members that died. good morning, everyone welcome to mornings on 2 it's sunday, april 22nd i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. here is rosemary with what we can expect today. >> yes, good morning to you. already beginning to feel the cool down. we have fog move into the coast. take a look at what is going on for the afternoon. a huge drop expected in some spots. 13-degrees or so in some areas. oakland we will see a ten degree drop. inland not as bad. with that said 70s and 80s still feeling pretty good out there. we'll take a look at your detailed forecast coming up. summer like weather in the spring. it's the hot topic in some inland eastbound cities this weekend. alex savidge is live this morning in walnut creek.

alex, probably no fog there. >> reporter: no, none that i can see. cool and comfortable out here in walnut creek. it will get a lot warmer today. looking for a high of 84 degrees later today. well above normal once again here in the inland areas. we'll show you the scene yesterday. expected to be ten degrees above normal later today as people try to deal with really hot temperatures. 90-degree temperatures inland. yesterday people looking for the snow cones to get relief. they also hit the fountains as well. a short time ago we talked to runners here in walnut creek that said we tried to do our running early. >> we tried to run yesterday but we couldn't bare the heat. fully think it start -- >> i think it started getting hotter yesterday around this time. so we just had to cut the run a little shorter than normal.

>> reporter: yesterday a lot of people heading out to the beaches in san francisco to get relief and dip their toes in the water. good idea if you have activities to do it in the morning. they are expecting a high of 84- degrees in walnut creek. high above normal. >> bicyclist died after collapsing in triple digit heat in southern california. the man was riding on a mountain bike trail in palm springs when he became dehydrated. the man died before he could make it to the hospital. police are continuing an investigation but do not expect foul play. the temperature reached 105 degrees in palm springs yesterday. a reminder you can check the weather conditions always at ktvu.com. you can also receive weather alerts sent straight to your phone by signing up for mobile ktvu.com. in overnight news one man is fighting for his life after an overnight shooting in san francisco bay view district.

it happened around midnight near the intersection overgall vermont avenue and third street. they found a young man lying in the street. no one else was hurt and it's still unclear what lead up to that shooting. police are still searching for suspects. hundreds of sailors took part in a moving memorial. last night more than 100 boats formed -- the coast guard said the five died in a traffic accident during a race eight days ago. grip think everybody is thinking it could have been me. it could so easily could have been us. >> many of the sailors say they are too upset to think on

camera. the yacht was hit by two large waves and capsized. the boat remains on the rocky shores. these pictures here are from last week. crews are waiting for the right weather conditions to attempt to recover that yacht. later this morning searchers will head back out to look for a missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. they focused on hilly and rough terrain areas. sheriffs deputies also went through coyote creek to look for clues. they believe she was kidnapped on her way to school on march 16th. >> i think it has been that much time every day it just gets -- it just gets harder. >> shortly after lamar disappeared investigators found a bag of clothing and cell phone that belonged to her. today volunteer search will begin in an hour.

authorities are looking into what they suspect is a case of arson in oakland. firefighters received a call of flames coming out of a ford mini van. the vehicle was fully involved when crews arrived. a witness says the fire started shortly after the driver parked it and walked off. firefighter on the scene says it appears suspicious but did not say how the fire may have started. tomorrow ross mirkarimi goes before the ethic commission. it's the first of the misconduct hearings that could lead to the -- mirkarimi says he has no intention of stepping down and continues to fight in court to try to get his job back. a santa clara county prosecutor has been fired. the san jose mercury news is reporting that she was fired

last week. she was placed on paid administrative leave following an investigation that began last fall. rogers is accused of using her position to influence a custody battle between her and her husband. right now crews are cleaning up after a water main break. it happened around 5:00 last night. bolinas avenue was tempore close -- temporarily closed for a period of time. not as warm as yesterday but it will still be warm especially depending on where you live. right? >> yes. yesterday a little hot for me. today it will feel just perfect. we have temperatures rolling down anywhere from 5-10-15 degrees depending on where you look. giving you a live look at the city. you can see the low clouds and

