part of drive is now gone, we're 12 hours into the demolition of that roadway and we'll show you the progress crews made overnight. it may be closed but that's not stopping a lot of events planned for this weekend. where traffic could be the heaviest. >> if a woman is rescued from her burning apartment. what happened and how firefighters were able to find her!

good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, april 28th. >> we have another nice weekend in store. rosemary has a quick look at your forecast. good morning, rosemary! >> good morning to you. we will be warming up once again, numbers from 5 to 10 degrees above yesterday. here are some of the highs for our areas on friday. today we're looking at 80 degrees for santa rosa, 70 san francisco, 80 in concord, and 77 in areas right around san jose. a nice warm-up in the afternoon, a cool started. we'll look at your current conditions coming up. after the demolition of doyle drive is underway. the closure went into effect last night. here's what this will do for your travel in and out of the city. doyle drive is closed. you cannot get to marina boulevard or lumbard street like you usually would through that intersection. doesn't mean you can't get into san francisco. highway 1 is still open.

and once you get through highway 1, you pop into the macarthur tunnel. you have to get left eventually down california street, or possibly geary. we just got word a photographer out there at the intersection of geary and presidio. it's a four-way stop and you can turn left on geary. again, usually you cannot turn left there. so expect gridlock because now it's a four-way stop in both directions. >> and it's not going to be just this area that's affected because people are going to be trying to get in and out of city so they'll look for some alternate routes. that is something to keep in mind it. will affect the whole bay area. >> if you're in marin county, thinking about the richmond-san rafael bridge that's one way, jump on 580 to 80, then across the bay bridge. there was heavy traffic last night, it's different, friday evening commute but possibly also expect delays there if you're going to head across the richmond-san rafael bridge. and don't forget about the ferries also. they've doubled their service. they're leaving larkspur and

sausalito. >> this is all going to be in place until monday morning. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us with the latest. >> reporter: we talked to the project spokeswoman this morning. she says everything is going right according to plan, right on schedule. and you can see some of the progress they've made overnight. behind us you can see the excavators tearing away at what was left of -- what is left of doyle drive. we are about 50 feet away. this is about the closest we can bring you to the demolition. we're inside the construction project headquarters. you can see it eye level with doyle drive. overnight the drills, hammers, excavators and still doing their work, in fact this is where what is left of doyle drive ends, right here. overnight they were doing their work. they all started around 8:00 last night, crunching away at the top deck of doyle drive. and doyle drive is gone now from mcdowell drive all the way

to the mid-point of chrissy field. the work started at 8:00 last night. they cleared the road. demolition is supposed to be complete by 8:00 tonight. so 24 hours, first 24 hours is just tearing down the roadway. and so far there have been no delays or problems with the project. >> it really went like clockwork last night. it was pretty amazing, the marina ramp closed at 7, doyle entirely closed at 8. and the machines were tearing it down, and within 10 minutes. and they've made enormous progress. >> reporter: now this is an animation of what doyle drive or the former doyle drive will look like, come monday morning. it won't be called doyle drive anymore. the roadway will be closed until 5 a.m. monday because after the demolition is over, they have to build some temporary roads and bring in asphault, and stripe the new roads. there will be a new bridge people will come off, drive through from the golden gate bridge off 101 into san francisco. they'll go through a new

tunnel, and then they'll see new temporary roads that will bring them into san francisco. but back out here live, you can see these excavators doing their work. they keep moving further back away from where we're standing. take down the top deck of doyle drive, piece by piece. and we've seen them just kind of crunch through with these machines, just crunch through the rebar and concrete there, but they'll continue their work and we'll continue to bring updates on the progress here throughout the morning. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. you can expect -- to be very busy today. it is now a four-way stop there at geary and park presidio. again, left turns are being allowed from park presidio. that could cause problems as the intersection has been turned into a four-way stop. despite the warnings of traffic jams, there are a number of popular events in marin and san

francisco this weekend. the giants are playing at at&t park against the san diego padres. there's a game tonight at 6. and last night fans from the north bay told us they're heeding the warnings and looking for better options into and out of the city. >> we're going through the presidio and look around. i have a secret way that everybody else probably knows. >> my son never been on the ferry so this will be the first time. >> you see you're not going to be missing -- stuck in traffic? >> not at all. >> and the ferry will be a popular mode of transit this weekend. it's doubling its service from larkspur and sausalito. we're have continuing coverage all morning long. you can also get a closer look at detours on the doyle drive tab at ktvu.com. a woman is recovering this morning after being rescued from her burning apartment by firefighters. around 10:30 last into the the woman was cooking at her hayward home and then went upstairs to lie down when she woke up the apartment was on

fire. firefighters say she stood up, took a deep breath and passed out. they found her when she started covering during their search for survivors. >> the guys did a great job getting in and out as quickly as they did. >> the woman was alert and talking at the hospital and is expected to recover. those are her two small dogs, also rescued from the fire. and they weren't injured. show you video a house fire in alameda last night. flames and smoke were visible for miles. it started in one home and then took about 45 minutes to get under control. the home is on either side of that one also caught on fire and were also damaged by flames. no one was injured in the fire, but six people are now homeless and two cats and a dog are unaccounted for. berkeley police have arrested a man in connection with a hit-and-run that was caught on tape.

he is 43-year-old michael patrick, he reported his car stolen after the cash and crash but it was found yesterday morning and police then tracked down him in jack london square. he was arrested on felony hit- and-run and drug charges. the crash was reported and posted on youtube. the two bicyclists were not severely hurt. the body of one of the victims of the deadly fairlawn islands yachting crash has been found. the body was found thursday near the fair lawns. he was one of five killed two weeks ago when the yacht was overtaken by waves. three sailors remain missing at sea. three others were rescued and survived. a body recovered on wednesday is not related to that deadly yacht crash. the man is 58-year-old brian christopher of sonoma.

