[can'ting [-- [chanting] >> that strike by golden gate ferry workers leaves thousands of commuters high and dry. that's not the only protest impacting the bay area. may day strikes and protest, are the top story. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. numerous strikes and protests are happening all over the bay area. we have team coverage.

tara moriarty is covering the golden gate ferry strike and its impact on commuters. but we begin with allie rasmus and the occupy protesters. >> reporter: well, terry we're in frank ogawa plaza. traffic is back open. they were blocking it. about 11, they made their way to -- about 11:30, they made their way to frank ogawa plaza. they are playing music. they are dancing. there is a lot of information about today's occupy oakland may day protest. this all got started around 9:00 this morring. there were three different downtown ing intersections and then the group all converged and they were on the move for most of the morning. news chop newschopper -- newschopper2 was following.

the demonstrators were peaceful for the most part. the crowd did go to several different banks and wells fargo locations. police were closed behind them. the only time thing got tense is at one point, a few posters started banging on the windows -- protesters started banging on the windows. the windows did not break. police stepped in. another minor incident at 19th and telegraph. officials at an oakland school shouted at the protesters telling them to keep on moving, not to stay there because they said they were distracting the students. we talked to several students and they said they -- and they told us they had not tab dash and they told us why they wanted to be out here. >> our economic future has been

gutted. we have no future. people need new solutions. >> the city has prepared for multiple groups to come in today to conduct marches, protests, have assemblies. >> reporter: we did see some downtown businesses lock their doors briefly as the large group of protesters made their way down broadway past them. according to some of the fliers and information, there are events planned for todayle there are groups planning to go back to some of the bank of america and wells fargo locations and other corporate headquarters located in downtown oakland. but there is another event at 3 -- at 3:00 this -- at 3:00 this afternoon. stay with us for more. ktvu.com will have information

throughout the day as well. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. we want to go to newschopper2 -- it looks like -- there it is. these are from newschopper2, newschopper live, where there are some protesters right now talking -- walking down broadway in oakland and this looks like they've blocked the street so there's no traffic being allowed to move along that part of downtown. they do have other events planned. we don't see a lot of police presence at this point. if any other ins incidents come

up, we'll bring it to you. meanwhile, a protest against child protective services in oakland. >> we're out here protesting cps today because of the absolute you will ridiculous day in which cps -- absolutely ridiculous way in which cps targets. >> protesters gathered the 4 -- gathered at 4th and broadway and they claim children ended up being abused in group homes. may day returns to the roots in the mission district where an immigrant march is underway. several hundred people marched up mission street. they say may day has always been the day to focus on immigration in the u.s. and they called for more rights for

undocumented workers. the mission district is still recovering from a ram rampage of randall -- from a rampage of vandalism. we'll have a report on that coming up in nine minutes. the golden gate ferviry is still not -- ferry is still not running due to a strike. tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: well, the workers are out here and they say the next time they will be out here will be may sog and the next time they -- may sog and the next time they said they won't just be targeting -- may 10th and the next time they said they won't be targeting just the

ferry. we work for a company that spends a lot of money on management. when it comes to our healthcare, we're not going to give up. >> reporter: so the district decided to preempttivity shut down ferry service in order to avoid a walkout by workers. our next meet something may 7th and -- you know, we're in a wait-and-see mode. we're stilling -- sticking with what we have on the table. >> we had to change schedules a little bit. we'll get around it. >> reporter: the ferries will not be back service until 2:15 this afternoon but workers say it's not over. >> if we don't get a contract within the next couple of days,

alert and ready to respond to the bay bridge. early this morning, rally -- in the end there were no related incidents on the span. organizers say there are planned may day protests in about 125 cities across the country today. occupy protesters took to the streets of new york city today on wall street where the movement began. the demonstrators march and chanted outside of a bank of america building. and hundred marched in havana ta. may day is a -- havana. may day is a celebration in

mean communist countries. thousands of nurses in a labor dispute with sutter hospitals are also walking picket lines today. [ cheers ] >> one-day strike affects about 4500 nurses at eight sutter hospitals. they are upset about a paid- time off and that could lead to cuts for sick time. >> sick time is a big deal. as a patient, i wouldn't want my nurse coming in sick and coughing and sneezing all over me if i was a patient. >> the nurses will be looked out until sunday morning because sutter health brought in temporary replacement workers and the contract is for

five days. investigators are looking for what sparked the san jose house fire that killed a mother of two. it started just before 3:00 this morning in a four-plex on tully wood. three people including two children made it out. they were taken to the hospital. two of them had critical conditions. they had a crew out at the scene and one neighbor -- we had a crew out there at the scene and they told us what they saw. >> we saw the smoke. we got out. called 911. before you know it, the fire engines had arrive and the flames were will bowing out of the garage -- were billowing out of the garage. firefighters were able to put the flames out in just over one hour. five people were in

critical condition after a fire at a residential hotel in watsonville. up to 25 other people were also injured. firefighters say three people jumped out of the second-story windows to escape the flames after the fire started just before 6:00 last night. investigators say the building is 85 years old and did not have fire sprinklers. the cause of the fire is under investigation. vandals smash windows at a police situation and damage other businesses. how police were able to get this group under control. and rosemary will be here to tell us if the cooling trend will continue and if there's any rain coming later this week. and the bay area power outage that impacted tens of thousands of people this morning. ahead -- the situation now.

