golden gate bridge. joins us live to let us know how drivers are handling the roadways. allie rasmus is joining us. >> reporter: took construction crews 57 hours to complete the work. putting this new temporary road in its place. new road has been up and running for 7 hours and haven't been any major problems. >> early this morning the chp led a caravan across the project they worked on all weekend long. the driver opened at 4:45 this morning. >> had to do with a lot of good planning. really were able to hit a home run with this. >> reporter: a brand new road and new way for drivers to get to the golden gate bridge. has a tunnel and five lanes of traffic. cal trans will move this median. >> that will manage traffic between 2 and 3 lanes. 3 lanes

always in the peak direction. >> 35 miles per hour and 25 at the southbound curve. that may have led to some of the congestion. >> heavy traffic the morning commute. everybody is still trying to figure it out. >> chp had extra patrols. issued first speeding ticket at 6:15 this morning. >> i take this everyday and it was amazing. i really surprised with how smooth it was >> one thing many drivers noticed were the 30 foot sections toppled over right now to the new road. but this morning, the distraction didn't cause any accidents. >> the piles of rubble is like quick quick. everyone is driving like it's normal. >> reporter: the new road is just temporary. three years from now it will be part of the parkway. another tunnel will be built where you see all the rubble right now and that tunnel will have dirt and landscaping over it and people will be able

to walk all the way down to where we're standing. live in san francisco, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. >> new details on the lower speed limit on the new road compared to the previous drive. there are fairly sharp curves on the temporary surface road as you approach richardson avenue. the old speed limit was 0 miles per hour. it's now 35 on most of the road except for one new curve where it's 25. the new road is safer because of median barriers. opposing traffic was only accept operated by moveable cones. and something else is the bi pass. much of this is temporary until the new parkway is finished in 2015. rallies could potentially impact traffic tomorrow

especially near the golden gate bridge. many union workers are working without a contract. and they are planning may day rallies near the bridge during the morning commute tomorrow. some demonstrators also plan to join the workers. however, organizers say a bridge shut down is not likely. the rallies could also have an impact on bus service. we are continuing to follow how drivers are reacting to the new doyle driver online at ktvu.com. there's a tab on the front page and remember you can get constant traffic from all over the bay area on ktvu.com and mobile. there was a traffic issue in another part of the bay area that actually shut down a busy freeway in both directions this morning. and into the morning commute. we'll bring you details about that in about 6 minutes. bay area high school many

students are trying to come to terms with the death of a classmate. the football star was stabbed while leaving a party over the weekend. just a month away from graduation. >> reporter: we're at the high school where seniors arrived about an hour ago. they didn't have to come in later today because the rest of the school was under going state testing. understandably it was heavy hearts. >> reporter: all night vigil pour popular line -- for popular linebacker. >> always having fun. makes a joke out of everything. >> then more students came to grieve for the 18-year-old who was fatally stabbed. too grief stricken to talk. >> it was shocking. you saw the face and the smile and the hope and the future and two days later his life was taken. extremely tragic.

>> superintendent met with him last thursday to talk about up coming graduation. he had been exspelled before after he went through a rough patch after his friend was fatally stabbed. >> he worked really hard to move past that and do something with his life. and recently he was really improving significantly and he was excited about graduating and going to grad night. >> reporter: he had been raised by relatives since the age of 12 after moving from samoa. a candle light vigil and bake sale is planned for him tonight at 6:00. and police still not naming the suspect in custody for his killing along with three juveniles who will face charges. there is a police presence here on campus as well as counselors here for grief counseling. ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. during the next hour, the san francisco giants will hold a memorial for one of

the five victims of the yacht racing tragedy. 26-year-old bush was the first bat girl in all of major league baseball. her father is a former giants executive vice president. today's memorial is at 1:00 at at&t park. >> the man charged with killing 7 people on april 2nd is due back in court in two hours. 43-year-old juan may enter a plea. he's being held in dublin. the sheriff's office reports he started eating again this weekend after almost a month of self starvation in jail. the university reopened one week ago but the school's future is uncertain. they have been trying to attain accreditation but that's at least a year away. and his financial problems are so severe the school's president

