. a quiet day in san francisco bay as sailors gather right now to remember five crew members killed in the boating race last week. and it is still april but sure feels like summer around the bay. how people are beating the heat. and new efforts in the search for sierra lamar, where volunteers look for ideas in the search for the missing girl. complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 action news at 6:00.

good evening, i'm ken wayne, heather holmes is off tonight. the bay area sailors are paying tribute to five crew members killed in a boating accident last week. we want to show you live pictures from san francisco bay. it is beautiful out there. boats on the water even though the memorial begins in about an hour, ktvu's eric rasmussen has more on the tribute tonight. >> reporter: ken and as you mentioned today, so many are out here on the water, it it is about to get busier. organizers are expecting at least 70 boats to be part of the memorial. and they will begin a procession soon behind me led by the fire boat and the u.s. coast guard. the focus of course is remembering the lives of the five sailors who were lost last week when the 38-foot sail boat, low speed chase was hit by waves and turned over off

the fair lawn islands, jordan from, alexis bush, and three others survived in the accident. we tried to reach out to all three of them but recently they were not available for any comment. low speed chase was among 50 boats taking part in the race when the tragedy happened. there were already memorials out here, and we would like to give and look from news chopper 2, and close by, the memorial -- tonight's memorial is expected to go until 8:00 including the playing of bagpipes as some of the boats dropped flowers and wreaths behind them. also at 7:35, there will be a moment of silence for one minute. of course we'll be here watching all of it from the water and air. we'll have it all for you tonight at 10:00. live, eric rasmussen ktvu channel 2 action news. and you can find a slide show of the victims of last

week's boating accident at ktvu.com, just click on the slide show tab. oakland police investigating a shooting that left a man dead right outside a house where he was trying to get help. police say that there were 10 shots fired at 78th avenue at about 2:00 this morning. they say the victim ran to a home on arthur street, yelling and banging on the door for help. people inside called 911, but the young man died on the scene. there have been no arrests. and a fatal motorcycle accident shutting down part of highway 101, the highway patrol says a 27 man from san bruno was going southbound from the octavia boulevard when his motorcycle hit the center divide at about 1:00. officers shut down the section of the freeway for about 45 minutes. the motorcyclist's name is not released until his next of kin are notified. on the other side of the bay in oakland, the highway patrol arrested a man who led them on the high speed chase.

the chp says that officers tried to pull over a car that swerved on interstate 680 in walnut creek. the chase went from 680 to highway 94, the driver crashed into a fire hydrant after taking the les grant exit, where he and three other passengers were taken into custody. and today, a day to put on shorts, flip flops, put on the sun block and go outside. ktvu's john sazaki was there where people were enjoying the nice, springtime heat. >> reporter: here in pleasant hill, 83 degrees, just six degrees off the high temperature today. and people are enjoying the water and are otherwise trying to -- stay cool. lunch alfresco was on the menu at jack's restaurant here today. with the high near 90, the shade was critical.

>> it is enjoyable, i have enjoyed it. >> reporter: people were lining up for ice cream or shaved ice. >> and it can be up to you know, a third -- of the the sales. >> reporter: these kids loved their treat. do you like it being this hot? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: why? >> because we get the shaved ice. off it is kind of like cold on such a hot day. >> reporter: little league was in full swing here in oakland. >> it is fantastic, a perfect day for baseball. >> reporter: the oakland high was about 82 degrees, which was ideal for this parent, especially with the stormy weather that hit the region just days ago. >> oh my goodness, thunder, lightning, pouring down rain, so it is really nice. >> reporter: one of the area's coolest spots still looked more like hawaii, baker beach in san francisco was the place to be for hundreds of people. >> its an incredible day. are you kidding? i mean look at this. we're just having fun with our

little man. >> reporter: these tourists just got engaged in the city, and know they picked a perfect time to do it. >> i didn't think it would be so initial. >> reporter: whether in the heat, it reminds people that summer has yet to arrive. live, pleasant hill, ktvu news. and in emoryville, you can see here the people enjoying the nice weather, 70 degrees here at this moment. ahead in 10 minutes, we'll learn about a cooldown coming down in the bay area forecast. and starting today it takes a few more digits to make a local phone call in san jose. people in the 408 area code are now asked to dial one and the area code plus the seven digit number to make a local call. it will be mandatory in october because south bay is over- laying the 669 area code in san jose, instead of splitting the

