students go back to school today after a horrible highway tragedy. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2". i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, april 30th. topping our news, the weekend demolition work on doyle drive wrapped up several minutes before this morning's 5:00 a.m. deadline. the new approach to the golden gate bridge is now open for business. allie rasmus drove on the new roadway this morning and how did it go? >> reporter: it went very well. it's very open. very smooth. when we were on it, we didn't notice any traffic problems. since we've been here since 4:00 this morning, there have not been any problems to report. now, chip, our photojournalist, is standing on the roof of the truck, to give us an elevated perspective of this roadway. but we also have newschopper2 to give us a live bird's-eye view of this whole roadway. as we've mentioned, there have

been no problems. drivers are taking it slow. we drove the new doyle drive this morning. let's show what you that was like. we hopped on doyle drive on marina boulevard heading north. you can see there's still a slight curve in the road and there are arrows on the pavement warning drivers about that and there's also a new speed limit posted, 35 miles an hour. caltrans wants drivers to take it as ease -- easy as they navigate this highway. there are five lanes of traffic that go across this. but there's a moveable concrete barrier. depending possible the -- we talked to a caltran construction engineer about this 57-hour project. crews worked nonstop and he hopes drivers appreciate the fact that the road is safer and

a new, nicer road to drive. >> it opens up to the view to the bay -- to the presidio. so hopefully, they can take some that in. >> reporter: this is what it looks like heading south heading towards the marina into san francisco. drivers are gonna see a lot of the old doyle drive still on the right-hand side. a lot of debris. these concrete sections are off to the side. they are toppled over. that debris is gonna be there for the next couple of months or so. there's a lot of concrete and steel that has to be taken apart and recycled. it's gonna take a couple of months to do all of that work. so caltrans wants drivers to take it easy. don't get distracted. don't stop and look at all of the debris on the right-hand side. but so far there have not been

any problems. people are abiding by the speed limit 35 miles an hour. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we also want to give you another update. interstate 680 in pleasanton is fully back open. but it was shut down in both directions for a time overnight due to a big rig crash. the crash happened just before 10:00 on the southbound lanes on interstate 680 near sunol boulevard. the semitruck ended up on its side and the highway patrol says this all started when vehicle went in the center divider. >> in the back that he's carry, he has do a couple of drums of hazardous material. he has one can of lithium.

with an even bigger heart. but that ended abruptly. he was trying to leave when hes -- when he was stabbed with a sword. he died two hours later at -- at the hospital. >> he's always smiling. always having fun. he makes a joke out of everything. he was like the star of the football team. everybody knows that. >> he had been raised by relatives since the age of 12 after moving from samoa, he had been through a rough time after the stabbing death. he was expelled for anger issues but then reinstated and was back on track. now, a candlelight vigil and bake sale is planned for 6:00. meanwhile, police are mott naming the -- not naming the suspects in custody. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:06. well, students from another bay area high school go back to

class today after a highway tragedy. a 15-year-old girl, ashley, was killed in a weekend crash as she was riding to the hospital with a stabbing victim. the truck was broadsided by another car. a mother and daughter in that car suffered major injuries. the stabbing victim was treated and then released. new, police in santa cruz county looking for the gunman who opened fire on a house with a mother and two children inside. >> this happened before 11:00 last night in watsonville. police say the bullets hit a bedroom window and a wall. the mother and child, they are said to be okay. if you have any information about the shooting, call watsonville police. 7:07. pg&e wants to know by tomorrow if you want to opt out of its smart meter program.

open there. we've been watching all kinds of things on the peninsula. northbound, 2101 at 380. the smoke -- 101 at 38 o the smoke and flame visibility. the traffic is -- 380. the smoke and flame is visibility. they are on it. they are putting that fire out. if you are driving down there you will see a slowdown. i think 280 is your best bet unless you have to be on 101 for the airport. we did mention newschopper2, it's overhead looking at the new doyle drive. some parts of it left but that's where you used to drive to the golden gate bridge and on the right is the new doyle drive that will get you to the golden gate bridge temporarily while they build the new presidio parkway.

