gear raided the building at about 5:00 this morning, arresting 26 squatters. >> they started to come in the building, we heard they were arrested. we all got together in the building and decided we would surrender peacefully. >> it was a great experience, until the -- until the archdiocese gave the order for the s.w.a.t. team to come and evict us. >> reporter: the archdiocese says they hope to rent out the building to raise scholarship money. the spokesperson said that the occupy protesters caused about 30,000 in damage. >> i don't think it is as bad as last time. >> reporter: two buildings were taken over this time. we saw graffiti and garbage scattered on the grounds. the archdiocese is reviewing the security and says it doesn't wish to work much with the occupy movement. >> if you break into somebody's property and vandalize it, and trash it, are you going to negotiate with them? i don't think so. >> reporter: and coming up at 6:00. what police say caused them to move in early this morning to

move the protest. for now, reporting live, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 action news. and this hour, san francisco police released details on the arrest at the building. they say 26 protesters were arrested for trespassing. 15 live outside of san francisco. six were arrested last month while occupying that same building. one man was arrested after he allegedly threw bricks and metal pipes from the top of the neighboring buildings, down on to police officers and passers by. this was a situation you saw unfold live right here on ktvu news at 5:00 yesterday, that man, jesse nesbitt, is facing multiple charges on assault and vandalism. jennifer lane was inside doing interviews when officers rushed in. she showed them her press pass, but they cuffed her anyway, she said she earlier asked officers if it was okay to go inside,

they said yes, she was detained briefly and then released. and crowd control a top priority during the demonstrations yesterday. and eric rasmussen tells us about the new tactics he saw the police officers use during the day of protest, eric? >> reporter: frank, one of of the strategies came out of her play book. police actually had four special backpacks, a lot like the one our photographer here, randy wears all the time. with a small camera, it sent a live feedback to the chief in the operation center so he could see how officers were handling things out on the streets. the confrontation such as this one might have remindedded protesters with ugly clashes from oakland police last year. but during this day of protest, nearly 200 opd police officers were also using many other tactics for the first time. using a loud speaker from this atv, police say they tried to increase communication with the crowd, even warning this man.

before he was arrested for refusing to get out of the street. late last night, motorcycle officers also blasted the crowd with noise from their sirens to clear the road. but early on, police say the goal was to make targeted arrests of those breaking the law without stopping peaceful demonstrators. >> when the group came out, we didn't immediately say it is unlawful, get out of the area, we actually said please move back into the plaza. >> reporter: yet, some of those arrested, including one man who says he was riding his bike home from a birthday party still believes they were unfairly singled out. >> the sergeant turned around, said arrest him, four or five cops were on my back kneeling. >> reporter: today, we heard from officials who say they aother -- and others were able to use the cameras to see what happened. they were happy about the

outcome, but police say they were happy about the outcome, public works crews here in the plaza found unused paint balloons they believe were ones used to throw at them yesterday. and explosive devices found in a backpack at last night, demonstration in oakland were more of a problem than first thought. >> move out of here. >> this was the scene at 17th street and telegraph avenue as they ordered our cameras to back away. later they told officers they were just smoke bombs. well today, the alameda bomb squad tested the 11 devices and said they burn very hot. >> these were home made, brought on purpose, there was only one reason to cause this, the damage and destruction. >> the sergeant says these are the types of things that are

found at the oakland demonstration. the police released a name of protesters who were arrested in the akronationings, the first clash started at about noon, by the end of the day, 39 people were arrested for what police say were isolated incidents of vandalism. 22 were from the bay area, including two from oakland, three were from other parts of california. police cited and released 16 people, but 12 others are jailed. and our coverage continues on ktvu.com. you can watch raw video of the clashes between police and protesters. and you can find out more about the causes that brought people out into the streets in the first place. and a new round of digging under way at a remote farm house in san joaquin county as they resume the search for victims of the so-called speed freak killers. they spotted the crews outside

linden. ktvu ken pritchett has more on the results of today's dig. >> reporter: well, gasia mikaelian, i can tell you we were being kept well back from the dig site, which is about a half mile to a mile north on this country road. i can tell you that the search for human remains found nothing. but some believe some who were outside the investigation believe this site may hold the remains of a missing woman. investigators with the fbi and the san joaquin sheriff's department began to dig yesterday, you can see three holes in the ground, the search began after the information on wes shermantine who told the bounty hunter that his partner in crime, lauren herzog, once rented the property in the back. they had a pit in the back, they called it the pit. he says it was covered up in '97, bull dozed over. he said that wes shermantine told him the body of the missing woman out of reno could

be buried on this property. wes shermantine has already provided information that led to the remains of four missing women, two found after the work on the abandoned well, and two more in calaveras county. after failing to find remains at this new site, the fbi says the lack of credible information is reducing the hope that more victims would be found. >> wes shermantine wouldn't talk to them anymore, so anything they come up with on the investigative information, they're developing themselves. >> reporter: the sheriff's department is saying very little about this excavation, other than that they found nothing and their work here is done. the sheriff's department says they will come in and look again once the road is worked on. ken pritchett, ktvu news. and a fremont man arraigned on the charges of murder involving a high school football star.

