we are live in san jose where swat teams have moved in on an house. why they want the people inside out and what their possible connection is to a homicide victim. >> one person in the hospital this morning after a fire in an apartment high-rise in san francisco.

breezy. here is sal. >> this is a look at 237. we showed you 880 in the same area. you can tell people are out there. also early this morning this car burst into flames right near highway 580. firefighter were able to put out the car fire and a nearby pole caught fire. several explosions caught fire fears off guard. check this out the firefighters were inside and then boom. the circuit for the air bags blew up. they had to be careful with this one. let's go back to the desk. we begin 6:00 with breaking news we have been following since 4:30 this morning. right now police are surrounding a san jose neighborhood after a fatal stabbing. ktvu tara moriarty is at the scene with what is happening right now. tara. >> reporter: we just heard a

flash bang grenade go off to the right. if you look down the street there is quite a few police officers. down there that is the 200 block of cleveland. neighbors tell us the home down there is a little bit different. it has raiser wire fences. they say they have noticed that sort of sketchy people have been coming in and out at all times. there is cameras stationed at the home. that is where they believe police are at the moment and swat teams have been moving in. that is because the people who initially called 911 about a homicide told police that they are armed and not coming out. it all started just before 2:00 this morning when police got a call about a stabbing. they responded to cleveland avenue where they found a man suffering from stab wounds. they performed cpr on the victim. they were take ton the hospital -- he was taken to the hospital where he was presumed dead. the people inside refused to cooperate. saying they had firearms and

told police to back off. that is where we are right now. we don't note the connection between the victim and these people. we heard a huge bang go off. we believe it was a flash grenade. there is no spokesperson out here to inform us with what is happening but we will do our best live. 6:03. we are following developing news in san francisco. an overnight fire one person is in the hospital already. ktvu allie rasmus is live at the scene with the details of what happened. >> reporter: the fire is out but fire investigators are still out here trying to figure out how it happened. it happened at an apartment building in san francisco. behind us you can see one of the ladder trucks they used in this fire is just now pulling out of the driveway about three hours after this fire happened. they needed that ladder truck

and two others because this fire was on the eighth floor of this apartment high-rise. that is where fire investigators are right now. we saw them walking around the balcony. the fire started at 2:30 this morning. firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke throughout the shared eighth floor public hallway. they pinpointed that smoke coming from a single unit apartment building. that man that lived there was transported to the hospital for burn injuries and smoke inlalation. they didn't evacuate the other residence. because of the construction they knew the fire would not spray. they tole other residents stay incoarse. >> we leave them that n their apartments. we check them to make sure they

are okay. >> reporter: several other residents were evaluated by paramedics at the scene. no one else was sent to the hospital. and the fire was out by 3:00 this morning. there is still an investigation going on. firefighters are still inside that eighth floor apartment unit trying to figure out how this fire started. no reports if smoke alarms in that apartment unit were working on not. the investigation is under way into an east bay cab drivers terrifying ordeal. paul chambers joins us with details of a carjacking, a kidnapping, and armed robbery. paul. >> good morning, pam. within the last half hour we talked to cab drivers out here. they are shaken up with what is going on. it all started right here at this pittsburgh bart station. they want to warn riders to be on the lookout for a stolen

cab. antioch police say around 11:30 last night three men hopped in a cab. investigators say the man asked the driver to take them proan apartment complex that's where they jacked the cabby. >> arriving at the apartment complex they took him out at gunpoint. they had him open the trunk and forced them in the trunk of the vehicle. they then left. >> reporter: they drove to the oakland hill where is they dropped off the cabby. >> when you stop at the stop sign took the gun in the backseat. give it to me one, two, three, four. about five minutes he was inside the car with he. >> reporter: here is a description of the stolen cab

car. license plate 8z27362. the men inside considered armed and dangerous. if you know anything about this you are asked to call the police. we are live here in pittsburgh we will stay on top of this i'm paul chambers. 6:07. you drivers that depend on doyle drive you are being warned about major changes starting tonight and through the weekend. doyle drive will be shut down at 8:00 p.m. so traffic can be moved on to a temporary bypass. claudine wong is in the studio to tell you what is happening. >> the driver tas are using doyle drive will be the last to do so. doyle drive will shut down for go. a lot of work these to be done so to make room for all of the work crews will be put all the traffic on a temporary bypass. to make that transition you have top shut down traffic

