stabbing victim. then a homeowner refused to come out and cooperate with police. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live to let us know how it ended. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: it has ended peacefully so that's the good news although it's now turned into a homicide investigation. the man who holed himself up into his house for a few hours has surrendered. >> there were no indications that there were hostages. we are happy to report there was a peaceful resolution to this. >> reporter: that was the sound of a flash grow nay used earlier this morning to try to get the man out of the house. we watched the s.w.a.t. team did a sweep of the home and the backyard which they are now treating as a crime scene. about a quarter to 2:00, police received a 911 call from someone inside the house off

cleveland avenue. when they arrived, a 51-year- old man was lying in the front of the home suffering stab wounds. he later died at the hospital. officers spoke to a man plays say is roger gantzerrt who neighbors say owned a plumbing business. the home was found to have several guns. >> there were surveillance cameras, pitbull, something that is overkill for a neighborhood >> reporter: police did not confirm that the person they have is roger gantzert. still no word on the relationship to the homicide victim. according to the neighbors, there are several people who live inside of this home. no word on whether they will face any charges. live from san jose, i'm tara

moriarty. a man is in the hospital after his eighth floor apartment unit caught fire. it happened this morning in san francisco. the man is now being treated at st. francis hospital for burn and smoke inhalation. several other residents were evaluated at the scene. the building security guard says he received a frantic call from a neighbor. >> a resident called down and said that there is a man screaming from the top of the 8th floor. so at the 8th floor, i walked out side. i could seat smoke coming from the ceiling and a man screaming, yelling and busted out the window. >> fire investigators sifted through burned contents of the apartment trying to determine if the smoke detectors were working. police are searching for suspects after a cab driver was abducted overnight, forced into the cab's trunk and released

later. ktvu's paul chambers joins with us more. good afternoon, paul. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. the cab was taken here from this place. it has now been towed away. a tow truck driver is loading up this yellow cab. the driver was carjacked in antioch and nine hours later, people who heard about the missing vehicle and heard it in the news called police. >> they called our officers and a couple of our officers were able to locate the vehicle. a yellow cab driver picked up three men from the pittsburg b.a.r.t. station and took them to an and. complex in antioch when he was robbed. >> one of the suspects was armed. he was forced into the trunk at gunpoint, driven out to oakland. >> reporter: the gunman stole the cab driver's jewelry, cell phone and money and dumbed him

off along joaquin mill road. the driver was not injured but was able to get help from police when he flagged down a passerby. antioch police say this is not an ordinary crime in the area but cab drivers do get robbed here a few times a year. we spoke to a friend of the carjacked cab driver who says he, too, was robbed two years ago when he picked up a man at the b.a.r.t. sub station. >> he had a gun, said, give it to me, one, two, three, four, five, give it to me. >> reporter: dealing with this latest case, investigators say that a few nights ago, a similar incident happened locally where a cab driver was put in the back that have trunk but that cab which was later ditched was found also in this general area. as of right there, there have not been any arrest in either case. paul chamber, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, paul. there is a safety standdown in response to this month's

yatch racing. the u.s. coast guard has now suspended all yatch competition outsigh the golden gate. the issue was ordered yesterday nearly two weeks after the accident that killed five members of a yatch racing team. the decision has angered many bay area sailors. >> you just can't stop a community from doing what they love. part of the therapy is actually going out there and being part of it again. reliving it and working it. >> the order will affect a rest scheduled for this weekend. tomorrow's duck ship race now becomes a bay race instead of an ocean race. the boats must stay within a mile of the golden gate. there will be no race permits issued for future ocean races until further notice. an autopsy will be performed today on a body discovered monday near tagedda bay. authorities say it's too early

the main alternative will be park presidio boulevard. the six-lane street also nope as highway 1 links to is the avenue, south of golden gate park. a lot of traffic will use that road to get to the golden gate bridge. all bay area drivers should keep in mind that the doyle drive closure could make traffic bad in other parts of the bay area including an increase of traffic on the bay bridge. that's because are going to be use that go route to get into san francisco. people in the east bay who want to head into the city this weekend may want to consider using b.a.r.t. the best bet for the weekend might be the ferries. golden gate transity says it will double the usual number of boats this weekend. both go to the ferry terminal on the embarcadero in san francisco. there ace ferry that goes to at&t park but that one is

already sold out for tonight's giants game. we have posted more information on the doyle drive detour and transit information on ktvu.com. just click on the doyle drive tab at the top of the front page. new information now about the cost of driving in this country. aaa says that americans paid about 60 cents a mile to drive their cars during 2011, up slightly more than a penny compared to the year before. that surprised amists who expected prices to gun more than that because drivers are keeping their cars longer, they are maintaining more of their value. alcohol may have been involved in a rollover crash in hayward. the car landed on its roof near vermont and b street last night around 11:45. the driver apparently swerved on a turn. the vehicle hit a telephone pole, jumped the curb and broke some support wires. the driver was taken to the hospital. no one else was hurt.

at least 12 people were delayed early this morning when this a c transit bus was hit in an oakland intersection. just before 2:00 a.m., the bus was crossing through draped avenue and telegraph in oakland. that's when it was hit by a truck that police say ran a red light. the impact broke the glass on both the front and rear door of the bus. no one was injured. the man was arrested at the scene. two bay area cyclists apartly struck by a driver in berkeley are now sharing dramatic video on youtube. a man identified as bruno uploaded this video from a bicycle mounted camera which shows a small dark car hitting the cyclists on tunnel road. the two are knocked to the ground and the car takes off. cyclists seem to be okay. bruno wrote that he filed a police report and that officers locate the car and the owner. we are working to confirm all of this with berkeley police and we'll follow up on the later newscast pg&e says that a surveillance video from a

control center the night of the san bruno pipeline explosion never existed. the california public utilities commission requested the surveillance video from september 9, 2010 when the pipeline explosion and fire in san bruno killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. initially, pg&e said that the video has been inadvertently reported over. now, according to the fran chronicle, pg&e says it has discovered that the surveillance camera and the control center was not operating that night. a heavy dump truck left a bridge in hillsboro badly damaged and broke water, gas and sewer lines along wit. the san mateo daily journal provided this picture of this collapse. the the truck was filled with river rocks and got stuck after the privately owned bridge collapsed. authorities say it took more than three hours and two big rigs to pull the truck off the bridge and cap those lines.

there is a bidding war now between two foreign companies wanting to build b.a.r.t.'s new fleet of cars. this is animation of what the new fleet will look like. b.a.r.t. staff had recommended that the contract go to canada's bombardier. its bid was 1 1/2 billion dollars. now a french company is offering a price slightly higher, but it says at least most of its parts will be made in the u.s. compared to bombardier's 60%. b.a.r.t. will decide next month this sounds like something out of a science fiction movie. the entreprise has landed. enterprise was built in 1976 and has never actually flown in space. it was a prototype for the

going to be gorgeous for opening day on sunday. we have winds to about 12 miles per hour right now at sfo. low 60s in our forecast. san francisco, oakland, low 60, san jose, livermore, 63. concord, low 60s, even mitt to upper 620s now in areas around santa rosa, again, warmer than what we felt yesterday and this trend will be with us for the weekend. the system pushed off to the east after bringing us some rain and you can begin now to see this ridge building over the pacific. this is going to nudge over california. saturday and sunday are going to be the warmest days of the weekend. giving you a look here, sunday is did definitely going to be the longer one. another five to eight degrees warmer on saturday and sunday, five degrees or so of warming, expected over the inland areas. for today, 74 expected. mid-60s in berkeley, oakland, 66. head to the north bay, going to be nice. seasonal temps right on target.