overnight thousands of cal state university employees turned in their final votes on whether to authorize a strike. members of the california faculty association began voting back on april 16th after contract negotiations failed. they had until midnight to cast their ballot. union leaders say they expect members to support a strike declaration. the union represents 24,000 professors, counselors and other staff on 23 csu campuses. the results. vote will be announcend on wednesday. a group of people okay flying a 10-acre plot of land is planning a weekend of activities on that site. that land is owned by cal and right now about 80 protestors are living there. they say they're setting up for the big weekend that will hopefully draw several hundred people to the farm. activities include yoga, meditation, farming, and teach inns. the protestors say they want the farm preserved for sustainable agriculture. it's take back unwanted prescription drug day, from 10

good morning to you! a live look there downtown oakland. sunshine just pouring into the bay area for your weekend. 60s, 70s, and a few low 80s today. residents of southeast colorado are getting their first look at the damage caused by a series of tornadoes. the storm ripped through the area late thursday night and early yesterday morning. emergency workers say the tornadoes destroyed at least seven buildings, leaving behind a pile of rubble. they say the severe weather hit

mostly rural farming communities, sparing the more populated areas. the southeast is mark, one year since deadly tornado outbreak. one of the hardest hit areas was tuscaloosa, alabama where rick is live as the community marks a somber anniversary. rick. >> reporter: mike, yeah, it's within one year since the big event, and there's so many stories that we're hearing from this. one of the amazing stories is from this woman here, amy and kristin. you were in your home when the tornado hit, but you didn't end up in the same spot after it hit? >> no. we were thrown a hundred yards. my husband said it was about to hit us so i went into the bedroom to get the other two, big ones, but it was too late. >> if you had kristin in your arms? >> yes. >> and you tried to -- had to get out because were you trapped. so in order to get to your other kids -- >> hi to break my foot. hi to put her out and then just hold my breath and break my

late night mass shooting next to a central valley university. it happened just after 11 p.m. near fresno state. police responded to a call with gunfire and when they arrived at the scene they found one person dead and four others wounded inside an apartment building. the shooter remains at large. it's unclear if the victims were college students. a 16-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot near santa ana high school in southern california. police say the boy was walking with a friend when he was shot in the chest yesterday afternoon. his friend who wasn't hurt tried to get his friend home but police found him first. they are now looking for the shooter. witnesses describe him as a stocky man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. the younger brother of 49ers tight end vernon davis is facing assault charges in washington, d.c. and police are investigating his connection to three similar attacks, including one that resulted in a man's death. michael davis was arrested thursday night, accused of hitting a woman in the head with a hammer. there are three other similar

attacks under investigation in the washington, d.c. area. police say davis lives within a 10-block radius of those attacks. the man who shot and killed trayvon martin received $200,000 from his website, but george zimmerman's family did not disclose it before hess freed on bond. he was freed on a $150,000 bond on monday. his lawyer says he didn't know about the money when he asked a judge for a bond last week. he said the family took out a second mortgage and used only $5 thaw from from website to bail out zimmerman. >> they could easily have made a maneuver to get to that money and they didn't some that is a response to the state that they were not holding, hiding and planning something else with this money but that's didn't use it. >> the judge says he may revisit the issue after he learns more about the money. the website has been taken down but the defense says it's starting to others. the defense and prosecution are arguing over to allow evidence of a sex tape in the trial of john edwards. yesterday the judge said she

would not allow any questions about a sex tape until she has ruled whether the tape will be admissible in court. the decision came while defense attorneys cross-examined andrew young, a former aide of edwards. he allegedly threatened to release the tape and expose edwards' affair. in the race for the white house, the republican candidates are courting the use vote. mitt romney stroke so a group of students in ohio yesterday. he focused on the economy saying his proposal to lower the tax rate will help small businesses create jobs. >> if your priority is to punish people, president obama's got a volt for. if your priority is to get more good jobs, i'm the right guy to vote for. >> romney did not speak about the student loan issue but earlier he did support extending the lower interest rates if congress does not act that rate will double on july 1. g.o.p. candidate ron paul held a rally at the university of houston.

models are pointing to the possibility on thursday, so i'll be watching that for you. back to you. today rescuers will return to huntington beach to see it if a stranded dolphin has made its way back to sea. it was found yesterday stuck in the shallow whetted lands. one experts tried to approach, they wouldn't let them get close. they say this means that the dolphin is healthy and strong. so they decided to 73 they it could find its own way back to the ocean. cab drivers on alert, a warning from police after a string of robberies connected to oakland. and we have continuing coverage on that demolition work underway on doyle drive. they had still working right now. we have a live update on the progress and how you can get around the closure this weekend.

[ male announcer ] celebrate the little things. buy any kfc 10 pc meal or larger and get a free double chocolate chip cake. shut it down to traffic. at this hour, demolition is underway on doyle drive. but there is still a lot of work to be done before traffic through that major artery can start flowing again. and good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. our top story this morning is doyle drive. you're taking a look at a map of the closures. that red line shows you doyle drive, which is shut down. marina boulevard and lombard street, you can get to those places through 101. you can still get through this area on the golden gate bridge through highway 1, but obviously that's a significant

detour. ktvu's allie rasmus has been checking in on the progress being made. and she has joined us now with an update. >> reporter: we've been watching the demolition as it happens. right now we're standing inside the demolition project headquarters. this is where they're monitoring the progress and you can see the progress they've made so far right through the windows. it's about 50 feet away from doyle drive, or what you can see is now left of doyle drive. and this is about the closessest we can bring you at eye level to show you the work they're during now. you can see there are two giant machines there with giant claws at the end and they're just tearing away what was the top deck of doyle drive of dry. this is a careful demolition process. there are two machines. earlier we saw drills, they were puncturing the concrete first, then once the concrete seems to start falling away, you can see it it falling away now -- then the other machines with the claws come in and tear away the re where and the

concrete there. and just a bill 10 feet away from where those claws are, you can see where doyle drive just drops off. a wig portion of doyle drive is gone already from about the area where the sports basement is and chrissy field all the way to about the mid-point. and this is just on the west end of doyle drive, on the of the side of roadway there's another demolition crew there that is taking down the roadway from the ground level. we talked to the project spokeswoman this morning. they said everything is on schedule so far they've had no problems, they're tearing down the road piece by piece and she explained how they'll do it. >> they're working synchronized effort, and so they take the deck down first. once they get the deck down, they cut the girders, which are the middle big beams, and then they'll be able to work on the columns. >> the work started 8:00 last night, and it should take 24 hours to completely take down

doyle drive and the deck of the roadway. so 24 hours that work should be done. and then this is what an making of what drivers will see come monday morning. when drivers come off the golden gate bridge on 101 monday morning, they will see a new bridge and part of a new tunnel, then a new temporary road that will bring those drivers into san francisco. but back out here live, again, you're looking at the demolition process underway here. doyle drive, you can see the two giant machines tearing away at the concrete upper deck. doyle drive. and this demolition by 8:00 tonight, the plan is this roadway will be gone. but we'll continue to keep an eye on the situation here and get updates about the progress crews continue to make. the work goes on as scheduled right now. you can expect park presidio to be very busy today. you're take a live look at that