through doyle drive which is a major artery linking san francisco to the knot bay-- to the north bay. and your best advice really is no avoid that area all together if you can. if you can't avoid it, however, and still need to get in and out of the city, you still can. here's how the trip is going to change for you. we put up this map to show you how things go through. this is doyle drive. you can still get into the city. you will do that through highway 1 which will be connected through the golden gate bridge. delays will be through there. remember all this starts at 8:00 tonight and should be completed by 5:00 a.m. on monday. >> the golden gate transit district is doubling ferry

that is pretty cool. the traffic is moving along. the camera goes black. very good. northbound 101 as you drive in san francisco that looks pretty good driving up to the 80 split with no major issues. i want to take a look at hayward, union city, fremont. this traffic gets a little slower. westbound 92 it looks like there is a minor crash on the right shoulder. as we move the maps over to antioch westbound 4 a little slow right through the middle of antioch. the rest of the commute that looks good. interstate 680 from 242 to walnut creek looks fine. 80 westbound it's a very nice drive. at 6:11 let's go to steve. >> all right sal. a very happy friday morning. it's clear out there. upper 30s. i will show you that in a second. after a week of tropical clouds and cold front yesterday temperatures will rebound. yesterday was the coolest day of the week. came in right as advertised.

welcome back. time now is 6:15. the threat of a monkey pox outbreak lead to the three hour quarantine of a plane fullover people. when the delta airlines flight landed at midway airport, a team of people in hazardous material suits boarded the plane. the team from the center for disease control and prevention were inspecting a suspicious rash on a female passenger. she was traveling back from africa and suspected of carrying monkey pox. it's a rare viral disease found mainly in central and western africa and it can be fatal. >> am i going to get off this plane? am i going to make it back

home. >> is it airborne? is it viral? what is it? >> passengers had a lot of questions but the cdc says it was determined the woman was not carrying monkey pox and there was no threat to the other passengers. 6:16 we are finding out more about the case of mad cow disease discovered in the central valley. they announced earlier this week it found the case while testing a dead cow. it's a rendering plant. now we have learned what lead to the death of the cow. it had been euthanized at a tarry after they became ill and lays down. the house is about to vote on whether to freeze the student loan rates that are set to double this summer. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us how political fighting could leave the students paying

the higher rate. >> reporter: no one wants to see student loan rates double this summer but there is no agreement here between democrats and republicans on how to pay for an extension. the u.s. house came into session about ten minutes ago. here's a live look at the house floor as debate begins on extending that 3 hadn't 4% -- 3.4% rate. democrats call that republican plan a poison pill. they have their own plan to pay for the extension through tax increases on some businesses. president obama has been visiting colleges to cam pin for the democratic plan but the senate vote on that is not until next month. there has been no talk on trying to strike a deal. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns.

6:18. today cal state university employees are set to finish voting on whether or not to go on strike. teachers, counselors, and librarians started voting april 16th. the 24,000 members say they haven't had a raise in four years. voting on whether or not to authorize rolling two day strikes beginning during the summer session. big safety changes in response to this months tragedy near the fallon islands. u.s. coast guard has suspended all sailing competitions outside the golden gate. coast card commander in san francisco issued the order yesterday nearly two weeks after the accident that killed five members of the yacht racing team. the order will effect the race scheduled for this weekend. tomorrows duck ship race now becomes a bay race instead of an ocean race. autopsy will be performed today on a body found in bodega

bay. it's too early to determine if that body is one of the four missing crew members from that yacht. are you still watching the bridges? >> we are. we are looking at the san mateo bridge and the other commutes. first we are starting with everyone's favorite highway, highway 4 westbound it looks great, doesn't it? as you come up through the area. bart trance already. people have to drive through there. this morning it's a little better than normally. we mention the san mateo bridge. there was an earlier collision near the toll plaza that has been moved to the side. it looks like it could be a little windy. the walter is moving around quite a bit. nothing too bad for your drive across. and this mornings commute is going to be moderately heavy. at 6:20 here is steve.

clouds. a lot of 60s mid and around the bay. upper as you get inland. this time of year you can rebound really fast. we will into the weekend. there is surprising news on the cost of living in this country. americans paid about 60 cents a mile. that is up slightly more than a penny than the year before. target stores recalling more than quarter million sipy cups. they create a hazard because they are designed to look like rabbits. the bunny ears could pose a choking hazard or poke the child in the eye. target has received three reports of children that were hurt by the cups. a perfect story for this

good morning. traffic is moving along nicely. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that is a very nice commute. very few car there is. a lot of open space. no problems getting on the bridge. may be a little windy on that span. happening right now the president, president obama and first lady michelle obama taking a live look. they are about to board air force one heading to georgia. president and first lady here we go. heading out of the helicopter this morning. they will visit fort stewart army post while there the president will sign an executive order designed to prevent flaunt marketing and recruiting practices aimed at military families there are growing complaints about post secondary and technical schools that misrepresent themselves