fog filtering in to parts of the coast as well as the bay. so we will find that if you are traveling this morning the golden gate bridge sucked in by fog in some spots so be careful out there. 59 degrees in concord. 60 in livermore. some of us waking up very mild. 62 san jose. 52 san francisco some of us are a few degrees cooler already this morning. so stepping outside your door you may notice 57 in redwood city. here is the cloud deck. we have an on shore breeze that will strengthen. the two combined will bring us that cool down. it looks like the north bay coast could remain with fog there. point rays down and around the golden gate. it looks like san francisco along the coast. pacifica will be mostly sunny. the rest of us are mostly sunny. tomorrow morning notice how far it intrude the area. we are looking at fog returning tomorrow morning with the low

clouds as we wake up. satellite radar there is the ridge of high pressure that has remained over the area. it will be squeezed out by the system. we are expecting a little bit of rain wednesday into thursday. for today low clouds returning to the area. on shore flow increasing and strengthening. by tomorrow temperatures will be cooler than what we have seen today. take a look at what we expect. the warmer spots low 90s yesterday. today we are looking at mid 80s where some of the hottest spots. upper 60s and low 70s. and then by thursday we may be below average for this time of year. 76 in santa rosa. 72 in berkeley today. 70 for san francisco. 83 concord. the farther you go inland the more you will be warming it up. still a nice looking day. 77 san jose.

good morning. a live look at the fog creep into the bay area. we are turning down the heat on your afternoon highs. happening now the polls will close in a few hours in the first round of the presidential election in france if. current president nicholas sarkozy is in a tight race with nine challengers. recent polls show support for the conservative president. it's now being called the biggest scandal in the history of the u.s. secret service. the prostitution scandal involving agents assigned to president obama's recent trip to columbia involves at least two dozen agents. so far six have lost their jobs. authorities are now checking to see if any of the prostitutes were under age.

meanwhile, house minority leader nancy pelosi returned to san francisco this weekend. she calls the scandal a national embarrassment >> some of them would tarnish the image is really disgusting. i really don't understand. but in any event i'm sure there will be a full investigation. >> congresswoman pelosi spoke at san francisco golden gate park yesterday. the minority leader was being honored for her many years in the front lines in the battle against aids. the man once known to some as the evil generous in the knick -- genius in the nixon scandal. he said he would quote walk over his grandmother unquote to get nixon elected for a second term. he spoke about his time in prison years later. >> it was the worst blow of my life to be indicted because i had been so proud as a marine

officer, proud to serve my country, and flag waving patriot and i wind up in the courtroom. it's united states of america verses charles coltson. >> he became a born again christian while in prison. he kept up prison ministry for 35 years after he was released. george zimmerman's family says they are having trouble coming up with his bail money but he is expected to be released this week. zimmerman's attorney visited him in jail yesterday and says his client will likely have the money to post pond sometime this week. >> he's doing okay. now of course like any of us now that he knows he can get out sooner he is focused on getting out. he is certainly relieved he is moving forward. >> zimmerman must be fitted with an electronic monitoring

device and his attorney must find him a safe place to live before he is released. her remains turned up earlier this year after a convicted serial killer provided a map. it was in november of 1998 that 25-year-old cindy disappeared. wesley shermantine and herzog were convicted of killing her but her remains were not discovered until this past february. >> thank you everybody for your help. family, friends, and community and everybody we know for their prayers and thoughts. >> shermantine is on death row at san quentin. frightened customers at a mcdonalds in river side counties say they thought the restaurant was actually going to blow up. take a look at these

photographs. cal fire says two propane tanks could not handle the desert heat yesterday. pressure caused them to blow up and leak on the bed of a truck. >> i thought it was a bomb or something. heaven for bid. but it was bad. the flames were shooting up. >> the truck driver suffered burns while two children with him managed to escape injury. the explosion caused damage to the outside of the mcdonalds and threw pieces of the propane tank right into a parked car. investigators say there is no sign of foul play in the death of a san diego state student. he was found dead inside a campus frat house early friday morning. the tragedy has shocked and saddened the san diego state campus. >> very sad day here. any time something like this happens it's tragic and very sadden by the situation. >> investigators say the student died inside the frat