all lanes are now open again following a big rig crash that shut down both directions for hours early this morning. the truck jack knifed into a concrete center divider last night. one vehicle was hit by the debris but no serious injuries. a hazardous materials team was called to the scene because the truck's load contained chemicals. but not released in the cache. some lanes were reopened overnight. however, all lanes were not opened until around 6:30 this morning. a fremont street is now closed in preparation for the

bart extension project. cado road will be closed for 9 months. so construction crews can make changes and build bridges over that road. a push is underway to keep the doors open at the student run cafeteria at city college in san francisco. the campus eatery is dealing with budget cuts. the cafeteria is a critical part of the curriculum for culinary arts students. >> reporter: the campus cafeteria is more than just a quick bite. it's a training ground for culinary arts students who cook everything from scratch. donna says the restaurant like atmosphere makes all the difference. >> really important to us to get the experience and not five or six dishes because in reality when you get out into the

industry, it's not realistic. you are going to be cooking for hundreds and hundreds of guests a day. >> but now this student run cafeteria could be on the chopping block. facing a shortfall because of state budget cuts. >> we want to answer your questions. >> school administrators held a forum hoping to ease their concerns. at the same time a group of restaurant owners kicked off of funding drive hoping to keep the doors open. john doe nated $60,000. >> part of what makes these graduates so attractive to potential employers, they know how to cook large quantities. instead of a couple, they bake dozens and serve them to customers. >> we lose that vital tool that helps student's skill level. >> and unless donations can

in five suffered serious complications that landed them in the hospital. a third of american children and teens are over weight and are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. >> it was nearly five months ago a team of surgeons successfully separated conjoined twins. at this hour doctors are giving an update on their recovery. they were separated last november in a 10 hour surgery. they have undergone physical and okay rational therapy and lead surgeon says they have made a very smooth recovery so far. ktvu rita williams has followed this story and have a report for you at 5:00. a 59-year-old woman from maine is expected to make a full recovery after spending 4 days in the wilderness without food. she thought would be a day hike in the national forest.

no longer the fastest. republicans have voted against his initiatives to fund construction projects and create jobs. a new poll offers a mixed picture. three out of four voters believe quan is doing a quote poor or fair job. negatives appear to be driven by the handling of the occupy protests and crime concerns. despite the lack of strong support 57% of those surveyed say they oppose any recall toefrt remove her from office. pg&e wants to know by tomorrow if you want to opt out of smart meter program. it's not a firm deadline. customers can actually opt out any time. pg&e is asking people to let it know so the utility knows how many analog meters it needs to buy. 20,000 have opted out in northern california. opting outdoes cost more.

people who want analog meters have to pay $75 up front plus a $10 monthly fee. an lambergina that was stolen has been found. the $200,000 car was stolen from the dealership. investigators say it was found over the weekend in a storage unit in point richmond. they say it belonged to a 17-year-old boy who was arrested saturday on suspicion of a shooting at someone in a car earlier this month. >> good afternoon to you. our warm weather pattern will be fading into the first week of may. at this hour, very similar to what we saw yesterday when it comes to our temperatures. the fog along the coastline and even low clouds beginning to spill in. the marine layer shallow

and having a hard time getting over the coast. we will begin to see this move inland as we progress through the week. mostly clear skies. we have high thin clouds moving overhead associated with a weak system. but again, just sending a few clouds. breeze at this point fairly weak. looks like the northwesterly breeze continues to win out. that's why we are actually watching the clouds off the coastline with clear skies all the way down into santa cruz beginning to see it burn off. 65 degrees in oakland. upper 70s livermore. the inland east bay few degrees warmer than yesterday. 69 in napa. still waiting on the influence of that on shore breeze. strengthen throughout the afternoon. but if it holds off just a few hours we could warm into the low 80s for our

inland spots. the satellite here the 24 hour loop showing you more of a zonal flow taking shape. the ridge of high pressure beginning to be squeezed down here breaking down as we move through the week and that's what will contribute to the cool down. here's the trend we are expecting. low 80s is what we felt on sunday. upper 70s is what we're looking at for today and down into the low 70s bottoming out in the upper 60s by thursday. here are the afternoon highs expected for today. 79 santa rosa. 66. into the east bay upper 60s. oakland, 75 expected for danville. 79 in livermore. already warming into the upper 70s for some inland spots. 75 san jose today. widespread upper 60s low 70s. 72 expected right around redwood city and