intersection. left turns are being allowed from park presidio on to geary boulevard. but that could cause problems as the intersection has been turned into a four-way stop. it's already busy this morning. you can see there are people out there. there's the folks in the bright fluorescent jackets, helping people get in and out of there, helping the pedestrians get across. it does tend to back things up. so keep that in mind if you're headed over there and using park presidio on to geary. there are several ways from san francisco to marin county. the first will be taking the bay bridge to the san rafael bridge to the north bay. it took our crew 33 minutes yesterday afternoon to cross the two spans and travel the 22 1/2 mile distance. you can also get to the golden gate through geary boulevard or california street and highway 1. >> if people act as they normally do, decide it's a great weekend to ride your bike or take the ferry, then we'll

be okay. but as it is, 19th avenue on a normal weekend is packed. >> for locals there are ways around the main detours. routes like 25th and lincoln are open to the bridge. but be warned, those roads are not designed to handle a lot of traffic. and so when they get a lot of traffic, guess what -- you've got gridlock. people are boeing advised to just leave the car at home and you can do that. just take the ferry. the golden gate transit district is doubling its services from both sausalito and larkspur. reservations for the giants ferry already sold out. but baseball fans can take ferry service to the ferry building, and then walk or ride muni to at&t park for the game tonight and tomorrow afternoon. we are going to have continuing coverage of the doyle drive closure all morning long and you can of course get a closer look at the detours on the doyle drive tab of ktvu.com. this morning the family of sierra lamar will announce an

increase in the reward for the missing teenager safe returning. right no that reward is set at $10,000. there's another volunteer search today in morgan hill. the 15-year-old has been missing for six weeks. a patient at the napa psychiatric hospital is behind bars this morning accused of attempted murder. the hospital has a history of patients attacking other patients and staff members. 42-year-old anthony gray is charged with assaulting four people. the hospital released a brief statement saying a patient was allegedly threatened and later three staff members were allegedly injured. >> that's [bleep] now. he attacked me, beat me up. he could have killed me. hit me in the face, was trying to blind me with the pen, trying to gouge my eye with the pen. >> a psychiatric physician also tells ktvu she suffered a black eye and couldn't stop crying. item on the charges, the suspect could end up back at that hospital.

this weekend bay area taxi drivers on alert. oakland police put out a warning to 75 cab companies after three cab drivers were robbed this week. each case is connected to oakland, including the most recent. it started in antioch, where a trio of men commandeered a cab and put the driver into the trunk. they then drove more than 30 miles to the oakland hills and let the driver go unharmed, but not before stealing his cash, phone and jewelry. >> obviously, this is a violent crime. we're looking into the possibility that it's the same suspects. >> the cab was locate yesterday in east oakland. the robbers have not been located. as oakland records its 40th homicide of the year, there's a new program aimed at ridding the city of the violence. there was a forum last night at a youth group. they distributed their cell numbers, urging team to call before incidents get out of hand. among the speakers was a teenager left paralyzed after getting shot nine times this

year. >> i got shot up in the hospitalized, and nobody came to visit me. couple people came visit me. my real friends. but everybody that i thought that would be real -- turned out to be fake. >> a hopeful sign that the outreach program may be working after the talk, one teen turned over a handgun. san francisco police chief is marking one year as head of the department. coming up at 8:45, chief will join us live to look back on his first year and talk about the challenges still ahead. nadia lockyer's ex- boyfriend will not face assault charges. she resigned after an affair and substance abuse. she said he ex-boyfriend beat her last february. prosecutors referred the matter to the justice department. in a brief statement, the state

attorney certain why's office reviewed the office and determined it will not file charges. lockyer has not commented. san jose's fire department is fully staffed for the first time in years. 19 new recruits received their badges last night. san jose now has 651 firefighters, it's considered one of the thinnest fire departments for a city its size. nearly two years ago, 49 jobs were lost. 22 came back, each new recruit has previous firefighting experience. >> i'm not worried about the budget issues. i'm not worried about the pension. i'm here to live the dream. >> i just want the citizens to know we're here, we're definitely committed. >> the new firefighters come in with a 10% lower salary than the ones they replaced. and there are no guarantees that the jobs won't, cut again.

some of these firefighters say they'll be on the job as soon as form. america's cup is coming to the san francisco bay. mayor ed lee signed that official agreement yesterday. construction is already underway on piers 27 and 29 where the village is going to be set much. officials say the america's cup is just what the city needs to boost its tourism industry. >> the ability for people to see san francisco shine with this sort of activity is unparalleled. people are looking for something new. people are looking for new experiences. that is what defines visitor satisfaction. >> city officials also say hosting the america's cup will create about 8,000 jobs. and tomorrow is opening day on the pay marking the official start of the 2012 boating season in san francisco. it gets started at pier 39, the 95th annual boat parade also gets underway at noon. good morning to you! opening day on the bay going to be a gorgeous one.

good morning to you! a live look, from san rafael. a gorgeous start to the day. a cool start with a mild, warm afternoon. authorities in washington state have surrounded a bunker where they believe a man who allegedly murdered his wife and daughter is hiding. peter keller is inside that underground shelter. they've thrown teargas into it but they're not going in after him. keller is a survivalist and deputies think he's armed with guns and a gas mask. they also think the bunker might be booby-trapped. people who know keller and his family are stunned. >> he just adored her. one of the things that we'd seen was him actually just spontaneously going over and hugging his daughter. >> i hope he resists. because i want him to know had a bullet feels like. i'm angry. you know -- they were amazing people!

