is going to stick around then we will get relief. warmer, 70s around the bay, inland 80s and by tomorrow 90s for some of the hotter spots winds 5 to 15 miles per hour in the afternoon. and if you have a warm day in front of you that nice breeze

at the top of the hours about a manhunt. these are live pictures from a news chopper at kcra. their looks like possibly a residential area that looks like lined parking spaces and a lot of police activity so we are not sure what is going on but they again are searching, looking for a suspected gunman near where a stolen pick up truck has been found, again these are live pictures from overhead in sacramento, the truck was carjack by a man accused of shooting at police on enterstate 80 that closed a free sway closure that is now almost in its 5th hour. these are pictures from earlier of the freeway, again see just the lines of chp cruisers and some of the swat teams being carried in a pickup truck. police were pursuing him after he was caught trying to rob a west sacramento trucking company. again we will stay on this story and have more on our

the stocks up mostly today after focuses returned to better than expected first quarter earns in the u.s. and reduced worries over spain's debt, the dow up 68, nasdaq though down 4, s&p up two. after months of decline california's unemployment rate is back up, new figures out today show the state's jobless rates jumped back to 11% last month, the increase represents the first time since december that unemployment hit or exceeded 11%. the uptick is a contrast with the national unemployment rate which fell to 8.2%. despite the increase in california last month's
