now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's may 2nd. police in riot gear arrested demonstrators who took over a church building on turk street during a may day protest. ktvu's claudine wong spoke to police moments ago. claudine? >> reporter: well, tori, let me give you a look at the situation right now on turk street. things are quieting down. san francisco police still positioned right in front of this building on turk and goth. they've been here all morning and all morning long and went in just before 5:00 a.m. to clear out that building from protesters. they made several arrests this morning, more than two dozen people taken from inside that building. we watched as people filed out one by one and were put into san francisco police vans after

spending the night inside. we talked to one protester who was actually let go. he said everyone was pretty much asleep when police went in. they assumed they would be kicked out today but they didn't think it would happen until later this morning. we just talk to a san francisco police sergeant about the operation. >> the operation was very successful, in that 26 people were taken into custody without any incident. there were no report of any injuries or any reports of use of force. >> reporter: the sergeant said the decision was made to go in just before 5:00 a.m. because they wanted to do it before things got going throughout the day. they said that was a decision made for public safety. they went in with riot gear given the violence they saw. again, you are taking a live look at the san francisco police officers still stationed out in front of this building as they continue to wrap up inside.

26 people arrested, will be charged with trespassing. two people were let go. one person was a man we spoke to who was in a wheelchair and they said that the officers just decided that he would be released. the other was a radio reporter who was actually just sitting in the lobby at the time of this operation and so when they went in, even though she was credentialed and had her press badge showing, show was taken into custody for a short time and just detained and has since been released. again, the san francisco occupy protesters have been evicted from this billing. they are out. the building is clear. it's secure and turk street is open. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. our news crew captured this tense scene at 14th and broadway late last night t was just one of many violent clashes between police and

police say they've fired at the gunman who fired at an oakley police officer. the man found dead inside a car that was partially subamericad in water. the water -- sub merged in water -- submerged in water. a laurel area of bethel island was -- large area of bethel island was locked down. >> last night i heard sirens going on which i never hear. then i don't hear helicopters flying around -- then i heard helicopters flying around. then i heard on the news somebody shot themselves. >> reporter: throughout the morning, police stopped the neighbors leaving this area, even searching a few cars. as we come back out here live, you can see people still not being able to come back in this neighborhood even though we've just received confirmation a short time ago that the gunman,

they've been searching for all morning long has been found dead in what appears to be a suicide. we're live here on bethel island. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05. reports of a man out watching his dog in menlo park having a terrifying brush with death. someone fired shots at it. it happened at newbridge and holly burn. witnesses tell police it was a light-colored car that drove up to the man. the people in the car called out his name and then fired several shots. the man ran and was not hit. menlo park police are conducting an investigation. if you have any information, call them. it's 7:06. just hours after president obama's surprise visit to afghanistan a suicide attack killed seven people in kabul. a suicide car bomber and taliban pillly tant -- militant

dressed in burka. the taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in response to president obama's visit. in addition to those killed another 17 were injured. most wounded were afghan children on their way to school. coming up at 7:15, the message that president obama visited during his visit to afghanistan, aimed to those at home. well, construction crews take another step in completing the bay bridge suspension. these are exclusive pictures you are looking at, folks. ktvu was the only news crew to be up on the catwalk. eventually, the steel wires will be turned into one very strong cable. it's about 23 inches thick. this cost more than $6 billion. this new span is on schedule to

open 2013, labor day weekend. now, our reporter, tom vacar, will have much more on this exclusive report, that will be tonight, right here on ktvu. >> yeah, tom vacar does a great job doing the behind-the- scenes. let's take a look at traffic with sal. a new crash? >> that's right. this is on interstate 680, tori and dave. we just heard about it. 680 southbound at andrade road. a motorcycle crash in the left lane and it is there reported in the left lane. now, newschopper2, just coming back and we saw it -- we saw it on the chp. you can see the traffic is at a standstill. still not reached the scene yet but traffic is very, very slow heading down there. this is reported as a motorcycle down in the fast lane. i heard the fire dispatch come across the police radios in just a little while ago. apparently it's there in the left lanes. we'll let you know about it as