>> the bunker is believed to have multiple levels. police say keller has been building it for eight years. there's a new code of conduct for the secret service in the wake of prostitution scandal. the new rules prohibit agents from drinking excessively, visiting questionable establishments, or bringing foreigners to their hotel rooms. agents cannot drink alcohol within 10 hours of starting a shift, and some will also be accompanied by chaperones. 12 agents were implicated in the scandal during the president's trip to columbia, eight are no longer with the agency. and there's a new sex scandal involving the u.s. embassy in brazil. a former prostitute claims she and several others were hired by an embassy security team and three marines last november. an argument later erupted and she says a marine tossed her out of a van. she has photos of a broken collarbone and what appear to be tire marks across her abdomen. she has is now suing the u.s. embassy but prosecutors may file charges against the men's, the men have left the country and it's unclear if they would

ever be tried. al-qaeda is essentially gone, but its affiliates are still a threat. that's what america's counter- terrorist officials are saying a year after the raid on osama bin laden's compound. they say al-qaeda is becoming more decentralized. the threat of a nuclear chemical attack has gone down. but al-qaeda in yemen is stronger than it was six months ago, and the affiliate in north africa has broadened its base. >> it football an inspirational leader off the battlefield. that was incredibly important. but we have to remember, al- qaeda is bigger than the corps. >> meantime, the public will not be seeing any new images of the bin laden raid or his body any time soon. these images of an isolated osama bin laden may be all the public will ever see of the al- qaeda leader's fine days. a federal judge has sided with the obama administration, saying releasing the images and one video of the raid poses a threat to national security. the bin laden compound was bulldozed by the pakistanis in

february. a blind chinese lawyer is now under u.s. protection after he escaped house arrest. he posted this video on youtube detailing his detention and getaway. the political activist says he was beat on by the guards for the past 18 months. he slipped away during the night and was driven away by activists beijing, with secretary of state hillary clinton visiting china next week, american and chinese leaders are negotiating a resolution. he fears for his family, who is still under house arrest. he is a self-taught lawyer who lost his eyesight as a child from a fever. he was later imprisoned for exposing forced abortions and sterileizations in his village. a rebellion over a new law against marijuana in dutch coffee shops. a judge in holland is upholding a law that bans foreigners from buying marijuana in cafes. the government says it was getting complaints about drug tourists who stop in long enough to buy marijuana and then go back tome to sell it.

tourists upset about the law which does not apply to dutch citizens. >> come here to relax. and [not understandable] >> the new law goes into effect next year but the government and three different dutch cities says they will not go along with it. detroit tigers the fielder young is being investigated for a hate crime. he appeared in court yesterday after being arrested and charged with aggravated harassment in new york with a tigers playing the yankees. police say young got into a fight with a group of men outside a manhattan hotel and made an anti-semetic remark. the other man in the dispute had minor injuries. giants first baseman aubrey huff is thanking fans for their support and asking for privacy as he struggles with anxiety. he is on the 15-day disabled list with an anxiety disorder.

take you live to san francisco, to the intersection of park presidio in geary. something you don't see every day, that intersection is now a four-way stop. cars are being allowed to turn left on geary. why? because it's tied to the demolition of doyle drive. that 1.6-mile stretch of

roadway is now coming down and was built in 1936. new roadway is being built, and couple different phases. second phase will start, starting monday. if you'll use the golden gate today, be prepared for detours and delays. ktvu's allie rasmus will have a live update on the demolition process coming up at the top of the hour. continuing coverage now of the doyle drive demolition. the highway patrol started restricting traffic at 8:00 last night. and 12 hours later, heavy machinery is still chipping away at decades-old roadways. allie rasmus is live with the progress being made overnight. and what we should expect today. you got a great vantage point there. >> reporter: you can see it the progress that they've made so far. we've been watching them since we got here at 5:30 this morning. chip away at what was left or what you're looking at is no what is left of doyle drive. and we're not the only people here. there are about a dozen people out here who brought their cameras and they're coming to watch this demolition process happen. to give you an idea of how they're doing this work, they've got these drill hammers that first come out and they puncture three holes, big holes in the concrete to kind of undermine the concrete. then once it appears to start

breaking, they bring in a machine like this one with a giant claw at the end, that goes through and just crunches away at the concrete. and off to our left, we pan off, you can see it where doyle drive just completely -- wow! you hear lot this is what we've seen happen all morning. as they go through and break down doyle drive, you will see it's a methodical process. but at certain points you'll see big sections of the roadway just collapse. like in this video, that we'll show you now, this is about 20 minutes ago. we saw a huge section of the road just break off and tip over as they were doing the demolition work. now, of course while all this is going on the roadway is closed to traffic. and i have caused an inconvenience for drivers coming from the north bay from the golden gate bridge into san francisco. but the project spokeswoman explained why this demolition has to happen. >> it's a 1936 structure, there's just no other way. it has to go down, it is the

planning has been to minimize how long it's been closed. they've just took the 57 hours, so friday night to monday morning, trying not to impact the monday morning commute. >> the demolition should be complete by 8 tonight. but other work they have to do, putting in a new temporary roadway. so this whole area will be closed. doyle drive the roadways around doyle drive will be closed until 5 a.m. monday morning and this an animation of what the new doyle drive will look like come monday. it won't be called doyle drive but this is what drivers will see. they'll be coming off the bridge entering part of a new tunnel. and then there will be driving on a new temporary road that will bring them into san francisco. but back out here live, we just watch a huge section of doyle drive come down. we're on the eastern end of the doyle drive, but there's another crew -- the western end. there's another crew doing similar work on the eastern end

taking down the bridge from the ground level there. and here's a closer look at the weekend's closure. you can see there's going to be trouble getting to and from san francisco from the golden gate bridge. doyle drive in red, that's the shut-down part we've seen demolished this morning. after limits all weekend long but highway 1, that is still open. that goes to the avenues. again, this closure is set to last until 5:00 monday morning. and despite the closure there are a number of popular events in marin and san francisco this weekend. the giants are playing at at&t park against the padres. there's a game tonight at 6:00, and last night fans from the north bay told us they are heeding the warnings and are looking for better options into and out of the city. >> we're going through the

presidio, and look around. i have a secret way that everybody else probably knows. >> my son has never been on the ferry so this will be the first time. >> you're not going to be missing stuck in traffic? >> not at all. >> the fehr will be a popular mode of trance the this weekend. the golden gate ferry is doubling its service from larkspur. you can expect park presidio to be very busy today. right now want to give you a live look at the intersection of geary and park presidio. for folks heading south out of the tunnel, you can now turn left on to geary boulevard. that is not something you' every day. when it does happen it causes traffic delays along park presidio in both directions. so if you're heading north towards the golden gate bridge be be aware of that as well. and also give you a live look now at the golden gate bridge. and that almost looks like it's closed. there's three cars there driving by. so it appears people are right

now staying away from the project taking place there at drill to driver. stay with ktvu.com as the doyle drive demolition continues on our website you can also get a closer look at detours on the doyle drive tab. we'll also have continuing coverage of the closure all morning long. new this morning, hayward firefighters are being credited for pulling an unconscious woman from her burning apartment. if it happened at 10:30 last night. woman was cooking and went upstairs to lie down. when she woke up, her apartment was on fire. firefighters say she stood up, took a deep breath and passed out. when they found her they are able to do that because she started covering while they were searching for survivors. >> the guys did a great job getting her in out as quickly as they did. different time of day, different -- [not understandable] >> the woman is expected to

