area that will be closed. the section of doyle drive in red closes friday at 8:00 until monday at 5:00 a.m. that means no access to the golden gate bridge from lombard, or marina boulevard. instead, traffic will need to access the bridge from highway 1 in the avenues. at ktvu.com, we've posted more details about how to get around the closure. just look for the doyle drive, right on the front page. the rain returned to the bay area today, just as our ktvu meteorologist said it would. these are pictures of the rain falling in mountain view this afternoon. it was enough to make drivers use their wind shield wipers and a puddle or two. >> outside right now, we've got scattered showers. rain moved in from the south. started in san jose, working its way north. right now, most of the shower activity has moved off to the north and the east. you can see ability yoke right now getting moderate rainfall.

most of the rain tonight was around concord. they got about .2 of an inch of rain. antioch is under moderate rainfall. we could see wet for the commute, and even for the afternoon commute. when i come back, we'll check into that, and look at the five- day forecast as well. authorities in the bay area are asking for the public's help tonight to try to catch a man who's stolen thousands of dollars with a promise of gold that's too good to be true. eric rasmussen is live. >> reporter: a man took an elderly woman for $7,000 in this parking lot. he said he needed money to care for a sick relative, and sold her a goad bar that turned out to be fake. clean cut, and dressed in hospital scrubs, the alameda county sheriff says this is a

unreported, because the victims might simply be too embarrassed to admit they were tricked. ktvu, channel 2 news. police in oakland arrested a man accused of two stabbings this afternoon. the violence began at a rec center on east 50th on san leandro street just afternoon. an elderly man was stabbed with a knife about three miles away. the victim is expected to survive. police say the man they arrested is a suspect in both incidents. is she, or isn't she? that's the question for east bay assemblywoman hiashi. her assembly post ends next january due to term limits. she is on probation after being arrested last year for shoplifting and pleading no contest to charges of grand

theft. former house speaker newt gingrich says he's acknowledging the reality that he's not going to be the republican nominee for president. gingrich spent time with supporters in north carolina today. he is expected to formally withdrawal from the race sometime next week, and plans are in the works now for him to endorse mitt romney. gingrich says he plans to actively campaign for the defeat of president obama. president obama is expected to formally launch his reelection campaign next week. today the president was at the university of iowa. the president called on college students to help him push congress to stop federal interest rates on student loans from doubling this summer. >> congress needs to act right now to prevent interest rates on federal student loans from shooting up, and shaking you down. that's where you come in.

>> reporter: julie, nasa scientists say what happened last weekend is incredibly rare. tonight, they showed us pieces of the meteorite that caused such a big stir sunday morning. these are pieces of meteorite believed to be millions of years old, found near sutter's mill. >> this event was big, and produced a meteor that was very exciting and unusual. >> reporter: these are the only known pictures of the meteorite. what makes it so unusual is that it survived the entry into earth's atmosphere, without burning the organic materials inside. materials not found on earth. >> this material still has the good stuff in it. the amino acids, the sugars. all of those compounds that could have helped life on a planet. >> reporter: the debris hitting

2 news. a postmortem examination of a body retrieved should happen tomorrow or friday. authorities said they couldn't safely remove it until daylight. and we were live during mornings on 2, as a sheriff's helicopter lifted the body out about 8:30 this morning. the coroner's department says it has not identified the man, or cause of death, but a sheriff's official told us, he is an older man. the san francisco district attorney office says it's not going to file any charges again the owner, or crew of that sail boat. five of the eight people died when their boat was hit by very large waves. police called it a quote, tragic accident, and prosecutors agreed with that conclusion. investigating two recent attacks as hate rhymes.

