three weeks after a mass shooting at an oakland campus, classes are now back in session. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. today, classes have resumed at oikos university three weeks after that deadly shooting. ktvu's tara moriarty has been there all morning as students try to return to their normal studies but this is hardly a

normal day. tara? >> reporter: that's right. definitely an emotionally- charged day. students arrived for class at 9:00 a.m. right now they are getting ready for a concert. and for all of them, memories of that day still haunt them. lucas garcia was concerned about his students who, for first time in three weeks, since the deadly shooting headed back to class. >> i wanted to talk to them and make sure they are okay and -- and let them express how they feel and -- i'm -- i'm just gonna play it by ear. >> reporter: garcia let his students out the back door to escape one goh, a formal disgauntled student. >> we were scared. we wanted to come out together. >> reporter: counselors will be onhand to help students ease back into the student life today. the president asked the media to leave because the students

were too scared to come in. >> not today. smock. >> reporter: the nursing students did not come. >> they are too tree matised. >> so another university offered a place for the students there. >> it was intense moments for the police officers and all of the first responders. we just didn't know what we were gonna face. >> reporter: the sergeant still has scars when he cut his hand on glass trying to get the victims out. >> it's surreal that you see something like that happen. you talk about virginia tech and you are so far removed. but when it hits home like here, it's unbelievable. >> reporter: now, goh is facing seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. he's expected to enter a plea next monday. live from loeckd, tara mor -- oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. a fiery crash ended with a

driver being arrested for dui. we first brought you this at 4:30 a.m. on our morning news. the suv flipped over just north of the broadway exit and caught fire. it narrowly missed going down a 40-foot edge becamement. the drive -- embankment. the driver got out before it burst into flames. >> just freaked out. severe everybodied out this -- swerved out this way. >> the chp officers gave the diver a breathalyzer test and arrested him under suspicion of driving under the instance. a protest is underway at sfo. american airlines workers are not happy with the airlines' attempts to throw out their union -- their union contracts. alex savidge is live to let us know what the situation is. gooch, alex. >> ail -- good afternoon,

alex. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. this event is part of a coordinated series of demonstrations all over the country put on by the association of professional flight attendants. this happens the same day as american's pay company heads into bankruptcy in new york. they are trying to cut roughly $3.5 billion from its operating budget. and these flight attendants worry their jobs are on the line. >> this is a continuing erosion of the middle class, you know, our folks out here are, you know, sometimes living paycheck to to check -- paycheck to paycheck and we're here because of a top management group that has not been able to turn the airline around and now they are coming back to labor to give up even more. >> reporter: more than 17,000 american flight attendants are walking picket lines around the country.

this comes with talks of an american merger with u.s. airways. something flight attendants support. that means no furloughs and half as many jobs lost. i was e-mailed a statement from a spokesperson from american airlines. it says we must act with urgency to get the company back on track. that's the company's rae sponges -- response to the pickets taking place all over the country today, including right here. back to you. >> thank you, alex. the criminal trial began for john edwards. the former democratic party presidential candidate and vice presidential nominee is charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts related to campaign finance violations. prosecutors say edwards used more than $900,000 in contributetions to -- contributions to hide a

romantic affair during his came -- campaign. a little over an hour ago, jennifer hud sond took the stand in chicago to testify against william balfour and she burt -- she burst into tears. george zimmerman is now out on bail. he walked out of a jail in sanford, florida around midnight on $150,000 bond. he was taken to an undisclosed location for his safety. he was also fitted with a gps ankle monitor and must observe a 7:00 p.m. curfew. zimmerman is facing seackd- degree murder charges for the fatal february shooting of the 17-year-old martin.

martin's attorneys say trayvon's parents are not pleased by zimmerman's replease. re-- release. the president made a visit to the holocaust museum in washington, d.c. and stood at the eternal flame dedicated to the 6 million jews killed by the nazis. they also lit candles at the wall for those who died at the concentration camp. president obama vowed to never allow genocide happen again. >> the bigotry says they are less than me, less than my level. these are seeds of hate we cannot let take room in my heart. >> the president signed an

order that will give sangs to companies who mrs. use internet and cell phone -- who misuse internet and technologies for improper purposes. leon panetta said this morning that the definite department has suspended the security clearance of military members today. also, a senior official said another member of the military is now under investigation. that brings the number to 12. a dozen secret service agents are also being investigated. six have already lost their jobs over allegations of soliciting prostitutes at a colombia hotel. nato announced two of its service members are dead after a bomb attack in afghanistan. the attack happened yesterday in the eastern part of the country. nato is not saying what exactly what happened or release --

releasing the nationalities of the two service members killed. however, most are american in that area. the fbi, border patrol and u.s. marshals have now joined in the search for isabel mercedes. she was reported missing over the weekend. her parents say they put her to dead friday note. she was -- but she was not there the next day. they found a window screen knocked down in the bedroom. police have realth -- police are investigating this as a possible abduction. etan patz went missing in 1979. police say no obvious signs of human remains have been found in a basement being searched. dozens of other items had been found and are being examined.