recover, and is at the hospital. it was alert and talking. her two small dogs are just fine. they were also rescued from the fire. show you video from the alameda fire department. this is a house fire that displaced six people last night. firefighters say the flames and smoke could be seen for miles. it took about 45 minutes to get under control. the the homes on either side of that home also caught fire and were also damaged by flames. no one was hurt in the fires but the family's cats and dogs are unaccounted for. berkeley police arrested a man in connection with a hit- and-run caught on tape. he is 43-year-old michael patrick maglia. he reported hayes car stolen but the car was found yesterday in oakland, then police tagged down the man in jack london square. he was arrested on felony hit- and-run and drug charges. police say he was driving the black car when he hit two bicyclists there on tunnel road on wednesday. the crash was recorded by a

camera mound on one of the bikes that was hit, then posted on youtube. the two bicyclists were not severely hurt. the body of one of the victims of the deadly fairlawn island yachting crash has been found. jordan frahm's body was found thursday. he was one of five sailors killed two weeks ago when their yacht was overtaken by waves. three sailors remain missing at sea three other crewmembers were rescued and survived. overnight, the final votes were turned in by cal state university employees on whether or not to authorize a strike. members of the california faculty association began voting on april 16th after contract negotiations failed. they have until midnight to casted their ballots. union leaders say they expect members to support a strike declaration. the union represents 24,000 professors, counselors and other staff on 23 csu campuses. the results of that vote are going to be announced on wednesday. good morning to you!

his weekly address president obama announced a crackdown on anyone deceiving veterans and service members about the gi bill. >> a college recruiter who visited a marine barracks and enrolled marines with brain jerusalem so severe that some couldn't recall what courses they signed them up for. >> the president and the first lady met with soldiers in fort stewart, georgia yesterday. he signed an executive order against unscrupulous college recruiters pressuring vets into signing high interest loans and misleading them about credit transfers and job placement programs. president obama is also defending the rights of women. he spoke at a women's leadership conference yesterday in washington. he tagged about being raised bey single mother who put herself through school and managed to earn a doctorate. he said it's critical for families and the american economy that women be paid the same amount as men. he added that women should not be referred as an interest group. comedian jimmy kimmel will

young threatened to release the tape and expose edwards' affair. the man who shot and killed trayvon martin received $200,000 on his website. but george zimmerman's family did not disclose that before he was freed on bond. zimmerman was freed on a $150,000 bond on monday. his lawyer says he didn't know about the money when he asked the judge for bond last week. he says the family took out a second mortgage on their home and only used $had thousand from the website to bail out zimmerman. >> they could have made a maneuver to get to that money and they didn't some of i think they were not holding, hiding and planning something else with this money because they didn't use it. >> the judge says he may revisit the issue after he learns more about the money. zimmerman's website has been taken down, but his defense says it will started two others. a space shuttle enterprise is one step closer to its final home. yesterday the shuttle docked on the back of a 747 left dulles

update on break news out of southern california. a magnitude 4.1 earthquake hit san bernardino county, 10 miles north of fontana, at 8 this morning. it was centered along the san andreas fault. building were sway engine the downtown los angeles area, about 60 miles west of the epicenter. and there are reports of slight damage to homes in the rancho kook mongo area near the epicenter and a 2.0 aftershock. of course we're following this

presidio parkway. caltrans plans to reopen the area at 5:00 monday morning. crews will have a total of 57 hours this weekend to demolish the entire structure, remove the rubble and prepare a new temporary roadway for the monday morning commute. workers are using hydraulic hammers to tear apart the surface of the road. in all, four sections of the drive are being taken down at the same time. >> after they are done with the critical areas, they moved rubble out of the way so we can start building sections of the roadway detour that's below it. >> as you can imagine, the jackhammering is creating a lot of noise. rangers in the golden gate national recreation area will handled out earplugs to tourists and direct them to more quiet places. caltrans says some aggravation this weekend will pay off for in the future. this is animation of what motorists will encounter next week after the demolition is complete. drivers will take the underground viaduct with the

temporary roadway beginning monday morning. despite the doyle drive closure, there are several ways to and from san francisco and are men county. the first option, take the bay bridge to the san rafael bridge and north bay. our ktvu news crew did just that and took 33 minutes yesterday to cross the two spans and travel the 22 1/2 mile distance. you can also get the golden gate bridge through geary boulevard or california street. you also have highway 101. >> if people act as they normally do, decide it's a great weekend to ride your bike or take the ferry, then we'll be okay. but as it is, 19th avenue on a normal weekend is packed. >> for locals there are ways around the main detours. routes like 25th and lincoln are open. but those roads aren't designed to handle the a lot the traffic so you could get into some gridlock there. people are advised to 11 you're car at home and take the ferry. the golden gate transit

district is doubling its services from both sauls legalityo and larkspur, launching at 8:00 this morning. you can expect park presidio to be very busy today. they have changed things up. right now you can see the traffic moving along there. they have made this a four-way stop so left turns are now allowed from park presidio on to geary boulevard of they do usually don't allow to you did that. but that could cause problems as that intersection gets really busy and every time you have a four-way stop, it does cause problems. people were out there earlier directing traffic. we expect them to do that but don't expect to spied through there. show you the golden gate bridge now. it hasn't been that bad. they're been saying from the beginning to just avoid the area if possible. it looks like people are trying

apartment building. the surviving victims were taken to the hospital with moderate to serious injuries. the shotter remains at large. detectives spent the night talk to witnesses. it's unclear if the victims were college students. southern california police are looking for the person who shot a 16-year-old boy in front of his santa ana high school. police say she was walking with his friends when he was shot in the chest yesterday afternoon. his friend who was not harmed tried to get the victim home but police did find them first. witnesses describe that shooter as a stocky man, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. a planned cat. has been sent to the white house after a case of mad-cow disease was found in the central valley. it's taken investigators several days to figure out where the cow in quo was born, where it had traveled, and whether it had calves. the usda hopes livestock system will solve that problem. there is no public health