area codes. customers will be assigned it in november. and in santa clara, another search for missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar. ktvu has more from morgan hill with more on today's efforts. >> reporter: well, coyote creek here is just one of the areas they have been working today. and i want to show you in the tree here to give you a sense of the area they're searching, falcons, wild turkeys are just some of the critters we've seen out here, as the searchers work to find sierra lamar. >> good girl, come on, let's go, go check. >> reporter: she and her dog walk through coyote creek, trying to catch a scent. hoping to turn up new clues to help to find sierra lamar. >> we have had a lot of poison oak, ticks, they have seen

three snakes already. >> reporter: they joined a 100 search and rescue team members from around the bay. their mission? to hit hard to reach areas like this rock formation area, between morgan hill and gilroy. >> we focused on areas in the past here, but didn't focus on the flat lands. so if search and rescue gets confronted with rocks and hills, they are ready to repel and climb if they have to. >> reporter: over at the volunteer center, more than 80 first timers joined many more returning volunteers. >> and my parents and myself. so i think this is every parent's worst nightmare. >> fear of everybody's daughter. and that is just -- the testimony -- of how people are really feeling out there. and -- that really -- gives us hope. >> reporter: this weekend marks the beginning of week six in the search for sierra lamar, for her daughter, panic is starting to set in.

>> i can't believe it has been that much time, you know every day -- just gets harder. >> reporter: and sierra's family wanted to thank the folks, all the folks who helped to pass out some 4000 fliers, including at oak ridge mall in the gilroy area. also they wanted to thank people who put fliers on cars this weekend. live, ktvu. and more than 3rd than 13 years after she was killed, a funeral was held for chris vanderveen whose body was found earlier this year ♪ ♪ ♪ >> it was in november of 1998 that investigators say that serial killers wes shermantine and lauren herzog killed the 25- year-old woman from san joaquin county. today the family thanked friends and investigators for their support and work over the

years. chriscindi vanderheiden's body was found this past year. i need to really, really focus on -- my recovery from this -- both the assault, the abusive relationship -- and healing my heart and my -- my -- mind. >> the 41-year-old claims she was assaulted by an ex- boyfriend she met in rehab. she is in treatment for drugs. her husband, the state treasurer says his wife's decision is in the best interest of their family, including their eight-year-old son. and nancy pelosi honored today as she marks 25 years in congress. the san francisco gay men's chorus surprised the house

leader with song and festival in golden gate park. the house minority leader helped to establish the grove in 1996. today she thought about what it meant to those who lost the loved ones to the disease. >> the peace it gives them, the resolve it gives them to help in this crusade that is continuing, until there is a cure. >> a new section of the grove to be built this summer will be named after representative nancy pelosi. and during his weekly internet radio address today, president obama urged congress to extend a law that would stop interest rates on student loans from doubling. >> you see if congress doesn't act, on july one, interest rates on some student loans will double. nearly seven and a half million students will end up owing more on their loan payments. that would be a tremendous blow and could be stoppable. >> the president went on to say making it difficult for young people to afford college is like cutting our own future off

at the knees. and a key figure in the water gate scandal died today. chuck colson was aide to nixon at the time of the water gate scandal. after his release from prison, colson began a fellowship group for inmates which is now in more than 100 countries. he died from complications from brain surgery, he was 80 years old. and causing a huge traffic jam, dead tonight. how officials say this happened. and it is all about saving the environment for all living things, thousands of volunteers today participating in earth day work day. we'll show you what they're doing. and two bay area women's soccer teams come together for a cause, how cal and stanford are working to help a very special little girl. and the bay area receives a nice dose of summer heat this afternoon. and now a big cooldown is on