soon as newschopper2 gets there. but if you drive out of pleasanton to san jose, look at all of this slow traffic heading south. it really is a mess heading to the sunol grade. some people are trying to bail out, get off the freeway. might not be a bad idea. some people are trying to get on the freeway, wondering what the heck is going on here? again, it is a reported motorcycle crash and newschopper2 will be here in just a moment. in fact, if it is there before our report is over, we'll try to go back to it here. westbound bay bridge, the traffic here is gonna be backed up for a 15-minute delay. no problems on the bridge heading into the city. northbound 101 in san jose, we have traffic that's gonna be a little bit busy now approaching 880. northbound 280, there is a crash near wolfe road. that's already slowing traffic out of downtown san jose. and -- yeah, all right. 7:09. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. a very good morning. it's chilly, cold. however you want to slice it is

good morning. we have a motorcycle crash on interstate 680, the sunol grade right here in front of the sunol golf course. our newschopper2 is overhead looking at it here. it looks like the motorcycle is damaged although they did pick it up a while ago. but the damage to the commute is severe. as a matter of fact, we're gonna get our newschopper2 to pull out for a little bit and show us the backup. you can see the left carpool lane is blocked and also the

left leg is slow. 680 is backed up for miles coming out of pleasanton heading to the south bay. if this is your commute, you need to give yourself extra time because it is going to be very, very slow because of this motorcycle crash, again, block the two left lanes. another update for the traffic coming up in just a few moments. all right. thank you, sal. it's 7:16. we're following developing news out of china this morning. the blind chinese activist who sought refuge in the u.s. embassy in beijing is now the free -- is now a freeman. he left the embassy after receiving assurances from the chinese authorities that he would not be placed under house arrest again. but a close friend of his said he only agreed to this if his

wife would be beat to death if he left. this is hillary clinton. the activist told clinton he wanted to support her for supporting his cause. in just about 30 minutes from right now, president obama is due to arrive back in washington, d.c. after making a surprise trip to afghanistan. ktvu's alison burns in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us how the taliban struck right back after the president left that war zone. alison? >> reporter: dave, the taliban says it's launching its spring offensive. this is the aftermath of the latest violence in kabul. just a few hours after president obama left the city, taliban insurgents disguised in burkas detonated a car bomb. at least seven people were killed. it's a clear sign of the challenges that remain in afghanistan for the u.s. president obama talked about the challenges during his surprise trip last night and said he realized americans are

tired of war. he signed an agreement with hamid karzai to cooperate counterterrorism efforts after the u.s. hands over security of the country in 201. he also met -- 2014. he also met and said we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. but some say he's been too short on specifics about how many trips will re-- troops will remain and what their role will be in 2013. >> i don't want the troops just sitting there and being targets. >> reporter: president obama is expected to arrive back at the white house within the hour. he has a full schedule today including two campaign events. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. we're also learning that the media also blew president obama's top-ecret trip to afghanistan. the white house had arraigned for the president to arrive, as you see him here, in afghanistan under the cover of darkness. in fact, the administration

received a fake presidential schedule for the day. but then, somehow a 24-hour news channel in afghanistan posted a tweet saying that president obama had just arrived in kabul. that report was picked up by other media. the white house says that initial tweet went out before the president arrived which could have endangered his security. it is 7:18. at least a dozen people were arrested when police in oregon clashed with may day protesters. police say the protests started around 11:30 yesterday morning and ended in the downtown area. they say it was peaceful until protesters tried to block sidewalks and streets. when officers tried to move them back, they say several protesters resisted and were taken into custody. in manhattan, it was back to where it all began for occupy wall street protesters. hundreds of people marched outside of the bank of america offices chanting about foreclosures. occupy activities say the goal was to bring businesses to a

halt but instead most called it a day when it began raining. police say 30 people were arrested for disorderly conduct. members of the california peak association association -- faculty association, and the union represents 23,000 on 23 csu campuses. the results are due to be announced at cal state long beach. now, other csu campuses will be listening in on a conference call. well, today, cal state university students plan to give of you their food to -- -- dash to give up their food -- to give up their food. this hunger strike involves at least 12 students on 12 different campuses. now, preparing for this, the students gift gave up meat and