threat they say. a plan to change the state legislature to part-time won't make and the ballot this year. organizers just did not get enough signatures on time. but they plan to keep pushing ahead for next year. their measure would limit legislative sessions to 90 days a year and cut lawmakers' salaries from around 8,000 dollars a month to just 1500. that would mean each lawmaker would make about $18,000 a year. >> nadia lockyer'ses boyfriend is not going to face assault charges. she resigned from the alameda county board of supervisors after an extramarital affair and i had substance abuse problem. she claims her ex-boyfriend steven beat her last february. prosecutors referred the case to the state justice department, citing a conflict of interest. and in a brief statement, the state attorney general's office just announced it took a look at the evidence and decided it's not going to file charges. the attorney says her client is

gritful and believe it exonerates him. lockyer has not commented. a patient at a napa psychiatric hospital is in jail this morning accused of attempted murder. the hospital has a history of patients attacking other patients and staff members. 42-year-old anthony greg is charged with assaulting four people. the hospital released a brief statement saying a patient was allegedly threatened and later three staff were allegedly injured. >> that's [bleep], man. he attacked me, beat me up. he could have killed me. he hit me in the face, trying to bluemound me with a pen, gouge my eye with a pen. >> a psychiatric technician who was allegedly assaulted tells ktvu she suffered a black eye and could not stop crying. depending on the charges, the suspect could end up back at the hospital. this weekend bay area taxi drivers are on alert, oakland police put out a warning to 75 cab companies after they say three cab drivers were robbed

this week. each case is connected to oakland, including the most recent. that started in antioch, where a trio of man commandeered this cab and put the driver in the trunk. they then drove northern than 30 mines to the oakland hills and let the driver about unharm. but not before stealing his car, phone if jewelry. >> obviously, this is a -- violent crime. we're looking into the possibility that it is the same suspects. >> the cab was found yesterday in east oakland. but the suspect have not been located. san jose fire department is fully staffed for the first time in years. 19 new recruits received their badges last night. san jose now has 651 firefighters. it's considered one of the thinnest fire departments for city its size. nearly two years ago budget cuts eliminated 49 firefighter jobs. the positions were restored with a 15 million-dollar federal grant. of the 49 laid off, 22 came back.

on this saturday morning. right now caltrans crews are tearing down doyle drive about an hour ago a large chunk of the golden gate approach broke off. cal trons is building a temporary roadway at the same time. the area is scheduled to reopen at 5:00 monday morning. a woman is recovering after being pulled from her burning apartment by firefighters. the fire started around 10:30 louisiana nice in hayward when the woman fell asleep after cooking. her two small dogs were also rescued from that building. later this morning the family of sierra lamar will announce an increase in the reward for the missing teenager's safe return. right now it's at $10,000. the 15-year-old has been missing for six weeks. one year ago, it was sworn in as san francisco's new police chief. and this morning he is still chief and he is live in our newsroom good morning, chief suhr. >> good morning, mike. >> let's talk about starving. you said that possibly 400 officers gone by 2015. do you thinkite time to start fighting for a bigger budget

try to get more academies in the city? >> oh, absolutely. we're working with mayor lee right now to put together a five-year staffing plan to get touch that charter mandate in 1971. and the reason it's so critical is we've had great success this year because we had enough officers to do. that the community partnering and engaging as violent crimes still down, incidents of homicide down, and shootings down. >> it has been a pretty busy first year for you, including that family of five killed in the ingleside. were you at that murder scene. your take on the crime and really how your inspectors handled the case? >> i mean, i don't know that we've ever had a bigger tragedy. i can't remember and we've been trying to think of a time when when lost five people in one residence. but the officers did a great job. whether it was the officers all the detectives that worked on the case, csi, to be able to have that suspect in custody for the commission of that

horrific crime in pretty much 36 to 48 hours, i don't know anybody that could do it any better than that. >> it has been one year since you were sworn in. what do you want to do personally or can do individually as a leader at the department? what do you want to get better at that you scratch your head and did maybe i can do this more? >> when you introduced me you said i was still chief. i'm still pinching myself that i'm still chief too. i just think that the support i've gotten from both inside and outside the department, you just love to build upon that and make sure everybody knows that we in the police department and for sure me personally i'm just so appreciative of the opportunity to serve san francisco. >> so there's nothing specific? you're confident about your leadership skills -- anything you're lacking? >> i don't have a great head of hair. but -- no, we're really trying. we would like to have more technology. we're trying to be as efficient

as possible. we spoke earlier about the officers leaving. that's a lot of seniority, a lot of experience, a lot of native san franciscans that just know how we like to do it in the city. we need to get that into the younger officers coming in and then we have a fabulous it director for the first time on a web base platform, so our regional partners on every side of the bay into the peninsula. there's a great spirit of cooperation right now, and that's going to make the whole region safer. >> i know you talked about natives, you're a native, what are your quick thoughts on the niners leaving? >> i just breaks my heart. i remember christopher tickets in the day in the end zone, and they'll always be our niners. but there's just something and having them in the 49ers square. it makes me very sad. >> chief suhr, thank you very much for coming in live in our newsroom this morning on mornings on 2. >> thank you for having me.

authorities in washington state have surrounded a bunker where they believe a man who allegedly murdered his wife and daughter is hiding. sheriff's deputy say peter keller is inside this underground shelter. they're thrown dear gas into it but they're not going in after him. keller is a survivalist and deputies think he's armed with guns and a gas mask. they also think the bunker plight be booby-trapped. people who know him say they are stunned. >> he just adored her. one of things we'd seen was him actually just spontaneously going over and hugging his daughter. >> i hope he resists because a want him to know what a bullet feels like. i can't stop being angry. they were amazing people. >> the bunker is believed to have much the levels. police say kellye has been building it for eight years. there's a new code of conduct for the secret service in the wake of that prostitution scandal. the new rules prohibit agents

from drinking excessively, visiting questionable establishments or bringing foreigners to their hotel rooms. agents cannot drink alcohol within 10 hours of starting a shift. some are also going to be accompanied by chaperones. 12 agents were implicated in the scandal during the president's trip to columbia. eight are no longer with the agency. al-qaeda is essentially gone. but its affiliates are still a threat. that's what america's counter- terrorist office are saying a year after the raid on osama bin laden cam pound. they say al-qaeda is becoming more decentralized. the left it of a nuclear or chemical attack has gone down but al-qaeda in yemen is stronger than six months ago. and the affiliate in north africa has broadened its base. >> it took an inspirational leader off the battlefield. that was incredibly important. but we have to remember, al- qaeda is -- is bigger than the core. >> meantime, the public is not going to be seen any new images of the bin laden raid or his