. the coroner's office has released the name of a carjacking suspect who was killed by sheriff's deputy last night. the suspect is identified as 38- year-old jimmy lee graves, authority say he locked himself inside a sacramento apartment complex last night where he shot at officers and set fire to the unit. sheriff's deputies shot graves who was on a second floor balcony so firefighters could enter the building and put out the spreading fire. and some oakland residents are stepping up citizen patrols in their neighborhoods at this hour. the volunteers for the bay area street safety patrol started to walk the streets an hour ago

along fruitvale avenue. it was the same area where a boy last year was shot and killed by his father's truck. the patrol is made up of off duty security guards. and helping to clean up their community today, ktvu's lorraine blanco shows us efforts in the area, where it is especially important. >> reporter: it is an earth day work day, from oakland firefighters clearing out low dry brush in the hiller highlands area, to look at the weeding and connecting with nature. >> it is a baby snail. >> reporter: oakland recruited about 4000 volunteers to spend their sunny saturday cleaning and greeting across the city. >> i figured because i lived so close it would be nice to help my neighborhood and community. >> reporter: because of budget cuts, a lot of this important work wouldn't get done without this volunteer force. they're removing nonnative plants. the mayor tells us the city's

cutting edge restoration program serves as a model for other cities. >> we are looking at 40% of the park maintenance people over the last three or four budget cycles. and if we didn't have days like this and the continuing weekend work, these parks wouldn't look as good as they did today. >> reporter: one big event out here is the rescue turtle. they're here to remind us what earth day is all about. out in the area of the creek, there are lots of animals, turtles, some of the last native trout. we have birds of prey that come in and eat. so ewith want to make sure -- we want to be sure the animals are taken care of. when you see the turnout, it looks like this city is on the right path. in oakland, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 action news. and at uc berkeley, some students are marking earth day with a raffle to donate a hybrid, the money raised will go towards a program that puts

disadvantaged teens on the college-bound track. the volunteers chose the volt as the grand prize because it was developed by one of the alumni, bob lutz. and tours over the bay area adult film studio. the group, morality in media is condemning the offer of the the discounted visits to the san francisco company, king. kink. boycott organizers say it exploits women. group-on called the tour of the building informational. speaking of information, we can look at the numbers but it boils down to pretty nice weather out there. let's talk about the weather. and we have blue skies, fog near the coastline, that is about it. big changes in store by tomorrow. a notable cooldown, anywhere from five-10, maybe even 15 degrees in some areas.

a live look at the beautiful bay, we still have fog coming back in the area. the marine layer will become a little bit more defined and sweep in and bring us gray skies later. right now, mostly clear skies around the bay, 17 miles per hour breeze, in san francisco, a light breeze in most cases, san francisco reporting 12, southeasterly and fairfield at five, and santa rosa reporting 10, the numbers still quite warm in some spots. san francisco reports 74, 76 in oakland, mid-80s in san jose, san jose warming up to about 90 this afternoon, a degree shy of tying a record. 79 in and around -- the park, palo alto, and 80 still in and around livermore, 88 concord, still warm there, 84 napa, 85, santa rosa, the numbers are anywhere from three to six degrees warmer than what we felt yesterday afternoon. so again today, expected to be the hottest day of the week. so far the season -- so far the year and it actually happened.

we're looking at satellite radar view here, the ridge of high pressure, easy to see. you see the ridge over the state, keeping the storm track to the north. but this is our weather changer right here, it is going to actually eventually bring us a possibility of rain, yes rain, meanwhile it will cool us down. by tomorrow, we're looking at a 10-15-degree drop in some spots, additional cooling expected on monday, monday, wednesday, thursday when we see a possibility of rain come in, we could be back below average this time of year, tonight, a nice summer night. by 7:00 or so low 60s along the coastline, low 80s in the inland areas. 9:00, low 60s for the coast and bay, low 70s inland, and widespread 60s by 11:00 or so. we wake up tomorrow, partly cloudy skies, fog returning to the area, widespread 50s in the forecast. and the afternoon highs what a change. 77 expected for santa rosa, 70 in san francisco. 73 in oakland, 70s for areas right around san jose.

79, expected in morgan hill, seasonal, kind of what we should be feeling in late april. the extended forecast there, notice the drop-off. a big one, by tuesday, wednesday, low 70s, 68 degrees, the afternoon high on thursday, and again, wednesday night, thursday, models want to bring up a little bit of rain. >> so enjoy the sun while we have it? >> yes. >> it has been very nice. thank you rose mary. you're welcome. and there could be a chance for a restaurant, the restaurant was forced to close yesterday over code violations. the san francisco chronicle says the owners will present their plans to the public health department on tuesday. if the plans are approved and fixes are made it is possible the restaurant could open again. and two college rivals came together for a soccer game in honor of a young girl fighting a rare cancer. the cal and stanford women's soccer team took the field in san ramon this afternoon. the proceeds after the game will go to brianna bohenick.