police arrested 18-year-old abraham hade after the death of the man, three teens are also in custody. fudi died saturday night after being stabbed at a party in fremont. he was set to graduate from newark memorial high school where he was a star runningback and linebacker on the football team. and a man searched for who carjacked a woman at the plaza station. police say a man armed with a handgun forced a woman in the parking lot to give him her keys. he then jumped into her car and then drove away. it is the second time this year that it happened. last year there were four. police say the gunman is a light skinned african-american man in his 20s, described as 5 feet five, the car is a four door sedan. and approving a controversial law to combat public drunkenness and violence near city bars, the ordinance would hold all bars and restaurants to the same

standards, and gives the city more control over so-called problem bars, the ones that over-serve customers over violence and other crimes taking place. the law is expected to take effect in about 6 weeks after the council takes a vote. and employees union today saying that 95% of the members voted to authorize a series of strikes. the california faculty association represents professors, library workers, coaches and counselors. the union has proposed rolling strikes in which workers, groups at campuses would go on strikes for two days, followed by another group. a university spokesperson says talk of a strike is premature and that bargaining sessions are set for tomorrow. and at hospitals, they're locked out of work until sunday. about 4500 nurses walked off the job at sutter's bay area hospitals, including berkeley's medical center. they're upset over management proposals to cut sick pay and

health care benefits. sutter hired replacement nurses for five days, and until then, the permanent nurses won't be allowed back on the job. meanwhile, the state's health services department reports that it has sent inspectors to all of the 12 hospitals involved in the strike, and told us just a half hour ago it found no discrepancies with services at the sites. and the city of san jose is locked in a tension battle. coming up at 5:30, the tough choice city leaders are having a hard time making when it comes to retirement benefits for city workers. as expected, former house speaker newt gingrich announced he would bow out of the republican primary race. he made it clear he is not stepping out of the spotlight. >> today i am suspending the campaign, but suspending the campaign does not mean suspending citizenship. calista and i are committed to being active citizens. >> his wife, children and grandchildren were near him, he

noted it was one year ago on may 11th that he entered the year. he said it was a very wild ride. he said the high point was winning the primary election in his home state of georgia, newt gingrich did not immediately endorse rival mitt romney but answered the critics saying that mitt romney is not conservative enough. >> you know this is not a choice between mitt romney and ronald reagan. this is a choice between mitt romney and the most radical leftist president in american history. >> newt gingrich said he will work for a wave of change across america, campaigning not just for a republican president but for republican governors and other lawmakers, by suspending his campaign, newt gingrich can continue to raise funds and help pay down his four and a half million campaign debt. and mitt romney didn't mention newt gingrich today while campaigning in virginia, but he did blast president obama's economic policies. >> people ask me well what would you do to get the economy going? i say well look at what the

president has done, and do the opposite. >> mitt romney noted that more than 23 million people in the united states are out of work, or have stopped looking for work. he said "americans are tired of being tired of this economy and of this president." another troubling sign on jobs, now this time from the private payroll company adt. they say the u.s. businesses added 119,000 jobs in april. there were 201,000 jobs in march, they say the count is often lower than government estimates, the jobless rate is expected to remain at 8.2% when the government releases employment numbers on friday. and fewer factory orders in europe on the mind of investors in wall street. the news about the factory orders affected the trading, the dow dropping a little more than 10 points, closing at

. water shot 20 feet high outside a store this morning. san mateo county deputies say a car went out of control, then hit a fire hydrant just before 2:30 this morning, happening at the safeway near taylor boulevard. the deputies have not released a cause for the accident. and officers say a man in the east bay today shot at police, later turned his gun on himself. the incident started at about 1:00 in the morning, when the oakly police say the man sped

away from a traffic stop. officers followed him where they say he shot at them, hitting two police vehicles, one bethel island resident said they found the silence helpful. >> i thought there was shooting, maybe there had been an argument somewhere, people were shooting each other, but from the amount of sirens, i knew we were being protected. >> the contra costa deputies found the car in the canal near the golf course, the investigators say the man was inside dead of an apparent gunshot wound. and caltrans finishing one of the most important and precise jobs on the new eastern span of the bay bridge, live on treasure island, where all the work is being done. >> reporter: yeah, well i'll tell you something, this massive cable is finally starting to take its massive final shape.