fabulous area. sunny, warmer. bring along the sun block, sun shades. a little cool start this morning, but we're already watching temperatures rebound very nicely. we will have a northerly breeze, anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour for the afternoon, which means if you're an allergy sufferer, this may impact you. pollen count, still very high out there. afternoon highs, mid-60s for the coast. low 80s for some of our inland spots. break this down and show you what you can expect for your neighborhood, coming up. and we begin this hour with breaking news out of southern california. there have been three earthquakes along the san andreas fault this morning. the epicenter was just north of fontana in the community of crest line in the san bernardino county. the largest quake of magnitude 4.1 hit at 8:07 this morning. since then there, have been a 2.0 and 1.8 aftershock. there are reports of damage. two homes in rancho, near the epicenter. the main quack caused high-rises in downtown los angeles, about 60 miles west of the epicenter to shake and sway. well, the big story right

here in the bay area is the demolition this weekend of the 75-year-old approach to the golden gate bridge. ktvu's allie rasmus has a terrific vantage point to show us the progress cal trans crews have made. >> reporter: we're on lincoln way in the presidio. behind us is the demolition project headquarters. where we are standing is exactly parallel to now what is left of doyle drive, the demolition well under way. they have been working here since 8:00 last night. now, i got an update from the project spokeswoman about 15 minutes ago and she says so far, nearly half of doyle drive is now gone, demolished. the demolition crews have been making their way from doyle drive west and moving in. there's also a crew on the eastern span of doyle drive and they are tearing down the bridge -- excuse me, the roadway from that area, from the ground. now, these machines, what they do, they puncture holes in the concrete. that's what the three machines that you're looking at. then an excavator-type machine with a claw tears away at the

concrete. occasionally, we've seen big chunks of the roadway come crashing down, like it did during our last live shot at 8:00. the demolition started at 8:00 p.m. last night. it's supposed to be complete by 8:00 tonight. so 24 hours to tear everything down. but the roads will still be closed to traffic until 5:00 a.m. monday. now, many people have come this morning to watch the demolition and take in what it all means. the end of a major san francisco artery that's been here for 76 years. >> just that that isn't going to be there anymore. i mean, the cars, all that time driving down that over all the years, 15 years or so of my living here, the fact that now we'll be down on the ground. it's tremendous from that standpoint. it's going to be hard to take in what it's going to look like in three years. >> reporter: now, in 2015, this will all be replaced by the new presidio parkway, but for now, come monday, this animation shows you what drivers will see monday morning. as they come off the golden gate bridge into san francisco, they will drive on a new bridge, go through one new tunnel, then hit

temporary roads at ground level as they come into san francisco. but the bottom line, there will be no more elevated roadway, no more doyle drive. the last of it is being torn away, as we speak. we'll take you back out here live, again, project spokeswoman says everything is right on schedule. and so far, about half of doyle drive is gone. they will continue working to demolish this by 8:00 tonight, when all of it will be gone. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. and here is a closer look at this weekend's closure. access to the bridge from marina boulevard and lombard street is off access all weekend. highway 1 in the avenues. again, closure is set to last until 5:00 monday morning. well, despite the closure and warnings of traffic jams, there are a number of popular events in marijn and san francisco this weekend. the giants are playing a three-game set at at&t park against the san diego padres. there is a game tonight at 6:00. last night, fans from the north bay told us they are heeding the

[ laughter ] >> my son's never been on the ferry, so this will be the first time. >> whew! >> enjoy it! >> you're not going to be missing being stuck in traffic? >> no, not at all. >> the ferry will be a popular mode of transit this weekend. the golden gate ferry is doubling its service from larkspur to sausalito. you can expect the park presidio to be very busy today. we've got a live picture out there for you. we've been watching this all morning long. and it gets busy out there. the cars are stacked up, waiting to try to get through that intersection. right now, left turns are being allowed from park presidio onto gerry boulevard, but that could cause problems. certainly causing some slowdowns. you can see that intersection, they are pulling people right in the right-hand lane, but that's a four-way stop now, so it's been very busy.

our ktvu photo journalists out there tell us traffic has been increasing throughout the morning. so you are going to need extra time if you want to head through that area. let's take you to the golden gate bridge now. sunny, beautiful day. keep in mind, the traffic you are looking at on the bridge is coming from highway 1. that is the only pathway being allowed to and from the golden gate bridge in and out of the city. so people have been told to stay away from that area. that may account for the lighter traffic you are seeing right there this morning, but it could get busy if people choose to take the golden gate bridge to san francisco. well, stay with ktvu.com, as the doyle drive demolition continues on our website. you can get a closer look at detours at the doyle drive tab. we'll continue to have coverage all morning long. and new this morning, a woman is recovering after being rescued from her burning apartment by firefighters. around 10:30 last night, firefighters say the woman was cooking at her hayward home when she went upstairs to lie down. when she woke up, the apartment

was on fire. firefighters say she stood up, took a deep breath and then passed out. they found her when she started coughing during their search for survivors. >> yeah, the guys did a great job getting in and out as quickly as they did. different time of day, having someone not notice the smoke as soon as they did. >> the woman is expected to recover and once at the hospital, she was alert and talking. her two small dogs were also rescued from the fire. they were not injured. and this is video from the alameda county fire department of a house fire that displaced six people last night in unincorporated san leandro. firefighters say the flames and smoke were visible for miles. it started in one home and took about 45 minutes to get under control. the homes on either side of the one that caught fire were also damaged by the flames. no one was injured in the fire. but the family's two cats and dogs are still unaccounted for.