two military families were eligible for federal education loans around the gi mill. time is 6:26. a huge great white shark like that one was captured in mexico. it could have ties to the northern california coastline. now it's a 20-foot female shark accidentally captured last week in the sea of cortez. that is when shawn a shark researcher from dan is a cruz was captured by a woman that said a giant fish had one of his tags. >> i received the photo and notification and then comes the news story starting south and moving north about the big shark these guys caught. >> he says he's not sure if the tag is his but if it is it was placed on the shark between 1995 and 2003 in the monterey bay. he says heelings that information -- he said he uses that information to monitor the life history and the travel of

building. you can see some of the damage now that the sun has come up. there is very visible smoke damage around that window on the eighth floor of this building. fire investigators just left the scene around 15 minutes ago they were out here for the last four hours trying to piece together how this fire began. a short time ago investigators were sifting through the burnt up contents. one of the things they are trying to figure out if the smoke alarms were working in that apartment. the fire started around 2:30 this morning. it was around that time that the security monitor that works the front desk got a frantic call for help. >> a resident called down and said there is a man screaming from the top of the eighth floor. at the eighth floor i walked outside i could see the smoke coming from the ceiling and a man screaming, yelling. and busting out the window.

>> that man the one resident was taken to the hospital. several other residents were evaluated by paramedics at the scene. no other residents had to go to the hospital. the fire did not spread to any of the other units a along with the cause of the fire one thing they are looking into whether the smoke alarms were working correctly. back out here live you can see some of the damage on that eighth floor apartment building. one interesting thing the fire chief the assistant fire chief that was out here told us they didn't evacuate the other residents. they knew because of the type of construction here they knew the fire wouldn't spread and it was safest for all the residents to stay indoors. live in san francisco allie rasmus. happening now a hearing in sanford florida to consider requests by media organizations. i want to take you there live

this morning. zimmerman's attorney was also expected to inform the judge about $200,000 in donations raised online for zimmerman. he learned about the money on wednesday. he says zimmerman said he was broke when a judge set his bail at $150,000 last friday. a high profile criminal defense attorney says the money discovery could send zimmerman back to jail. >> you've got more money stash in the -- you think you can pay the judge and be gone? >> zimmerman faces second degree murder charges for the shooting of trayvon martin. oak plan thrist are looking for the -- police say there was some kind of confrontation.

that teenager was shotguns in the west we are still following breaking news. a neighborhood in san jose waking up to police flash bangs and swat teams. tara moriarty is there now. there has been a fatal stabbing and that led to this early morning police action. >> reporter: swat team surrounded the home about four hours egg. right after our last live shot we heard flash bang grenades go off. let's take a listen. police got a 911 call just before 2:00 this morning. when they arrived they found a man suffering stab wounds. they did cpr. now officers knocked on the door where the 911 call originated but the people inside refused to cooperate.

they said they had firearms and told police to back off. officers pulled back and called in the swat team. one knife -- it's a rougher. there is a home that has a lot of pit bull out. neighbors tell us they are referring to the home where the resident run a plumbing business. we are not really sure which home it is because it's out of our range of sight. it's around the corner. the home is around the contort right there. we don't know the connection between the victim and these people that are in the standoff with police. but as we mentioned there is a perimeter set up here. and we're in the burbank

business area. an officer arrived on scene he is getting information. we'll bring that information to you coming up. time now 6:36. alcohol may have -- the driver i jump the -- the driver was rushed to the hospital. this morning one man is being investigated for driving drunk after crashing into an ac transit bus. just before 2:00 a.m. the bus was crossing through west grand avenue at telegraph in oakland. that is when it was hit by a truck. police say ran a red light. the impact knocked out the glass on both the front and rear doors of the bus.

no one was hurt. that man was arrested at the scene. drivers that depend on doyle drive being warned about major changes tonight and through the whole weekend. that artery going to be shut down at 8:00 p.m. so traffic could be moved on a temporary bypass. claudine wong joins us more on the subject. >> drivers coming in and out of the city have used doyle drive. tonight all that changes. the last drivers will cross that roadway tonight and then it gets shut down for the weekend so crews could move traffic on a temporary bypass. doyle drive is the major artery linking san francisco to the north bay. a lot of people will be -- your best advice really is to avoid that area all together if you can. but if you can't avoid it and still need to get in, you can. we want to give you a better idea how that trip in and out of the city is going to change.
