the sheriff's department sent a helicopter to locate it but it was too dark to retrieve it safely. as we showed you live on mornings on 2, the helicopter returned around 8:30 this morning and finished the operation. there is no indication so far this might be one of the four missing sailors from the sailboat race accident off the farallons earlier this month in union city, classes are in session after a student was shot yesterday afternoon. ktvu's alex savage joins us live from the campus with the investigation. >> reporter: union city police focused on finding this shooter overnight. officers stopped and question several drivers in white work trucks matching the description of the getaway vehicle and now as you can see behind us, there are extra officers on hand behind logan high. one day after the student was shot off-campus, officials

totalled us grief counselors are available for students. the student is in serious but stable condition. they're looking for a possible gun man, a man with a beard, driving a white work truck with a rack who was wearing a construction vest. to help put students at ease, more officers are hitting the streets near the school. >> we have increased our visibility with the patrol officers in the neighborhood. i find that at least that gives some sense of security and comfort to the neighbors around the perimeter and we have additional units in place at areas where students generally congregate, so we're feeling pretty comfortable about our security setup. >> reporter: the gun fire broke out just after noon yesterday. the wounded student ran and collapsed in a school driveway. logan high and nearby elementary were both put on lockdown. officials tell me logan high is a closed campus and one parent wonders why the victim was not at school. >> i feel bad for the people,

you know, i don't know what the guy is doing over there, looking for something and the school is over here. >> reporter: no one from the district would talk with us on camera this morning but they did release a statement that says in part, logan is a safe campus. classes resumed at normal earlier today. union city police say they've been receiving quite a few tips in this investigation as they work to track down the shooter who opened fire on a student yesterday. live this afternoon in union city, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are investigating two overnight shootings, at least one is now a homicide. police found the first victim on macarhur boulevard around 3:00 this morning. officers believe he was shot about a block away, ran and collapsed in the street. while police were investigating that scene, they

were called to a shooting on 40th street. a man was found lying in the street and was taken to the hospital where he died. no arrests have been made in either shooting. we now know the name of the man who was shot and killed by fairfield police this week discussing a confrontation. 51-year-old robert mcmullen was shot while allegedly fighting with an officer monday night. it happened at mcmullen's home as police were following up on an investigation. mcmullen was suspected of following an elementary girl and taking pictures of her. the united states supreme court this morning heard oral arguments over arizona's controversial immigration law. protesters from both sides gathered outside the court. a federal judge struck down the law saying the state exceeded its authority by legislating in an area reserved to the federal government. the two sides have framed the

68,000 illiam immigrants, more than any other state and folks that fwaltered here this morning say they want it to stop. san francisco supervisor john of avalos and others held a vigil. the u.s. supreme court is hearing arguments in the case of arizona's controversial sb 1070. the law allows officers to demand immigration papers from anyone stopped or detained or arrested in the state and critics say it's a form of racial profiling. when her parents received deportation noise, she decided to speak out. >> my parents and i are not a threat to this country or its security. we and millions like us are the foundation and back bone of this country. >> reporter: these activists are calling on california to take a different path from arizona bypassing a new version of the trust act drafted by tom avano.

the pipe and fill the rest with concrete or tear it out all together. the pipeline has not been used since a natural gas explosion killed 38 people in 2010. we have an update on the whale that's entangled in a large fishing line. the gray whale has been spotted off the coast of monterey county. pacific marine rescue officials say the whale is still towing marker booust. the whale was first seen last week off the southern california coast but eluded rescuers who tried to free it from the line. another rescue attempt is being planned when the weather clears. there's been a new turn to the mad cow disease case here in california as the u.s. beef industry begins to feel the impact of the discovery. two major south korean retailers temporarily suspended sales of u.s. beef. the company said they stopped sales because of consumer concerns.

one dairy cow that died at a fresno county dairy tested positive for the disease but u.s. agriculture officials and california farmers say the food supply is safe and the system in place to monitor for the disease works. >> the consumers to be very aware that the milk supply is safe, this has no effect on the milk and the meat supply is safe. that cow does not make it into the food chain. >> u.s. and california officials are sharing the lab results with international experts who will review the information. a former bp engineer is accused of obstruction of justice in connection with that massive oil spill on the gulf of mexico. police arrested 50-year-old curt mix in texas yesterday. he is accused of deleting 300 text messages that allegedly indicated how much crude oil was actually spewing into the water. 11 rig workers were killed when

he's urging -- iowa. he's urging congress to freeze tuition increases. yesterday, the president spoke at the universities of north carolina and colorado seeking to solidify the youth vote for the november election. there were more revelations and bombshells today in court in the criminal trial of john edwards. edwards arrived in court in north carolina a few hours. his aide was told to hide edwards' mistress, quote, the most important job in the campaign. the defense is expected to cross-examine the aide this afternoon. he has pleaded not guilty. the senate could vote today on a plan to save the u.s. postal service as we know it. the bill would make it tougher to close thousands of post

offices and end mail delivery on saturdays. the postal service says it needs to do those things to become profitable again. it reported that $5.1 billion last year. the bill is expected to pass. the daily cow uc berkley run newspaper will remain in circulation. last night, a fee proposal was passed by the uc berkley council. the proposal asked students to pay $2 per semester for five years to keep the paper running. initially the idea was deemed valid by the ucb president. if you have to drive on highway 12, it may take you longer. the road could be closed for ten-minute intervals while the work is being done. repairs start at 9 a.m. and wrap up at 2 in the

we do have this, more cloud cover out there and spotty showers. tomorrow, some morning showers that will be just in time for the commute but tomorrow will be the coolest day of the week and then the weekend a complete reversal, clearing skies and temperatures do rebound nicely for both saturday and sunday. it is mild out there right now. you can see already for this 12:00 hour in the lower # #0s for mountain view and -- 70s for mountain view and san jose. today's system, there's a one area of low pressure approaching southern california, so the bay area on the northern fringes here, so as that storm heads to the south, we will see a few spotty showers and even the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm once again, the timing the best bet would be for late this afternoon and into the evening hours. tomorrow, here's a second storm moving in from the north and west. not a major deal, but still enough to produce the showers and cool us off. our forecast model at 5:00, not a lot to show you a few spotty showers out there.

financial markets barely budged after the federal reserve said late this morning it would stick with its plan to keep a key short term interest rate near ze but apple -- near zero but apple's report has boost ed the market. the dow is up 81 but the nasdaq is up significantly thanks to apple. the nasdaq is up over 2% right now. s&p 500 is up also 1%. apple stook still doing today -- stock still doing well today, up $9. that's after the couper tino company posted strong earnings yesterday. iphone sales topped $35 million which made up half the company's revenue by ipad sales were still not as strong as forecast

there are reports facebook may delay its initial public offering. the kpt had been aiming for an ipo sometime in may. the changes after facebook went on a buying spree that included the photo sharing start up in instagram. the initial stock sale could be put off until late june. george lukas' film company is saying thanks but no thank to marin county supervisors who still want the film company to build ith new studio there. earlier this month, lukas films pulled the plug on the project at the site of the former grady ranch after getting complaints from neighbors. last night, supervisors promised to clear any regulatory hurdles. san francisco sam well restaurant may be reopening after being shut down recently by the city. the 100-year-old china town