house but he was not a member. the coroners office said it could take several days possibly weeks to determine how he died. annual party at ken state university in ohio turned into a riot. the schools college fest celebration got out of control when people started fighting and throwing beer bottles. police dressed up in riot gear used tear gas to clear tout a crude of 3,000 students. some of those students started throughing bottles at them. you could see as much as five initiatives dealing with marijuana. most aimed at making it legal. on saturday they took over the civic center park for the second straight day. supporters wore t-shirts to vote no on amendment 64 will which will be on the ballot this fall. it legalizes american with restrictions. it would treat american like alcohol. >> first it allows for adult use and possession of marijuana.

offs and landings yesterday when he experienced engine robs during his last approach. he survived the crash and had no injuries. and by chance a friend that just happened to be out boating came by and picked him up. authorities say it's up to the planes owner to have the home built aircraft removed from the lake. 12-year-old new england woman is due in court after being kicked off a u.s. airways plane. it happened yesterday on a flight taking off from maine. >> she got up out of her seat and refusing to turn her devices off and all that stuff. so the pilot taxied back to the gate. >> a police officer then boarded the plane and removed the woman. she was charged with disorderly conduct and released. organizers of the burning manifest value are challenging the government for placing them on -- the bureau of land management said the crowds at the festival exceeded the 50,000 limit. the goth warned for organizers are placed on probation two

years in a row, they could lose their permit. it's an event that attracts big crowds, colorful comments, and a lot of controversy. this year it's the men and women in blue that are stealing the spotlight. the police chief is allowing his off constitute officers to attend. >> all the employees that are here on their own time the only difference is we were allowed to do it in uniform. >> the off duty police officers received a warm welcome from nearly everyone attending the parade. however local antigay groups say the officers could spend a better way to spend their time. a maryland sailor is back home after a sew already trip around the americas. 30-year-old matt said he's the first person to sail across north and south america solo

as a result the afternoon highs will be quite a bit cooler. 76 at santa rosa for the afternoon tea. 73 in oakland. 70 san francisco. a lot of 70s right around the bay. mountain view 76. 77 san jose. 75 in fremont. inland east bay going to be warm once again. although not as hot as yesterday. low 90s concord, livermore, san jose. looking at 84 today for livermore. san francisco hit 79 yesterday. the warmest temp so far in 2012. take a look at the forecast here. offshore is the system that is actually helping to cool us back. the cooling trend will come the first couple of days and even rain. wednesday into thursday slides right across the bay area. a few scattered showers in the forecast. and looks like a ridge will rebuild in time for next weekend. here it is laid out for you. temperatures expect that to be cooler today. still mild even warm in many areas. for tomorrow low 70s in the forecast continuing to drop off. as we head into the weekend we

are looking or i should say this the second half of the business looking at rain. cleanup under way in western minnesota after severe weather swept through that area. thunderstorms produced numerous funnel clouds and a few small tornadoes on saturday. in the town of milan the storm was too much for a families barn knocking it over and ripping it from the ground. >> down stairs in this corner was our shop with all of our shop equipment. we had an old car in the barn. >> despite all that dang, however -- damage, however, nobody was hurt. public works crews will be applying an antiskid coating to the northbound lanes of the bridge starting tomorrow. there will be detours while the work is being done. crews are expected to be finished with the project on friday. that is when the giants return

home to take on the padres. the work was supposed to happen earlier this month but delayed because of rain. a group of business school students is marking earth day by raffling off a new chevy volt hybrid car. students were on campus selling the $50 tickets. the students are trying to raise money for a program that puts disadvantage teenagers on the path to college. the group chose the volt as the grand prize because it was involved in part by a hass school alum fist. what police and his family are saying. >> an unusual punishment for a dui offender. why the judge ordered him to stand on this corner. >> we can expect a warm day through the the bay -- throughout the bay area.