in each case, the attackers yelled homophobic slurs. the first incident happened on march 29 on the 400 block of castro. the second took place april 7 on market and goff streets. they believe the same three men are responsible for both attacks. police say if you recognize the men in the sketches they'd like to hear from you. ktvu's robert honda caught up with the crew of a syndicated television show today, and explains why their involvement is very welcome. >> reporter: a search team of community volunteers struggled through heavy brush and mud today in a wooded area near gilroy, joining more than 200 other volunteers searching for sierra lamar. the 16-year-old disappeared march 16 on her way to school. investigators believe she was kidnapped. that brought the crime tv show, america's most wanted to the

other searches. the next community volunteer search is scheduled for next saturday. arizona's controversial immigration law had its day in court today. in washington, d.c., a heated debate over the immigration law took place outside of the supreme court. inside, the justices debated the question of whether arizona overstepped its authority when law makes passed the measure. it appeared to lean toward upholding part of the law. other justices voiced concern that those here legally may be targeted by law enforcement. afterwards, both sides expressed confidence. >> i'm thinking we will succeed, and i'm looking forward to june. >> it became clear that the justices are concerned about a system of mass incarceration that's going to catch u.s. citizens and immigrates who are here lawfully in the united states. >> justice alaina kagan dismissed herself from the case, because she worked on it

video tonight of a shooting in east oakland. ktvu has obtained security camera video of the incident. it happened about 7:00 tonight, a man wearing a black hoody is seen walking up to a car at the intersection of sunnymary and seminar. he fires at least seven shots and then runs away. the driver of the tan sedan was shot in the leg. police say his injuries are not

life-threatening. investigators are hoping that security video will help them identify the shooter. it's tough to imagine someone stealing from needy children, but that's exactly what the police activities league in berkely says happened when someone made off with a dozen kayaks. a favorite summer program is now in serious jeopardy. >> reporter: come this summer, you may not hear the splashing of water or the joy. >> it would really be a shame. >> reporter: sometime between april 6 and 13, the kayaks were stolen. >> i was heartbroken for the kids. we love that program. we were just about to put out our summer brochure. >> reporter: there were 12 red, blue, and yellow kayaks stacked on an unsecured trailer in the parking lot of the berkely water ski park. someone would have had to drive through a gate and all the way down a back road to get to them. if they don't turn up, the kids

screeners allegedly took payment of up to $2,400 to allow suitcases filled with drugs to pass through an x-ray machine at l.a.x. police in concord say a southern california lawmaker was legally drunk when he stopped in concord last month and was arrested. state assemblyman, roger hernandez had a blood alcohol level of .08. the district attorney's office will decide whether he will be charged. he called the test results quote, a huge wakeup call. a superior court judge ruled that the state controller cannot unilaterally block the pay of legislators. under prop 25, pay can be held if they fail to submit a balanced budget on time. last june, john chung took action.

but the judge ruled he overstepped his authority. using his own interpretation of the law. a military judge in maryland refused to throw out a case today against army private bradley manning. the soldier is accused of giving thousands of military secrets to wikileaks. yesterday, his attorneys asked that all 22 charges be dismissed. the judge will decide tomorrow if certain charges against manning will be dismissed. there is a new twist tonight in the case of george zimmerman. he's the man charged with killing florida teenager trayvon martin. zimmerman's attorney says a website created to raise money for his defense has been shut down. the attorney says this was done at his client's request. zimmerman was released on bail last weekend. it's not clear how zimmerman will pay for his defense. new at 10:00, the specter of war is rising in a part of the african continent that has endured decades of fighting.

a very lucky dog, nicknamed freeway got to meet the mother and son today who helped save his life. this is a remarkable story. angela porter, and her 13-year- old son river spotted freeway last thursday, dangling on a rope from the side of a pickup truck on interstate 780 near vallejo. they tried to catch the truck driver's attention, and followed as the truck driver took an offramp. >> he flipped and smacked against the side of the freeway. the guy just kept going.

