. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 on ktvu channel. flowers in the water as sailors from around the bay area remember five colleagues lost at sea. good evening i'm ken wayne, heather holmes is off tonight. a moving memorial on the water for the five sailors lost near the farallone islands last week. eric rasmussen was among the hundreds who watched the tribute to those lost. >> reporter: ken, that ceremony ended about two hours ago here in belvedere cove. boats came from all over bay area to be part of the

out a suspected car arson around 7:30 tonight on san leandro. a shooting in oakland left a man dead. investigators say a police shot spotter picked up shots fired this morning of they say the victim ran to a home and banged on the door for help. people inside called 911, but the young man denied at the scene. police say the victim was not carrying identification, and there have been no arrests. also in oakland the highway patrol took four people into custody following a high-speed chase that started in walnut creek. the highway patrol says officers tried to stop this red sedan for erratic driving on interstate 680 last night.

the chase made from 680 interstate 980 at speeds up to 120 miles per hour. authorities say the driver crashed into a fire hydrant on west grand avenue where he and three passengers were taken into custody. a 27-year-old man from san bruno was killed this morning in san francisco with his motorcycle hit the center kid divide on southbound highway 101. officers shut down the freeway between the octavio boulevard and van ness exits. the motorcyclists a name is not being released until his family is notify. today was a day that had just about everyone talking about the weather. it was clear, sunny and very warm. ktvu's john saki shows us how some people enjoyed all of the sunshine. >> reporter: lunch al fresco was on the meno today, but the shade was critical. >> i'm enjoying every second of it. >> reporter: at nearby cold stone creamery,

bay. their mission to hit hard to reach areas like hillsides and rock formations between morgan hill and gilroy. >> we have conducted searches, but didn't focus on areas outside of flat lands. so if search-and-rescue member is confronted with rocks and hillside theorize ready to repel and do rock climbing if they have to. >> reporter: over at the volunteer center, more than 80 first-timers joined many more returning volunteers. >> i'm a parent myself. so i think this is everybody parent as worst nightmare. >> sierra is everybody's daughter and that is just the testimony of how people are really feeling out there. and that really gives us hope. >> reporter: this weekend marks the beginning of week 6 in the search for sierra lamar. >> i can't believe it's been that much time. everyday it gets -- it just gets harder. >> reporter: the family wanted to thank all

the folks who helped to pass out 4,000 fliers today, including at oakridge mall and gilrey outlets and wanted to thank bart, which put up 200 fliers their cars this week. investigators remain tight- lipped about the new leads they announced on monday. the only hint it came from lab results from the evidence that has already been collectedful they are hopeful it will lead to a suspect. sort 'after sierra lamar disappeared investigators pound found a bag, clothing and cell phone that belonged to her. another search is planned for tomorrow morning. in san joaquin county mourners paid their respects to a young woman who disappeared 14 years ago and whose remains were found this year we a map tran by a notorious serial killer. it was in november of 1998 that 25-year-old cindy vanderheiden

disappeared. wesley shermantine and herzog were convicted of killing her, but her remains were not discovered in until this year. vanderheiden's family says the discovery of her remains have helped them heal. >> thank you everybody that we know for their prayers and thoughts. >> shermantine is on death-row and loren herzog killed himself in january. authorities released no, ma'am of a carjacking suspect killed by sheriff's deputies last night. the sacramento county coroner office identify the suspect as 8-year-old jimmy lee graves. authorities say he barricaded himself last night where he shot at officers and set fire to the unit. sheriff's deputies shot graves, who was on i second floor balcony, so firefighters could enter the building and put out the fire there. >> an update on the story we

told you about last night a pga spokesperson confirmed that a 55-year-old man died after he tries to move downed power lines in san mateo. the man was driving down south norfolk street around 630 when pg&e says he spotted the downed line. he was electrocuted when he touched the lines. he was taken to stanford hospital where he was pronounced dead. the man's name has not been released. nadia lockyer is offering insight to her resignation. >> i don't want like the word "victim," but someone who didn't realize how to heal from what i went through the last year. >> in an exclusive interview, lockyer says it's time to focus

. a top ranking republican wants to know if the white house staff members had any involvement in the secret service prostitution scandal in colombia. in i letter to the secret service certainty grassley asked whether white house staffers and the white house office of advance in scheduling may be involved in the controversy. meanwhile leading democrats are defending how the president hammed the matter. >> he think he is doing enough. i think he acted decisively and he had stripped them of their security clearance. and he suspended them.

scandal in mexico. according to the new york times, wal-mart hushed up internal reports that $24 million in bribes were paid out by executives to quickly obtain permits to build stores in mexico. in a statement, wal-mart said, "it takes compliance with the law very seriously." wal-mart is growing rapidly in mexico and now that country's largest private employer with more than 200,000 employees. tomorrow is earth day, but plenty of people in the bay area already have a head start on efforts to clean-up their corner of the planet. lorraine blanco shows us why volunteers are so important in times of budget cuts. >> reporter: it's an earth day workday. from oakland firefighters, clearing out low-dry brush in the hill or highlands area to prevent wildfires to the little guys weeding and connecting with nature. >> it's a baby snail.

oakland recruited about 4,000 volunteers to spend their sunny saturday cleaning and greening at 96 locations across the area. >> i figured it would be nice to help my neighborhood and community. >> reporter: because of budget cuts a lot of this important work wouldn't get done without the volunteer force. they are moving non-native plants and cleaning creeks and building new paths. mayor jean quan says the cutting-edge restoration program serbs as a model for other cities. >> i have lost about 40% of our park maintenance people over the last three or four budget cycles and if we didn't have days like this, and the ongoing weekend work, these works would not look as good as they do today. >> reporter: one of the big attractions is these rescue turtles. they are here to remind us what earth day is all about. out in this creek. >> we have lots of animals, we have turtles and native trout and birds of prey, and we want to make sure our animals are well-taken care of. >> reporter: when you see today's turnout,