center building the tallest building in new york city. now, that chunk of steel will be the start of the 100th floor of number one world trade center. next year, that new building is scheduled to be as tall as the first world trade center and then it will be the tallest building in the united states. the murder trial is set to begin for the suspect in a nightclub shooting near san francisco's fishermen's wharf two years ago. 22-year-old key andre davis is accused of killings outside of a nightclub in 2010. police found more than 40 bullet casings outside of the nightclub. 7:18. the building in benicia needs to be repaired. look. this big tree fell on it. it's a eucalyptus tree, crashed down at grant and polk street. it fell on a steel warehouse

hope will help fill the stadium and help out oakland schools at the same time. 10% of all of the money from raiders season tickets sold between tomorrow and june 30th will go to the oakland unified school district. that could add up to a lot of cash. raider season tickets start at $260 apiece. the raiders are giving their fans another reason to buy season tickets. the quarterback, matt leinart, is expected to sign with oakland sometime this week. he played for houston last year. he missed most of the season due to an injury. he was originally the number one pick of the arizona cardinals. if signed he would join carson palmer as the second highest winningest heisman player. sal, you are back. you've been busy. >> well, i've been busy this morning for sure. we've been looking at some

topping our news at 8:00, this weekend's round-the-clock work really paid off. the new doyle drove opened this morning. allie rasmus has more. she drove on it. how did it go? >> reporter: it -- well, it went well for us, there was nobody else on the road. you can see traffic is moving a little bit slowly coming in the southbound direction towards marina boulevard. now, one thing we've learned from chp, they have given out some of their first speeding tickets this morning. the first one was at 6:15 this morning. obviously the road was a lot more open than it is now.

that person did get a speeding citation. that's because the speed limit on the new doyle drive is 35 miles an hour. that's a change from what drivers were experiencing before. this was the view from newschopper2 before the area got backed you. construction crews worked nonstop this weekend for 57 hours to tear counsel the -- to tear down the old doyle drive and put this temporary road in. this let's drivers know about the new speed limit of 35 miles an hour. now, this new tunnel is the biggest change drivers are seeing this morning.

it has five lanes of traffic. a caltrans engineer says he hopes drivers appreciate this new road. he says it's safer to drive and more pleasant. >> on a -- on a seismically nature and -- it opens up the views to the presidio. hopefully they can take some of that in. again you are looking at a live picture of the new doyle drive as traffic heads southbound coming from the golden gate bridge toll plaza into san francisco into the marina. it's backed up this morning. one thing drivers are gonna notice is that as you come southbound towards san francisco, you're going to see a lot of the debris from the old doyle drive, the huge concrete slabs, 30-foot sections of the old viaduct. they are still on the side of the road here. that will be there. all of that debris will be there for the next couple of months or so because it will

take caltrans quite a while to break all of that down, separate the metal. they do want drivers to keep their eyes -- keep their eyes on the road. they are reminding people, the new speed limit in this section is 35 miles per hour. and the has been patrolling this area and they've been giving ut -- and they've been giving out speed limits. 8:03. interstate 680 in pleasanton is fully open again at this hour after being shut down in both directions overnight because of a big rig crash. it happened just before 10:00 last night on the southbound lanes of interstate 680 near sunol boulevard in pleasanton. the big rig, look at t it ended up on its side. the chp says the truck crashed into the center divider, sending concrete flying into the northbound lanes. luckily, no one was seriously hurt. you can go to our channel 2 website, ktvu.com for live

more budget cuts at city college of san francisco. alex savidge tell -- he's on the campus right now. he tells us that students are fighting to keep the cafeteria open. what's going on, alex? >> reporter: right now, inside the cafeteria itself, the dean who oversees the cafeteria in the culinary arts program, he's meeting with the students to talk about the budget cuts that could potentially close the doors at the cafeteria. and a short time ago, i had a time to -- chance to speak with the dean. >> we're looking at where we can cut expenses. so we're trying -- we're actually creating a number of plans to present to the administration in the next week or two and on the advisory board side, they are actually

calling on members of the industry, members of the alumni group that graduated from the program to kick in and to help the program. >> reporter: that's the effort underway to save the student- run cafeteria here at city college of san francisco. something that students believe is an integral part of the program providing worldwide experience for those who want to work in the industry. but they are in danger of cutting its doors because they have to slash $240,000 from the budgeted a one proposal, the cafeteria. the culinary art students serve about 2,000 people a day here. the customers will have to go elsewhere and students will lose the working kitchen atmosphere that makes this such a valuable -- that makes these graduates so valuable to employers. >> rime le -- i'm really saddened by it. our program is very important to this community. >> they have such experience with large amounts of product.
