management they did not return our calls about the lawsuit. >> here's a look at the time line of the accident. on the morning of november 7, 2007 in dense fog the ship hit the bridge spilling 53,000 gallons of fuel. the pilot was sentenced to 10 months in prison. in september 2008 the ship's owner fleet management limited pleaded guilty to criminal charges of obstruction, making false statements, and negligent discharge of oil. in september of last year, the owners agreed to pay $44.5 million in damages and penalties. san francisco district attorney announced today that he plans to file charges against a cyclist involved in a fatal collision with a pedestrian. it happened at the corner of

market and castro streets. he ran a red light and then hit 71-year-old su chi hu. he'll file vehicle lar manslaughter charges. he hasn't decided if it will be prosecuted as a misdemeanor or a felony. u.s. health officials stress there is no threat to human safety. tests on that infected animal were conducted and we're there tonight and tells us what scientists at the university are saying. >> reporter: well, the uc davis scientists we talked to not only agrees with health officials, but he said this particular strain of mad cow is not known to cause human illness. the downed cow was found in california on tuesday. samples were taken to the health and food safety lab at uc davis and on to the usda for

confirmation. >> it's not known to be transferred to humans. >> reporter: director of the food safety labara toy, he said it causes aggressive behavior. this is different. >> it's not in the milk. this animal never entered the food chain. >> reporter: he says this discovery shows that the system in place to test cattle before entering the food supply works, yet the finding at the central valley plant has already caused one major overseas buyer in south korea to suspend purchases of u.s. beef. >> i think it's probably a short-term reaction. as soon as the facts come out, people will understand the true facts of the case and that things will settle down and business will be back to normal. >> reporter: the doctor described this strain of mad cow disease as spontaneous as

opposed to the more commonly known strain which is highly infectious. he says neither strain passes from dairy cows to milk. in davis for ktvu channel 2 news. there's no word yet on whether a body retrieved might be one of the sailors swept overboard in the sailing race 11 days ago. tourists spotted the remains of a man in the water at a foot of a cliff last night. authorities couldn't safely remove the body until this morning. we were live this morning as the sheriff's helicopter removed the body this morning. a spokesperson says a postmortem exam could happen tomorrow or friday. rescue crews are looking for that dangerously entangled whale we told you about last week. the last time we saw it was live right here. you can see rescuers were trying to free the whale after it got

caught in a fishing net. that was in southern california. more recently that whale was spotted off the coast of monterrey county. we're live now near the golden gate bridge with the latest sighting of the animal. >> reporter: there's been no sighting of the whale yet today. as i can show you, the fog is beginning to move in. that will make sighting even more difficult. the whale nicknamed june, although its sex is not known, its track would put it off the peninsula. it's definitely in trouble. experts tell me the whale is in its northward migration to feeding grounds near alaska. as we first showed you last week, it was severely tangled in fishing gear when rescuers first came to its aid. >> it had about 150 feet of line it was trailing. >> reporter: witnesses say it's

a 40-foot long adult gray whale. through its mouth, over its back, and wrapped around left pectoral flipper. experts say this whale is very likely in pain, tired, and panicked. >> the gear can actually cut into its flesh and set up an infection that could be life threatening. >> reporter: the whale could also starve to death. we obtained exclusive access showing rescuers freeing a whale off hawaii. fishing gears tangles 3 million whale each year. most are not saved. it is against the law and dangerous for anyone but specially permitted people to approach a whale. >> it would be very tragic if the whale were to be further injured or if you were to be injured. >> reporter: fisherman and

boaters are urged to look out for the whale and call 877-sos-whale. i'll repeat that, 877-sos-whale. if they spot it, rescuers are standing by all along the coast. bernake said the economy is getting stronger and employment is rising. he said the fed expects to keep rates low during the next two years and he said the unemployment rate has fallen a full percentage point since august and is at 8.2% across the country. >> the committee expects the rate will decline gradually reflecting the moderate pace of economic growth. >> here in california, the unemployment rate rose to 11% last month, well above the national average. apple stock regained,

san francisco city crews had to remove a large tree this morning after it fell near battery street. it didn't hurt anyone, but it did block the street until workers hauled it away. we have another story where you might find yourself saying how could someone do something like that? we're in burkwood and we tell you what happened and how it could wreck summer vacation for a lot of kids. >> reporter: we're talking about somebody stealing from a program for low-income children. the police activities league puts on an annual summer kayaking program for a chance for kids to experience the water. come this summer, you might not hear the splashing of water or

the shrieks of joy from the program. the director says sometime between april 6 and 13th, the kayaks were stolen. >> i was heartbroken for the kids. we were just about to put out our summer brochure. >> reporter: there were 12 red, blue, and yellow cay yaks. they were stacked on an unsecured trailer. someone would have had to drive through a gate and all the way down a back road to get to them. if they don't turn up, the kids will likely miss out on what's become a favorite summer tradition. >> it's become part of who we are, what we present to the kids. it's be word of mouth. kids come and say when are you going to do the kayaking program. it's fun. >> reporter: she says that the kayaks were not insured and were on loan.