spots today. >> reporter: yeah. i believe it. started to warm up here a bit. it's expected to be another hot one here inland. if you will be outside probably a good idea to find some shade. walnut creek expected to get up in the mid 80s. that is a slight cool down from yesterday when they were close to 90-degrees. all around the bay area people enjoyed snow cones trying to stay cool and hung around fountains looking for some relief. temperatures a good ten degrees above average all across the board. a short time ago we spoke to a couple friends getting their daily walk done early. >> just do everything in the morning. we were commenting on that. you know. just walk in the morning. do your house work in the morning. feed your animals. >> i'm from england originally and i fade with the hot weather. i don't do well. however, having said that we can do our chores early mt. morning, get our walking done and then go into our air conditioned houses so why should we really complain?

was killed by sheriff deputies in sacramento. the suspect is identified as 38- year-old jimmy lee graves. they believe he was responsible for a crime spree across several counties. share shot graves after he barricaded himself inside an apartment building. shot at officers and set fire to the unit friday night. graves' uncle said graves liked guns and was once addicted to painkillers. oikos university will reopen tomorrow three weeks after a gunman killed seven people on campus. the san jose mercury news says some of the classes will be happened in the same building with the shooting happened. nursing students may be allowed to take campus at -- take classes at another campus in the east bay. we are learning more about the electrocution of a man in san mateo. the 55-year-old victim was

driving down south norfolk street where power lines fell near his vehicle. he was electrocuted when he tried to remove a power line that was down. several peninsula and south bay leaders will gatter to discuss a new 911 communication system. the new federal law creates the first nation-wide public safety communication network. there is also money to buy the next generation of 911 technology. the system will enable the deliver of text messages, pictures and video to 911 call centers across the country. southern california man is free after spending 27 years in prison for a murder he says he did not commit. frank oconell was convicted of shooting and killing on a man in 1987. on friday that conviction was overturned. he has proclaimed his innocence over the years.

it wasn't until 1999 when a nonprofit group got involved. >> after they got involved my hopes and dreams i could see coming in the future. i knew it wasn't going to be long. i didn't realize it would be 12 more years. >> last month a superior court judge that the right to the fair trial had been violated. prosecutors will decide whether or not to retry the case next month. santa cruz police are using a new computer program they say helps officers predict crime before it happens. the program generates ten hot spot maps each day letting officers know where a crime is likely to occur. it works by using complicated math equations called alga ritzisms. police say it seems to be working. >> people tend to burglarize the same area more than once.

>> santa cruz police say the program led to 13 arrests last year an the number of burglars dropped by 11%. other agencies plan to try out that system. in texas an unusual punishment for a drunk driver. is a judge ordered the repeat dui offender to stand at the corner of the crash site and wear a sign describing his sign. so yesterday 39-year-old michael hill a sign that read i killed aaron coy pennywell while driving drunk. >> do you want to say anything to the victims family? >> i did earlier. >> what did you say to them? >> i'm sorry for what happened. >> for killing one of my best friends i don't think it's enough. >> he will be spending the next four saturdays at that crash

site holding that same sign. it's a punishment family members of the victim demanded and the judge honored. he was also sentenced to one year in jail and served 90 days because of good behavior. today the city council will review rules regulating massage parlors. some people suspect a handful of those businesses are offering more than just a massage. neighbors have complained about late night hours, flashing neon signs and sexually explicit website reviews. they do not have official websites but that could change after tomorrow. bay area rivals cal and stanford united on the soccer field this weekend to help a ten-year-old girl that is battling a rare form of cancer. the college womens soccer teams played a charity game to raise money for briann. she was diagnosissed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer last fall and had to

have her leg amputated. that has not stopped her dream of becoming an elite athlete. >> when i met her i was so inspired by her zest for life. >> i think it's amazing that the whole community has come together and been so supportive. >> the event raised more than $8,000. thousands of bay area volunteers will be cleaning up their communities today to celebrate earth day. it is the 42nd annual earth day to raise awareness. some bay area volunteers got head start yesterday. the city is cutting edge restoration programs are a model for other cities. >> i've lost about 40% of our park maintenance people over the last three or four budget cycles. and if we didn't have days like this and the ongoing weekend work these parks would not look as good as they do today. >> oakland recruited about