the oakland police department is about to lay out a list of major reforms for the department, reforms have been a top priority for police chief howard jordan. he's expected to release the list at a press conference he's having right now at city hall. we want to go there live and listen in and that's mayor jean quan speaking at the moment. >> as the chief mentioned, we're about to get our quarterly report from our federal monitor who has said that he's going to particularly look at occupy and we're also about to get the report that we've commissioned to look at the events of last october. what's been happening over the last few months, is that with this chief, the police department is becoming as much of a learning organization as it can. it is trying to change its procedures. it's been modifying -- any of you following the demonstrations or the work in

the community, you can see that we're trying to change our relationship with the community. and that means on the block in the neighborhood we're doing a series of community meetings right now, meeting with neighbors and introducing the beat officers in the police department to neighbors on a neighborhood level and also looking at how we handle mass demonstrations. the city is really the center. we have constant student protests, labor protests, we have all sorts of very large organizations, street fairs and actions. and the chief has made a commitment as i think only somebody who came up the ranks can to try to change the culture to move very swiftly when it is clear that discipline -- who is at fault and if there are discipline actions necessary. but mostly to learn from our -- people across the country don't

said. you will get shot. >> reporter: that's when this driver sprung into action just before 10:00 on sunday night. a woman with a hoody tried to hold up the clerk. a good samaritan grabbed him and stopped it. >> he's an angel. very brive -- brave. i never have been in a situation like that. i thank god he did what he did. >> reporter: in this case, have but it's not somebody that is encouraged to do. >> the good samaritan acted because he fired hour physical life -- for his life. there's video of this and police hope that video will lead to an arrest.

lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. a group called occupy the farm has taken up a plot of land in albany. the protesters moved on to the tract yesterday. it's an area used for agricultural research. the protesters set up tents and planted crops. they object to selling the land for private development. the university says it does not have any plans to develop the gill tract and that the protesters are actually impeding research there. >> we feel this is such a unique plate. it's 5.8 acres in an urban area and to use it for anything but agricultural is wasted space. >> the police have come by and toll them they are protesting but have not made any attempts to remove them. while we're enjoying nice

weather, folks back east are dealing with a nor'easter. it snowed m parts of pennsylvania -- in parts of pennsylvania for up to 12 hours. parts of bhoerk state could see up to 12 inches of snow. in massachusetts, people are being warned of wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour off cape cod. well, we've gone from one extreme to the other last friday and into the weekend. it was sunny, warm, and hot, hot, hot. we've come right back into a cooling trend started by the -- that started by the coast yesterday. that will continue today well inland. this is a big fog bank. there's high and mid-level clouds above it. there's finally some breaks. there was drizzle, some of it had measurable amounts. this is all from this system that will give us a lot cloud cover late tuesday into wednesday but it's really

enhanced the -- the fog bank. today we're going 72. coast and bay cooled off. but santa rosa, 77, to 66. there are a lot of low clouds and fog. it's trying to push north and get a few breaks. westbound 24 at fairfield, they've had gusts to 30 miles an hour. there's a definite knit sea breeze in place. the gusts of pind are -- the gusts of wind are gusty. fg is within a couple of degrees from each other -- everyone is within a couple of degrees from each other. wrapping around this system offshore, you can see there is a lot of moisture coming in and some of that will start to move forward tomorrow by wednesday we could get some rain in here.

maybe even thursday as another system crops down. these are not big rain producers. it's a cooler pattern and it's a big difference from what we had last week. cooler, breezy, that's already in place. some sun, there's been some local drizzle. when you get the fog bank up to 3,000 feet, it's hard to regroup that. there will probably be an increase in that tonight. so 50s, 60s along the coast. in fact, the warmest temperatures will be well off to the east -- east as have come way down. could be occasionally some light rain and giving way to better conditions, it start to warm up again as we headed to -- as we heat to the weekend. >> all right. thank you. we're getting word of a muni accident. witnesses on the scene say a man in a wheelchair somehow

european debt continues to pile up. the government of holland collapsed today over budget cuts and french president nicholas car cozy lost the first one of the election to a socialist candidate. the la fayette city council is set to debate over a proposed ordinance to regulate massage parlors. neighbors say they suspect the businesses are engaging in prostitution. the owners deny the allegations. the rules would require all massages to be certified. they would also have to undergo criminal beak grownd checks. a vote is set for may 14th. scientists say for the first time, they've spotted an adult orca, white orca in the wild. they spotted the whale off the coast of russia and they've named him iceberg. experts have seen young white

orcas but -- but this is the first all white adult. they estimate he's 16 years old. they lost track but say they will start a new search next month to learn more about him. san francisco maim -- san francisco became the latest community to offer people to drop off their unused, prescription drugs. this was held at mom's pharmacy, one of 12 -- one of the 12 volunteers. police can also drop them off at any police station in san francisco. >> you can drop off your medication at any police d. it benefits the environment and keeps everyone safer. >> pharmacies that do not participate in the take-bag program must display a list of the drugstores that do. tonight at 5:00, new information is coming out about the search for remains in the central valley. one of the so-called speed

never in my lifetime did i think i could walk 60 miles in 3 days. if my mom can fight and beat breast cancer, i can walk 60 miles.