other groups used them too. unless somebody steps forward and helps them out, kids and parents may have one less option this summer. governor brown today ordered california agencies to take steps tombing all official buildings greener. larger than 10,000 square feet to achieve the green building council's silver certification. it also requires buildings to incorporate clean, on-site power generation such as solar or wind power. his new order will save energy, reduce water use, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. the defense in john edwards trial ripped into the star witness. andrew young is a former campaign aid for edwards. today he testified that he was told that hiding edwards' mistress was the most important job in the campaign. but on cross-examination, edwards' attorney accused young of being a hire who tried to use

edwards to get rich and further his career. he's accused of using almost a million to support and hide his mistress. time runs out for a piece of bay area history. set to demolish the 75-year-old doyle drive connector this weekend. traffic into and out of the city will be detoured. the closure is set to start at 8:00 p.m. friday night and last until 5:00 a.m. monday morning. pieces of the meteor have been found near the towns of paloma and lotus northeast of sacramento. the meteor hit the earth's atmosphere about 8:00 sunday morning and was seen and heard from the sacramento area all the way to las vegas. nasa is asking the public for

hours is this light shower activity moving into the san jose area. i have cloud cover here. i don't have reports oh of rain hitting the ground yet. i wouldn't be surprised if those areas aren't starting to trigger light showers. the atmosphere is very dry right now and that's why we haven't seen much in the way of showers. this lower layer of the atmosphere has been dry because it's been so warm. as we get the next system moving in and then this one tomorrow coming in will be a little cooler system. that's for the mid-morning time. we have two systems, here's this one from the south. here's the second system coming from the north. if they had phased up, if they had hooked up and come in here today all at once, we'd have a half inch of rain. there will still be sprinkles in

a judge has issued a temporary restraining order against the girlfriend of the late painter thomas kincaid. attorneys for his company requested the order claiming amy pinto walsh broke a confidentiality agreement. a hearing on the matter has been postponed until august. the 54-year-old kincaid died earlier this month. on capitol hill, republican and democrats squared off over what's traditionally been a bi-partisan issue. >> at age 18, i married early in life. it was an abusive marriage. he was a violent alcoholic. back then, you didn't talk about what happened behind closed doors. >> my question for congress was and has always been why did you not protect me or my family? >> today female lawmakers from

the search for a south bay teenager will soon get more national exposure. we're with the producers of america's most wanted today as they get ready to air the story. the popular tv crime show plans to profile the search for sierra in a few weeks. we spent the day in the morgan hill area and we are joined to tell you how the search is expanding. >> reporter: certain the search has gotten national coverage, but this tv crime show is geared to generating tips from viewers, help that searchers say they can definitely use. a search team of community volunteers struggled through

heavy brush and mud today in a wooded area joining more than 200 other volunteers searching for sierra. the 15-year-old disappeared march 16th on her way to school. investigators believe she was kidnapped. that theory brought america's most wanted to the home and the volunteer center for a show to be aired may 1 11th. >> it's important for everybody locally and at a national level to be aware that we are continuing the search, that we are hopeful, and we are not giving up. >> reporter: america's most wanted which airs on lifetime, says the show's mission is to track down fugitives. >> we don't know if she was taken out of this area. certainly someone may know someone who traveled to this area, someone who was driving through here, someone who may have talked about coming to this

area. >> reporter: the search coordinator says that national perspective is valuable given the scope of its own search. >> we stay within 20 miles on our searches. if she's not within the 20 miles, we need all the support we can to keep everybody focused and keep their eyes and ears open. >> reporter: still following leading generated. the next community volunteer search is scheduled for this saturday. live at the south bay bureau for ktvu channel 2 news. british investigators asked for help to try and solve the five-year-old cold case disappearance of a little girl. they released this age-progression photo and say they think she may still be arrive. she was almost 4 years old when she vanished in portugal. now investigators say they believe she was abducted and they say they have new information in the case. this photo shows what she would look hike now at age 9.

in yesterday's primary voting, mitt romney is closing in. he now has 844 delegates. that's just 300 shy of the 1144 to win the nomination. santorum has dropped out of the race. one day after his five-state victory, he's focusing on finances and plans to attend fund raising events. new federal campaign finance reports show that his campaign had about $10 million in the bank at the end of march. so far, he has spent almost $77 million in his race for the white house. president obama has spent $90 million so far on his bid for election. we have new information about what cocaine does to the brain. plus, the plea president obama made today before a group of college students. and the bay area city that's

city council delayed a decision on what to do with that ruptured pipeline from the deadly 2010 explosion. the council postponed making a

decision. one calls for leaving the pipe in the ground and filling it up with cement. the other is to remove part of the pipe and fill the rest with concrete. the third plan is to tear out all of the 8200 feet of the pipeline. president obama wrapped up with a passionate plea. he renewed his call for congress to lower interest rates on federal student loans. yesterday, senate democrats introduced a bill. >> when a big chunk of every paycheck goes toward loan debt, that's not just tough on you and middle class families, that's not good for our economy. >> i are publicans question the way the bill will be funded. democrats have proposed boosting payroll taxes. south bay officials are considering tightening restrictions on those payday lending businesses. the planning commission is set to consider a proposal to ban

pavement's wet in san jose. in fremont, you're soon to have wet pavement. as we go into the next couple of hours, those scattered showers will work their way north. neither of these systems are a big deal. they'll be nuisance showers at best. this is the afternoon commute. it doesn't take much to slow things down. look at the highs from today. when you hear the humidity, you add 69 degrees, it does feel sticky. we don't really get humid weather like they have in the south. that's what we have for today. this moisture is coming in from the south. it's dropping a lot of shower

activity. weather system one very weak for us. weather system two, kind of weak for us as well. one's warm, one's cooler. this guy slides through on thursday and as we get into that day, it will cool off more. so the computer model, tonight at 5:00 brings the rain up from the south. tonight at 8:00, some light showers. you see the models picking up the next system to the north. so tomorrow morning, system number one is basically gone. light, scattered showers, the morning commute could be wet. none of this is a big deal. the sprinkles occurring now, they'll slow you down as you drive around.

over a pair of skeletons found on a cliff in san diego 36 years ago. they're believed to be 10,000 years old. the university of california, san diego wants to hand those skeletons over to the indian tribe for a ceremonial burial. three professors have sued saying there's no proof the bones are native american and are a valuable research tool. the tribe has counter sued saying federal laws require they hand them over.