4,000 volunteers to clean up and plant trees at 96 locations across the city. oakland is not the only place where they are recognizing earth day. there will be an earth day cleanup at drakes beach. and civic center plaza in san francisco. and hacienda elementary school starting at 10:00 this morning. and laura bush is celebrating mother nature this weekend. she will be back at fair park in dallas after kicking off earth day celebration there is yesterday. she urged folks to take care of the world around them. not quite summer officially yet but it feels like a typical bay area summer day. rosemary the fog at the golden gate just socked in right there. >> you are right. we have fog right there. yes, you will have to deal with that if you are crossing the golden gate. that fog is beginning to filter in. as a result we will begin to

cool down. our numbers will be falling quite a bit in some spots today. you can see that westerly breeze 12 miles an hour through san francisco at sfo. a southerly breeze san jose. calm conditions in areas around santa rosa. 52 santa rosa. 55 in napa. 50s and low 60s once again. that shade of yellow indicating upper 50s to low 60s. san jose 62. slightly warmer this morning in san jose than yesterday. slightly cooler around san francisco and oakland already beginning to feel the influence from the pacific take a look at the forecast here. we've got the fog returning to the area. it's up against the coastline. could remain that way for most of the day. seeing it little pockets of coastal fog moving in and around the bay it will pull back. we will have mostly sunny skies. this is a prelude of bigger changes to come. first the cooling trend and eventually rain. tomorrow morning we'll wake up

and notice the intrusion there. a little bit stronger as the day progresses. as we hit midweek we will notice the biggest changes. where is that rain coming from? right here. the rain will sink south. it will cross over southern california. we also have a second system that will drop out of the gulf of alaska. that will bring us a chance for scattered showers. to sum it up we have the low clouds returning to the area. notable drop in temperatures. i don't want to say it will be cool because it's not. it's going to be mild and warm in some areas. and then for the extended forecast showers in the forecast there. we could use it after yesterday's heat up we were dry. 72 in berkeley. 73 in oakland. 74 hayward. to the host 63 pacifica. it will be a cool day with partly to mostly cloudy skies. a huge, huge drop in areas like santa rosa. 75 expected fremont. still a warm day in livermore. 84 for you.

there is the extended forecast and notice our numbers continue to fall off. the downward trend. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday with thursday 67 degrees the afternoon high and the forecast there. and again that possibility of showers. i'll bring you that long range model show you when we expect the rain to arrive coming up. house minority leader nancy pelosi is marking 25 years in cop with a new honor in san francisco. it took place yesterday at the golden gate park. organizers say the congresswoman has worked tirelessly to support funding and research to find a cure for aids. a new section of the grove set to be built this summer will be named after the house minority leader. a u.s. airways flight landed safely in phoenix after a crack appeared on the planes windshield. aerial video shows the plane on the tarmac yesterday afternoon. that crack appeared during a flight from milwaukee and if

you look at the video you will notice that there is a blanket that is covering that window. it's not career what led to that crack american airlines is heading to court tomorrow as they plan to toss out labor contracts. they say they need to get rid of the contracts so they can emerge from bankruptcy. american is also proposing eliminating as many as 13,000 jobs. employees across the country are expected to protest tomorrows court hearing. a demonstration is planned at sfo. the hunger games has dominated the box office for most of the month. a new movie appears to have dethrowned the smash hit. >> the dark knight strikes again. >> think like a man brought in $12.2 million on friday. that puts the tyler perry movie on track to bring in around $33 million for the entire weekend. think like a man is already considered a hit. it costs $13 million to make. the lucky one starring zach

we will be above average. our numbers way below what we hit yesterday. 76 the forecasted high for today. that is a change of 13 degrees. ten for oakland. livermore will be warm again. 84 degrees. that will one of the warmer spots. we'll take a look around the area and show you what you can expect for today. back to you. in overnight news one man is fighting for his life after an overnight shooting in san francisco's bay view district. it happened around midnight near the intersection of galves avenue and third street. officers found a young man lying in the street. no one else was hurt and it's still unclear what lead up to that shooting. hundreds of sailors took part if a moving memorial in the waters of the san francisco bay. last night more than 100 boats formed a solemn flotilla. it was to pay attribute to five