right, we start off the weekend with warm temperatures, dropping a few degrees each day. that is because of this weather system that i have been tracking. moving closer, it slides south. rain up around ryera, the dynamics are weak, not a lot of moisture, not a lot of lift, but as it moves in here tomorrow it will bring us a shot of sprinkles mainly in the north bay, chilly overnight tonight as it was last night, upper 30s in the north bay, most of us in the mid-40, tomorrow morning you will notice it is chilly, a chance of sprinkles mainly in the north bay in the morning hours. after lunchtime, the sprinkles, the light sprinkles extend south probably to the north bay. do we need rain, yes, will we get rain? not enough to change the percentage of the average, san francisco coming up on 70% of average, santa rosa, 60% of average, we had a couple of nice storms at the end of march, if it were not for those, we wouldn't have had a

. the transportation security administration says it took three land mine casings from checked baggage, heading to san francisco. they provided this picture that happened at liberty newark airport yesterday, two mines were loaded with shrapnel, the woman who owns the bag said she was headed to a demonstration here in california. and president obama heading to california. after a surprise visit there. just hours after he submitted a new post war relationship with afghanistan, violence once again rocked the country.

>> reporter: less than two hours after president obama left afghanistan, a suicide bomber killed at least 7 afghanistan citizens. the taliban said it carried it out because of president obama's visit and his signing with the agreement with afghanistan. that calls for a long-term u.s. presence in afghanistan after the u.s. troop withdrawal in 2014. >> that we are committed to a long-term presence and long- term engagement, between two equal and sovereign states. we are not going home this time. the new pact also allows for a continuing u.s. military presence to help train afghanistan forces and clear out any pockets of al-qaeda resistance. the insurgents say it is the start of a new offensive, targeting foreign troops and members of president karzai's

government. and new, secret service agents that were accused of hiring prostitutes last month. one spokesperson said that the secret service told him that agents paid nine of the 12 women they took back to their hotel rooms, following a night of heavy drinking. they were there waiting for president obama's arrival. today, the secretary of homeland security denied similar accusations happening in el salvador. and a famous painting bringing in 19.9 million, when it was sold at auction in new york city. the screen, painted in 1995 went on the block at sotheby's, this is one of four versions. the other three are in museums. this one sold by the son of the neighbor who bought it from the artist himself. the money will go to pay for a new museum in norway. and the walnut city creek

. this is ktvu at 5:00. frustrated students say they're already maxed out and are dreading the decision that could effectively price them out of higher education. some students could see the interest rate on their school loans double. ktvu's robert handa has more on where one lawmaker is rejecting a proposed solution to the problem. >> reporter: well here at foothills college and campuses all over the nation, the academic fate of many students is on the line. in 60 days, some may not be able to afford to go to class. >> reporter: ashley rose is a communications business student at foothills college, already accepted to usf, and waiting for word from santa clara university. as with many students, she has a federal stafford student loan and works part time jobs to pay college expenses, 24-dollars a unit. but keeping the amount at 3% will expire july one, and rates

will double to 6%, where the ufc expenses already run about 40,000 a year. >> it is hard to juggle everything and afford it. as a student, you have to figure out how you can do it. and knowing this in the back of your mind that interest rates are doubling, really, really makes students anxious. >> reporter: at foothill college's loan office, others face the same dilemma. >> i have to have three jobs or definitely i'll apply for scholarships, and so i will keep on -- keep on moving on. but it is definitely something that will be very overwhelming. >> reporter: congresswoman was on campus today, campaigning against the increase, pointing out that stafford loans are based on need. so community college students probably have the fewest options. she is upset that the only opportunity offered in congress is to take the health care funds. >> we can do better than that, there are plenty of loopholes

in the tax code, even with closing them for big oil and gas that can pay for this. >> reporter: the out come is looming, the foothills graduation will take place before the july first deadline. and the supervisor has led his 10th annual bus trip for education to the state capitol to speak against cuts to education. students, teachers and others were a part of the group that left san jose this morning to be with the lawmakers and governor's staff. also, high loan interest rates are a concern, you will hear from a worried student coming up at 6:00. and coming up at 6:00. the show of solidarity by a top executive who wants to make sure students get the help they need to go to college. and the san jose city council dead locked on the plan to trim the benefits for all city workers july one. the mayor presented the plan at last night, meeting, exempting

police officers and firefighters, and would have added a less expensive health plan for current and retired city workerses. voters will get a chance to consider similar changes on the ballot in june. the alameda county board of supervisors has come up with a process now to replace lockhere, who resign resigned as a supervisor in the middle of a scandal over drug rehab, an affair, and e-mails that accused her husband of supplying her with illegal drugs. the board will take applications from people who live near the district two in alameda county, and appoint one of them to replace her. the seat will come up to fulfill her term through 2014. and police in southern california investigating the death of former nfl star junior seau as a suicide. >> life saving efforts performed, on on mr. junior seau, however they were not successful.

