5:01 pm
you can call this the calm before the storm because if we take you to news chopper 2 you can see the very large crowd that's marching through oakland they are on their way here to frank ogawa plaza. when that clash broke out earlier today in this area police said they were actually responding to people in the crowd who began throwing things at them. >> get away from me, don't push me. >> reporter: we were just steps away when oak land police took down this man and even used a taser to subdue him. he was among four arrested during this clash with police that suddenly erupted in the middle of broadway around 12:30. we had to pull back when officers released tear gas into the crowd. opd insists it's tactics have changed since earlier confrontations with occupy oakland in the last year. >> we have a couple of individuals who are inside the crowd and who's embedded themselves in the crowd. they've been some what

disrupted but we've identified those individuals and our plan is to remove them. >> reporter: oakland police said they had all hands on deck to handle protesters but won't discuss exact numbers. >> you must leave now. >> reporter: officers from several other agencies joined opd when they faced off with protesters again on 14th this afternoon. the alameda sheriff's office provided this giant armoured truck as police surrounded frank ogawa traffic. but this time the crowd cleared out and there did not appear to be any more arrests. >> reporter: and oakland police say the more visual presence we've seen out here mostly today has been in response to what the chief called a more assertive and aggressive tempo from the protesters. we're live here in oakland, eric rasmussen. and once again right now we want to take you up live to news chopper 2 showing that massive march that is headed toward right where eric rasmussen is standing. which is ogawa plaza. right now these protesters are
5:03 pm
at around 18th and foothill so they still have a little bit ways to go. they have to go down merit and several blocks to downtown oakland. presumably they will be there in time for what we now expect to be a massive rally at about 6:00 tonight. we've got a team of reporters, we have both ken down there and eric rasmussen. it's interesting. i was down there earlier today and very few buildings actually boarded up their windows which perhaps could be a good sign here that they're not anticipating anything going on this evening. the foot locker did have their windows boarded up. the foot locker has been raided before. but things have been normal downtown, people not thinking things will get out of hand. we will continue to follow these protesters as their make their way to downtown oakland.
5:04 pm
we will keep you updated of their progress and once they make it to their home base at frank ogawa traffic. ktvu's christien kafton live now in the city why they are targeting a building in particular. >> reporter: at san francisco occupy has reoccupied, retaken this building at 888 turk, but there's been some developments. you can see the heavy police presence in just the last two minutes. police officers started moving here in mass with that truck starting to set up barricades in front of this occupied building. some of the protesters pushed back, there was some pushing and shoving and raised voices. you can see that again that heavy police presence there on the corner. up on the roof of this building you might be able to see some of the banners that the occupiers have hung from this building. this building was vacant.
5:05 pm
it is owned by the archdiocese of san francisco. i talked to police and they confirmed they're in communication with the church about how to proceed. we have some video of the occupiers initially moving into this building. we talked to some of those occupiers and they tell me they intend to use this building as a community center and a place to provide shelter and food. if this building looks particular. it is the same building occupiers took on april 1st. police kicked out the occupiers the following day and arrested 45 people. occupiers tell me they are ready for that to happen again. they say there are bigger crime than trespassing. >> it's criminal that they are empty, vacant buildings like this when people are on the street because of lack of affordable housing. >> reporter: now the occupation of this building here in the western edition followed a day of protest. occupy blocked an intersection at market and van nuys before they marched through the streets of san francisco to wind up here. now coming back to our live
5:06 pm
picture you can see that police have now set up a scrimmage line of sorts. the occupiers on the right side of the street, the north side of the street by 888 turk. officers again working now as we speak to set up that barricade and try to create a line. we expect that at some point in time they're going to issue an order for people to disperse. we will continue to monitor this situation out here. at this time we do not have word on when the san francisco police will try to push the occupiers out. i asked that very question they said they don't want to say because they don't want to tip their hand. we will continue to monitor the situation out here. we have two news crews actually in the crowd right now and we'll bring you the very latest as they occur here in san francisco. for now, we're live here in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu news. we are just now bringing you for the first time thanks to our camera on the ground here in oakland right where those protesters are marching in that long stream in the area

the neighborhood of 6:00. a huge rally judging by this crowd. at 14th and broadway at frank ogawa plaza. i'm going to bring in sal castaneda. sal this is causing a lot of traffic in the immediate area but not on the freeways. >> not on the freeways. i think people were worried in protests past they marched on to 880. you remember when they were on broadway and 14th in a very busy commute area. but this is near 18th and foothill. certainly some of the local traffic is not getting through. police seem to think that the protest is just gathering team here. more people are showing up. then as one big group they will march over to ogawa plaza. you can see different groups have gathered here. everyone some buses frank and gasia are going to meet up here first. then all the protesters are planning to march all the way up to ogawa plaza.