of the freeway is now in a foster home. remember the story about freeway? he was spotted by a mother and her son. he was being dragged from a rope from a pickup truck last week. that rope broke, it snapped. the dog was rescued but he lost one of its legs. freeway is now in the care of a woman in benicia undergoing rehabilitation. the humane society expects to put him up for adoption in about four to six weeks. we want to check in with sal on the very serious problem on the sunol grade. >> that's right. the motorcycle crash, tori and dave, was blocking the left lanes, the fast lane and the carpool lane, 680 southbound, they cleared the crash. i want to show you southbound 680 because of the crash in that left lane, it is very slow coming out of pleasanton and heading down to fremont all the way down for about a mile or two of stop and go traffic.

boulevard. the hydrant, you can see it pinned underneath the car. the drivers was taken to the hospital. san mateo county sheriffs are investigating. 7:33. it looks like oakland mayor jean quan will keep her job. the "tribune" reports the recall effort against her appears to be struggling. the group perceived to having the best shot to out of her -- to out of out of her needs money and signatures. the -- to oust her needs money and signatures. a poll shows just a third of respondents would recall her but the critics say the may day violence could cause more people to oppose her. san jose's mayor chuck reed was not able to push a pension reform measure bu the city council. reed wanted the council to trim benefits for all new city workers hired after july 1st.

athens greeted a massive -- completed a massive writedown with private creditors. this means bondholders took a cut of about 70% of their investment. this was designed to bring greece's debt down to 120%. and the s&p also has a warning for california. it says the state could return to budget gimmicks this summer if the legislature fails to pass a balanced budget. it cites two examples for the concern. the first is the state deficit has grown because income tax revenue fell below expectations. the second is that a judge ruled lawmakers' pay with not be -- cannot be withheld if they don't reach a budget agreement. they say this could keep the state in a budget stalemate. an ongoing project, the bay

citizen reports that two men testifies that the government chose to forgo competitive bidding in order to speed up the process. that allowed the alaska company hired to do would the work to make expensive modifications. the two executives were fired in 2009 and are now suing for severence pay. federal investigators have not found evidence backing you the allegations made by an anonymous source to a seattle tv station. that source claimed that agents hired strippers and prostitutes in el salvador last year. while the interviews continued that investigation we're told so far has turned up nothing. the allegations surfaced after 12 agents were implicated in a prostitution scandal last month in colombia. three of the agents refused to cooperate and would not take

occupied. the city of oakland is facing a strict deadline to finish the investigation of last year's violent occupy protest. the order was issued yesterday by a federal judge. it comes one day after a report criticizing the police d's actions was released. the judge said -- police department's actions were released. the judge says police officers guilty of any police misconduct cannot go unpunished. one minute after 8:00. happening now -- some people in bethel island are still not being allowed back into their homes even though a manhunt has come to an end. police say the suspect was found dead in a car in the area of piper and sugar barge roads. alex savidge has been following

information. this was at newark, new jersey. they were packed with shrapnel. the suitcase owner told screeners she's attending an explosives demonstrations. well, officials allowed her to book a flight without taking those land mines. well, five men in ohio were arrested by the fbi after a sting operation. it covered their alleged plot to blow up a bridge in cleveland. the fbi says the men bought what they thought were explosive devices. agents say on monday night, they put those devices at the base of this bridge and tried to set them off from a remote location. that's when they were arrested. the fbi says the men are anarchists and they are angry with corporate america and the federal government. 8:16. a uc san diego san diego student says he was forced to drink his own urine after being forgotten in a holding cell for five days. he was -- he was one of nine

there is a new development in the secret service sex scandal. federal investigators have not found evidence supporting the allegations made by an anonymous sort to a seattle television station. the source claimed agents hired strippers and prostitutes in el salvador last year. while interviews continued, the investigation so far has turned up nothing. but the allegations surfaced