a search is underway in san francisco for a suspect in a stabbing. newschopper2 was live over the scene for us just after 7:00 a.m. police say they found the stabbing victim on the sidewalk at 8th street between howard and fulsom just before 6:00. the victim, a man in his 40s was taken to the hospital, with life-threatening injuries. the block was shut down for a time while officers searched

for the suspect. the suspect is still on the loose. we have breaking news under inten -- intense security. we've just learned that president obama slipped into afghanistan today. he's there to sign an agreement aimed at cementing a lasting commitment after the long, unpopular war comes to and. air force one touched down at bagram airport. cleanup is underway in san francisco's mission district after a large group of vandals when on the a rampage damaging dozens of businesses and cars. they even targeted a police station. alex savidge tells us what it took to get the crowd under

control. j. a crew from the city came out to assess the damage. windows were smashed and paint was hurled on the building. as many as 150 people, everyone dressed in all black police say some in the crowd were carrying crowbars and sledge hammers. they describe them as anarchists. those who live in the mission are frustrated by the damage done to store restaurants. officers stood in riot gear. police say the group of vandals broke away from nearby delores park. >> this event unfolded very

arrested. we don't know exactly what happened. but we did see 20 officers around someone they arrested. then everyone in the crowd came over from frank ogawa to the middle of 14th and broadway and we did see this policed with -- window get pashed -- police window get smashed out. i did see the person arrested and they did have what looked like a spray paint can and black clothing they were wearing. now you can see there's a 25 police officers with oakland police -- [no audio] >> it looks like we've lost our signal with alley. he's in the middle of -- allie. she's in the middle of an occupy protest. it looks like there was an arrest there and confrontations. we will continue to monitor that and ick you more details

in -- bring you more details if we get them. five men accused of plotting to bro up a bridge near cleveland have been arrested. >> they ultimately negotiated with fbi undercover objects and purchased two iuds. >> agents stress there was never any danger to the public. the power is back on this noontime in the east bay. thousands were without electricity. the outage began of a 9:00 a.m. pg&e says about 35,000 customers were without power most were in walnut creek.

the power was out in la fayette, pleasant hill and alamo. it was restored in about an hour. >> no way, lord! this can't be us. this can't be us. they got it back on quickly. >> pg&e is checking an east bay substation to find out what caused the outage. good afternoon to you. the cooler weather pattern has clinched the bay area. anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees cooler around the bay. closer to 12 degrees cooler for the inland areas. mostly sunny skies outside our doors. we have low -- we had low clouds move into the bay area. a little breezy at sfo, 22 miles an hour. we do have a light to moderate breeze around the area.

anywhere from 10 to 20 miles an hour. 59 degrees in oakland right now. 57 san francisco. 50s in san francisco, 66 at this time, low 60s in napa, 67 santa rosa, so a mild day in many areas. but again, a lot cooler than what we've seen lately. some of us managed to warm in the low 80s yesterday. and today we'll notice the difference by the afternoon. we will rebound in time for the weekend. but expect every day to be cooler out, especially for the weekend. we wake up mostly sunny but the

we want to take you back live to some of the protests going on. eric rasmussen is live by phone. what can you felt us about the situation where you are? >> reporter: i'm at 14th and broadway where the intersection has been closed. i heard one officer over the loudspeaker say they are cleaning the plaza. i've not seen that. and then my photographer and i were here to cover the protest to begin at noon and then you saw a huge number of people rush toward the middle of broadway. i think there was a woman on a

bike that police had taken down. member of the crowd -- members of the crowd and protestify -- protesters started to move in. there was one side of a police van where the window was broken out. it was a -- it was either a flash gren flade or -- something else, but it went off at our feet. we got a dose of it. we're calming town now. police are forcing everyone to the sidewalk. or they are trying to do that. we saw a number of people put in plastic hand ties,. >> eric, do you have a sense of

there were several arrests being made. that was some of the raw video we just showed you. this happened at 14th and broadway. this all started with a rally and it was mostly peaceful for the most part most of the morning. these may days -- may days. it started off at frank oga wa plaza. and then the crowd of 300, 400 people moved out to the street. one of the protesters started to get arrested. weigh don't know the -- we don't know the circumstances why that person was arrested. we don't know if police