developing news in san francisco at the site of that occupied building in the western division. let's go to our christien kafton, is it true somebody is throwing bricks from the roof of that building. >> reporter: right. if i look like i'm distracted it's because i'm trying to make sure we don't get hurt out here. you can see a very heavy lain of police officers they just came out on mass. they have what appear to be bean bags to try to deter that person on the roof. i watched as that individual
5:33 pm
circled around back of the building. he climbed on top of the building, carried three or four bricks with him. started throwing them at the police officer and taunting them. i did see one man akr-sz the street immediately -- across the street immediately after those bricks were thrown, had blood on his face. he either got hit by the bricks or hurt himself trying to avoid it. we saw a young man arrested right over here a few minutes ago. those officers just moved -- as the officers moved to arrest him a big crowd moved in as well. you see a very tense almost stand off feel here. this has been a relatively peaceful protest a while back. maybe five minutes ago. this all really developed just in the last five to seven minutes where the tension really started to ratchet up here. this building owned 888 turk, owned by the archdiocese of san francisco. i've confirmed with san francisco police that they have in fact, been in contact with
5:34 pm
the archdiocese. presumably the order to remove these people for trespassing has either already been issued or will be issued soon. but the tension here really ratcheting up with the man on the roof. certainly we're going to make sure we're safe as well as keeping an eye on the scene here in san francisco. for now we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, channel 2 news. now back to the east bay that's where a crowd of thousands is making its way to oakland's frank ogawa plaza for a planned may day protest there. let's go to ken pritchett with the situation there in downtown oakland. >> reporter: over the past hour we've seen the crowd slowly start to build here at frank ogawa plaza. we're expecting a much larger crowd as that march makes its way to downtown oakland. everything started here at frank ogawa plaza at noon but before that rally started here at noon there was a significant

confrontation between protesters and police. a woman on a bicycle was the first arrested as it appears to have bumped into an officer on the police line with her arrest that set off the crowd. the clash between police on 14th, between 14th and 15th on broadway. several arrests were made and objects and paint were thrown at police. the confrontation lasted about half an hour, occupy oakland members declared victory and they returned to the park. >> i don't know it seems like a stand off. they're not wanting to budge, it's kind of a mess more than anything. >> reporter: after about two hours in the plaza police returned in force at about 2:00 and ordered protesters to clear the street. their police line swept broadway clear and traffic resumed as it is now. but most of the protesters by that time by the time the police lines had arrived most of the protesters had moved on
5:36 pm
to that march. that is the march that's making its way through downtown oakland. we're expecting it to arrive here within the next hour. downtown oakland, ken pritchett. ktvu. back live to san francisco, where christien kafton is changing after someone threw a brick from the roof there. >> reporter: you can see they have now moved significantly closer to 888 turk. this is the reoccupied building in san francisco. i saw just a couple of minutes ago some of the occupiers bringing in one of the police barricades. possibly fortifying their position inside that building. as you can see now the row of officers very close to this building. chief photographer john mackenzie is here with me. if you can pan to the left you can see there's an officer there with what appears to be a
5:37 pm
shotgun, possibly a bean bag shell round keeping an eye on the roof of that building that is where that brick was from. if you look at the ground on the officers feet you can see a lot of degree on ground from where the brick was thrown. a lot of the officers disavow the incidents of that individual. they said, he's not a part of the occupy movement. officers not taking any chances. you can see the officer here in a tense moment with that bean bag gun aimed up toward the roof of the building. again, unknown exactly how many people are occupying this building as we've watched, i watched it dozens of people went in and out of the building so it's hard to gauge exactly how many are in there right now. certainly that's one of the issues that could make it difficult for a san francisco police if they win and if they decide to move into this building. you can see some of the occupiers outside of the building on the ground here. as we move around the officers.
5:38 pm
you can see some of the protesters are sitting right in front of the officers. these are the individuals that quickly disvowed the actions of the man on the roof. we will continue to monitor the situation here in san francisco as it develops. no idea as this point where that individual who threw that brick off the roof is at this time. certainly that is a concern for everyone present. we will continue to monitor again the situation out here and bring you the very latest developments as they occur. for now we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. christien kafton, i think we just saw one of the protesters up on top of the roof there. maybe we can go back to the camera for a moment. while we have you. how many people, any idea how
5:39 pm
many people are inside that building? >> reporter: well again, that's one of the things that is difficult to gauge. i saw dozens of people coming and going earlier. it's hard to tell how many stays at the building and how many went out. you might see some action on top of the roof of the building. there are also a lot of banners hanging out there. this gentleman who's here he just came outside of the building. he was one of the people who was up on the roof. he's not the individual who's throwing the bricks. >> christian, let me interrupt you for a second. because what we're looking at here if i'm not mistaken, is a different building. this is a white building. i'm not sure of the location or how close to you they are. but we're seeing someone on the roof that's throwing something. it's paul and lutheran day school. is that close to where you are? >> i don't know if that's close to where we are. there's certainly a will the of rooftops here, and we're
5:40 pm
keeping a close eye. where we are is 888 turk. that is again the same building that the occupiers took on april 1st. >> okay once again what we are looking at here are live pictures of a day school st. paul's day school in san francisco. i i don't have the exact location. i apologize for that. but we saw someone up on the roof throwing something. don't know what that was that the person was throwing. we do have reports at another building at another location where a person was throwing rocks, throwing bricks. this person may be throwing the same thing. you can see the police, looks like they have their weapons drawn now. yeah, this is going on right now as we speak. just threw something. >> police are firing bean bags at him. >> that's the photographer telling us the police are
5:41 pm
firing bean bags to the person there on top of the roof. we're still trying to get an exact location and figure out how close that is to the other building that christien is at. we're still trying to figure out what the man is throwing. it seemed like a rock. police took cover behind that police vehicle and aim, i'm not sure exactly what that is but it could be a bean bag gun for lack of a better word at the person on top of the building. we can tell from the picture we're showing you here, there are people moving to this area. this is similar to what christien kafton was reporting from that building at turk and goth. but he was saying someone was throwing bricks from the top of that building and we saw evidence of that from the degree on the street. but here we have someone else on top of another building throwing what we believe to be