sailors. the five died in a tragic accident during a race eight days ago. >> i think everybody is thinking it could have been me. it could have so easily been us. >> many of the sailors say they are still too upset to speak on camera. others told us this memorial was a fitting way for the entire sailing community to mourn and heal. the yacht was hilt by two large waves and capsized. these are pictures from last week and crews are still waiting for the right weather conditions to attempt a recovery of that yacht. right now searchers are heading back out to look for missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. sheriff deputies and search dogs went through coyote creek to find any clues. investigators believe 15-year- old lamar was kidnapped on her way to school. >> i believe it has been that

much time. every day it just gets -- it just gets harder. >> shortly after lamar disappeared investigators found a bag of clothing and a cell phone that belonged to her. tomorrow suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi goes before ethics commission. it's the first of the misconduct hearing that could lead to his removal of office. they will make a recommendation to the boardover supervisors. mirkarimi says he has no intention of stepping down and continues to fight in court to get his job back. authorities are look into what they suspect is a case of arson in oakland. firefighters received a coo call of flames coming out of a ford mini van. that vehicle as you can see there was fully involved when crews arrived. a witness says that fire started shortly after the driver parked it and walked off. a firefighters on the scene

says it does appear suspicious but did not say how the fire may have started. customers at a mcdonalds in river side county thought the restaurant was going to blow up. here's why. take a look at these pictures. cal fire says two propane tanks couldn't handle the desert heat yesterday. pressure built up to them. static electricity helped ignite that fire and explosion near the restaurant drive through. >> i thought it was a bomb or something. heaven for bid. but it was bad. yeah. the the blames were shooting up. >> the truck driver suffered the burns but the two children with him did manage to escape without injury. the explosion caused the outside of that mcdonalds and threw pieces of the propane tank into a parked car. there is no sign of foul play in the death of a college student. his body was found inside a campus fraternity house.

the tragedy shock and saddened the san diego state campus. >> very sad day here at sdsu. any time this happens it's very tragic. >> investigators say the student died inside the frat house but he was not a member. the coroners office says it could take several days possibly even weeks to determine how he passed away. a bicyclist died after collapsing in triple digit heat in southern california. police say the man was riding on a mountain bike trail when he got dehydrated. the man died before he could make it to the hospital. police are continuing to investigate but they don't suspect foul play. temperatures reached 105- degrees in palm springs yesterday. rosemary has been telling us it will be cooler in the bay area but we can still look to pleasant temperatures. people across the bay area are heading out to enjoy this picture perfect weather. ice cream shops have become the

in sacramento. he is identified as jimmy lee graves. they believe he was responsible for a crime spree across several counties. they shot graves after they barricaded himself inside an apartment building, shot at officers and set fire to the unit. greg's uncle said graves liked guns and once addicted to painkillers. others say he had ike logical issues and marriage problems. >> we are also learning more about an electrocution. the victim was driving down south norfolk street on friday night when power lines fell near his vehicle. he was electrocuted when he tried to remove a power line that was still live and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. investigators are reportedly checking to see if a balloon may have been tangled up on that line. in san joaquin county mourners pay attribute to a young woman that disappeared more than a decade ago. her remains turned up earlier

an american sailor is back home after a solo drip around the americas. he said he's the first person to sail across north and south america nonstop. he docked, ending his 10 month, 23,000-mile journey. he made the trip to raise money for people with disabilities. he does say, though, it's an effort that almost cost him his life. >> there were times that i was very, very close misses i had, icebergs coming out of the fog at the last second. i have no radar on this boat. then the storms. i was nearly killed by a giant iceberg. >> i need to get a haircut. >> he says he needs a haircut now that he's back on land. he's a self-taught sailor. >> the san jose sharks are licking their wounds this morning after another disappointing playoff run. >> and he scores!