he is deceased. >> police say his girlfriend called 911 after finding him at his beach front home in oceanside. he had a gunshot wound to the chest. no word if there was a suicide note. but investigators say they found a gun near his body. junior seau's upset money was heartbroken after hearing the news of his death. >> i am shocked, but i appreciate -- everybody -- showing your love. showing your love to my son -- >> love you. >> junior seau played 20 seasons in the nfl with the san diego chargers, miami dolphins and new england patriots. chargers issued a statement saying that everybody there is in complete shock and disbelief right now. we asked everybody to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to junior and his family. junior seau was 43 years old. and also today the attorney for an admitted gang member gets his final say in the

triple homicide case. coming up at 5:45, the one mistake the defense says jurors could make. the leader of ireland's catholic church says he will not step down, in spite of accusations that he helped to cover up child abuse by a pedophile priest back in the '70s. a bbc documentary says that cardinal brady was the one who interviewed smith, and that nothing was done to stop smith who went on to abuse dozens of others, he said he exaggerated the role, and that he didn't have authority to stop smith. and one man saying the chinese government threatening to beat his wife to death if he stayed in beijing. he left today under an agreement in which he would receive medical care and be reunited with his family. the embassy provided these

. the corporate feud between target stores and on-line retailer amazon heating up today, target announced it would soon stop selling kindle's readers, the two parted company last year, there is word that target stores will put in for special displays on the apple ipads, which are of course kindle's competition, amazon had no public community on the matter. and a new grant helping uc berkeley help explore theory.

they are working on the grant for the theory of computing. they help to use computers solving climate problems and other areas, it is set to open in july. and education systems asking for more money, the president of uc and csu as well as the chancellor of the community college system are lobbying the state capitol for a bigger budget for the next school year. they say lawmakers need to make education a top priority. >> sometimes they were more interested in the prison stripes than we are graduation gowns. so i would say we better look at that. >> and the school officials are also calling on voters to approve governor brown's tax hike plan, which would put more funding into education. and the march of dimes ruled that more than one in 10 babies is born prematurely. 15million were born too early last year, including a half million right here in the u.s. the march of dimes says that

. the sheriff's department today released more details today concerning the death of a napa state hospital patient. brandon coates died after being injected with a sedative. the spokesperson said after the injection, coates hit two police officers. investigators say the officers fought with coates for between one and three minutes, later cuffing him. a deputy says coates was on his knees with his upper body against the bed when he stopped breathing. he is described as weighing some 300 pounds. and the fate of a man accused of killing a father and his two sons in san francisco now in the hands of a jury.

ktvu rob roth has more, as the defense argued the wrong man is on trial. >> reporter: in court today, the defense attorney told the jury that edward ramos didn't murder three family members, that the real killer is at large. in the closing arguments, the attorney said my big fear in this trial is that you will base your verdict on emotion, and discount evidence that shows that ramos is in fact, innocent. the district attorney says not so. on his office wall the only picture that he has is that of the victims, anthony bologna, and two of his sons, michael and anthony, he says ramos is the real killer. >> we'll show that he is guilty of murder. he was in the car, we believe he was the shooter. >> reporter: but the defense claims it was an ms 13 gang member who fired the fatal shots in the passenger seat of the car that ramos was driving. and that police did not

local park. the 14-year-old boy was a student in south san jose. the oak grove district school superintendent tells us the boy was harmed at the park in downtown san jose last friday. he suffered head injuries and died either late monday or early yesterday. teachers at the boy's school told his classmates about the death today. and palo alto officials backing away from a proposal to put a tax, a bond measure on the ballot. it would pay for needed public safety facilities. but the city council says now it probably can't meet a july deadline to craft a measure for the ballot. it still needs to do research to determine just what the measure should include. and a nuclear reactor at the power plant back on tonight after being shut down by an invasion of jelly fish like sea creatures, investigators say a southerly wind blew it into the intake screens for the unit two reactor. they are small, barrel shaped

days, winds are kicking up. there are showers back in the forecast. most of us will not notice a heck of a lot. but if you're in the north bay you will notice rain, probably up to a 10th of an inch in some places, maybe even a quarter of an inch, right now, the delta area, clayton, antioch, winds gusting up to 24 miles per hour. the winds will start to come a little southwesterly, as we go into the evening hours into tomorrow morning. that is the indication that there is a weather system close by. temperatures are cool today, from yesterday. and 65 in vallejo, 70 in napa, tomorrow's temperatures cooler, with lots of 60s, mid-60s, upper 60s, tomorrow a chance of sprinkles in most neighborhoods. but the real rain event, or the showers if you will, will be up in the santa rosa area. for the rest, just chance showers, in the bay area, it dries out quickly. rain mainly in the north bay, the rain line, the computer