>> terrible. heartbreaking, you know. see a dog almost die. >> the mother and son got the dog, who has now been named freeway to a veterinarian who had to amputate the dog's right rear leg. other than that, freeway is just fine. freeway will head to the humane society friday to find a new home. they found guns and pipe bombs in his home. he is expected to spend about two and a half years behind bars after reaching a plea deal with santa clara county prosecutors. police were serving an arrest warrant when they discovered weapons and explosives on his home on north 6th street. the neighborhood was evacuated as a precaution. it was illegal for sedlock to own firearms since he had a prior conviction. strong winds in spain forced one plane back up into the air. the pilot had to abort the

landing. the winds were clocked at more than 60 miles per hour. others made it to the ground, but not without being violently pushed around. italy's mount etna has erupted again. this is the seventh eruption so far this year, these spectacular events are drawing hundreds of tourists. in the past 24 hours two people had to be rescued. in england, the famous clipper ship, the cutty sark is reopening to the public. it has undergone an $80 million restoration. the ship was once one of the fastest clipper ships in the world. in 1885, the cutty sark sailed from sydney to london in 73 days, which was a record back then. offering a lifeline to the nearly bankrupt u.s. postal

rescuers are hoping for another sighting of a 40-foot gray whale that's been moving up and down the coast tangled in fishing line. crews managed to remove some of the fishing gear, but then lost track of the whale. spotted again yesterday off the monterey coast. >> it could be life- threatening. >> so this video shows rescuers approaching a whale off of hawaii, tangled in lines. experts say most of the whales and dolphins that get wrapped up in fishing gear each year do not survive. los gatos means the cats in

spanish. but tonight, the debate is all about dogs. telling us about the off leash proposal that has residents there so concerned. >> reporter: behind me is live oak park, one of three parks being considered as places where dogs can be allowed to roam free at specific times of the day. a fenced in county dog park in campbell allows dogs to be unleashed. many dog owners come here because there is no such park in their city, and it's against the law to run unleashed dogs. sara brings her golden retriever ellie here regularly. >> the great socialization. she gets to learn how to interact with other dogs. and good exercise for her. >> reporter: at a community meeting tonight at a school in los gatos, a mother read a statement from her young daughter. >> my name is kate ritter.

a final action sometime in june. lloyd lacuesta, ktvu, channel 2 news. two new studies out of uc davis suggest there is a possible link between exposure to a once commonly used class of chemicals and autism. in two studies, in baby rats, researchers found exposures to chemicals known as pcb's, called a chemical chain of events in rat's brains, similar to that found in some forms of autism. pcb's were banned in 1979, but still linger in the environment. they say it could increase the likelihood for some children. another new survey suggests that teen girls are far more likely than boys to engage in distracted driving behavior. according to a survey of 2,000 young drivers girls are 15% more likely to engage in distracted driving habits.

on a positive note only 2% of females and 3% of males admitted to having alcohol play a part in their risky driving behaviors. live stormtracker two, picking up more rain out there. most of the activity now is north and east of the bay area. toward san jose a little in the eastern part there. out by antioch in discovery bay, and brentwood, we've got heavier rainfall. rainfall accumulations about a quarter of an inch in the heaviest locations. we've seen a tenth of an inch or less for the rest of us. still a good wetting out there. more light rain in the forecast. that's what we're talking about now, a chance for morning showers. it will be cooler tomorrow. these two weather systems, pretty weak. cooler tomorrow, because of system number 2, which is weak, but it's cold. so here's system 1, that's why it was warm today.

that's the showers generated now. there's system 2. completely different weather system, coming from the north, a little more cool air. doesn't have a lot of moisture with it, so we're not expecting a lot of rain or any kind of real event from this, other than light sprinkles, and maybe a bit of drizzle. you can see it coming up the coast. it brought heavy rain to point conception. showers should be tapering off later on tonight. this system picks up the pace around 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. and springs really light sprinkles. probably lighter than what we saw today. at 10:00 tonight, most of the activity is toward antioch in the east. here comes system number 2. it doesn't look like much. we'll watch it, but right now, you see paulson in here tomorrow morning, they'll be tracking this. and any wet on the roadways on a thursday morning commute will slow you down. so be ready for that. the rest of the week, thursday looks pretty nice. these forecast highs, you get the feel for it. much cooler than today. that's because this system coming from the north, it's a