berkeley police have arrested a man in connection with a hit and run caught on tape. he is 43-year-old michael patrick mcdahlia. police say he reported his car stolen after the crash, but the car was found yesterday morning in oakland and then police tracked him down to jack lemon square. he was arrested on felony hit and run and drug charges. police say he was driving the black car that hit two bicyclists on tunnel road on wednesday. that crash, as you can see there, was recorded by a camera mounted on one of the bikes that was hit. that video was posted on youtube. the two bicyclists were not seriously hurt. the body of one of the victims of the deadly fairlawn islands yachting crash has been found. 25-year-old jordan froms body was found friday, one of five sailors killed two weeks ago when their yacht was overtaken by waves. three sailors remain missing at sea. three other crewmembers were rescued and survived. a group of people occupying a 10-acre plot of land in albany

the building there, we've got a ferry boat heading across the bay. a weekend warmup in store. . new this morning, president obama is trying to prevent military veterans and service members from getting defrauded. >> one of the worst examples was a college recruiter who visited a marine barracks and enrolled marines with brain injuries, so severe that some of them couldn't recall what courses the recruiter had signed them up for. >> the president and the first lady met with soldiers in fort stewart, georgia yesterday. in his weekly address, he discussed gi bill abuses and he signed an executive order against unscrupulous college recruiters, pressuring vets into high interest loans and misleading them about credit transfers and job placement programs. president obama is also defending the rights of women. he spoke at a women's leadership conference yesterday in washington. he talked about being raised by a single mother, who put herself through school and managed to earn a doctorate. he said it's critical for families in the american economy that women be paid the same amount as men. he added that women should not be referred to as an interest

group. well, comedian jimmy kimmel is gearing up to host tonight's white house correspondent's dinner, bringing together a mix of celebrities, journalists and politician comes to dine with the president. kimmel, a late night talk show host, says he's honored to provide the entertainment and compares his hosting duty to that of a court jester. >> you have a very unusual mix of people sitting in a room with the president and with, you know, all the top people in media, and then you hire some bafoon to come in and entertain. in a way, you feel like you've been commanded by the king to be the court jester or something. >> kimmel says he's not used to making political jokes, but he is planning on using the recent secret service prostitution scandal as material. people such as kim kardashian, stevie wonder and george clooney are also on that guest list. in the race for the white house, the republican candidates are courting the youth vote. mitt romney spoke to a group of

students at otterbein university in ohio yesterday. romney focused on the economy, saying his proposal to lower the marginal tax rate will help small businesses create jobs. >> if your priority is to punish people, president obama's the right guy to vote for. if your priority is to get more good jobs, i'm the right guy to vote for. [ applause ] >> romney did not speak about the student loan issue, but earlier in the week, he did support extending the lower interest rates if congress does not act, the rate doubles on july 1st. gop candidate ron paul held a rally at the university of houston. although other republicans have dropped out of the race, he told students there, he is not through. close to 4000 people heard his hour-long talk. he touted his small government and conservative values. and while the presidential race has captured the headlines, democrats and republicans are also battling for control of congress. one important contest is in the massachusetts senate race. what's noteworthy this weekend

is that both republican incumbent scott brown and democrat challenger elizabeth warren have just released their tax records. warren and her husband, a harvard law professor, earned $1.5 million in the past two years combined. senator brown and his wife, who is a reporter, earned almost as much. >> we are very blessed to have opportunities. we've been together for 25 years and have been saving and working hard, and i want those opportunities for everybody. >> i am the daughter of a maintenance man, who has lived the american dream. and a lesson i take from that is that great opportunities were afforded to me. i'm in this race right now because i worry that those opportunities are being taken away. >> a poll earlier this month shows warren with a 1-point lead over brown. the defense and prosecution are arguing over whether to allow evidence of a sex tape in the trial of john edwards. yesterday, the judge said she would not allow any questions about a sex tape until she's ruled whether the tape is going to be admissible in court.

the decision came while defense attorneys cross examined andrew young, a former aide of edwards. young allegedly threatened to release the tape and expose edwards' affair. the man who shot and killed trayvon martin received $200,000 on his website, but george zimmerman's family did not disclose it before he was freed on bond. zimmerman was freed on a $150,000 bond monday. his lawyer says he did not know about the money when he asked the judge for bond last week. he says the family took out a second mortgage on their home and used only $5000 from the website to bail out zimmerman. >> they could easily have made a maneuver to try and get to that money and they didn't. so i think that is a response to the state that they were not holding, hiding, and planning something else with this money, because they didn't use it. >> the judge says he may revisit the issue after he learns more about the money. zimmerman's website has been taken down, but the defense says it is starting to others. the younger brother of 49ers tight end vernon davis now faces

assault charges in washington, dc. police are investigating his possible connection to three similar attacks, including one that resulted in a man's death. 19-year-old michael davis was arrested thursday night, accused of hitting a woman in the head with a hammer. there are three other similar attacks under investigation in the dc area. police say davis lives within a 10-block radius of those attacks. the space shuttle enterprise is one step closer to its final landing site. yesterday, that shuttle docked on the back of a 747, left dulles airport for new york city. on hand to welcome it was actor leonard nemoy, or mr. spock to all those star trek fans. it was named enterprise after a write-in campaign by fans. >> to the scientists, the engineers who make these wonderful things happen, i say to all of them at the enterprise, live long and prosper! >> live long and prosper. in a few weeks, enterprise will

float down the hudson river on a barge and eventually it is going to be on display at the intrepid sea, air and space museum. giants first baseman aubrey huff is thanking fans for their support and asking for privacy as he struggles with anxiety. huff is on the 15-day disabled list with an anxiety disorder. he issued a statement saying he must focus completely on getting well. part of his statement reads, quote, i know i'm in a public job and i've been one of the more open guys. but sometimes, you have to pull back and work on things in private. this is one of those times. former stanford quarterback andrew luck says he's anxious to join the indianapolis colts, after reportedly greg to a four-year, $22 million contract. >> you get so comfortable in your locker room in college, with all the guys. you see each other every day for, you know, four years. but, you know, it's part of playing the game. >> the college all-american was the number one pick in the nfl

. welcome back to mornings on 2. continuing coverage, the doyle drive demolition in san francisco. >> allie rasmus joins us with more and what we can expect throughout the day and weekend. >> reporter: we've been here since 5:30 this morning, watching this demolition happen. and it is still under way. crews have been here since 8:00 last night, taking apart doyle drive, piece by piece. and according to the project spokeswoman here, she says half of doyle drive is now completely

gone. now, this is doyle drive parallel to lincoln way in the presidio. this is kind of the west end of doyle drive. there's also a demolition crew on the east end of doyle drive that are tearing it down from the ground level there. but the way they are doing this work, these machines puncture holes. there's three drill hammers that come through and they puncture holes in the concrete. that undermines the concrete. then they bring in larger machines that you see with the giant claws at the end and they kind of tear away at the concrete there. and about 5 minutes ago, we saw this big piece of the deck just kind of come crashing down there. and there it goes. all the way down there. now, the demolition started at 8:00 last night. it will be complete by 8:00 tonight. but this roadway will still be closed to traffic until 5:00 a.m. monday, because what's going to replace this is some temporary roads that they have to put there and lay down the asphalt and stripe it. that's what drivers will see when this area reopens monday morning. but, again, the excavation work continues, and according to the
